Most schools are collaborating. But very few are collaborating in a way that systematically elevates instruction for every teacher and every student. In this episode, guest Kurtis Hewson breaks down the Collaborative Team Meeting (CTM)—a deceptively simple structure that becomes the engine of a school's entire support system. You'll learn how CTMs sit inside a larger four-layer collaboration model, why focusing on "yellow" students (not red) is a game-changer, and how a tight, repeatable meeting structure builds collective efficacy, distributive coaching, and real instructional growth. If you've ever felt like your school is "playing whack-a-mole" with student needs or drowning in meetings about individual students, this episode offers a practical, proven alternative. What You'll Learn The four layers of collaboration every school needs Why adding one meeting can actually reduce meetings overall The critical mindset shift: tier the supports, not the kids Why CTMs focus on yellow students (and how that prevents future red) The pre-work, norms, roles, and timing that make CTMs effective How celebrations turn into organic strategy sharing The Key Issue protocol that keeps conversations about practice, not personalities How CTMs create distributive coaching across a staff The biggest mistake schools make when trying to collaborate Timestamps 00:00 Why CTMs are different from typical collaboration 02:30 The four layers of collaboration explained 06:45 Kurtis's "every child deserves a team" vision 09:00 Three mindset shifts schools must make 14:00 What happens before a CTM starts (pre-work & norms) 18:00 Why celebrations matter more than you think 20:30 The Key Issue protocol explained 24:30 How teachers commit to trying new strategies 26:30 Distributive coaching and capacity building 29:30 The biggest challenge: sticking to the structure 33:30 The free CTM Starter Kit and new book announcement Get Your Episode Freebie & More Resources On My Website: https://www.lindsaybethlyons.com/blog/259 Connect with guest Kurtis Hewson Website: jigsawlearning.ca

This episode draws on experimental and review literature on mirror-gazing, strange-face illusions, anomalous self-experience, dissociation, agency, face pareidolia, and face-distortion disorders, especially the work of Giovanni B. Caputo, Caputo/Lynn/Houran, Mash et al., Bregman-Hai and Soffer-Dudek, Derome et al., Palmer and Clifford, and Blom et al. Historical and occult context comes from research on catoptromancy, John Dee's angelic scrying records, the British Museum's “Dr Dee's Magical Mirror,” Campbell et al.'s Antiquity study on the mirror's Mexican/Aztec obsidian origin, and Mesoamerican material on Tezcatlipoca and the “Smoking Mirror.”Links For The Occult Rejectshttps://linktr.ee/theoccultrejectsOccult Research Institutehttps://www.occultresearchinstitute.org/Cash Apphttps://cash.app/$theoccultrejectsVenmo@TheOccultRejectsBuy Me A Coffeebuymeacoffee.com/TheOccultRejectsPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/TheOccultRejectsCore Scientific Sources: Mirror-Gazing, Strange Faces, and Altered Self-ExperienceCaputo, Giovanni B. “Strange-Face-in-the-Mirror Illusion.” Perception 39, no. 7, 2010, 1007–1008.Key use: This is the main science anchor for the episode. Most schools say they “collaborate.” They hold team meetings. They talk about students. They review data. But without clear infrastructure, those meetings become updates instead of decision-making engines, and multi-tiered systems of support become an extra burden for educators. In this episode, I interview Kurtis Hewson from Jigsaw Learning to break down their Collaborative Response Team meeting format and explain why effective collaboration requires structure and not just good intentions. From who is in the room to how documents are used before, during, and after the meeting, they share the operational backbone that makes collaboration actually move student outcomes.Kurtis Hewson is an award-winning former administrator and teacher, as well as post-secondary teaching faculty. He is the co-founder of Jigsaw Learning and co-author of Collaborative Response: Three Foundational Components That Transform How We Respond to the Needs of Learners (Corwin, 2022). Kurtis works with districts and schools nationally and internationally to establish Collaborative Response frameworks and interacts with thousands of educators each year.If you care about MTSS, intervention systems, or building-level leadership, this episode will shift how you think about team meetings and collaboration. In this interview, we discuss: ✅ Why the Collaborative Team Meeting framework helps educators move from between “talking about students” to making strategic, forward progress that changes school-wide practice✅ How structured documents before, during, and after meetings create clarity and accountability and psychological safety✅ How to capture action items in real time and encourage innovative thinking✅ Why the Collaborative Team Meeting requires specific roles, and how these roles determine whether a meeting moves forward or feels like busyworkIf you're leading multi-tiered supports in K–12 education or trying to strengthen how your teams collaborate, this episode offers practical insight into building the infrastructure that makes collaboration sustainable, focused, and impactful. You can learn more about the Collaborative Response Framework free resources here: https://www.jigsawlearning.ca/freeRead about the Overview of Collaborative Response here: https://bit.ly/CR-overview Read the Introductory Chapter of the text Collaborative Response – https://bit.ly/CR-introGet the Collaborative Team Meeting Starter Kit here: https://www.jigsawlearningonline.com/ctm-starter-kit-podcastLearn about the Layers of Collaborative Teams Here: https://www.jigsawlearning.ca/publications/blog-posts/scaffolding-our-collaborative-response-purposeful-layering-tLearn the Five Considerations to Transform Your Team Meetings here: https://www.jigsawlearningonline.com/five-planning-considerations-to-transform-your-team-meetingsIn this episode, I mentioned Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that gives speech pathologists a scalable framework for building language skills needed to thrive in school, social situations, and daily life. From Trauma to Triumph: How to Heal Cancer & Anxiety Using Gut Health & Nervous System Reset Dr. Jen Hewson wasn't always a doctor of natural medicine. She was a high-functioning education administrator making six figures, looking fit on the outside, and falling apart on the inside. At 43, a cancer diagnosis became her wake-up call to stop pushing through and start listening. In this conversation with Rocky Lalvani, Dr. Hewson shares how healing your body, regulating your nervous system, and reconnecting with something bigger than yourself can transform not just your health, but your entire approach to life and leadership. Key Learning Insights Your body is always communicating. 90 percent of your health challenges come from what you're refusing to feel, not what you don't know. The body sends breadcrumbs of intuition first. If you ignore them, it sends a boulder. Dr. Hewson's cancer diagnosis was her boulder, the breaking point that finally forced her to listen. 90 percent of your health is rooted in gut health, and gut health affects everything else. Your gut is your first brain. When your gut is dysbiotic and leaky, your body is in survival mode. It can't properly regulate hormones, produce the right neurotransmitters, or support emotional and mental wellbeing. Healing starts here, always. Cortisol doesn't distinguish between a real threat and a mental loop of "what if." Your nervous system treats chronic stress the same way it treats a bear chasing you. This constant activation contracts your blood vessels, dysregulates your heart, and keeps you in a state of dis-ease. A simple two to three minute breathing practice twice daily can measurably lower cortisol and restore nervous system balance. You have 90 percent responsibility for your health, not 10 percent. Only 10 percent accounts for genetic mutations and factors beyond your control. The other 90 percent comes down to your choices, your willingness to feel, and your commitment to take responsibility. This isn't blame. It's empowerment. Spiritual disconnection is a root cause of disease that most medical systems completely ignore. Research shows 80 to 94 percent better healing outcomes in people with some form of spiritual connection or faith in something bigger than themselves. Healing requires alignment of body, mind, and spirit. Leave one out and you're only managing symptoms. Why This Conversation Matters In a culture obsessed with quick fixes and surface-level solutions, Dr. Jen Hewson offers something radical: the truth that lasting health and sustainable success require us to stop pushing through and start listening to what our bodies, emotions, and spirits have been trying to tell us. Most people are functioning at high levels while internally dysregulated, anxious, and disconnected from themselves and each other. This conversation is essential for anyone who's achieved external success but feels empty on the inside, who's tired of managing symptoms instead of healing at the source, and who's ready to understand that the body, mind, and spirit aren't separate silos to be treated independently. Her message is particularly powerful for high-achieving executives and leaders who've been taught that self-reliance and pushing through are signs of strength, when in reality, learning to listen, rest, and reconnect is what true leadership looks like. Money & Mindset Learning Dr. Hewson grew up with her mother who became pregnant at 14 in poverty-stricken Ontario, Canada. She witnessed her mother struggling with money constantly, overspending, and then scrambling to catch up. That pattern of financial stress and lack mentality shaped her childhood and drove her to achieve at the highest level possible so she would never live in that constant misery. However, she learned that achievement without healing creates a hollow success. Making six figures while dysregulated, anxious, and disconnected from yourself isn't actually success. Real wealth is internal alignment where your body, mind, and spirit are functioning in coherence. She retired early from her high-paying administrative job to pursue work that nourished her soul because she realized that money earned from a place of running away from pain will never satisfy. The deepest learning is that financial success without spiritual connection and physical health becomes just another way to avoid facing yourself. Key Takeaway Stop waiting for permission to heal. Stop looking for someone else to fix you. The boulder has probably already hit you, or it's coming. Your body is speaking through every symptom, every anxiety, every sleepless night. Start listening. Begin with your gut. Regulate your nervous system through simple practices like breath coherence. Reconnect with something bigger than yourself. And understand that healing isn't about becoming someone new. It's about returning to who you were before the world taught you to disconnect from yourself. That's where your real power lies. Bio Dr. Jen Hewson didn't begin her work from a place of ease. She began it from a place of breaking. Long before she became a Doctor of Natural Medicine or built Take Back Your Health, she was navigating deep personal healing — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She learned firsthand what it feels like to function on the outside while falling apart on the inside… and what it takes to truly come back into alignment. Her healing didn't come from quick fixes or surface-level solutions. It came from learning how the body holds stress, how unresolved emotions affect health, and how spiritual disconnection quietly erodes vitality. That journey changed everything — including how she now serve others. Today, Dr Jen integrates root-cause medicine, nervous system regulation, and spiritual insights to support people who are tired of pushing through pain and ready to heal at the source. Her work with high-calibre executives is deeply personal, clinically grounded, and centered on restoring trust in the body and clarity in leadership. Since 2019, she has shared this message on national stages and in transformational workshops with organizations such as Holistic Health Canada and the Canadian Conference Speakers Bureau, helping individuals and teams understand that sustainable success begins with self-leadership and self-care. Her recent published book called Gut Instincts: A Journey of Breaking, Healing and Returning home to God is not only her testimony but a blueprint for others to follow. She does not believe that healing is about becoming someone new…rather she believes it's about returning to who you were before the world taught you to disconnect from yourself. Her work is for those who feel called to live — and lead — with integrity, vitality, and purpose. Real collaboration isn't about being nice. It's about building the structures that allow teams to think, challenge, and solve problems together. In this episode, Kurtis Hewson shares how leaders can move from surface-level cooperation to true collaboration by setting clear purpose, norms, and roles. You'll learn why the room is smarter than any one person in it—and how to unlock that collective power. If you want to build a culture where everyone thrives—not just gets along—this episode is your blueprint. We cover: The difference between collegial and collaborative teams Why structure actually increases creativity How to design meetings that are focused and solution-oriented The power of shared language (like locus of control) Why leaders must “set the banks of the river” and let the water flow
How can schools ensure every student benefits from collective expertise without overwhelming teachers with endless meetings? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Joshua Stamper talks with Kurtis Hewson, co author of Collaborative Response and co founder of Jigsaw Learning, about a school wide model that replaces fragmented teams with purposeful, layered collaborative structures centered on data, evidence, and a clear continuum of supports.Kurtis explains how to shift from “tiering students” to “tiering supports,” where Tier 1 defines non negotiable universal practices, Tier 2 offers classroom based options, and higher tiers coordinate beyond classroom resources without labeling kids. He breaks down the game changing collaborative team meeting format that reduces overall meetings by adding one intentional space where teachers share celebrations, generate solutions for common issues, and build capacity across the building.About Kurtis Hewson Kurtis Hewson is a highly sought-after keynote speaker, author and professional learning facilitator. Send us a textWhen Susie Hewson watched a TV program about chlorine bleaching in paper products in 1989, she never imagined it would launch a 35-year journey revolutionizing feminine hygiene. As founder of Nature Care, Susie transformed an industry by creating certified organic, compostable period products free from toxins and plastics at a time when women entrepreneurs faced extraordinary barriers. The environmental impact is striking—Nature Care customers prevent plastic equivalent to a blue whale from entering marine environments annually just by choosing sustainable products. But Susie's fight extended beyond creating alternatives; she faced corporate lawyers attempting to silence her advocacy and banks refusing loans to women entrepreneurs. Through persistence and unwavering integrity, she built a company embodying her personal values while educating consumers about hidden dangers in conventional products.Particularly alarming is Susie's revelation about regulatory oversight—agencies like the FDA don't conduct independent research but rely on industry-provided data to determine product safety. This explains why harmful ingredients remain on shelves for decades before being recognized as dangerous. She urges consumers to look beyond marketing claims for legitimate certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), warning specifically about "bamboo" products that undergo toxic processing despite eco-friendly marketing. At 72, Susie embodies the benefits of conscious living with "the cardiovascular system of a 35-year-old." Her journey demonstrates how one person's determination can create lasting change, not just in an industry but in how we approach our health and environmental impact. Through Nature Care's "Be Kind" project and commitment to donating 1% of turnover to environmental causes, she reminds us that meaningful impact often starts with simple, thoughtful choices.Ready to make healthier choices for yourself and the planet? Yellowjackets features some of the very best ensemble casting across the board, but there's no denying we got an extra special duo in Liv Hewson and Lauren Ambrose. At the start of the Showtime and Paramount+ series, Van Palmer was not meant to make it out of the wilderness alive. However, thanks to Hewson's screen presence and creative spark, it became abundantly clear that they deserved more time to shine. Not only did the showrunners shift gears and have Van survive the wolf attack in Season 1, Episode 7, but at the start of Season 2, they revealed that Van makes it home from wilderness with the introduction of Ambrose's present-day version of the character. From that point on, we've enjoyed a breathtaking level of connectivity between the two actors. However, as of Season 3, Episode 9, “How the Story Ends,” the time of Van Palmer being a dual role has ended. The character doesn't succumb to her cancer diagnosis, but rather, is stabbed by Hilary Swank's present-day Melissa. It's a crushing end for a fan-favorite character, one that Ambrose admits, doesn't offer closure, but because it was never meant to. However, Ambrose herself has found peace in the feeling that she “was just handing [Van] back to Liv.”With all of Yellowjackets Season 3 available to stream on Paramount+, and with the show's Emmy campaign picking up steam, I got the opportunity to welcome Ambrose to Collider Ladies Night. During our 40-minute chat, we revisited some pivotal moments of her career, many of which pointed toward a deep appreciation of the rehearsal process. And, it turns out, that love of rehearsing is what helped her and Swank figure out how to play Van's death and deliver a scene that feels “crackling and real and exciting and weird.” Hosted on Acast. Yellowjackets has a phenomenal team at the helm. Showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco do a top-tier job steering the ship. However, one thing that's been apparent since the very beginning is how much their ensemble cares about their characters. It's a level of passion, dedication and collaboration that undoubtedly bolsters their presence in the show and their impact on the narrative. A prime example of that? How Liv Hewson changed the game for their character, Van Palmer. In May 2023, Hewson became the very first guest on Collider Forces, a show they inspired. Collider Forces is a Collider Ladies Night spin-off series designed to use a similar style of conversation to highlight even more need-to-know voices in this industry, ones that are changing it for the better. Hewson's inspired significant change in recent years. Change for themself, change for non-binary representation in Hollywood, and also a significant change to the Yellowjackets narrative. Alice talks about the challenges of being neurodivergent in the world we live in, which isn't set up for neurodivergent people, and how this can often translate into the work place. She shares her own experiences and also offers some practical ideas for both employers and neurodivergent people themselves, for how neurodivergent people can feel safe and protected in the work place. She also shares some thoughts and examples of how neurodivergent people can build structures and processes which will help them thrive in the work place rather than be overwhelmed, and to avoid potential meltdowns You can read more about this in her book "Neurodiversity in the Workplace" which is available wherever books are sold.

Eli Hewson of Inhaler usually stays up and writes all night. Come morning, he heads to bed and will sometimes pass his father Bono (yes, that Bono), who is just beginning his day and starting to write. (All of the band members live with their parents.) Hewson's admittedly "terrible sleeping habits" are nothing new; when he was five years old, his mother often found him watching tv in the middle of the night. Hewson's bandmate Josh Jenkinson wants no part of those late night writing sessions. "I just go to bed," he says. Jenkinson is a daytime writer; like Hewson, he's most productive when no one else is around. And in his case, that's when his mother is at work and the house is quiet. Aside from that difference, Hewson and Jenkinson mostly see eye-to-eye on the writing process. Both extol the benefits of the Rubik's Cube, of all things, on songwriting. Jenkinson says that the problem solving "becomes so mechanical that I can think about other things while I'm doing it." And both lament the "erosion of boredom" and how its loss impacts our ability to create.Inhaler's latest album Open Wide is out now.Send us a text

I'm a huge supporter of professionals taking ownership of their careers; regardless of the systemic issues at play. But having said that, I ALSO like to help educators get to a place where they can work towards addressing systems issues head on.That's why I was so excited to talk with Kurtis Hewson about the Collaborative Response Framework in episode 174 of De Facto Leaders.Kurtis Hewson is an award-winning former administrator and teacher, as well as teaching faculty at the post-secondary level. He is the co-founder of Jigsaw Learning, a co-author of the text, “Collaborative Response: Three Foundational Components That Transform How We Respond to the Needs of Learners” (Corwin, 2022), and currently works with districts and schools nationally and internationally establishing Collaborative Response frameworks and interacting with thousands of educators annually.Good teachers, therapists, and administrators often develop toolkits they can use to offer a continuum of support to students. But as Kurtis points out, they're often operating in “silos of excellence”. What would happen if team members worked together to pool their resources? We discuss this topic in this episode, including:✅People in education talk a lot about the problems with “the system”. But what is the “system” and how do we improve it?✅Is talking about individual student needs always the best use of time at team meetings?✅Meetings sometimes feel like an obligation or a waste of time. How do we change that?✅What types of meetings should district level teams have and what's the purpose of each?✅Why school teams need 4 tiers of support rather than the traditional 3 tiers of RtI.In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop a strategic plan for putting executive functioning support in place in collaboration with their school teams.
