Today is the 103rd birthday of the man who produced art under the name Tom of Finland: Touko Valio Laaksonen. His work not only helped isolated gay men after the Second World War realize they had a place, but it also created visibility. His images, some of which are much tamer and less revealing than their heteronormative counterparts, were censored, banned, confiscated, and even burned. There was a time when it was more acceptable to show an actual photograph depicting a heterosexual woman being restrained against her will than a drawing of two men expressing attraction to each other. Sadly, as recent as 2019, the official Tom of Finland Instagram account was disabled for a violation of community guidelines. Maybe if the drawings of men were holding a box of diet tea? If you do not like or understand his art, it is probably because it is not for you, it is a good lesson in understanding differences. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. “I won't let you go, as long as I live.” The original 7-part run of The Garden of Sinners comes to an end with these last two installments, Oblivion Recording and A Study in Murder: Part 2, the former providing a lighter, more comical one-off case where Shiki teams up with Touko's apprentice (and Kokutou's little sister) Azaka, while the decidedly-not-light latter chapter returns us to the mystery of the serial killings that first brought Shiki and Kokutou together. Oblivion Recording is a joy in its own way, and a welcome eye-in-the-storm between the series' two longest, densest installments, but A Study in Murder II is the star here, as we learn the truth about Shiki, cut to the heart of who Kokutou is underneath his still exterior, and find out what these two characters mean to one another, and what choices they will make in the face of death. Enjoy, and come back next week as we review the final pieces of The Garden of Sinners – the Epilogue short film, the eighth film, Future Gospel (aka Recalled Out Summer) and the Extra Chorus OVA. In this week's episode of The Garden of Sinners, we get an uncannily familiar story about waking up in a hospital with damaged memories and magic eyes. Shiki spends a lot of time in bed! Mikiya pouts and does a musical number! Touko broods sexily while accomplishing nothing! Mostly we just talk about Touko though.Next time we'll be covering Kara no Kyoukai: paradox paradigm. “My eyes allow me to see death.” Our journey through The Garden of Sinners continues with the third and fourth installments – Remaining Sense of Pain and The Hollow Shrine – as we learn (most of) the story behind Shiki, their powers, and how they, Kokutou, and Touko all came together. Remaining Sense of Pain sees the trio tackle one of the darkest cases in the series with the abused Fujino Asagami – and a content warning is definitely in order for this one, given the episode's depiction of sexual assault – while The Hollow Shrine gives us a full tour through Shiki's recovery and their mastery of the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. It's a striking, challenging set of films that ultimately leave us with a firmer understanding of this universe and its stakes, as we head into the series' home stretch in the weeks ahead. Enjoy, and come back next week as we review the landmark 5th part of The Garden of Sinners – Paradox Spiral. In today's episode, I'm interviewing a friend of mine, my ex-colleague Touko Tahkokallio, who was the designer on games like Hay Day, and Boom Beach and led the Brawl Stars team at Supercell. And he's now doing his own studio in Helsinki with a group of experienced game developers. In this discussion with Touko, we talk about his learnings from creating both board games and video games and how he sees teams or pairs of excellent individuals working together to create these games.

This episode was great fun! Marcel and Pia invited guitar player and clean vocalist Leevi Luoto and keyboarder Touko Keippilä of ONE MORNING LEFT to the podcast and really found out a lot about the music! First of all, it's not just funny - the topics are serious and the music is made to support other people in bad situations, cheer them up or just being there for understanding. So this episode turned out to be like the music of ONE MORNING LEFT - an emotional rollercoaster with heavy topics, strategies to deal with the current situation, rough patches in life but still we laughed a lot. Find out more about the non-existent connection to Eskimo Callboy, what Touko did in his 10 years absence of the band and the irony behind 'Sinners Are Winners'.

Kat, Leo, and Bcom are ready to finish off most of Fall 2018’s anime with the 12 week of shows! The finale of The Girl in Twilight satisfied some of us and infuriated others, by giving us some of the most visually impressive moments of the show, but depriving us of closure on several major plot points. We have a prolonged discussion about whether Nopperabo has eyelids in the season 2 finale of Golden Kamuy, which finishes with many dramatic reveals and shifting alliances, and importantly, the return of our favorite C.G.I. bear. Run With the Wind is Gone With the Wind so we move onto Kat struggling to recount Kaede’s arc of Bunny Girl Senpai without strangling someone. After some bad Arby’s almost killed Leo, we came back 2 days later to continue the second half of the podcast with Banana Fish. Bcom pretty much lost his shit at the ending of this show, which seemed to throw away any good faith it had ever built up over the course of its run, with a conclusion that felt incredibly mean-spirited and unsatisfying. As Zombie Land Saga wraps up, Kat continues to profess her undying love for her soulmate Yuugiri, but is annoyed with the generic idol ending we got. Karakuri Circus continues to confuse us with insanely rushed storytelling that leaves us bewildered and pining for the good old days when the series was really promising. At this point, just read the manga instead of watching the anime. Bloom Into You closes out its penultimate episode by ratcheting up the drama to 11, and exposing Touko’s deepest flaws in the process.Recorded January 3 & 5, 2019. Bcom, Kat and Leo are back to talk about Fall 2018’s 11th week of anime! After we chat a little bit about Aquaman’s glistening chest, Florida’s horrifying morning sun, and the cute nostalgia of Hi Score Girl, we jump into this penultimate week of anime. The Girl in Twilight kicked off the week with a wonderful reveal of a deeper relationship between two of its characters, which flourished into one of the most emotional fight scenes of the series. Hide your kids, hide your wife, because Tsurumi’s 7th division is coming for our heroes at Abashiri Prison as Golden Kamuy reaches its climax. We move on to cover the last episode of Run With the Wind that will air in 2018, with the show taking a long break before episode 12. Maybe they’re recovering from Haiji’s ridiculous practice regimen. Hype thrusters are engaged because we’ve finally reached the heavily anticipated imouto arc of Bunny Girl. We might be saying A Farewell to Dino in the penultimate episode of Banana Fish, which continues to rack up the body count with more gunfights, and more child abuse. Sakura forgot her zombie memories, and the writers forgot Yuugiri’s backstory in the latest episode of Zombie Land Saga. Then we move on to meet the honey nut Shirogane-O’s in the latest wild, crazy, and completely off-the-rails episode of Karakuri Circus. Finally, in the latest episode of Bloom Into You, Touko gets a rude awakening about the reality of her late older sister’s personality, that shakes her whole philosophy of how she should be living her life.Recorded December 27, 2018. Leo, Bcom and Kat are back this week to discuss week 10 of the Fall 2018 anime season. We kick it off with some nonsense, like Bcom watching a famous Japanese movie from 1983 about husky sled dogs surviving the treacherous landscape of Antarctica. Kat had to survive holiday parties, and a dairy awkward moment with her friend, and Leo had to survive his deepest dental appointment yet. We move on to anime, and Kat channels her inner Gordon Ramsay and lambasts Asuka for trying to make a chikuwa cake in The Girl in Twilight. We debate crushed vs. mashed potatoes in Golden Kamuy and Bcom can’t keep straight whether Anji Toni is blind or deaf. Leo laments Kana’s lost waifu status with her lax cooking skills, and also theorizes about the extraordinarily high number of people fainting in Japanese anime this season. In the latest episode of Rascal Sits While Girls Bathe, we argue about the necessity of the baller idol performance in the episode, and also figure out the perfect ending for the show. Banana Fish continues to use rape as a narrative crutch, while simultaneously getting incredibly cheesy with its drama. We’re all incensed that Yuugiri seems to have been snubbed in getting a backstory arc in Zombie Land Saga, in favor a frankly pretty boring setup episode for Sakura’s arc. Kat’s fury at a new character named Pantaloons in Karakuri Circus leads Bcom to a discovery of the Italian theatrical roots for the puppets’ naming scheme. We wrap up with Bloom Into You where a friend from Yuu’s past shows us how much Yuu’s outlook on life has changed since meeting Touko.Recorded December 20, 2018. Ivan is a founding member of La Connexional, a dance instructor and a current student in an Environmental & Conservation Sciences undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta. Originally from Cameroon, Ivan moved to Edmonton about 6 years ago and started training in West African Traditional Dances in 2014 while he was part of SANGEA. This stirring biopic follows the life of the artist Touko Laaksonen (Pekka Strang), known to the world as Tom of Finland, whose proudly erotic drawings shaped the fantasies of a generation of gay men, influencing art and fashion before crossing over into the wider cultural consciousness. But who was the man behind the leather? After serving in the army in WWII, Touko returned to repressive Finnish society of the 1950s, haunted by traumatic experiences. Moving in with his affectionate but unenlightened sister Kaija (Jessica Grabowsky), he fell in love with her lodger, handsome dancer Veli (Lauri Tiklanen), who Kaija also fancied. Unable to express his feelings openly, Touko poured them into his drawings, creating his vision of the hypermasculine leatherman. Soon his art was famous under his secret pseudonym, but getting it published was a struggle that took Touko to California, where he and his art were finally embraced amid the sexual revolution of the 1970s. Tom’s story is one of love, courage and perseverance, mirroring the gay liberation movement for which his leather-clad studs served as a defiant emblem. Finland’s Official Selection for Best Foreign Language Film consideration at the 90th Academy Awards. Actor Pekka Strang joins us for a conversation on his nuanced and winning portrayal of an iconic artist and unexpected champion of equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
