The recent National Conservatism conference in Britain brought together an array of politicians, journalists, and academics of varying stripes of conservatism, but united by their hostility to so-called woke politics. I spoke to Aurelien Mondon about his recent article in Jacobin, Right-Wing Grifters Love to Say They're “Canceled” — but Get All the Elite Support They Want, in which Aurelien provided ten rules for making a successful career in the anti-woke grift. We talked about some of those rules, and the extent to which liberal media outlets that have provided platforms for the Matt Goodwins and Jordan Pertersons of this world might now be regretting doing so. We also talked about the extent to which the 'war on woke' is a rehashing of traditional conservative themes, and Aurelian addressed the claim that, in spite of being sometimes poorly paid and living in rented accommodation, left wing academics and cultural producers can plausibly be described as being part of a 'New Elite' that dominates our politics.

Aurélien Sanchez is a French runner and backpacker who has taken the running world by storm with his impressive achievements. Just a few months ago we had him on to talk about his record-setting self-supported FKT on the John Muir Trail. But, a couple of weeks ago, imagine our surprise when we got the news that Aurélien had just crossed the finish line in first place ahead of only two other finishers at the 2023 Barkley Marathons, widely considered one of the toughest ultramarathons in the world, if not THE toughest Marathon in the world. He completed the 100-mile race in a time of 58 hours, 23 minutes, and 12 seconds, cementing his status as one of the top ultrarunners in the world. This episode presents our first ever producer on from the northern Rhône – Aurelien Chirat from Vignobles Chirat. Photo: Aurelien Chirat. Credit: WFNP Located in the steep terraced slopes overlooking the Rhone, in the village of Saint Michel sur Rhône, Vignobles Chirat began in 1925 when Benoit Chirat harvested his first Syrah at the Domaine. In 1948, his son George joined and worked with Benoit until 1970. Viognier was planted on their site in Condrieu in 1980 and the real changes to the domaine happened when, in 1984, Gilbert Chirat took over the domain. Within 6 years of his taking the reins, he stopped all the polyculture on the estate and focused only on Syrah and Viognier.   The family moved from focusing on Condrieu, to the wines of Saint Joseph, and then added Côte Rôtie. Aurelien Chirat joined his father in 2012, after completing his studies and working in New Zealand, Burgundy and the south of France. We welcome Aurelien, who I had the pleasure of meeting and spending a lot of time with last year, at the Domaine, learning, and discovering all sorts of things about the northern Rhone I didn't know.   As always, we discuss, land, winemaking, history, and tradition. This four-part Netflix investigative docuseries tells the story of multi-millionaire Gunther VI, who lives in the lap of luxury: He travels on private planes, eats gold-flaked steaks for dinner, and surrounds himself with a glamorous entourage of spokesmodels and entertainers. Also, Gunther VI is a dog - a German shepherd. Gunther's great-grandfather was originally owned by a mysterious countess whose son died tragically. Having no heirs, the countess bequeathed her considerable fortune to her beloved dog, and placed him in the care of her son's close friend, an Italian pharmaceutical heir and aspiring impresario named Maurizio Mian. Over the past 30 years, Mian has built an empire on behalf of his boss (a canine), including glamorous real estate purchases (including Madonna's home in Miami), controversial social experiments including a band, and one of the biggest tax fraud schemes of all time all under the umbrella of Gunther's empire. It is a bizarre and unthinkable story, and naturally – obviously, questions abound.
