The Brutal Murder Of Alberta MeadowsJump to the AD-FREE SAFE HOUSE EDITIONOnce upon a time, 1922 to be precise, Clara Phillips, a former Hollywood bathing beauty and chorus girl, decided she wanted to have a chat with a young lady she suspected of canoodling with her husband. She stopped at the dime store and bought a brand new hammer on the way. Yeah. That's not going to end well. This episode is filled with a lot of poignant stories of the incident from a variety of points of view, including from the alleged murderer herself, and a daring escape from justice. During the month of May, many states host an annual event on the governor's conference on "Aging." At these conferences, older Americans may learn new ways for healthy living and lifelong learning. Some time ago, my friend Mary shared an article entitled, "Nostalgia," which I feel may be interesting to our readers as they review the changes of the century. "Over the last 50 to 60 years, we have been witnesses to many changes in our lives...Here are just a few of them: We were born before cordless phones, fax machines and ice makers. Who ever heard of organ transplants or root canals? Horsepower was something to do with a horse. Callers rang the doorbell instead of blowing their horn. The fallout problem was something kept under your hat, and when folks sat down to dinner, they counted their blessings instead of calories. Guided missiles were rolling pins and frying pans. A babysitter was called a mother. A child had more brothers and sisters than fathers, and a car didn't wear out before it was paid for. A housewife canned food instead of taking it out of cans. Being a parent required more patience than money. Baths were taken once a week, and religion every day, and the only red menace was long winter underwear. $5 worth of groceries filled two bags, and when we were in school, the hard stuff meant algebra. We did without disposable diapers, velcro and scotch tape. Instead of the internet and the information superhighway, we had the party line. In our day, television was truly a luxury, and a black and white luxury at that. Tape meant to reel to reel, not cassettes or videos... and CDs were certificates of deposits, not compact discs, and owning a "hi-fi" was all the rage, and who could forget driving a Packard or a Nash? The only millionaires in baseball were the owners. Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. Cars in our time met running boards, cranks, Model A Roadsters and rumble seats. A mouse was a furry little creature, not part of a computer, and the only babes politicians kissed were those in their mother's arms. We were before Hawaii and Alaska became states, Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer, Snoopy, DDT, interstate highways, Holiday Inns, air conditioned cars and decaffeinated anything. We came from a time when we left our front door open. College kids swallowed goldfish, not alcohol, and in our day, songs had a tune and the words made sense. "Hippie" meant big in the hips. A trip meant travel. Bread came from bakeries, not the min. We were before microwave popcorn, child proof medicine bottles, and cars with cruise control. Streaking was what happened when you washed windows. Holidays were for getting together, not for getting away. And remember when a chick was a chicken, not the girl down the street? Tennis shoes were only worn in PE class. Bathing suits would cover your knees. And when you said, "I don't have anything to do," your parents said, "Find something to do!" In our day, we would swing and sway with Sammy K, waltz with Wayne King, dance to Guy Lombardo, and polka with Leo Greco. We have survived all of these changes and many more. What an exciting time to have lived." Warm Thought: Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80, anyone who keeps learning stays young. Dr Eimear Cotter, EPA, discusses the latest results from the testing of bathing water in Ireland.
A new report has found the water quality at all of Clare's bathing water sites to be "excellent". The Environmental Protection Agency's Bathing Water Quality Report for 2024 has deemed 81% of bathing waters nationwide to be of "excellent quality" which is the highest rate since 2014 when the classification was introduced. All 14 of Clare's bathing waters have received the top grade which indicates an improvement on last year when the quality of the water at Cappagh Pier in Kilrush was only found to be "good". Programme Manager with the EPA's Office of Evidence and Assessment, Jenny Deakin, has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons "continued ongoing sustained investment" will allow this trend to continue

That's according to a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency, which found the number of beaches with poor bathing water quality has decreased from five to two. Shane discusses the report findings with Eimear Cotter, Director of the EPA's Office of Evidence and Assessment.

For as long as he can remember, Leonard Koren has been searching for beauty and pleasure. Throughout his career, the author and artist—he prefers the term “creator”—has spent considerable time putting to paper expressions and conceptual views that architects, artists, designers, and others have long struggled to find the proper framing of or words for. In 1976, when he launched the counterculture publication WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, he ushered in the idea of “gourmet bathing,” which has maintained a potent cultural niche in the nearly 50 years since. With Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, published in 1994, Koren introduced the Japanese expression for “beautiful, imperfect, and impermanent” to the West, where it quickly took on a life of its own. Perhaps one of Koren's greatest talents is his rare ability to translate philosophical meditations on seemingly esoteric subjects into accessible, approachable texts about ways of being, seeing, thinking, making, and feeling. On the episode, Koren details his best—and worst—baths, and explains why he views his life as one long aesthetic experience.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Leonard Koren[4:01] “Undesigning the Bath”[7:30] Century Tower[7:30] 7132 Hotel (Therme Vals)[9:26] “WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing”[9:26] Max Palevsky[9:26] Craig Elwood[13:32] “From ‘WET' to ‘Wabi-Sabi': Leonard Koren's Adventurous Aesthetic Journey”[13:32] Mick Jagger[13:32] Richard Gere[13:32] Debbie Harry[17:09] Charlie Haas[18:25] “The Slow Lane”[18:25] Pilar Viladas[21:49] “How to Take a Japanese Bath”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi: Further Thoughts”[28:23] Okakura Kakuzō's “The Book of Tea”[31:38] Glenn Adamson[31:38] Sen no Rikyū[39:29] “Noise Reduction: A 10-Minute Meditation for Quieting the Mind”[42:32] “The Haggler's Handbook”[44:22] “283 Useful Ideas from Japan”[46:56] “The Flower Shop”[46:56] Blumenkraft[46:56] “On Creating Things Aesthetic”[46:56] “Which “Aesthetics” Do You Mean?”

Each winter, hundreds of thousands of tourists go to see the spectacle of Japan's snow monkeys bathing in the hot springs of Jigokudani Park in Nagano. Temperatures in the Japanese Alps plunge to around minus 20 and the macaques rely on the natural springs to survive the cold. With increasing visitor numbers to Japan, the monkeys have become the region's biggest attraction which is raising concern for their welfare. Staff here say the number of visitors to Jigokudani Park last year reached 257,000, the highest since it opened in 1964. The majority—60%—are from overseas. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) website, there were 36,869,900 foreign visitors to the country between January and December 2024—an increase of 47% from the previous year. Park director Toshio Hagiwara shares mixed feelings about the surge in visitors. The increase in visitor numbers has improved the park's finances but Hagiwara expresses concern over the impact of tourism, particularly as many people try to physically interact with the monkeys. "Some visitors do not follow rules—touching monkeys, throwing stones at them and trying to feed them. Inside (the park) we are strictly monitoring and giving them warnings, but some still do it sneakily as we cannot monitor the whole area, which has been quite a pain in the neck for us," he says. "As a company, our business is going well to the level that we can relax financially. There was a time that we were at the risk of closing the park. So compared to that, we are financially relaxed now thanks to them (tourists)." Hagiwara also warns that many visitors arrive ill-prepared for the snow-blanketed and potentially treacherous valley and many injure themselves. Among the well-prepared tourists is French visitor Mari Berbertiere, who's secured lodging near the park to catch the monkeys in the early morning before the crowds arrive. "Too many people. But I knew it was like that, so it is not a surprise," she says. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The city of Rostock, Germany, has just implemented a compulsory nudity rule at designated nude beaches in the seaside districts of Warnemünde and Markgrafenheide. This local ordinance mandates that visitors to these naturist-only zones, encompassing 37 beach sections along a 19 km stretch of coastline, must be entirely unclothed. Swimsuits, bikinis, and any form of clothing are prohibited in these areas. If you're caught clothed on one of these beaches, you may be asked by authorities to strip down or vacate. To be perfectly clear, this regulation applies only to Rostock's official FKK beaches and does not apply nationally. The city's beaches are now categorized into three distinct zones: naturist-only, mixed-use, and textile-only, ensuring that visitors can choose areas that align with their comfort levels. Enforcement measuresThe decision to enforce this ban arose from numerous complaints by naturists who felt uncomfortable due to the presence of clothed individuals in designated nude areas. Incidents involving clothed visitors allegedly gawking, taking photos, or otherwise disrupting the nude-friendly environment were reported. Rostock officials noted that many naturists felt their privacy was being compromised, prompting the city to adopt stricter guidelines. Rostock has a longstanding tradition of FKK culture, particularly in former East Germany, where social nudism was widely practiced. City officials believe that this rule protects the integrity of dedicated naturist spaces and ensures that naturists can feel at ease. Additionally, the increasing prevalence of smartphones has raised concerns about potential privacy violations, further justifying the need for clearer regulations. Beach wardens and local authorities will oversee compliance with the new rule. These officials have the authority to request that clothed individuals either disrobe or leave the FKK zones. If someone refuses to comply, they may be issued a Platzverweis (order to vacate the area). Notably, no fines are planned; enforcement will focus on resolving conflicts rather than imposing penalties.According to reports, wardens will patrol the nude beaches on foot or by beach buggy, but they themselves will remain clothed. The rule does not apply to passersby who are not staying on the beach—for example, someone briefly walking along the shoreline. Rostock has also designated textile-only zones to accommodate all preferences, ensuring that those who prefer to wear swimwear have separate spaces.Public reaction and controversyLocally, the rule has been welcomed by naturists and city officials, who view it as a reinforcement of proper etiquette and a deterrent against clothed onlookers. The Rostock city council broadly supported the measure, emphasizing it as a practical response to user complaints. However, international reactions have been mixed. Media coverage highlighted the unusual nature of the rule, as most laws regulate nudity by requiring clothing—this one does the opposite. Some headlines humorously framed it as a crackdown on “half-hearted naturism.” Critics argue that the rule might deter newcomers who are curious about naturism but hesitant to go fully nude. However, no major protests or legal challenges have emerged, and officials stress that common sense will guide enforcement. Germany's approach is unique. While the country has a strong FKK tradition, most of its nude beaches have historically been clothing-optional, much like those in other nudist-friendly nations. Even in places with long-established naturist cultures, mandatory nudity remains rare. France, home to its famous plages naturistes, generally allows swimwear even in designated nudist areas. Some beaches, like Port Leucate, post signs explicitly stating “le port du maillot de bain est interdit” (swimsuits forbidden), but enforcement is largely social rather than legal, relying on peer expectations rather than official action. Elsewhere, no such mandates exist, at least that I can find. Spain, Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. all have well-known nude beaches, but they remain clothing-optional, without any formal requirement for nudity. Rostock's decision stands apart—by legally enforcing a nude-only policy at its designated FKK beaches, the city has taken a rare step in formalizing naturist etiquette through law rather than tradition. In doing so, it extends the principle long observed in German spas—where nudity is required for hygiene—into the open, ensuring that its historic naturist beaches remain truly clothing-free.A model for naturist beachesRostock's enforcement of a nude-only rule is a significant milestone for preserving dedicated naturist spaces. The growing issue of textile encroachment on nude beaches has been a concern for years, with many naturists feeling uncomfortable in what should be their own spaces. This rule provides a clear solution: if a beach is designated as naturist, then it should be exclusively for naturists. By eliminating ambiguity, it strengthens naturist culture and protects privacy from unwanted intrusions. The rule now also provides a precedent. Naturist groups worldwide might consider advocating for similar policies in areas where textile beachgoers disrupt naturist spaces.

Japan is extremely popular among foreign tourists, yet signs prohibiting tattoos are still commonly seen at hot springs. In fact, the number of Japanese people with tattoos has been increasing. In this episode, we discussed this culture of banning tattoos in Japan. The script is available here: https://www.makiko-japanese.com/ I will update this episode on Youtube as soon as possible!!
