Ancestral Science was honored to speak with Drs. MIWA TAKEUCHI & EUN-JI AMY KIM and learn how to be an ally/friend to Indigenous Science. We learned about the difference between allyship, friendship, and kinship, how to re-centre scientific voices of children, the Land, and Knowledge Keepers, how mathematics both take and give lives, reconciliation work never ends, and the importance of balancing both understanding the history and trauma of the original peoples of the land with the beauty, innovation, ingenuity, and science within their culture. Despite the guests concerns this episode may take space away from the voices and teachings of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, the pod hosts understand the importance of accomplices and allies; Indigenous people can't do this work alone. Jessie Anthony is the filmmaking force behind Brother, I Cry. The feature film follows Jon, a young First Nations man, as he struggles to overcome addiction and avoid the multiple warrants out on him. Brother, I Cry – which won the Audience Choice award at imagineNATIVE and earned Jessie the award for Best BC Emerging Filmmaker at the 2020 Vancouver International Film Festival – is a story about family, addiction, and the justice system, and the ways in which people can lose themselves in all three of these competing realities. It's evocative without being exploitative, honest without being traumatizing, and rich with empathy and heart. In short, Brother, I Cry is a stunning achievement in filmmaking, and doubly so when you consider that it's Jessie's first narrative feature. In this compelling and poignant interview, Jessie discusses the dream that led to Brother, I Cry, and where she'd like to take audiences next. Episode sponsor: Storyhive

Lee Shorten is an actor and a filmmaker who brings a unique perspective to both of those roles. As an actor, Lee digs for nuance and authenticity. We saw it in The Man in the High Castle. We saw it in The Terror: Infamy. And we saw it in It's Not You. It's Not Me, a short film about sexuality. As a filmmaker, Lee is sensitive and fearless. He wrote and directed Parabola, a moving short starring Hiro Kanagawa as an aging Yakuza assassin, and Mayumi Yoshida as his emotionally fraught daughter. Before that, he wrote and starred in a short film – The Day We Met – that was funded by Storyhive, co-directed by Mayumi and Nach Dudsdeemaytha, and inspired by his own adoption story. And he co-wrote and co-directed The Chaddening, a comedy short that gleefully mined horror film tropes. And Lee hasn't slowed down during COVID-19. He's still creating work – at least three films, at last count. In this thoughtful interview with Sabrina Furminger, Lee Shorten reflects on his films, his popular role on The Man in the High Castle (and lessons he learned from co-star Joel de la Fuente), and how he's pushing himself to stay creative during “The Quar.” Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

This week, we engage with a flurry of activists fighting the good fight for esports in the Vancouver, British Columbia area. I found them while I was watching the mini-documentary, "Smash Forward" (link below) from the group STORYHIVE (@Storyhive on Twitter!). Hearing how they're already reaching well beyond campus to participate and build their esports offerings is inspiring. These are the engagement levels that every college will aspire to have with all of their major clubs, not just esports. Give them a listen and cheer them on as they've got a full year ahead of them for what was planned, not including all of those special moments of random living life and directing hundreds of students' passion in gaming to see how things will change :). There only has been one other episode of this show in almost four years that has featured two guests being interviewed simultaneously. Today is episode number two. And it’s a powerful one so get ready to meet Nick and Katherine North, a beautiful couple living with their children in Canada.  Katherine was a cynic who didn't even believe in true love...until she accidentally fell in love at almost 40-years-old with her best friend, Nick.  But when they fell in love, he wasn't "Nick"... he was "Nikki." And, Nikki was pregnant with baby #4!  Assigned female at birth, Nick always knew deep down he was a man trapped in a woman's body. A stay-at-home pregnant mom and family photographer who didn’t think life could ever be any different, he was stuck in a life that should have made him happy but wasn’t his own.  Together, they navigated Nick's transition from female to male as a couple and as parents and as business owners. They negotiated the challenges of transitioning while blending a family and keeping their businesses afloat. They continue maneuvering through marriage, parenting five kids, nontraditional gender roles (who pays the bills and does the dishes?), and so much more. Nick and Katherine teach us that every family is different, and families can be more than the traditional man, woman and kids and it’s okay to live in our absolute truth. Once we own up to our truth, success will follow. Tune in to hear: How being more honest and open led Nick to be more successful in his business How Nick + Katherine have systematized their home life with clearly defined roles Why you should examine what old rules are you living by that need to be redefined so you can have harmonious friction How to speak from the scar, not the wound Why you should have conversations with your partner to come to agreement and mutual compromise on things you both want About their work to bring awareness to diverse and incredible families About Our Guests: With true stories, embarrassing anecdotes, and practical advice, Nick and Katherine North show their audience and clients how to start taking brave steps in their own lives, wherever they are starting.  Nick and Katherine recently received a grant from Storyhive to create a documentary film about their family called “Just Another Beautiful Family” and are developing the "Beautiful Families" project which will include a conference, podcast, and supportive online community for all sorts of nontraditional families. They have appeared on numerous stages and media outlets. xoxo Jenny P.S. Subscribe to the podcast + leave a review + rating to spread the GET GUTSY message far + wide. Means the world to me!
