Should Meta have been forced to sell Giphy?

Last week, Meta lost its appeal to overturn the Competition and Market Authority's order that it sell Giphy. While the CMA's order that Meta's acquisition of Giphy damaged competition has been retained, it has raised debates over how much power should be afforded to the regulator. To discuss this, Victoria Hewson, IEA Head of Regulator Affairs, is joined by a panel of competition law experts. The panel includes Aurelien Portuese, Director of the Schumpeter Project at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Iain Murray, Vice President of the Competitive Enterprise Institute and Cento Veljanovski, Managing Director at Case Associates and IEA Academic Fellow. Aurelien contributed to the IEA's 'Meaning of Competition in the Digital Age' paper, which can be read for free here: https://iea.org.uk/media/over-regulat...    FOLLOW US: TWITTER - https://twitter.com/iealondon  INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/ieauk/  FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/ieauk  WEBSITE - https://iea.org.uk/

Is English football broken? Should government try to fix it? And are any of the proposals in the Fan-Led Review of Football proportionate or necessary? At this lively and fascinating debate, former Crystal Palace Chairman Simon Jordan and Member of Parliament Damian Collins join the IEA's Victoria Hewson and Professor Len Shackleton to discuss the Crouch Review, the risks, and whether it's time English Football was overseen by an "independent regulator".  Simon is a serial entrepreneur, who had run a vast array of successful business across several industries. In 2000 he purchased Crystal Palace Football Club and remained chairman of the club for over a decade. He is currently a TalkSPORT co-presenter.   Damian is Member of Parliament for Folkstone and Hythe, and was formerly Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.  Victoria Hewson is Head of Regulatory Affairs at the IEA. Len Shackleton is an IEA Fellow and Professor of Economics at the University of Buckingham. The European Union has set out its proposals to change the Northern Ireland Protocol after the Brexit Minister, Lord Frost, announced in Lisbon earlier this week that the UK will trigger Article 16 if changes to the agreement are not made. The protocol was designed to prevent checks along the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, following Brexit. But since it came into force at the start of 2021, it has prompted disagreements between the UK and EU because it has disrupted trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. IEA Communications and Marketing Assistant, Kieran Neild Ali, sat down with Victoria Hewson, who is Head of Regulatory Affairs at the IEA, to discuss the Northern Ireland Protocol. They discussed the origins of the Northern Ireland Protocol, the constitutional and economic problems with the agreement and what the future holds for UK-EU relations. The Northern Ireland Protocol is a protocol of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement that covers the special situation in the island of Ireland. Its terms were negotiated in 2019 and concluded in December 2020. The Protocol has been a thorn in the side of UK-EU relations ever since the UK left the transition period and entered a new trading relationship with the EU on 31st December 2020. Trade disruption between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and threats of invoking Article 16 of the Protocol by the EU over Covid vaccine supplies have soured relations and brought the protocol under scrutiny on both sides of the channel. Syed Kamall, Acting Academic and Research Director at the Institute of Economic Affairs, sits down with Victoria Hewson, IEA Head of Regulatory Affairs, and journalist Owen Polley to explain the Protocol and discuss its implications.

Clash of the IEA Titans: Christopher Snowdon and Victoria Hewson discuss lockdown-sceptic scepticism and easing the restrictions in a lively debate hosted by our Head of Political Economy Dr Kristian Niemietz.Christopher is Head of Lifestyle Economics at the IEA, and recently said in a piece for Quillette that he reluctantly supports a third lockdown, arguing that “The logic behind lockdowns is difficult to refute. If you reduce human interaction, you will reduce the virus’s ability to spread”. Christopher acknowledges that “The economy is battered beyond belief” but he “doesn’t think it is necessarily a bad idea to prevent tens of thousands of people dying this winter from a disease for which we now have multiple vaccines.”In the opposite corner we have Victoria, IEA Head of Regulatory Affairs. Victoria has argued that Lockdown sceptics will be crucial in the fight to regain freedom. In an article for the Critic, Victoria suggests that many of the government’s measures have been enacted with “minimal parliamentary scrutiny” and have incurred an “incalculable cost to mental health and wellbeing, and to democratic norms and civil liberties”. Victoria’s view is that lockdown sceptics haven’t had a discernible impact on government policy or public compliance.Read Christopher’s article here and Victoria’s here.

Surveillance and Safeguards: Questions about contact tracing

With Britain in lockdown, the government has been racing to find ways to ease restrictions without putting public safety at risk. One solution is a contact-tracing app that can enable digital contact-tracing on a large scale using bluetooth. One such app is under development by NHSX with researchers from Oxford University. Though tech giants Apple and Google announced they would tweak their smartphone operating systems to help digital contact-tracing, the UK is an outlier in rejecting this approach. Is Britain sleepwalking into another coronavirus blunder by failing to listen to global consensus and expert analysis with the release of this app? Does NHSX, as IEA Head of Lifestyle Economics Christopher Snowdon has suggested, have all the hallmarks of another government IT fiasco?  Emma Revell, IEA Head of Communications, is joined by Victoria Hewson, Head of Regulatory Affairs at the Institute of Economic Affairs, and Jim Killock, Executive Director of Open Rights Group. When it comes to environmental problems in general and global warming in particular, the general consensus is that ‘something must be done’. Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion have become sensations. But what is worrying about this phenomenon is that the more detached from critical reason their arguments become the more they are acclaimed. Greta, for example, began by arguing that those who put forward alternative views were liars and asserted that she had a special gift for being able to tell when people were lying. Her recent speech at the UN Climate Summit was simply a series of assertions. Extinction Rebellion seems to be strongly linked to far-left political movements. The left often argues that climate change cannot be solved by markets. And aren’t hasty, to be honest about the trade-offs involved. The IEA's Digital Manager, Darren Grimes, asked the IEA’s Victoria Hewson, Head of Regulatory Affairs, and the IEA's Head of Political Economy, Dr Kristian Niemietz, to join him and discuss the trade-offs and challenges of adopting such a radical carbon-neutral prescription.
