On the pod today, Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro return to discuss their latest for Netflix, American Murder: Gabby Petito.   Mike previously had Julia and Michael on to talk about Murdaugh Murders, and like that effort, this series both fulfills the expectations of the true crime genre, while finding deeper themes to explore.  While in Murdaugh Murders, Julia and Michael turned their lens on the socioeconomic fissures in the heart of a Southern county, here, in telling the story of Gabby Peitio–a young woman who was killed by her fiance Brian Laundie, who later killed himself–Julia and Michael both explore how a seemingly normal relationship between young people can go terribly wrong. And they do so while depicting how this relationship–as well as others Gabby had with friends and family–are intermediated by social media and influencer culture.    Hidden Gems: Becoming Led Zeppelin Into the Fire   Follow: @topdocspod on Instagram and X    The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Investigative journalists — Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — broke major news this past Tuesday with the announcement that Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller has been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at his father's church, Cathedral Baptist Church (formerly All Nations Church), in 1998 and again sexually assaulting her in 2023.  The lawsuit was filed by Jane Doe No. 1 against John-Paul Miller, Reginald Wayne Miller, and their churches, including Solid Rock Ministries. Mandy and Liz share details of the lawsuit while connecting the dots on what was happening in JP's life at the time.  Plus, they sit for an interview with Rock Hill attorney Randy Hood of McGowan, Hood, Felder and Phillips law firm, who is representing Jane, to learn more about Jane's case and what the world of litigating institutional child sexual abuse looks like. Hood is no stranger to suing churches on behalf of sexual assault victims. He also represents clients in the case against Morningstar Fellowship Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina.  On Tuesday, Mandy and Liz also broke the very important news that attorney Mark Tinsley from the Murdaugh Murders trial — aka Zero Dark Tinsley and Tiger Tinsley — is also representing Jane in her case against the Millers.  Also on the show, JP Miller appeared in Magistrate Court on Wednesday for a hearing related to seven of his cases against protesters and … well, he did a terrible job, as expected… The premium extended episode includes a play-by-play featuring the most pertinent highlights.  Special thanks to Ben from Artistic Eye Productions based in Summerville, SC for covering the Magistrate Court Proceedings  Let's dive in...

It's FOIA around and find out time again on True Sunlight Podcast! True Sunlight Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell unpack the latest round of records reporter Beth Braden received from Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill's emails. The ongoing saga surrounding Alex Murdaugh's trial has taken another dramatic turn with the spotlight now on Becky Hill, the clerk of court. Accusations of jury tampering and improper use of office funds have raised serious questions about her conduct and its potential impact on the trial's outcome. Psychologist John Delatorre joined Tony Brueski on the "Hidden Killers" podcast to dissect these developments and their implications.    The conversation begins with a critical question: "Has Becky Hill's behavior jeopardized the integrity of the Alex Murdaugh trial?" This question sets the stage for an in-depth analysis of Hill's actions and their potential consequences.    Brueski outlines the accusations against Hill, including the misuse of federal child support funds for personal bonuses and possible jury tampering. Delatorre weighs in, expressing skepticism about the likelihood of Murdaugh's conviction being overturned. "It's really hard to get a verdict vacated and remanded back to court," he notes, highlighting the challenges of proving jury tampering.    The discussion shifts to Hill's motivations, particularly her decision to write a book about the case. Delatorre questions the wisdom of this move, given the scrutiny it has brought upon her actions. "All of this stuff is now being uncovered. What do you think is going to happen once you get the attention that you're so wanting?" he asks, pointing out the risks of seeking the spotlight.    Brueski and Delatorre also explore the broader implications of Hill's actions on the legal system. They discuss the potential for a new trial if evidence of jury tampering is proven, but Delatorre remains doubtful. "Even if she did sink it, and it was vacated and remanded back to court for another trial, I still think that he's going to be found guilty," he asserts.    The conversation takes a turn to the realm of popular culture, with Delatorre comparing the unfolding events to a spinoff series. "This is the Better Call Saul of the Breaking Bad that was the Murdaugh trial," he quips, highlighting the dramatic and unexpected twists in the case.    As the episode concludes, Brueski and Delatorre leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "In the complex web of legal and ethical issues surrounding the Alex Murdaugh trial, can justice prevail, or will the actions of key figures like Becky Hill cast a lasting shadow over the case's outcome?" This question encapsulates the uncertainty and intrigue surrounding a case that continues to captivate and confound observers. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, hosts Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke delve into the unfolding legal drama surrounding Alex Murdaugh, a figure entangled in a web of legal controversies. As Murdoch's second murder trial approaches, the hosts discuss the latest developments, including allegations against Becky Hill, a key figure in the case.    Brueski opens the discussion with a pointed question: "As we get closer to Alex Murdaugh's second murder trial, are we witnessing a clear path being paved for his defense?" This question sets the stage for a deep dive into the complexities of the case, with Dreeke providing expert insights from his extensive experience in law enforcement.    The hosts discuss the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's (SLED) active investigations into Becky Hill, focusing on allegations of jury tampering and the misuse of office. The allegations include improper use of federal child support funds for personal bonuses, raising serious questions about Hill's credibility. "There is a lot of impropriety allegations that are floating here for someone who really needs credibility," Brueski notes, highlighting the potential impact on Murdoch's trial.    Dreeke, drawing on his FBI background, reflects on the importance of adhering to rules, regulations, and procedures to prevent such situations. He expresses his non-surprise at the developments, given the number of problematic data points emerging in the case. "Every time something like this pops up, I'm reminded of all the rules, regulations, process, and procedures that are in place to keep things like this from happening," he says.    A significant point of discussion is Hill's decision to self-publish a book related to the case. Dreeke contrasts this with his own experience of publishing books while in the FBI, emphasizing the rigorous pre-publication review process he underwent. "How was it that she was able to get that book out so fast?" Dreeke wonders, questioning the lack of oversight in Hill's publishing process.    Brueski and Dreeke also touch on the financial aspects of self-publishing, debunking the notion that it leads to significant financial gain. They speculate on Hill's motivations and the potential consequences of her actions, both professionally and legally. "You're sitting at the end of the day saying you've blown your life on nothing," Brueski remarks, reflecting on the risks Hill took.    The hosts conclude by pondering the broader implications of Hill's actions and the potential impact on Murdoch's upcoming trial. They question whether Hill's decisions were made in isolation or if they are indicative of a pattern of behavior that could have influenced other cases she was involved in.    As the episode wraps up, Brueski and Dreeke leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "Will the legal missteps and improprieties surrounding key figures in Alex Murdaugh's case influence the outcome of his second murder trial, or are they merely distractions from the central issues at hand?" State investigators have found evidence linking a Colleton County government wiretapping scandal involving Jeffrey Hill to a public ethics complaint against his mother, the county's elected clerk of court, Becky Hill.In this episode, former S.C. Attorney General Charlie Condon tells hosts Anne Emerson and Drew Tripp how the ethics complaint and attacks on Hill's character might impact a potential retrial for convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh. BACKGROUND: The date of the wiretapping incident involving Jeffrey Hill came in late July 2023, about a month after someone filed an ethics complaint against his mother with the State Ethics Commission.Becky Hill's county-issued cell phone was confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation. A public corruption investigation tied to the wiretapping incident has now been escalated to the S.C. Attorney General's Office. The original ethics complaint against Becky Hill, dated June 2023, alleges that during the Murdaugh murder trial and afterward, she "utilized her authority, the Colleton County Courthouse and taxpayer's money outside the scope of routine court business."In documents dated August 2023 reported by FITSNews, Hill categorically denies many of the allegations made in the original June 26 ethics complaint, and alleges other accusations have been crafted to exclude important context and other details to intentionally make her actions appear nefarious.MORE: Source says Colleton wiretapping & corruption probe linked to court clerk ethics complaintSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I finally look into what all the hype about the Murdaugh family murders is about. And the hype... is justified. I provide a summary of the Murdaugh's history of power and influence in South Carolina's Low Country and how a series of financial crimes and murders led to the collapse of their corrupt rural empire. Alec Murdaugh is a TERRIBLE human being... and I'm so glad that snake will rot in prison for the rest of his life. BAD MAGIC GIVING TREE: Go to Amazon.com and purchase an Amazon gift card if you want to donate. A tenuous sense of finality has spread across the South Carolina Lowcountry like a late November cold front as another chapter in Alex Murdaugh's seemingly unending criminal saga comes to a close. Getting there, the world heard for the first time this week the raw emotional catharsis of several families victimized by Alex Murdaugh's beguiling treachery. Friends, peers and clients alike unleashed years of pent-up anger and disappointment in Murdaugh Tuesday as he was formally sentenced to 27 years in prison for his many frauds, thefts, forgeries and lies. To some, the sentence only serves to further stoke the fire of their anger as it seems to them not nearly enough. Others are simply glad to turn from the last page a dark chapter in their lives — more interested in peace and forgiveness than vengeance. But what would this historic day be without the enigmatic and vexing Murdaugh once again attempting to seize the spotlight away from those owed justice to shine the attention on himself instead?Join host Anne Emerson, legal analyst Charlie Condon and producer Drew Tripp for this jam-packed retrospective on Alex Murdaugh's financial crimes plea deal and sentencing.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The former South Carolina state prosecutor, who comes from a line of prominent attorneys, has been at the center of multiple investigations going back to February of 2019. With what originally appeared as a possible targeted hit on a local lawyers family, quickly spiraled into the twisting case that's come to be dubbed “The Murdaugh Murders”. With bodies piling up, and millions of dollars going “missing” over the years, the family that was once held in the highest regards, has now turned into a shining example of how to quickly fall from grace.   True Crime Guys YouTube   EVERYTHING TRUE CRIME GUYS:   https://linktr.ee/Truecrimeguysproductions   True Crime Guys Music(Including track used in this episode): True Crime Guys Music on Spotify   OhMyGaia.com Code: Creeper     Patreon.com/truecrimeguys Patreon.com/sandupodcast Merch: truecrimeguys.threadless.com     SOURCES:  https://www.vox.com/culture/23287648/alex-murdaugh-murder-accused-wife-son-family https://www.nbcnews.com/news/crime-courts/alex-murdaugh-indicted-murder-charges-summary-timeline-rcna38026 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/south-carolina-attorney-alex-murdaugh-expected-indicted-murder-charges-rcna37862 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/25/us/murdaugh-murder-trial-timeline.html https://abcnews.go.com/US/murdaugh-murders-mysteries-timeline-key-events-south-carolina/story?id=80041546 https://abcnews.go.com/US/key-moments-alex-murdaugh-double-murder-trial/story?id=97566389 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/stephen-smith-death-south-carolina-murdaugh-country-timeline-48-hours/ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12784527/murdaugh-buster-alex-stephen-smith-sandy-smith.html
