Bcom, Leo, and Kat discuss ongoing seasonal anime in this bi-weekly podcast.
Kat, Leo, and Bcom return to cover the anime that aired during Week 8 of the Spring 2020 season. In the latest episode of Wave, Listen to Me, we learn the hilarious story behind Minare’s strange name. Shinako is finally starting to confront her true feelings for Rikuo, while Rikuo wonders why he’s relieved that they haven’t take things to the next level, in the latest episode of Sing Yesterday. My Next Life as a Villainness engages in some isekai-ception, which has us wondering how deep the layers of isekai will go. An otherwise cute episode of Kakushigoto, about Hime naming their new dog and wanting a birthday party, also drip feeds us more info about her mother’s past. It becomes clear that Akito views Tohru Honda as his rival for the love of the Soma family, and it seems they’re going to end up on a collision course as Fruits Basket’s drama continues to build. Princess Connect falls victim to the episode 8 curse, and panders to its gacha game audience. Kaguya continues its excellent, but frustrating run, with a big tease where we almost see the main characters trick themselves into breaking through their détente. And finally, BNA’s latest episode teaches us that all cops are dogs, literally.Recorded June 25, 2020.Timestamps:1:23 - Nonsense (Kat talks about her continuing camping adventures, Leo raves about his Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, Bcom reviews The Last of Us Part II)15:19 - Wave, Listen to Me! Bcom, Kat, and Leo are back to chat about anime that aired during Week 7 of the Spring 2020 season. Our discussion of Wave, Listen to Me notes the reference to the movie In the Realm of the Senses, but Bcom forgets to mention that this was based on the real-life story of murderous Japanese geisha Sada Abe. We don’t necessarily love the way Yesterday wo Utatte keeps treading water, but we do love the new shmup-styled ED. We learn retroactively that truck-kun claimed another victim – the villainess, Catarina. But Catarina isn’t the only real-world person isekai’d into Fortune Lover… Kakushigoto gets us thinking about our pet’s life expectancy, which is depressing and sad, and becomes even more so when the show draws parallels to Hime’s parents. We struggle to determine whether Shigure is better or worse than Sugar Ray in the latest episode of Fruits Basket, and discuss American vs. Japanese recreational traditions. Princess Connect shows its gacha game roots by introducing more characters without laying the groundwork for us to care about them, but still manages to pull off some nice character development for Pecorine and Karyl. Bcom and Leo talk about their sordid past underwear stylings to discover if they are manwhores according to Yuu Ishigami. BNA touches on the politics of border controls, immigration, and refugee crises in its latest episode focuses on the plight of migratory bird beastmen.Recorded June 15, 2020.Timestamps:0:57 - Nonsense (Kat goes laid-back camping but for some reason can’t remember most of it, Leo very slowly experiences Destiny 2’s first live event, Bcom talks about the Playstation 5 reveal event and EA is finally making a spiritual successor to Bcom’s favorite game of all time with Star Wars: Squadrons)17:18 - Wave, Listen to Me! Leo, Kat and Bcom are back to chat about anime that aired during Week 6 of the Spring 2020 season. It’s midseason again, and that means it’s time to decide which shows to keep, and which shows to drop as we move forward. Things are getting awfully fishy in the latest episode of Wave, Listen to Me, and we pitch the idea for a new product called “gamer girl kuchikamizake.” We rave about Rikuo’s ex-girlfriend, Chika, in Sing “Yesterday” and wonder how we’d react if our ex-partners forced their way back into our lives. We worry that Bakarina can’t feel safe even when surrounded by her closest friends and family, because it turns out they’re pretty creepy sometimes. Clair undergoes a very strange “ritual” to determine whether she is trustworthy to join a new group of gatherers in the latest episode of Gleipnir. We get into a big argument that comes down to, “whose hat was it?!” when discussing Fruits Basket. The producers of Princess Connect decided to pay Kana Hanazawa good money to talk to a stump of wood for about 5 minutes, and it was money well spent. It’s student council election time in Kaguya-sama, as Miyuki and Miko face off in an epic debate in front of the entire school. With Nazuna’s introduction, our conversation on BNA inevitably goes off the rails into a full-on discussion on cults and religion. We then discuss potential replacement shows before moving into a lengthy bargaining session while deciding midseason cuts.Recorded May 31, 2020.Timestamps:1:28 - Nonsense (Bcom watched Paradise Kiss and it rocked. Kat, Leo, and Bcom are back to talk about anime that aired during Week 5 of the Spring 2020 season. The latest episode of Wave, Listen to Me was ruined by turtle poop. A romantic rival for Haru appears in Sing Yesterday, and Bcom grows somewhat more irritated by both Shinako and Haru for falling into the same unproductive patterns. Bakarina wins over the main heroine’s mother with some farming and kindness. Gleipnir continues to depict the sweatiest legs in anime. Arisa meets a new Souma, and becoming attached to him might lead her to be caught up in more Souma family drama. We get into a rant about skimpy outfits in anime in our coverage of Princess Connect, where the girls have to rescue Yuuki from a nightmare hospital. Chika’s maternal instincts kick in once again as Miyuki needs a mommy to guide him through his traumatic singing experiences. Finally, we talk about the latest episode of Baseball New Animal, which is the latest in a long tradition of great individual baseball episodes in non-sports anime.Recorded May 25, 2020.Timestamps:1:16 - Nonsense (Bcom warns listeners to avoid the anime White Album. Bcom, Leo, and Kat are back to chat about anime that aired during Week 4 of the Spring 2020 season. Minare continues to fend off Nakahara’s romantic advances until a strange, opportunistic woman shows up at the curry restaurant in Wave, Listen to Me. Bcom was very confused about a Rikuo doppelganger in the latest episode of Sing Yesterday. Bakarina continues to be oblivious to the effect she’s having on the people around her, and continues to strategize to avoid being exiled from the magical academy in My Next Life as a Villainess. We discuss the ups and downs of the trashy writing in the latest episode of Gleipnir. Leo decides that 90s windows weren’t as strong in explaining the events of the latest Fruits Basket episode. Kat can confirm there is in fact a llama girl introduced in the newest episode of Princess Connect, while Leo explains how wood-chopping works. Bcom enjoys the Bakemonogatari and Tanya the Evil references in the latest episode Kaguya-sama. Leo is annoyed that some ignorant humans don’t understand that dolphins breathe air, not water, in the latest episode of BNA.Recorded May 23, 2020.Timestamps: 2:35 - Nonsense (Leo’s Covid-proof rock climbing gym and broken footsteps in Call of Duty: Warzone. Leo, Kat and Bcom are back to chat about anime that aired during Week 3 of the Spring 2020 season. Minare discovers she isn’t the high-functioning drunk she always believed she was in the latest episode of Wave, Listen to Me. Episode 3 of Sing Yesterday convinces Bcom that Haru is a more multi-dimensional character than he had initially thought, and we all have a lot to say about this developing love quadrangle. The “Villainess” Katarina adds another girl to her growing harem before jumping into a time-skip that leads into the actual beginning of the otome game. We meet Clair’s mysterious sister Elena in the latest episode of Gleipnir, and she is very jealous upon finding Clair inside of Shuuichi’s suit. Yuki continues to find the courage to reach out to the people around him more often in Fruits Basket 2nd season. Leo is impressed by how the first three episodes of Princess Connect have crafted an interesting world, with hilarious characters, and have now laid out a roadmap for exploring their collective appetite for fried rice, among other delicious meals. Bcom argues that Kaguya season 1 truly should’ve ended with the ending of episode 3 of season 2, as it seems to be a natural, satisfying stopping point. Finally, the shady practices of Sylvasta Pharmaceutical are hinted at being connected with whatever made Michiru transform into a Beastman in BNA.Recorded May 17, 2020.Timestamps:2:57 - Nonsense (Kat has some more thoughts on Kakushigoto, Arte, and the Netflix reality show Love is Blind. Leo, Kat, and Bcom are back to finish off the Winter 2020 anime season with reviews of episodes from weeks 12 and 13. We have a lot of nonsense to talk about since we haven’t recorded for a few weeks and we’ve seen a lot of good, and bad, things in the meantime. We review the final episodes of all the anime we followed, and also talk briefly about some shows we watched outside of the podcast. Finally, we give our final scores and thoughts on the shows we watched in Winter season, and look forward to the Spring 2020 season…or what’s left of it.Recorded April 28, 2020.Timestamps:0:50 - Nonsense (Bcom jokes a little about the great battle of Aerith vs. Tifa with Final Fantasy VII Remake having come out before then jumping all over Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 on Netflix for its terrible quality. Bcom, Leo and Kat are back to break down the 11th week of the Winter 2020 anime season. Bcom breaks down an enormously impactful episode of Chihayafuru 3 where Chihaya and Taichi finally hash out their feelings. Hearing the buzzing sound of a drone in Eizouken gave Leo traumatic flashbacks of drone attacks in Call of Duty. We finally discover the identity of John Walker in an information-packed episode of ID: Invaded. Dorohedoro gives us key character backstory with En’s own hype movie, but also derails into a weird food contest than leaves Bcom annoyed by the show’s proclivity for wasting time. The Seton Academy girls continue their long-established tradition of enjoying gourmet animal poop. It seems like BOFURI is saving its remaining animation budget for the final episode as episode 11 looked pretty lackluster. Besides the revelation that male Incubi have two hearts (one for their body, and one for their dick), the penultimate episode of Interspecies Reviewers was a bit of a letdown.Recorded April 8, 2020.Timestamps:5:17 - Nonsense (Bcom watches Kimi ni Todoke to remember what living in a nice world is like, Kat and Leo debate their favorite characters from Netflix’ Tiger King, Leo updates us on season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone and some bugs they still need to work out)17:59 - Chihayafuru 3 (Ep. 23)33:05 - Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Kat, Bcom, and Leo return to talk about the 10th week of the Winter 2020 anime season. After watching Chihayafuru, Leo suggests that anime girls could just microwave chocolates for Valentine’s Day, and it’s not even that hard. The Eizouken girls channel their Studio Ghibli counterparts as they close in on finishing their final animation project. Narihisago tries to determine his true reality in the id well within an id well that he inhabits for over a year in ID: Invaded. Kat proposes the question whether you would choose to sign a piece of flesh paper from within your chest in order to get “married” like partner sorcerers in Dorohedoro have to do. Ranka has gone into heat and as you would expect, all hell breaks loose at Seton Academy. Bcom gets really upset when opposing guild members attack Syrup the turtle in the latest episode of BOFURI. Kiyoko’s backstory in Haikyuu reminds us of another track injury backstory from the anime After the Rain. Leo, Kat, and Bcom are back to discuss the 9th week of the Winter 2020 anime season. An intense showdown between Taichi and Arata triggers Kat’s yaoi alarms. It turns out the Eizouken club is just as underpaid as real-life animators are for the extreme amount of work they do. We begin to piece together the endgame of ID: Invaded as several revelations come to light. Bcom re-watches Dorohedoro several times to make sense of the latest info-packed episode. He also bangs his head against a wall as Kat believes the breast size comparison scenes in anime are not only realistic, but that guys compare dick sizes in locker rooms on a regular basis as well. We discuss whether Maple’s guild in BOFURI could’ve utilized a better strategy in their capture-the-orb event, before we devolve into debating the fanservice in the show. Leo gets insanely triggered by Daichi’s cell-phone alarm tone being the sound of dogs barking, while Bcom otherwise enjoys some good character-building in the latest episode of Haikyu. Since we’ve inevitably come to the necrophilia portion of Interspecies Reviewers, we discuss the various downsides of the practice, whether it be smell, temperature, or general creepiness.Recorded March 24, 2020.Note: Leo’s audio had a strange issue this episode, which we couldn’t isolate in audio editing, but has been fixed going forward. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are back to break down the 8th week of the Winter 2020 anime season. We admonish Arata for not practicing social distancing in the latest episode of Chihayafuru. Leo has some unique issues with Tsubame’s manta ray costume for the cultural festival, in what is otherwise one of Eizouken’s best episodes yet. If ID: Invaded wasn’t already similar enough to Inception, they find an id well within an id well this episode. Kat makes sense of the convoluted series of events leading up to the Blue Night in Dorohedoro. The Seton Academy characters have a whale of a time becoming aquatic performers. If you thought the power creep was out of control for Maple in Bofuri before this episode…you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. We might finally be done with practice matches in this season of Haikyuu. Kat, Bcom, and Leo are back to break down the 7th week of the Winter 2020 anime season. This episode contains some hilariously outdated takes on Coronavirus. We were all so optimistic back in early March. Bcom is disappointed that the Queen match doesn’t get enough focus in the latest episode of Chihayafuru. We learn about Tsubame’s long history of studying human movements and how it informs her animation in Eizouken. ID: Invaded reveals the identity of the main villain, John Walker, but we get the feeling we can’t take the writers at their word. Bcom is ecstatic as Dorohedoro delivers one of the best animated baseball episodes he’s seen in anime. We learn that Honey Badgers love the feeling of pain in the latest episode of Seton Academy. The BOFURI characters decide to try their hand at speedrunning dungeons to get even more broken upgrades than before. We find out that Tsukishima could jump higher if he wasn’t such a lazy bitch, in Haikyu. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are back to talk about the 4th week of the Winter 2020 anime season! Bcom recaps the lead-up to the Meijin and Queen match in the latest episode of Chihayafuru. We argue over whether Eizouken’s imagination sequences are worthwhile or whether the show would be more effective in a documentary format. Bcom breaks down how ID: Invaded references an early 20th century detective story this episode. Dorohedoro goes balls to the wall with some of its craziest plot developments and animation yet. We talk more than we really should about what is realistic vs. unrealistic wolf licking when it comes to Seton Academy. BOFURI introduces the cutest turtle in the history of anime – get rekt Squirtle – and Maple appropriately names him Syrup. Tall guys sometimes need a boost to their confidence to as we learn in the latest episode of Haikyu. And finally, we close out the episode with a scintillating and titillating review of the latest escapes of the Interspecies Reviewers.Recorded February 24, 2020. Leo, Bcom, and Kat are back to talk about the 3rd week of the Winter 2020 anime season! We chat about the Heian period practice of “morning after” poems, stemming from the latest episode of Chihayafuru. Bcom loved the Eizouken club’s conflict over prioritizing rule-of-cool or sakuga animation for their first project, although Sayaka’s steel chompers distracted Leo. ID:INVADED still has us arguing over how to pronounce the title. The cast of Dorohedoro basically find themselves in a George Romero zombie movie this episode, and we lose our heads over the background art and OP. Leo wishes he had his own pride of gal lion girls, while Kat ponders how tiny naked mole rats make love to their half-human queen in Seton Academy. Kat imagines a real-life fruit that tastes like a Starburst, inspired by the inventive food and wine that characters can eat on level 2 in BOFURI. Leo enjoyed Haikyu! Leo enjoyed a sports anime! Rejoice! Unfortunately, Kat watched a censored version of Interspecies Reviewers while Leo and Bcom watched the episode in all its glory, which leads to a LOT of pointless arguing. Nonetheless, our bickering is hilarious.Recorded February 20, 2020. Kat, Leo, and Bcom are back with the second half of their first impressions of the Winter 2020 anime season! Leo, Bcom, and Kat are back to finish off the Fall 2019 anime season and give you their final scores. This episode serves as a recap for the entire second half of the Fall 2019 season, as we were forced to skip several podcasts in December 2019. Kat, Leo, and Bcom are back…from the future…with a review of weeks 3 and 4 of the Fall 2019 anime season. As you’ll hear Leo say at the beginning of this episode, we were “trying to catch up,” but we totally didn’t. This episode was delayed for various reasons, but mostly because Bcom had a lot on his plate towards the end of 2019 and couldn’t get the episode edited. Despite the tardiness of the episode, we hope our listeners will still enjoy our early thoughts on the shows we chose to follow during the Fall season, and our usual shenanigans.Recorded December 3, 2019. Kat, Leo, and Bcom are back with the second half of their first impressions of the Fall 2019 anime season! Bcom kicks off the podcast by dishing out info on all of the anime screenings he saw in or around AnimeNYC. These included Konosuba – Legend of Crimson, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Fragtime, and Weathering With You. Then we cover the second half of new premieres for the season. Bcom explains why Kandagawa Jet Girls is the greatest anime of our generation. The Stars have aligned, whether they be Beast or human, but Leo’s more concerned with beasts Rising Up. Kat and Leo try to understand Chihayafuru since they ignored Bcom’s pleadings over the past year to catch up on the previous seasons of the show, which was as frustrating as it was hilarious. Kat makes a case for covering My Hero Academia season 4, and Leo makes a case for only paying attention to the pictures while “reading” the manga. Kat, Leo, and Bcom discuss the 11th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! Bcom compares the 1986 anime They Were Eleven with its modern counterpart, Astra Lost in Space. The Dumbbell girls celebrate New Years by walking up and ungodly number of steps. The Maidens decide it’s time to protest the oppressive regime at their school, so they can let their freak flags fly! Tanjirou gets the help of some little butterfly girls who help him stretch, train, and breathe in an effort to level up to be an even more effective Demon Slayer. Charce truly becomes Kanata’s right-hand man, in the penultimate episode of Astra Lost in Space, in a manner that causes Leo and Bcom to lose their minds. It turns out Watermelon girl’s watermelon helmet was way more essential than Kat ever expected, and to Bcom’s delight Dr. STONE re-designs it to be an everlasting part of her character design. We wrap up the final episode of Given and discuss how we felt about the way it concluded (or didn’t conclude) its various storylines. Apparently, Smokey the Bear never told the Vikings that “only you can prevent forest fires,” because they find themselves in the middle of a raging inferno. Carole & Tuesday set up for their final episode, with plans for one big concert to try to send a message to the people of Mars who are going down a dangerous path.Recorded October 11, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo discuss the 10th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! Bcom kicks things off by reviewing Studio 3Hz’s latest project, Blackfox: a totally decent movie. We propose ethical solutions to Japan’s birthrate issues during Kat’s recap of Dumbbell episode 10, and otherwise generally complain about some dumb developments. The Maidens start pushing the sexual tension to the max as emotions reach their peak in all of their relationships, and they find the confidence to make their moves and experience some crushing rejections. We then get into an extra flamboyant review of Demon Slayer’s latest episode, where the fate of Nezuko is decided. We finally found out who the traitor is in Kanata no Astra, and we start losing our minds at some of the more blatant plot conveniences in the backstory of the show. With the latest episode of Dr. STONE, Kat asks the age-old question…can you f*** a watermelon? We get annoyed at hair-cutting tropes in Given, and uncover a grand conspiracy common to LGBT anime adaptations. Thorkell wreaks havoc on the Danes’ best-laid plans in Vinland Saga, and Canute cannot communicate his feelings. The Mars Grammy awards roll around, and Carole and Tuesday collaborate with Crystal to deliver a moving performance, which is quickly overshadowed by Angela laying her soul bare.Recorded October 8, 2019. Leo, Bcom, and Kat discuss the 9th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! During our Dumbbell discussion, Kat tells us what her bodybuilder friend thought about the episode, and we also talk about how impossible it is to open jars. The Maidens are getting all lovey-dovey and it seems like everything is going well with their Little Princes, but rest assured, these girls aren’t alright. This week’s episode of Demon Slayer was a gigantic info dump introducing the Hashira, and putting poor little Nezuko on trial for being a demon. We also vote on which members of the Hashira we think will bite the dust first. The goals of the Astra crew’s parents are revealed and we also find out that Polina’s not in Kansas anymore. After the break, we return with an electrifying episode of Dr. STONE, where Senku persuades a spy from Tsukasa’s camp to join the Kingdom of Science with using magnet-creation techniques from NASA. Given is actually able to pull off an emotionally moving performance, which saves the show from tanking entirely. In the latest episode of Vinland Saga, the London Bridge is not falling down, because a Viking named Thorkell is fighting on behalf of the English in the latest episode of Vinland Saga. Finally, with Carole and Tuesday, it’s Christmas time at the Mars Grammy awards, and things are quickly going downhill for Angela, as she tries to come to turns with losing everything important in her life.Recorded October 2, 2019. Kat, Leo and Bcom discuss the 8th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! This week the Dumbbell girls climb a haunted mountain and, like meat, it went bad. The Maidens explore how many confessions they can pack into just one episode. Nezuko’s cute shrinking powers beg the question of whether she can grow to the size of a Gundam and stomp all the demons underneath her giant feet. This week’s episode of Astra turns into that one comic panel of Spider-Man pointing at other Spider-Man, as the show begins to embrace the ridiculousness of life. Dr. STONE somehow gets us into an argument about limited antibiotic resistance and superbugs, before arguing even more about whether Suika can keep the watermelon on her head for the entire length of the show with no explanation. Given finally delves into Mafuyu’s tragic backstory, as it sets up for a performance, which will likely determine whether the show sinks or swims. In Vinland Saga, Askeladd teaches us all about how to win friends and influence people, using the knowledge that everyone around him is a slave to something, which makes it possible to use them to fulfil his own ambitions. Finally, the Grammy Awards still exist on Mars and are still boring and irrelevant, but luckily rapper Denzel Curry is here to give the show some much-needed edginess.Recorded September 26, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are here to break down the 7th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! We kick off the podcast with some thoughts from Bcom and Kat about Trigger’s latest film, PROMARE. In this week’s anime, Dumbbell has become an idol show, and Kat is not amused. The Maidens have a very jiggly pillow fight to express their growing frustration with each other. After Tanjiro’s huge battle with Rui, Demon Slayer starts delving into the tragic backstory of the pretend spider family that Rui has built around himself. Then we get into the first of our midseason replacements, with a big recap of Astra Lost in Space and discussion of episode 7, where we try to puzzle out who the traitor could be. Dr. STONE begins recruiting the help of some villagers to build his Kingdom of Science into a force to be reckoned with. Leo takes a nap through Kat’s excellent review of episode 7 of Given, which is getting better with each passing episode. Bcom recaps episodes 4-6 of Vinland Saga before jumping into episode 7, where Askeladd’s Vikings use some badass tactics to plunder a Frankish stronghold, and Thorfinn earns another duel to avenge his father’s death by Naruto-running all over the battlefield. Finally, in Carole & Tuesday, Angela’s stalker is finally dealt with by none other than Mr. Tao who is able to out-think the annoying hacker pest.Recorded September 22, 2019. Leo, Bcom and Kat are back to review the 6th week of the Summer 2019 anime season and to make their midseason cuts! We kick off our nonsense with Kat’s cautionary tale of partying so hard in Montreal that she gave herself a fever of 103 with a side of strep throat. Leo continues to experience multiplayer issues with Remnant from the Ashes. Bcom beat Control and had a great time with it, with some minor drawbacks. When we finally around to talking about anime, Dumbbell’s arm-wrestling episode went full Over the Top, and Bcom breaks out a horribly stereotypical Russian accent. The lit club girls clash against their school’s prude restrictions as they try to dream up a romantic theme for their school’s festival. Then, it’s time for episode 19 of Demon Slayer, which was an incredible showcase of studio Ufotable’s animation talent, and Yuki Kajiura’s musical composition. BEM continues to be a weird, directionless monster-of-the-week show, that we thankfully may never have to talk about again! In Dr. STONE, Senku is miraculously saved by the power of…a Doctor Stone! Ritsuka’s emotional understanding of Satou is finally starting to progress as Given begins to find its rhythm halfway through the show. A talking cat familiar in the Demon Girl Next Door finally declares that “the time hath come” for Bcom to take a long, hard look about whether he wants to continue covering this cutesy anime. And finally, in Carole & Tuesday, Tuesday experiences some innocent heartbreak, while her mother takes advantage of suspicious terrorist activities to advance her fearmongering political campaign. Kat, Leo and Bcom are back to review the 5th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! We kick things off with Kat ranting about her hilariously awful experience with Groupon customer service. Leo updates us on his continuing trouble with Remnant of the Ashes, and Bcom reviews then 1979 anime adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Once we get into weekly anime, it’s time to get in running shape for the Dumbbell girls, which means working hamstrings and abdominal muscles, to embrace their inner Flo-Jo. Two of the Maidens have their eyes set on much older men in their savage seasons, which leads to some very awkward interactions, but the episode ends on a high note with one of the cutest anime confession scenes we’ve watched in a long time. We spend more time hyping up Demon Slayer ep. 19 than actually properly covering episode 18. We wrap up another disappointing episode of BEM with complaints about its directionless story and weak animation from Kat and Bcom. After the break, we get into a divisive episode of Dr. STONE, which had us arguing about whether or not the second half flashback was a waste of our time, and who we would choose to kill off between ourselves, our lovers, or our friends. Our Given segment becomes a storytelling session about our experiences with love at first sight. This week’s Demon Girl Next Door review is a shitshow of the highest order, which Bcom very professionally manages to soldier through. And finally, in Carole and Tuesday, Ertegun has to do some thinking about what he truly wants to be as an artist after tragically handing his financial portfolio over to a horny Pinocchio robot.Recorded August 28, 2019. Bcom, Kat and Leo are back to discuss the 4th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! We kick it off with a bunch of gaming nonsense, and Bcom and Kat both ask listeners for gaming recommendations in a packed late August game release calendar. Once we move onto anime, in Dumbbell, we are puzzled by how different Silverman’s Gym’s operation is from the gyms we know and frequent in the United States. Leo’s not sure if he knows enough words to fill 50 pages like Rika’s love interest in O Maidens. Demon Slayer takes its best shot at making Zenitsu great again, but we’re left relatively unmoved. Dr. STONE already has Yuzuriha trying to sacrifice her life for her male co-stars, which leaves Bcom unamused, and ends with a pretty obviously toothless cliffhanger. Given takes a detour to talk about guitar pedals, which Bcom is very familiar with due to his guitar-enthusiast dad’s expensive quest to create the perfect sound. Bcom isn’t so impressed with episode 4 of the Demon Girl Next Door, and Leo and Kat retreat into the inner recesses of their mind (i.e. take a nap) while he breaks it down. We close things out with Carole & Tuesday, which introduces us to a star named Flora whose past is intertwined with Gus, and shows us a darker side of the music industry.Recorded August 26, 2019. Leo, Bcom, and Kat are back to chat about the 3rd week of the Summer 2019 anime season! A cosplaying teacher joins the dumbbell squad in the latest episode, and we talk a lot about your biceps brachii muscle. In the latest Episode of O Maidens, Kazusa realizes that Izumi watches porn, but is at least reassured that it’s porn related to his transportation otaku hobbies. Kat launches her “Demon Slayer is actually a BL” political campaign, and to be fair she has some strong evidence. The latest episode of BEM represents another in a long line of heated gamer moments. Kat has some advice for Tsukasa from Dr. STONE, which is that when you have to come up with a different word for murder in order to justify it, you might have some issues. Kat has watched so much yaoi that she accurately predicted pretty much everything about Given’s plot. Leo also shakes us to our core with his interpretation of Mafuyu’s singing voice. By the way, the music anime Kat was alluding to in this section was Anonymous Noise. Bcom desperately tries to explain to Kat and Leo why he finds The Demon Girl Next Door so funny. Carole & Tuesday introduces anime David Bowie to the show in an episode that intelligently juxtaposes the show’s political commentary against its belief in the power of music to bring people together.Recorded August 19, 2019. Kat, Leo and Bcom finish up the Spring 2019 anime season with our thoughts on each finale individually, as well as the season as a whole. After the initial recording, news of the Kyoto Animation fire hit, which Bcom takes some time to address at the beginning of the episode. As a heads up, during our review of the final episode of Dororo, there is some discussion of death by fire and/or smoke inhalation, which you may want to skip. The Dororo segment runs from 1:04:37 to 1:25:20 if you would rather avoid it. Otherwise, it’s just another typical goofy podcast from us, which we hope will raise your spirits!Recorded July 15, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo discuss week 11 of the Spring 2019 anime season. Bcom leads off the podcast with a rave retro review of the first season of Sailor Moon while Kat details her plans for Anime Expo. We jump into a debate about how much Fruits Basket’s Tohru can give of herself to others before it becomes self-harming. It’s about that time in JoJo to start getting really confused about what’s going on, but we do our best to make sense of Chariot Requiem and his arrow of doom. Demon Slayer introduces an extremely annoying new character who Leo determines has less of a backbone than Bocchi Hitori, which is…impressive. Dororo deftly explains the entire philosophy of the show in a climactic debate about how to resolve the conflict between Hyakkimaru and Tahoumaru. The great Attack on Titan lore dump continues with another jam-packed episode where characters keep making excuses for Eren who is having a series of 15-year-old moments. Leo tells us that he grew up with someone just like Garou from One Punch Man, and that guy didn’t turn out very well either. We close out the final episode of Sarazanmai, and try to break down the quite literal abstract concepts that Ikuhara has expressed in wrapping up the show. Finally, we end the episode by discussing whether Carole and Tuesday deserve to keep moving on through the Mars Brightest contest given the strong competition they’ve been facing.Recorded July 2, 2019. Leo, Bcom, and Kat discuss week 10 of the Spring 2019 anime season. Bcom kicks things off by poking some fun at Netflix’ new translation of Evangelion. Kat strategizes the best way to give a boy Valentine’s Day chocolates in our discussion of Fruits Basket. The cast of JoJo have an out of body experience in the latest episode and Mista learns the pain of wearing cute panties. We debate whether the crow or a soon-to-be-introduced character from Demon Slayer is the most annoying character of the season. Everyone’s getting extra arms and eyes in Dororo now, as the series comes to its epic climax. Attack on Titan episode “That Day” takes about an entire day to record, because it’s one epic lore dump. Orochimaru apparently showed up in One Punch Man this week, or at least we thought he did. The reveal of Reo’s true name in Sarazanmai absolutely infuriates Bcom who realizes he missed out on 9 weeks of Leo puns. And finally, we close out the episode with some speculation about the latest dramatic events between Tuesday and her stalker Cybelle, who may have ruined the girls’ chances in the Mars Brightest contest.Recorded June 25, 2019. Kat, Leo, and Bcom discuss week 9 of the Spring 2019 anime season. In the latest episode of Fruits Basket, the zodiac cow is able to hide in plain sight to the annoyance of Kat. Jojo’s Polnareff apologizes for assuming a character’s gender, which is quite progressive for when this manga was actually written. Bcom breaks down temari and kemari in an action-packed episode of Demon Slayer. Dororo has gone a lot of weird places, but now it has pokemon apparently too. And finally, in Attack on Titan we finally found out what’s in the basement…sort of. One Punch Man aired an episode. It was a thing that happened. Sarazanmai’s latest episode forces Tooi to choose to connect with either older brother or his close friends. The beat of GGK’s song in Carole & Tuesday breaks Leo’s brain, and that’s before the Mermaid Sisters even take the stage.Recorded June 18, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo discuss week 8 of the Spring 2019 anime season. We kick things off with a bit of an E3 wrap-up and our thoughts about the current state of the console wars. Kat then chats about her convention coffee nightmare, and how she whipped her co-worker into shape, both of which are certainly related acts. Once we get into anime, Leo is growing a bit bored of Fruits Basket, which continues to be somewhat directionless. An old JoJo character shows up in Golden Wind in a Silver Chariot, and Bcom totally forgets what Doppio looks like. Demon Slayer showed off the diabolical power of its main villain, Muzan Kibutsuji, and also shows off the legs of its childlike, but somehow not childlike little sister, Nezuko. Hyakkimaru continues to lose more of his humanity in his quest to regain his human body as Dororo gears up for its final stretch. During Attack on Titan, Kat determines that she needs to buy Bcom a Hange Zoe body pillow, and Bcom details exactly what he’d want from such a product. Kat tells us all about Big Daddy One Punch and rants about the absurdity of Watchdog Man. Sarazanmai teaches us the disastrous consequences of putting too much pepper in your cucumber ramen. Kat wants to “pow” M-Pop artist Pyotr right in his Justin Bieber-esque face, as Carole & Tuesday moves into its American Idol arc.Recorded June 13, 2019. Leo, Bcom and Kat discuss week 7 of the Spring 2019 anime season. This week we break down the double announcement of Google Stadia and a Destiny 2 expansion, which left us with polar opposite impressions. We jump into Fruits Basket episode 7, where Spring comes, Winter melts, and Kat can’t handle any of it. The latest episode of JoJo delivers on a fan-favorite moment from the manga with the help of the Muda Muda Staff. Bcom nitpicks the living hell out of the latest episode of Demon Slayer, where everything is unclear, but at least Leo’s crow impression is right on target. We really didn’t like the latest episode of Dororo, but luckily we’re saying the opposite of what we mean. The latest episode of Attack on Titan is filled with various acts of heroism and sacrifice, making for one of the most emotional roller coasters of the season so far. Kat chooses this moment to provide the young listeners in our audience with a very important PSA. One Punch Man continues to try to explore multiple storylines at once, and Bcom’s not thrilled with the show’s execution. Just when things seem to be getting better in Sarazanmai, the rug is pulled out from under us, and there’s more drama than we thought. Carole & Tuesday’s latest shortcut to stardom is through a talent competition, which showcases some of Mars’ best, but mostly its weirdest performers.Recorded June 6, 2019. Kat, Leo, and Bcom discuss week 6 of the Spring 2019 anime season. It’s the halfway point of the season, which means it’s time to debate midseason cuts, which you can find towards the end of the podcast. Before we jump into anime, Leo talks about how he literally couldn’t see the monsters in the latest Godzilla movie. Kat is more concerned about the anatomical intricacies of a Mothra-Godzilla pairing. We also chat about a pair of Russia-centric TV shows in The Americans and Chernobyl that Bcom and Kat recommend checking out. In episode 6 of Fruits Basket, Kat is absolutely livid with Tohru for being a [very naïve person]. Yeah, let’s go with that censoring. It also introduces the trope of the mysterious childhood love interest, which has us all rolling our eyes. Kat continues to demand an explanation for Bruno’s zombie-like state in JoJo, and also questions the Roman police’s lackadaisical response to an apocalypse breaking out in the middle of their city. Demon Slayer’s sound director went a little overboard with the grinding teeth noises of this episode’s multiple personality disordered demon. Kat is shocked at Tanjiro’s incredible acrobatic moves with his big hoop earrings getting in the way. We get distracted by the demon “frog” shark in the latest episode of Dororo, and we complain about taxonomy for a bit. We also manage to disagree on multiple tiny, insignificant aspects of the episode. Bcom is very excited at the confirmation that baseball exists in the Attack on Titan universe. Kat decries the horrible existence of Cockroach Man in the latest episode of One Punch Man, and wonders how deep the psychic connection between Tatsumaki and Hellish Blizzard really goes. She also loses it over the introduction of our latest eponymous hero, Snek. Keppi shows off his pole dancing skills in this week’s Sarazanmai, and the emotional wound between Kazuki and Haruka is finally mended. Carole & Tuesday get the opportunity to perform in front of a huge crowd, but it doesn’t go exactly as planned. As for us, we fell in love with the newly introduced characters of Skip and Crystal who have subtle, but well-established chemistry. Finally, we move into our discussion of potential midseason cuts, and discuss several other shows that we’ve been keeping up with as potential replacements.Recorded June 3, 2019. Bcom, Kat and Leo discuss week 5 of the Spring 2019 anime season. It turns out we all saw John Wick 3 this week, so we start out by raving about how fun the third installment of the franchise was. We move on to Fruits Basket, where Tohru is away from the Souma household for much less time than we initially expected. Bcom is annoyed that JoJo’s part 5 has basically given us the equivalent of “Stand midichlorians,” in a completely unnecessary explanation of the origin of Stand powers. Demon Slayer introduces Tanjiro to his new sword, but more importantly, his new crow, which Kat and Leo both mimic to the best of their ability. Yuki Souma makes a guest appearance in Dororo in his rat form, but he’s gained a bit of weight and it’s given him a nasty attitude. Armin tries to get under Bertholdt’s skin, and Mikasa tries to attack him, but it’s clear in this episode of Attack on Titan that the Colossal Titan has matured into a very different person. Bcom wonders if Saitama or Metal Bat’s little sister has a stronger slap, as they seem equally effective in the latest episode of One Punch Man. ONE also continues to display his obsession with introducing way too many goofy characters at once. With the latest episode of Sarazanmai, as Leo puts it, Kazuki’s “inner Sasuke” is very strong, and Bcom attempts to make sense of his many conflicting emotions. After Kat ponders the point of A.I. pets in the latest episode of Carole & Tuesday, Leo tears up at the girls’ first live concert.Recorded May 26, 2019. Leo, Kat and Bcom discuss week 4 of the Spring 2019 anime season. Fruits Basket introduces us to the newest member of the zodiac family, the boar, whose tsundere antics annoyed Bcom. Kat imagines what it would be like having her mouth sewn shut as we discuss the latest episode of JoJo, where we lost one of our heroes. Tanjiro learns how to use his water vaping techniques to defeat his first major demon. While Bcom was horrified by the carnage of the pet sharks in episode 16 of Dororo, Kat, an intellectual, just kept thinking of the Baby Shark dance. The scouts use a new weapon to bring the Armored Titan to its knees, and Kat learns the difference between Erwin and Armin. The latest episode of One Punch Man has Kat and Bcom imagining a “Centibuddies” anime following the activities of Centisenpai and Centikouhai. Leo drunk watches Sarazanmai, which unfortunately didn’t improve his viewing experience. Carole & Tuesday make the best worst music video of all time, and Leo guest stars in the show as a beer-drinking robot.Recorded May 13, 2019. Kat, Leo and Bcom return to break down the 3rd week of the Spring 2019 anime season! After an intro where Kat channels her perfect impression of Laura Bailey’s Tohru Honda, Bcom kicks off the nonsense section by warning people off SAO: Alicization, and raving about Nichijou. Kat gives her spoiler-filled thoughts on the 3rd and 4th episodes of the final season of Game of Thrones. She then somehow traumatizes herself by comparing Kyou’s “dud” rice balls with Bertie Bott’s booger-flavored beans in our discussion of this week’s Fruits Basket. Kat also predicts that Leo will die due to a lack of chives in his diet. Leo can’t get over Doppio’s bizarre name and Kat fact-checks the amount of iron that would be available in the human body to pull off some of Risotto’s stand powers. Nezuko catches up on some much-needed sleep while Tanjiro spends 2 years on an epic shounen training arc in Demon Slayer. Bcom feels like Dororo’s latest episode covered some of the same ground unnecessarily, but Kat was more focused on the viability of sexing up a ghoul. Attack on Titan started a few weeks late, so we finally get a chance to dive into the first episode of season 3’s second half. Let’s be honest, it’s just season 4. Kat has some Tank Top Trouble telling characters apart in One Punch Man and her inner gyaru girl leaks out. We have a butt suckin’ good time talking about Enta’s hallucinations in the latest episode of Sarazanmai. Bcom is pissed that everyone ordered the same exact pizza at Carole and Tuesday’s meeting with their new manager, and Kat explains that no girl in their right mind goes swimming in full make-up. We also debate the realism of New Yorkers joining in with the Dancing Laundry musical scene, rather than yelling at the girls to shut up.Recorded May 6, 2019. Bcom, Leo and Kat are back with their first impressions of the Spring 2019 anime season! We kick things off with a short spoiler discussion of Avengers: Endgame, which we were all dying to chat about. Then we dive into this anime season, which despite having fewer shows airing overall than in Winter, still has some major standouts that we’re excited about. Of course, it also contains some absolute steaming piles of trash, which we take great pleasure in ripping to pieces. Leo, Kat and Bcom close out Winter 2019 with reviews of the 12th and final week of the anime season. We finished off the last two episodes of Mob Psycho II, which left us wishing the show had kept the tone of the first half of the season, rather than switching half-way through. Run With the Wind defied our expectations and gave us a very satisfying ending to the running boys’ journey. Kemurikusa hinted at a potential sequel while also wrapping up the emotional arc of the narrative in a neat way. Domestic Girlfriend got dumber than ever before, and had us all wigging out. The first half of the Kaguya finale had Bcom squeeing over both the romantic fireworks and the fantastic direction and cinematography. Dororo finishes off its first half by giving us more plot development with Hyakkimaru’s family than we had expected to get at the half-way point. We move on to some quick reviews of the shows we watched outside of the podcast, before finishing off the season with our final reviews and scores!Recorded April 20, 2019. Kat, Leo, and Bcom are back to discuss week 11 of the Winter 2019 anime season. Mob continues to preach philosophy to villains we don’t really care about as we struggle to care about anything outside the brilliantly animated fights of Mob Psycho II’s 11th episode. Run With the Wind sprints forward with King passing the sash onto Kakeru who enters another running dimension, which Kat think just sounds painful. Bcom is blown away by just how well Kemurikusa brought all of the threads of its sci-fi narrative together, while raising even more interesting questions. The Promised Neverland pulls off a big surprise in its penultimate episode, but we get bogged down in the psychological logistics of cutting off your own appendages. Jojo episode 24 prompts us to talk about airplane depressurization and respecting Notorious B.I.G.’s legacy, as only JoJo can. Domestic Girlfriend adds an unlikely member to Natsuo’s harem and finally hits at making Hina and Natsuo face consequences for their reckless public displays of affection. Bcom enjoyed the fanservice in this week’s episode and Chika’s ramen adventures, but Leo felt the last skit represented too much of a tone-shift from the normal comedic shenanigans of the show. We also finish off with the first of a two-part arc of Dororo, which will finish off the season by re-uniting Hyakkimaru with his family and Chevy Tahoumaru.Recorded April 19, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are back for week 10 of the Winter 2019 anime season. We weren’t that pleased with this week’s episode of Mob Psycho, but we did get some great advice from Kat to the youth of the world, and learned about Chinese Hopping Vampires. Run With the Wind focused on Yuki and Nico’s sections of the final race, and we had some handy advice for Yuki’s mom and Leo asks which guy of the group Kat would bang if given the opportunity. This of course transitions into Kat asking which of the Kemurikusa girls Leo and Bcom would pick. Bcom and Leo also introduce Kat to the glory of the movie Demolition Man, when explaining the scene where Wakaba touches Rin’s memory leaf. Bcom has some thoughts about the timeline that The Promised Neverland takes place in and we have some interesting ideas about Norman’s fate after leaving the orphanage. Jojo gave us an epic battle between The Clash and Aerosmith this week, but Kat just got lost in Tiziano’s eyes and hair. Domestic Girlfriend gets us on the topic of the trope of girls who can’t cook in anime, and we collectively roll our eyes at the way in which even Natsuo’s misfortunate injury turns into more opportunities for sexy times with his sisters. We break down the many, many issues we had with this week’s episode of Kaguya-sama, and detail some ways we wish they had been clearer about Kaguya’s desires. We finish off with an episode of Dororo that had us craving for crab meat and butter, and Leo tells us about how he almost got sucked into a drained lakebed.Recorded April 4, 2019. Leo, Bcom, and Kat are back to talk about week 9 of the Winter 2019 anime season. Bcom raves about his early experiences with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Kat went to see Us and encourages people to go see it. Leo saw Captain Marvel, and felt pretty meh about it. Kat is disappointed that Mob Psycho II episode 9 didn’t stick to its guns and walked back the dramatic climax of last week’s episode. Instead it introduced a variety of new elements that had us feeling a little narrative whiplash. We argue a bit over whether Run With the Wind’s latest episode was too overdramatic, and come to several different verdicts. We meet “two” new sisters in Kemurikusa who start to complete the puzzle about the mysterious past of the show, and Kat begins to lose her mind over the disparity between her opinion on the show and Leo’s. We watched The Promised Neverland and…Ray has fetus memories, which Kat brilliantly refers to as plot spackle. Yeah. Moving on, Kat’s cat takes issue with her making blatantly racist requests of Bcom during our JoJo Part 5 discussion and viciously attacks her on Bcom’s behalf. Kat calls Narancia a hick, and Leo engages in some serious hick gate-keeping and gives us a lesson in true hickness. We finally reach the point of Domestic Girlfriend where Leo began to lose faith in the manga, and when Bcom starts to get a sense that this anime is reaching for heights even stupider than he expected. Kaguya has its first truly connected three-part episode, which impresses us on the one hand, but the content of the main gag leaves us questioning if the same jokes couldn’t have been executed in a smarter way. Finally, Leo gets to reveal an important fact about Dororo that he’s known since last podcast, and wishes we had known this information from the beginning of the show.Recorded March 25, 2019.
