Alarming Urban Home Invasion: Venomous Brown Snake in Canberra — Jeremy Zakis — Zakis reported on a concerning home invasion in Canberra involving a highly venomous great eastern brown snake, one of Australia'sdeadliest species. The family discovered the dangerous reptile in their residential hallway; the snake subsequently relocated to the toilet bowl, effectively trapping itself and facilitating safe capture. Experts characterized this unusual urban behavior as potentially symptomatic of snakes seeking cooler refuge as ambient temperatures rise during Australian summer, suggesting climate-driven habitat displacement. 1916 GARDEN OF EDEN

November is a month when communities around the world commemorate the Holodomor–Stalin's genocide famine in Ukraine that, in 1933, starved millions to death, the vast majority of them Ukrainians. Conservative estimates place the death toll at 3.9 million. During the famine, a death certificate listed the cause of death simply as "Ukrainian." In the years leading up to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine today, Vladimir Putin's KGB dictatorship revived the cult of mass-murdering dictator Joseph Stalin–producing propaganda textbooks, putting up Stalin statues, and outlawing acknowledgment of the fact that Stalin helped launch World War II by invading Poland two weeks after Nazi Germany, then holding joint military parades with the Nazis. Stalin monuments and billboards are today in regions of Ukraine under Russian occupation. Back in the early 1930s, as Stalin laid the groundwork for his man-made famine–a diabolically efficient way of killing millions before the invention of the atomic bomb–the New York Times praised his regime. Walter Duranty, the paper's Moscow bureau chief, won a Pulitzer for Soviet propaganda and went on to gaslight readers by insisting, "There is no famine." Challenging the media establishment, political elites, and industry leaders eager to profit from helping Stalin modernize his empire was a young Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones. Idealistic and courageous, he risked his life and career to become a vital independent witness to the genocide. His story is told in the film Mr. Jones and in the award-winning graphic novel In the Shadow of Stalin: The Story of Mr. Jones. The film was developed with support from historical advisors, including Timothy Snyder, whose classic Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin opens with Jones's story. To commemorate the Holodomor this year, we're sharing the audio from a video interview from September 2024 featuring In the Shadow of Stalin: The Story of Mr. Jones, which recently won a Ringo Award for Best Nonfiction and received the honor of being a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection. (You can find the video in the show notes). Andrea Chalupa of Gaslit Nation, the writer/producer of the Mr. Jones film and comic In the Shadow of Stalin, speaks with Anastasia Ulanowicz, an Associate Professor of English at the University of Florida who specializes in comics as a medium for personal and historical memory. If you're looking for a way to help Ukraine, consider purchasing a copy of In the Shadow of Stalin: The Story of Mr. Jones for your local school or library. Hundreds of copies have already been given to members of Congress and sold to raise funds for Razom for Ukraine–Andrea has given away so many copies that she will never see any royalties for this as those books must be paid off to the publisher to cover their costs. When you purchase a book to give away to raise awareness, you're supporting Ukraine, not the author. Any effort to help spread this story is deeply appreciated. For those who haven't seen Mr. Jones, it's available here, and Andrea's short documentary Stalin's Secret Genocide–which screened at the United Nations in 2016 and features Timothy Snyder; Anne Applebaum; Norman Naimark of Stanford, author of Stalin's Genocides; Serhii Plokhii of Harvard, author of The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine; and other leading historians–is available here. Thank you to everyone who continues to raise their voices for Ukraine during the country's existential fight for survival–and for the freedom of the world against Russian fascist lawlessness. Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in Ireland with an estimated 1900 deaths per annum and its the second most common cancer in Ireland for women. While many associate this type of cancer with smokers, one in five diagnosed people have never smoked in their lives. One of these people is Susan Leatham who was diagnosed in 2021 and Susan spoke to Pat this morning along with Helen Forristal, Director of Nursing with the Marie Keating Foundation.
When Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh killing over 1,200 garment workers in April 2013, two Irish engineers found themselves at the centre of literally redefining global worker safety standards. Aidan Madden from Arup and Colm Quinn, now Head of Operations for the International Accord, reveal how they developed "optimal ignorance" methodology assessing 2,500+ factories at unprecedented scale, why poor concrete quality and overdevelopment caused the tragedy, and how training local engineers to think about existing buildings (not blank-sheet designs) represents a universal engineering challenge. From paper-based inspections to iPad workflows managing 140,000 safety findings, discover the technical rigour behind transparent remediation programmes that fundamentally changed how engineers approach ethical practice in global supply chains. THINGS WE SPOKE ABOUTHow Rana Plaza's catastrophic collapse in April 2013 killed over 1,200 people from overdevelopment. Why Arup developed "optimal ignorance" methodology focusing exclusively on critical life-safety elements How the International Accord inspected over 2,000 Bangladesh factories identifying 140,000 individual health and safety findings, with 115,000 subsequently corrected Why training local engineers to assess existing buildings represents a universal engineering problem requiring mindset shifts beyond Asia-specific contextsHow digital workflows transformed paper-based inspections into scalable remediation programmes GUEST DETAILSAidan Madden is a Chartered Civil/Structural Engineer with over twenty years' experience at global firm Arup, leading complex, impactful projects worldwide. Following the catastrophic Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, Aidan became a pivotal member of Arup's leadership team developing and implementing structural safety assessment methodology for the original Bangladesh Accord. This monumental effort required creating standardised yet highly rigorous technical frameworks to rapidly assess structural integrity of over 2,500 garment factories—demanding first-principles engineering judgement at unprecedented speed and scale. His work proved instrumental in identifying and remediating high-risk structural, electrical and fire hazards, effectively codifying ethical engineering practice for an entire global industry. For his extraordinary contribution to safety and social responsibility through engineering, Aidan received the prestigious Engineers Ireland International Engineer of the Year Award.Colm Quinn is Head of Operations for the International Accord, a legally binding agreement focused on securing safe and healthy garment and textile industries worldwide. Leading implementation and operational rollout of Accord programmes across multiple countries including Pakistan expansion, Colm manages technical capacity-building initiatives training local engineers—structural, fire and electrical specialists—on rigorous safety standards necessary for factory inspections and remediation. Bringing strong high-level engineering foundations from previous work as Associate at global engineering firm Arup, Colm's career trajectory represents the crucial shift from developing pioneering safety frameworks to successfully scaling and sustaining them across global industries. His operational leadership ensures that technical rigour developed in Bangladesh translates effectively to new markets whilst empowering local engineering teams.Connect with the guests:Aidan Madden LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/aidan-madden-91ab3a23Colm Quinn LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/colm-g-quinnInternational Accord: internationalaccord.orgArup: arup.comMORE INFORMATIONLooking for ways to explore or advance a career in the field of engineering? So it had been overdeveloped. They had put on additional floors beyond what it had been designed for. You have a building which is heavier than it's supposed to be, and with concrete which is weaker than it should have been. - Aidan MaddenThere's kind of a bit of an art and a bit of science to this. We need to spend the time that we need to do the assessment, but we have to be able to do it at scale. A colleague of mine had a great phrase which we reused today: optimal ignorance. It's like, what do you really, really need to know to allow you to define the actions, to define the meaningful things that will happen after your visit to make those buildings safer. - Aidan MaddenThe programme is quite unique in that it's dealing with existing buildings. There's no code that I know where existing buildings are front and foremost. This is a problem not just in Asia. Engineers need to be retrained or refocused to deal with existing buildings. It's not a Bangladesh problem. It's not a Pakistan problem, it's an engineering problem - Colm QuinnThe Accord, combined with the RSC in Bangladesh, inspected over 2,000 factories and have identified over 140,000 individual health and safety findings, and of those, over 115,000 have been corrected. - Colm QuinnKEYWORDS#RanaPlaza #workersafety #InternationalAccord #structuralengineering #ethicalengineering
A farmer's bloody revenge left seven women hanging from the hills of Nebraska—and over a century later, their screams still echo through the darkness while cars mysteriously stall and glowing red eyes watch from the shadows of Seven Sisters Road.IN THIS EPISODE: There are many legends from Nebraska involving supernatural entities, but one of the eerier accounts out there is the story of Nebraska's haunted “L Street”. According to legend, seven women were murdered on the road in the 1900s. Ever since, the road and surrounding hills have been a rumored hotbed of paranormal activity. It's labeled as "L Street" on the map – but locals call it “Seven Sisters Road. It's definitely a restaurant you'll want to visit again when you pass that way again. Unfortunately, the restaurant won't be there… because it never was. (The Restaurant That Disappeared) *** They say chivalry is dead, but that was not so in 1875. Standing up to someone on behalf of your wife was not only common, but expected… even to the point of murder. (Tragedy At Vineland) *** Hawaii's MacKenzie State Park boasts beautiful scenery, pleasant weather for outdoor activities like hiking and fishing, and is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. Barney Riggs was one of the Old West's most notorious and controversial gunfighters. Born in Arkansas in 1856, Riggs moved to Texas as a child, where violence quickly became a family tradition. At just 18, he killed a friend in what was called an accidental shooting. By his twenties, Riggs was in Arizona, working as a cowboy, stealing horses, and allegedly committing multiple murders. After being convicted of murder and sentenced to life at Yuma Prison, Riggs won a full pardon by saving the warden's life during a bloody escape attempt. He returned to Texas, where he continued his violent ways, becoming embroiled in the infamous Frazer-Miller feud and serving as a deputy under a controversial sheriff. Repeated arrests, deadly shootouts, and family drama followed Riggs until his tragic demise in 1902. It was such a rookie mistake. I was tramping in the Kahurangi, last summer. The Douglas Range, 1000m above sea level. And after we'd pitched a tent, as the sun got heavy and the surrounding hills cast their shadows long and deep, I realised I'd screwed up, big time. Zzzzzz. Zzzzzz. Zzzzzz. What made the error so much worse was that it wasn't a bit of absent-minded forgetfulness. I'd carefully considered my options before loading my pack. It wasn't that I'd forgotten to bring long johns or pants. It's that I'd *chosen* not to pack them. Up top I had a poly-prop, jumper and jacket. But down bottom I had shorts… and that was it. Zzzzz. Zzzzzzzz. The only way to keep sandflies from biting is to keep moving. And the last thing you feel like doing after 8 or 10 hours of steady climbing… is keep moving. As if to wallow in my own stupidity, I ended up treading a middle ground. Moving just enough so as not to rest, but not enough to stop the sandflies from completely devouring me. Still, I've had worse experiences with them. I'll not forget my night at the mouth of the Heaphy River, where the swarms were so thick they hung in the skies like pockets of buzzing black smoke. Walking by, you had to make sure to close your mouth so as not to catch a bit of extra protein. And you know what? I'd still take a sandfly over a biting gnat. I once chose to visit one of Utah's national parks on a Sunday in the middle of biting gnat season. The locals call them ‘moose flies' which I suppose could be cos' they hang around moose, or just as feasibly in my experience because the gnats are a comparable size. It wasn't just the itching that killed me, though. My bare legs were soon covered in blood. I returned to Salt Lake City to discover every pharmacy closed for the rest of the weekend and spent the night lying in a tepid bath, trying to stave off shock. Often it's the obvious downside to natural beauty. If it's a beautiful natural landscape… there will be something that'll give you an itchy bite. At least there's one place on Earth you could still safely wear shorts. Sure, you might be a bit nippy striding down the streets of Reykjavik in your stubbies, but at the very least you could be sure there were no sandflies. There were no biting gnats. No midges. No moose flies. No mozzies. That was at least, until this week. Scientists have confirmed that for the first time, the World's deadliest creature has reached the last country on Earth. Iceland officially has mosquitoes. And while sure, Iceland is not the Amazon. They're not at risk of a Dengue Fever outbreak, You can still safely leave the Deet at home. The truth is that the discover probably represents more than just an ecological quirk. At an individual level, sure, it's a potential nuisance. But what confirming mosquitoes in Iceland says about the state of the planet is probably far more serious. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beloved, the world's deadliest drug mocks nations, ruins homes, and destroys souls. But the Spirit of God still transforms lives. The same Jesus who turned water into wine at Cana can turn sinners into saints today. He can cleanse, restore, and renew. "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Don't be deceived — be delivered. Don't be drunk — be filled. Don't be mocked — be marked as God's child.

When the Russian schooner Demeter drifted into Whitby harbor with its dead captain lashed to the wheel and its entire crew missing, the ship's log revealed a horrifying truth: something ancient and evil had been hunting them one by one across the dark waters. The final entries, written in the captain's trembling hand, chronicle the crew's descent from unease to terror as they realize their cargo of fifty earth-filled boxes conceals a predator that feeds in the night and cannot be killed.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveySOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…BOOK: “The Last Voyage of Demeter” by Bram Stoker: https://amzn.to/3KZnJ0zBOOK: “Dracula” (full novel) by Bram Stoker: https://amzn.to/44sXcj4=====(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In this episode, I sit down with fellow Vermonter and all-around woodsman, Jeremy Ballantine. Jeremy is one of those rare hunters who has mastered both the art of bowhunting and the tough, old-school craft of tracking deer in the big woods. Humble as they come, Jeremy's success speaks for itself—whether it's taking mature bucks here in the Northeast or chasing bull elk out West with a bow in hand.We dive into his approach to hunting, some stories from the mountains and the plains, and the mindset it takes to consistently find success in different parts of the country. It was a genuine, down-to-earth conversation with one of the most skilled hunters I've had the chance to talk with.
On May 18th, 1927, a quiet Michigan farming town was torn apart when school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe wired a local school with dynamite, murdering 45 people—including 38 children—in the deadliest act of school violence in U.S. history. In the 1980's and 1990's, America's biggest outlaw motorcycle gangs were looking to expand all over Europe. Unfortunately, they set their sites on the same countries, and they weren't keen on sharing territory. The Great Nordic Biker War erupted in the 1990s as the Hells Angels and Bandidos clashed for control of drug routes and territory across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. What began as turf disputes escalated into bombings, shootings, and even attacks with anti-tank weapons o, shocking a population that never expected their streets to resemble war zones.
