In 2015, the gentlemanly world of professional curling was rocked by a new breakthrough. A team debuted the Hardline broom, one whose brushes were incredibly effective at guiding the gliding rock across the ice to the target with astonishing precision. Opponents bristled, claiming the Hardline broom provided an unfair advantage. Then a competing manufacturer unveiled an even better broom, one that practically allowed players to steer the rock. In a sport operating mostly on handshakes, this broom arms race threatened to alter the game and sweep away the bonds among the curling community. In the podcast “Broomgate: A Curling Scandal” from CBC and USG Audio, comedian and curler John Cullen recounts those rancorous days when gamesmanship nearly won over sportsmanship in the most unlikely of athletic controversies. Cullen talks to the central figures who brought curling to the brink, but later found a way to preserve the sport.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "BROOMGATE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.  In 1997, a 13-year-old Black kid from the South Side named Lenard Clark was beaten into a coma by a gang of white boys as he rode his bike through the Bridgeport neighborhood. The hate crime made national news with figures like President Bill Clinton providing commentary. But his talking points, like many in the media in the weeks following Clark's beating, were hastily focused on reconciliation and forgiveness. A new podcast “You Didn't See Nothin” reexamines Clark's story to explore how racial segregation, powerful connections, and media narratives shaped this tragedy. We begin our episode with our annual Edgar Allan Poe toast to celebrate Halloween. This year we read Spirits of the Dead and then discuss Poe's booze of choice. We also talk about the absinthe we drank for the toast. After that, we are super excited to have Nicolás Obregón back on the podcast. Author of the Inspector Iwata trilogy—featuring the novels Blue Light Yokohama, Sins as Scarlett, and Unknown Male—Nic is the host of the new true crime podcast, Faceless.  Throughout this episode, we discuss the infamous Setagaya family murder that occurred in Tokyo in the year 2000. The murder was so brutal that it not only shocked Japan, it changed its society. We cover some possible theories of the murders as well as discuss some things that didn't make it on Faceless (put out by USG Audio, the podcast arm of Universal Studio Group). At the end of the episode, Nic tells us about his current projects and we discuss writing for a bit. You can read more about Faceless at https://deadline.com/2022/09/usg-audio-faceless-true-crime-podcast-1235128782/ You can also check out Nic's other work at http://obregonbooks.com/ Finally, you can follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @dpwpodcast

So what would it look like if we ditched the stuffy funeral homes, skipped the expensive caskets, and designed our funerals before we died? Death doula Jill Schock helps her clients have end of life celebrations that feel unique to the life they lived. In this episode, she guides writer and producer Greg Heller through a practice run of his own funeral.

But there's gotta be more options, right? Uninspired with what's on offer, comedian and journalist Francesca Fiorentini went on a tour of how to dispose of a dead body to get some ideas of what she'll do with her eventual corpse. First, she visits Walt Patrick at Herland Forest, a green burial site in Washington that's composting human bodies. Then, she gets a peek into Celestis, the space burial company that'll shoot your remains into space.
