On this week's episode, I'm joined by Lea from Faraos Cigarer in Copenhagen to discuss the excellent God Bless the Mistaken by Nakatani Nio!Originally published in ASCII Mediawork's Dengeki Daioh magazine in Japan, God Bless the Mistaken is the 2021 follow up to Nakatani Nio's incredibly popular Bloom Into You. Rather than Yuri romance though, God Bless the Mistaken is a sci-fi slice of life story in which Kon Wataya becomes a research assistant of his landlord, Kasane Himesaki, the world's leading expert on Exceptional Phenomena. What are Exceptional Phenomena, while simply put, they're bugs in reality that cause the world to alter in interesting and often inconvenient ways. In their ever changing world, there's only one thing that's certain, and that's the most ordinary moments can sometimes be the most extraordinary of all!Join us to hear our theories on the title, the dangers of working construction in a bug filled world and Lea's top 3 one shot recommendations! Thanks to Juliano Zucareli for our theme music!Find us on:X: Manga Tak PodBluesky: Manga Tak PodInstagram: Manga Tak Pod

The hosts of the Otaku Spirit Animecast sit down to discuss, oddly enough, the most complicated genre to really nail down. The Slice of Life Genre seems to cover everything, but some argue doesn’t cover much. Listen and get the hosts’ take. Topics Covered in this Episode: What is Slice of Life, The Convolution of the Genre, Opinion Against Sub-Genres, Opinions Against Unnatural Elements in Slice of Life, What Slice of Life Means To You, Pros and Cons of Slice of Life, and breaking down several shows on their validity of Slice of Life label. The opening song for this episode is the OP1 for Hanasaku Iroha called “Hana no Iro” by nano.RIPE. The closing for this episode is the ED for Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju called “Kawa, Taredoki” by Kana Shibue.

To celebrate Pride month, Sully sat down with voice actor, script writer, and ADR director David Wald to discuss his work in working to dub and license LGBTQ themed anime, including Love Stage!! and Hitorijime My Hero. David is known for voicing Gajeel Refox in Fairy Tail, Bulat in Akame ga Kill!, Berg Katze in Gatchaman Crowds, and Tetsutetsu in My Hero Academia, and has been the ADR director for Love Stage!!, Hitorijime My Hero, Kokkoku, Bloom Into You, and the upcoming dub of Cutie Honey Universe. In this episode, David discusses pushing to get more queer anime into the West, the place that LGBTQ fans have in the anime community, and introducing anime to a wider audience. Sully and David also talk about how anime can play an important role in the coming out narratives of LGBTQ fans. Note: Due to connection issues, there are some drop outs on David's end from the mid point until the end of the podcast. Austin tried to edit around them the best he could but unfortunately, the sound quality is not the best. Thank you for listening! 2019 marks the centennial anniversary of the Yuri genre, celebrating 100 years of girls in love challenging the expectations placed upon them by patriarchal definitions of love and gender. To commemorate the legacy of the genre and the stories that’ve been told, we interviewed Erica Friedman, a Yuri historian and tastemaker who has been at the center of the fandom for over two decades. Erica is the founder of Yuricon, an organization dedicated to uniting the community through fan events and scholarship, and has written extensively on Yuri on her blog Okazu, which has reached its 4000th post after over 16 years! Erica’s planning an incredible number of events to celebrate 100 Years of Yuri with the community, including numerous convention appearances and a Yuri pilgrimage in Japan in the fall, all leading up to the release of her comprehensive book on Yuri set to come out in 2020! We chat with Erica about the work she’s done growing a proactive community around Yuri, the history of the genre and its fan culture, the influence of digital comics in helping newer creators and more untraditional stories to get published, and how we’ve reached a point where these stories can be spread more widely thanks to the efforts of trailblazers who fought to create a space for those who came after them to work in and expand. Like the pun in Okazu’s namesake, we hope our interview serves as an appetizer before you enjoy the full buffet of information out there about yuri and the works themselves! Our conversation with Erica is the first of an entire month of interviews with manga industry professionals about their work and fandom. Up next will be our interview with Joey Weiser, the award-winning comic book artist and creator of the Mermin series, who joins us to discuss his new book Ghost Hog (available NOW!) and the influence that manga and japanese culture have had on his work. We’ll be releasing the interview this coming Friday, but you can listen to the episode early by becoming a $2 Patron on our Patreon! We’re also offering a ton of other content to our Patrons, including a monthly Patron Bonus Pod, Show Notes, Bloopers, Unreleased Podcasts and more! RECORDED APRIL 9TH, 2019 You're probably asking yourself, "Ladies. I thought we just talked about Love Stage for a Ladies Night? Why are we getting a second Ladies Night episode this week?" Well, let me tell you, dear listener, there's a very good reason! To coincide with the release of our Love Stage episode, the ladies had the wonderful opportunity to delve into the mind of it's director; and one of the few, and very vocal individuals, at the fore front of LGBTQ+ anime being dubbed in the west. While you may know him for his performances in Garo: The Animation, Akame ga Kill, and Diabolik Lovers, among others; he's also stepped into the directing and writing chairs for several projects such as Hitorijime My Hero, Bloom Into You, Tada Never Falls in Love, and, of course, Love Stage! But we at Dub Talk just like calling him our Rainbow Overlord now. Enjoy this extra special episode of Dub Talk, where the ladies sit down with the one and only David Wald! Like what we do? Kat, Leo, and Bcom are ready to finish off most of Fall 2018’s anime with the 12 week of shows! The finale of The Girl in Twilight satisfied some of us and infuriated others, by giving us some of the most visually impressive moments of the show, but depriving us of closure on several major plot points. We have a prolonged discussion about whether Nopperabo has eyelids in the season 2 finale of Golden Kamuy, which finishes with many dramatic reveals and shifting alliances, and importantly, the return of our favorite C.G.I. bear. Run With the Wind is Gone With the Wind so we move onto Kat struggling to recount Kaede’s arc of Bunny Girl Senpai without strangling someone. After some bad Arby’s almost killed Leo, we came back 2 days later to continue the second half of the podcast with Banana Fish. Bcom pretty much lost his shit at the ending of this show, which seemed to throw away any good faith it had ever built up over the course of its run, with a conclusion that felt incredibly mean-spirited and unsatisfying. As Zombie Land Saga wraps up, Kat continues to profess her undying love for her soulmate Yuugiri, but is annoyed with the generic idol ending we got. Karakuri Circus continues to confuse us with insanely rushed storytelling that leaves us bewildered and pining for the good old days when the series was really promising. At this point, just read the manga instead of watching the anime. Bloom Into You closes out its penultimate episode by ratcheting up the drama to 11, and exposing Touko’s deepest flaws in the process.Recorded January 3 & 5, 2019. Leo, Bcom, and Kat close out Fall 2018 with reviews of the remaining few episodes, and final scores for all of the anime we watched this season! We start off by chatting about the finales of Bunny Girl and Bloom Into You, neither of which came to a completely satisfying conclusion. Then, because of our eight show weekly format this season, we had a lot of extra time to watch anime outside of the podcast, and we run through many of those, such as SSSS.Gridman, Irozuku, Black Clover, and Hi Score Girl, just to name a few. Finally, we dole out our final scores and thoughts on our top anime picks of the season. With all that done, we will see you next episode for a 2018 year in review episode!Recorded January 5, 2019. Bcom, Kat and Leo are back to talk about Fall 2018’s 11th week of anime! After we chat a little bit about Aquaman’s glistening chest, Florida’s horrifying morning sun, and the cute nostalgia of Hi Score Girl, we jump into this penultimate week of anime. The Girl in Twilight kicked off the week with a wonderful reveal of a deeper relationship between two of its characters, which flourished into one of the most emotional fight scenes of the series. Hide your kids, hide your wife, because Tsurumi’s 7th division is coming for our heroes at Abashiri Prison as Golden Kamuy reaches its climax. We move on to cover the last episode of Run With the Wind that will air in 2018, with the show taking a long break before episode 12. Maybe they’re recovering from Haiji’s ridiculous practice regimen. Hype thrusters are engaged because we’ve finally reached the heavily anticipated imouto arc of Bunny Girl. We might be saying A Farewell to Dino in the penultimate episode of Banana Fish, which continues to rack up the body count with more gunfights, and more child abuse. Sakura forgot her zombie memories, and the writers forgot Yuugiri’s backstory in the latest episode of Zombie Land Saga. Then we move on to meet the honey nut Shirogane-O’s in the latest wild, crazy, and completely off-the-rails episode of Karakuri Circus. Finally, in the latest episode of Bloom Into You, Touko gets a rude awakening about the reality of her late older sister’s personality, that shakes her whole philosophy of how she should be living her life.Recorded December 27, 2018. The 2018 Anime Year has come to a close and it’s time for the hosts of the Otaku Spirit Animecast to tackle the age old question of which is best. Join them in this 4 part series as they run through each genre, best of topics, seasonal picks, and finally the best of the year! Please note: Deliberation episodes are intended to be nearly unfiltered and lightly edited. These were recorded over hours of deliberations and, while a bit of dead air was removed, it may have points of silence. This isn’t a reflection of our typical podcast episodes that are heavily edited for better listening experience. Deliberations covered in this episode: Sci-fi Mecha, Horror Psychological, Comedy, Harem, Ecchi, and Romance.. The opening for this episode is the OP for Darling in the Franxx called “KISS OF DEATH” by Mika Nakashima x Hyde. The closing for this episode is the ED for How Not To Summon A Demon Lord called “Saiaku na hi demo Anata ga Suki” by Yuu Serizawa.
Get triggered! That’s the lesson we learn from top-rated anime “Bloom Into You,” as we dive into an amazing storytelling tip!
Leo, Bcom and Kat are back this week to discuss week 10 of the Fall 2018 anime season. We kick it off with some nonsense, like Bcom watching a famous Japanese movie from 1983 about husky sled dogs surviving the treacherous landscape of Antarctica. Kat had to survive holiday parties, and a dairy awkward moment with her friend, and Leo had to survive his deepest dental appointment yet. We move on to anime, and Kat channels her inner Gordon Ramsay and lambasts Asuka for trying to make a chikuwa cake in The Girl in Twilight. We debate crushed vs. mashed potatoes in Golden Kamuy and Bcom can’t keep straight whether Anji Toni is blind or deaf. Leo laments Kana’s lost waifu status with her lax cooking skills, and also theorizes about the extraordinarily high number of people fainting in Japanese anime this season. In the latest episode of Rascal Sits While Girls Bathe, we argue about the necessity of the baller idol performance in the episode, and also figure out the perfect ending for the show. Banana Fish continues to use rape as a narrative crutch, while simultaneously getting incredibly cheesy with its drama. We’re all incensed that Yuugiri seems to have been snubbed in getting a backstory arc in Zombie Land Saga, in favor a frankly pretty boring setup episode for Sakura’s arc. Kat’s fury at a new character named Pantaloons in Karakuri Circus leads Bcom to a discovery of the Italian theatrical roots for the puppets’ naming scheme. We wrap up with Bloom Into You where a friend from Yuu’s past shows us how much Yuu’s outlook on life has changed since meeting Touko.Recorded December 20, 2018. Can somebody tell me why the localized title isn't Bloom Into YUU? That would have been perfect! Feelings of love come in the strangest and most unexpected places, none more so than when young Yuu finds herself romantically involved with an upperclassman that makes her question those feelings she's always longed for. That's what we at Dub Talk are eager to find out ourselves, as we dive into the English dub of studio TROYCA's Bloom Into You. Kat, Leo and Bcom are back this week to discuss week 9 of the Fall 2018 anime season. We start off with a nonsense section, in which we talked a lot about various video games we’re playing. Even Kat is playing games now! This week, the girls in twilight saw the truth of Seriouska’s world, and we got a not-so-unexpected reveal of the true identity of The King of Twilight. Kat observes that Golden Kamuy is now pandering to its yaoi fanbase, and the dick jokes have returned in the form of mushroom sight gags. Kat breaks down the latest episode of “As the Wind Turns,” which brought Leo to tears! Also, Kat finds yet another way to compare an anime to Naruto, calling Kakeru this show’s Sasuke. Kat is furious that the typical blonde-ass foreigner has been introduced to the Rascal’s ever-growing harem, but Bcom and Leo just can’t wait for him to have sex with his girlfriend in her sister’s body. Leo also feels a better harem show would focus on Mai’s father’s apparent golden idol touch. Banana Fish has gotten so convoluted that we can’t keep track of all the Harlem Chickens and Killer Bees, and just want it all to make sense. Leo loses his mind over his new Zombie Land waifu, Saki’s delinquent friend Reiko, as he loves a well-tamed shrew. All you need to know about Karakuri Circus is that it’s pronounced GUY, not GUY. Since that’s cleared up, we move onto the episode of Bloom Into You where it gets dangerously close to just being the next Citrus.Recorded December 13, 2018. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are back to cover week 8 of the Fall 2018 anime season! This episode Kat’s voice has been transformed by the power of medical vape and has entered the world of Twilight. Meanwhile, the actual Girls in Twilight get up to some very graceful upskirts and renaming themselves after Apple personal assistants. Meanwhile, Golden Kamuy goes full “bara” in a sea otter-fueled orgy worthy of the craziest shenanigans this show has seen. Prince acquires a treadmill to read manga while he runs in Run With the Wind, while Haiji continues to try to murder everyone with increasingly ridiculous running schedules. Sakuta has to find a way to solve two sides of the same girl’s emotional issues in this episode of Bunny Girl Senpai. Banana Fish has some issues with insensitive racial stereotyping, in an otherwise action-heavy episode. Zombie Land Saga gifts us with a fantastic episode, which proves once again that studio Mappa currently represents a shining beacon for good LGBT representation in an industry that typically struggles to depict such characters. Karakuri Circus goes full metal puppet this episode, and stretches the bounds of our disbelief in ways that start to worry us, as well as airport security everywhere. Finally, Leo explains the flower imagery of Bloom Into You’s latest episode with an explanation of the meaning of the various colors of hydrangeas in Japanese culture.Recorded December 6, 2018. We try not to make total fools of ourselves while discussing the importance of Zombie Land Saga episode 8 and Bloom Into You. And of course, more Gridman!
On today's extra long show, Marc talks about This War of Mine and Override: Mech City Brawl, which are about as opposite as two games can be—can you guess which one is bleak and depressing and which one involves giant robots fighting giant monsters? (I sure can't). In addition to all that gaming goodness, Marc talks about even more current anime, including some yuri and one show that really loves dick jokes. Anyway, something-something inevitable and the opposite of intelligible, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly bonerific) show. The Talking Points: This War of Mine: Complete Edition, Override: Mech City Brawl, Just Cause 3, The Darkness, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Duke Nukem Forever, Bloom Into You, Run with the Wind, Golden Kamuy (Season 2)
Leo, Bcom, and Kat are back to cover week 7 of the Fall 2018 anime season! This episode Kat was a bit under the weather, but she powered through it to deliver your anime fix! We talked about the flaws of computer CD slot design and sneaky marketing tricks in the latest episode of The Girl in Twilight. Golden Kamuy gave us beary bad nightmares and fleshed out another of its side-characters with Ogata’s incredible backstory, which led us into a discussion of the psychology of psychopaths. We warned the listeners about the perils of listening to Evanescence as pre-game hype music in our section on Run With the Wind, where they finally run their first track meet, and Leo and Kat break down the mistakes in Kakeru’s race strategy. Sakuta’s expectations of our favorite Bunny Girl started to rub Kat the wrong way, and the explanations of the show’s physics phenomena are becoming even more ridiculous. Ash got under Dino’s skin in one of Banana Fish’s most explicit monologues to date. The decision to modernize the show, compared to the manga, has also led to some very awkward political commentary. Zombie Land Saga saved a bad C.G.I. dance performance with a shockingly funny twist. Karakuri Circus continued to set the bar for this season’s best animation with some excellent action scenes, but the characters began to get a bit too emo and overpowered for our taste. Finally, we picked up with the newest addition to our lineup, Bloom Into You, which kicked off the second half of its season by exploring Sayaka’s feelings, and introducing a new couple that can help guide her through the emotional turmoil she’s been enduring, even though their own relationship isn’t without its troubles. Leo thought it needed more karate chops.Recorded November 29, 2018. Wenn es draußen stürmt und die Blätter von den Bäumen fallen, ist es Zeit, dass wir Dimbula, Nejy, Yaku und in dieser Ausgabe zusätzlich Shin vor dem Computer verfrachten, damit sie die Animeneustarts der Herbstseason zu besprechen: Ob sie »Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai« an der Haustür abweisen, »That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime« durch ihren Garten wobbeln lassen, mit »RErideD - Derrida, who leaps through time« in eine Kyrokapsel steigen und »Bloom Into You« ihr Herz erwärmen lassen würden, verrät euch der erste Teil unserer vierteiligen (fünfteiligen?) Vorschau auf die neue Season.
I did not get this episode out before the anime aired, but that’s ok! The manga still exists, and is probably better than the anime because it isn’t on HIDIVE. This episode, we’re talking about Yumi Unita’s Bunny Drop published by Yen Press and Nio Nakatani’s Bloom Into You published by Seven Seas. That song you heard at the top of the episode was “Sweet Drop” by Puffy AmiYumi and the song you heard at the end of the episode is “High High High” by Kasarinchu, both from the Bunny Drop anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen’s writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. Listen Show notes: 0:35 – We talk about Bunny Drop! 18:10 – We talk about Bloom Into You! Next time is House of Five Leaves and Radiant!
The White Sox could avoid 100 losses this year, so some things are good. This episode, we’re doing a special episode on Douman Seiman’s The Voynich Hotel published by Seven Seas. It is a manga I do not think my regular podcast co-hosts would enjoy. So I bring on some good friends instead. The song you heard at the top of the episode is “Mayor Bloomberg (Giant Margaritas)” by Awkwafina. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find Chris on Twitter @gokuffy, and you can find Patz on Twitter @PatzPrime. You can find Patz’ podcast @CockpitPod or at The Cockpit. Listen Show notes: 0:58 – We just talk about The Voynich Hotel. Nothing else, though lots of digressions. Next time is still Bunny Drop and Bloom Into You!

Football season has started, the NFL is still a terrible organization, and the Chicago Bears couldn’t pull it off against the greatest quarterback to play, Aaron Rodgers. Sigh. This episode, we’re talking about Shigeru Mizuki’s Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths published by Drawn and Quarterly and Akiko Higashimura’s Tokyo Tarareba Girls published by Kodansha. That song you heard at the top of the episode is “The Weapon” (Part II of “Fear”) by Rush. Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month is going strong! We’ve been posting new movie reviews on our Youtube channel every day and plan to do so for the entire month of May! These reviews will also be uploaded to our podcast feed just a few days afterward. I’ve just put up our Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers podcast, a pairing of two remakes of beloved 90’s franchises that weren’t particularly well-received. Check it out and look forward to more new @ Movies podcasts popping up on our feed this month! Of course, @ Movies isn’t all we’re doing this month! We’ve got regular Manga Mavericks episodes planned too, just like the one you’re about to listen to! This week’s episode is kind of a back-to-basics affair. Both your regular Mavericks are present, there’s a normal amount of news to talk about, and we cover a few recent Jump Starts and one-shots to cap off the show! A pretty normal episode compared to the past couple of atypical entries. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing is a Bookscan list to talk about, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty to say about the next one. Before you listen to the show, I want to emphasize the content warning for the Gerard Jones story. There are some extremely graphic details we had to acknowledge that should be sickening to any sane human being. It made me physically ill when we were discussing it, and then again when I had to edit it. If you can’t stomach hearing about sexual violence towards children, then please, you are better off skipping that news piece because it is extremely upsetting. But hey, this isn’t a dour podcast by any stretch. I mean, we got to talk about loop theory, kaiju that can shoot lasers out of its arms, and a talking house that can transform into a giant mech! It’s irresponsible to ignore real-world problems to consume entertainment, but our discussion of these recent Jump Starts was a nice reminder of how valuable it can be to have a good manga to brighten up a bad day. Editor's Note, 2020: As a consequence of Nobuhiro Watsuki's charges being dropped (as discussed on this podcast), we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of Build King is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. Amanda and Jenny's Translator Tea Time podcast returns with a big time subject: how they feel when a work they're translating gets turned into an anime! Show Notes Amanda and Jenny return, and immediately lament on having to wait to translate some manga. For example, Amanda really wants to work on more Kiniro Mosaic. Amanda asks how many yuri titles Jenny's translating (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Secret of The Princess, Hana and Hina, Bloom Into You). This leads into the main subject: anime adaptations of manga they've worked on. How do they feel about it, do they watch the subtitles of an anime (Jenny makes a stunning admission about anime subtitles, though will admit it depends on the site -- Editor's note), do they watch it for work, etc. They also talk about how some perspectives of characters change thanks to how they're adapted. Amanda reveals the manga she translated that got an anime series, and...didn't like. (Jenny has yet to have that misfortune) Both talk about what titles they hope get turned into an anime. This eventually leads to them hoping for more yuri anime. Amanda apparently recommends an anime from the Winter 2017 season.
