This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading back into the blood-soaked, Rage-infected streets of post-apocalyptic Britain with 28 Weeks Later — the 2007 zombie horror sequel to Danny Boyle's groundbreaking 28 Days Later. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later builds on the legacy of 28 Days Later (which we covered in episode 43), expanding the world of the Rage Virus and the aftermath of a collapsed society. While Danny Boyle didn't direct this time around — due to commitments on Sunshine — he stayed on as executive producer and even directed key sequences himself, including the ferocious opening scene. The original creators — Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter Alex Garland — initially considered a direct sequel called 29 Days Later, potentially continuing the story of Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris's characters. Instead, they pivoted to a broader, bleaker vision: an infected London under military quarantine, a supposed victory against the virus, and the inevitable resurgence of horror. Set weeks after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later follows the failed attempt to repopulate a ‘safe zone' in London, guarded by the US Army. As expected in a British zombie film, things go catastrophically wrong. Filming took place in iconic London locations, including Canary Wharf and 3 Mills Studios. A sequence planned for Wembley Stadium had to be shot in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium instead. The film's viral marketing campaign — quite literally — included a huge biohazard warning projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover. The Rage Virus was back. Opening in 2007, 28 Weeks Later landed in over 2,000 US cinemas and took nearly $10 million on its opening weekend. It didn't match the cultural impact of 28 Days Later, but it cemented the franchise as a landmark of modern British horror — helping shape the next wave of post-apocalyptic zombie cinema.28 Weeks Later features a fresh cast, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba, and a young Imogen Poots. While none of the original characters return, the film builds on the terrifying groundwork Boyle and Garland laid in 28 Days Later — exploring themes of infection, trust, trauma, and institutional failure. The trilogy-that-never-was stalled with 28 Months Later, which entered development hell. But a proper sequel, 28 Years Later, has finally been greenlit, with Danny Boyle returning to direct and Cillian Murphy on board as producer. The Rage Virus isn't done with us yet. If you're searching for podcasts about 28 Weeks Later, 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle, zombie movies, the Rage Virus, post-apocalyptic horror, or modern British horror cinema — you've found the right episode. Expect discussion of British zombie films, Rage-infected lore, military horror, abandoned London, and whether 28 Weeks Later holds up next to its predecessor.

A quick aside before we dive in: The Eaton and Palisades Fires are far from through. If you can offer support to those displaced and impacted by the fires, it would mean so much to us at Holisticism. I owed you an update — in June 2024 I recorded an episode about my Hermit Experiment, in which I decided to lean ALL THE WAY into my Matrix of Destiny Complex Karma number (9, The Hermit) for six months. Well, the witch is back. And I'm updating you on the good, the bad, the girl-so-confusing of this Complex Karma exploration. Key developments in my villain-to-crunchy-recluse arc:* Stopped teaching huge public courses until 2025 (terrifying but surprisingly didn't tank revenue???)* Went DEEP with 1:1 client work (the vibes? immaculate. If you're one of my clients and you're reading this now please know how obsessed with you I am)* Started making truly awful pottery at midnight… like a proper forest witch * Published a book about copywriting that didn't flop * Generally tried to embrace more BTS energy and less "available on The Internet 24/7" energyThere were plot twists nobody saw coming, which you'll have to listen to the episode to hear more about. This is either proof that the hermit archetype knows what she's doing, or that the universe rewards you when you finally stop pretending you want to be an extrovert. Real talk though — part of this hermit exploration came from a pretty raw place. I wasn't sure how it was gonna go… for a minute, I even wondered if I was making a rash decision in response to some tough stuff that was happening in my personal life. Was I leaning too much into “magical thinking” acting on a hunch about this whole Hermit thing, or was I following the clues… Would I recommend experimenting with your Complex Karma number? Absolutely. Will it solve all your problems? Absolutely not. But it might help you realize you don't actually have to teach another Notion course if you don't want to. And isn't that worth something?

It's that bizarre moment when an object you know you left in a particular place suddenly vanishes without a trace, only to reappear in the exact same spot later as if it had never left. Some dismiss these events as simple absent-mindedness, while others believe there may be something more mysterious at play, perhaps even a glitch in reality itself. Following is part 2 of our interview with Revka Stearns, who joined us on Off the Record to provide an update of her first eight months on the job as a new inpatient coder. If you haven't listened to part 1 I'd recommend starting there, since we pick up mid-conversation. On this show we cover: The mechanics of working as a remote coder. Workplace setup and helpful recommendations Dealing with the physical challenges of working at a desk all day and breaking up the routine Unexpected consulting work coming her way ... from Canada! Unfiltered conversation about social media. Revka's take on the social media landscape, dealing with negativity, dispelling persistent myths (there's no coding jobs! It's all being outsourced! Yes there are, and not it isn't—Revka is proof), and being a consistent, positive, and helpful online presence. Keeping sane through work-life balance, and her latest Off the Record Spotify playlist entry
Melissa Nowicki's 3 year old son Brock was diagnosed with a Pediatric Brain cancer known as CIC-DUX4 Fusion Sarcoma in April of 2023. Both his surgery to remove his tumor and his follow up scans were perfect as 100 percent of his tumor was removed and there was no spreading of his disease. Brock is now 4 years old, was honored by the New England Revolution Professional Soccer team at Cancer Awareness Night on September 28th, and is doing well health wise.
Back in January I hosted newly minted medical coder Revka Stearns. For someone so new to the industry, Revka has made a big impact by the act of sharing--documenting her journey in detailed and open fashion on LinkedIn and Facebook, and a half dozen podcasts and programs. At the time she was on the show Revka had literally been on her first job for about 3 weeks. Eight months later I asked her to come back for an update and share her successes, challenges, and unexpected side-ventures. Revka has many strengths—smart, hardworking, diligent--but one of them is effective use of social media, creating a model for how I like to see these platforms used (and unfortunately often aren't). But she's also had her share of struggles. Coding is hard. This was a bit of a longer interview so I split it into two parts. On part 1 we cover: Eight months on the job as a first-time medical coder Specific challenges she's encountered, including: Making sure the organism causing an infection is clearly linked to that infection through documentation Ensuring documentation is carried through to discharge, beyond the provider just copying and pasting Recognizing query opportunities The reality of learning: Taking one step forward and two steps back Most rewarding aspects of the job What she knows now that she wished she knew back in January

Heather Roy's 10 year old daughter had just completed a 10 K road race and was seemingly very healthy in September of 2018 except for a nagging pain in her right side that would not go away. This pain, thought to possibly be appendicitis, turned out to be Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma, which was diagnosed at a much older age than this form of pediatric cancer is normally diagnosed. Evelyn struggled for 18 months with this disease before passing away in February of 2020.
A young man calls the police around 3:30 am to report that he had just been physically assaulted by his ex-girlfriend. Officers are dispatched and the caller greets them with a few red scratches on his face. He had gone over to his ex-girlfriend's apartment to break up with her—but that's when she went crazy; scratching his face and twisting his arm. The officers ask the man for her name. Goo Hara. A K-pop idol from the girl group KARA. When the police begin investigating, the man's story begins to fall apart. If what he's saying is true, why is there CCTV footage of Goo Hara on her knees—seemingly begging the young man? Why did he email Dispatch, a Korean tabloid, twice during this so-called ‘one sided assault?' And what does all of this have to do with Burning Sun? A couple of months pass, and Goo Hara helps reporters blow the lid off the Burning Sun case. Not even a year later, she is found dead. This is part two of Burning Sun. For the second year in a row, medical school graduates across specialties are shying away from applying for residency training in states with abortion bans or significant restrictions, according to a new study. Meanwhile, Medicare's trustees report that the program will be able to pay its bills longer than expected — which could discourage Congress from acting to address the program's long-term financial woes. Lauren Weber of The Washington Post, Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins University schools of nursing and public health and Politico Magazine, and Anna Edney of Bloomberg News join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more. Plus, for “extra credit,” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: The Nation's “The Abortion Pill Underground,” by Amy Littlefield. Joanne Kenen: The New York Times' “In Medicine, the Morally Unthinkable Too Easily Comes to Seem Normal,” by Carl Elliott. Anna Edney: ProPublica's “Facing Unchecked Syphilis Outbreak, Great Plains Tribes Sought Federal Help. Months Later, No One Has Responded,” by Anna Maria Barry-Jester. Lauren Weber: Stat's “NYU Professors Who Defended Vaping Didn't Disclose Ties to Juul, Documents Show,” by Nicholas Florko. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
