Few presidents entered office more distrusted than America's 21st chief executive, Chester A. Arthur. But one American, Julia Sand, believed that he could rise to the occasion. What ensued was one of the most surprising and unlikely episodes in presidential history -- one that is the basis of a new documentary from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, titled Dear Mr. President: The Letters of Julia Sand. In this episode, I interview the producer of the documentary, Destry Edwards. Former president Chester A. Arthur is probably best remembered for his mutton chops and as a trivia question. But he did play a surprising role as a reformer when the nation was in the grips of political corruption. And the story of how he found the courage to do so holds some lessons for how we might interact with political power today in hopes of a better tomorrow. Joining Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is Destry Edwards to discuss his new documentary Dear Mr. President: The Letters of Julia Sand, and how a single citizen can have an outsized effect on our political system. About Destry Edwards Destry Edwards is the Media Production and Studio Manager at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. With a passion for both film and politics, Destry seeks to use storytelling as a way to bridge the gap between people and policy. He is a native of the great state of South Carolina. Before coming on with CEI, Destry's background includes time at FreedomWorks and Blaze Media. Destry holds a Bachelor of Science in Cinema Production from Bob Jones University. About the Documentary In 1881, following President James Garfield's assassination, the country was in turmoil. Many suspected Vice President Chester Arthur, a long-time beneficiary of the spoils system, to be a party to the plot and dreaded his ascension to the presidency. In the immediate aftermath—and before the height of the women's suffrage movement—New Yorker Julia Sand wrote to the soon-to-be President. Between August 1881 and September 1883, Sand penned 23 letters to President Arthur imploring him to abandon his corrupt machinations, become the leader the country deserved, and champion civil service reform. The Competitive Enterprise Institute proudly presents the documentary Dear Mr. President: The Letters of Julia Sand to discover the outsized effect a single citizen can have on our political system. You can watch the full documentary on the streaming platform SalemNow.

But before that, we've also got the teaser trailer for the upcoming documentary podcast Otherwise Objectionable, hosted by Mike for the Competitive Enterprise Institute. You can listen to them both right here on this week's episode.

Of course, these same heartless elites are more than happy to turn around and negotiate a free-trade agreement with South American countries that have great, much cheaper agricultural produce since in Mercosur there is no equivalent ‘green' legislation. As the country moves through a contentious election season, where the state of the economy and worries over inflation have been a major talking point, a new economic hazard has appeared on the horizon threatening to hammer the American consumer just as Hurricane Helene threatened – and then did – hammer the Southeast: the International Longshoreman Association, a union of dockworkers who manage the transport, loading, unloading, and all other things associated with shipping containers at the nation's ports, threatened – and then did – go on strike over wages and automation of their jobs. Here to explain what's happening, what it could mean for the American consumer right before a busy holiday shopping season, and if any deal or government action may be forthcoming are my colleague and usual podcast host Mike Watson, who also happens to be our labor expert, and Sean Higgins, a research fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute here in Washington, DC specializing in labor and employment issues. Jonah is coming off an electric evening with the Competitive Enterprise Institute, where he danced with fire eaters and geeked out with fellow think tank nationals. As a result, he is well prepared to dig into the Hezbollah-pager plot, Trump's Freudian slip in his attempt to combat antisemitism, the Rich Lowry non-controversy, and the continued bad behavior of J.D. Vance. To close it out, Jonah scolds the media for playing morality police and reminds those still inhabiting the world of the sane of the unbelievable idiocy of Donald Trump's defenders.
