Speaking to Matt Elton, Elisabeth Leake reveals how the invasion and ensuing occupation would go on to shape not only modern Afghanistan but also the course of the Cold War and subsequent international relations. It's our favorite time of year here on the Commonweal Podcast. On this special episode, we revisit four of our best interviews from 2021: Phil Klay elucidates the complexities of modern warfare. Rita Ferrone explains how Catholic tradition evolves. Alice McDermott tells us what made her decide to become a writer. And Susannah Heschel describes how the spiritual legacy of her father, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, can help us fight for social justice today. Six weeks after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, can we really say that America is no longer a country at war? On this episode, we're featuring two reflections—one political, the other philosophical—on America's “forever war.” Longtime Commonweal contributor and historian Andrew J. Bacevich explains the little-understood Carter Doctrine, and why it needs to go, while fiction writer and Marine Corps veteran Phil Klay asks whether war can ever be considered “humane.” Both are in conversation with Commonweal senior editor Matt Boudway. In which the rate of Justen Headphones Moments is drastically reduced. This is it. The big one. This is PODCAST WITHOUT END. In the first half of War Without End, we discuss the principle of Occam's Razor as applied to “time travel or deepfake”, question what Sinclair sees in Garibaldi, and threaten to call pest control for an infestation of Zathrii. In the back half, we give an important PSA about talking about time travel with your romantic partner(s), rename octopi as “Terran Octo-Dick Fish”, and realize that Marcus operates on D&D player logic and rolls 20s. More seriously, we discuss the role of this episode in the broader narrative arc of the show and as a send-off for both Sinclair and O'Hare, what makes a time travel episode work, and moments of transition vs moments of revelation.Connect with the show at @babylonpodjectHelp us keep the lights on via our Patreon!Justen can be found at @justenwritesAna can be found at @The_Mianaai, and also made our show art. Both Ana and Justen can also be found on The Compleat Discography, a Discworld re-read podcast.Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude.

Over the past decade, the world witnessed peaceful, local protests against police brutality morph into one of the century's most brutal civil wars. Since 2011, bullets and bombs have terrorised the Syrian people. But the man many blame for that descent into chaos, is still in control. Bashar al Assad has ruled Syria for over twenty years and he's made it clear he has no plans to step down. While it's hoped the worst of the war is now behind us, Syria desperately needs to rebuild and forge a path forward. But with Assad still in power, is that even possible? The US administration said Bashar al Assad's days were numbered back in 2012. But as Syria marks 10 years since the civil war began, Assad remains in power. And he's stayed there with backing from Moscow and Tehran.

SHOW NOTES EPISODE 124: “A War Without End, Amen” This week Host Dave Bledsoe gets a little chilly and goes searching for a comfy knitted blanket. On the show this week we talk about the latest plan win with war and bring us peace with honor. (We think this means Afghanistan, but we are not completely sure.) Along the way we reminisce about a simple time, when a cell phone was just a phone, Donald Trump was only making life miserable for pageant contestants and the country was reeling from the largest terrorist attack in history. (Those were the days!) We also remember the horrors of Microsoft Windows ME, the real horror of Y2K. We examine all the plans to win Afghanistan from all the Presidents stretching back to the beginning of the war, which we believe was during William Howard Taft Administration. (His plan: Rifled muskets!) We tally up the cost of sixteen years of war human and economic and wonder if maybe it was a bad decision in the first place. Which is just crazy talk, because we all know the Bush Administration would never do anything STUPID! This week in the Wayback we go all the way back to 1829 and when the chaps sent a few of the boys from Delhi to Kabul to see what they were on about. (Turns out they were on about killing British!) Our Sponsor is the very real and not at all made up Open Cola, the open source soda pop. We open the show this week with a quote attributed to Alexander the Great but really came from the worst Rambo movie and we close with YouTuber Jackson Daniel covering George Strait. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcY0F9dnOXo) Citations Needed: Open Cola is real, not spectacular, The Butcher's Bill, The Bar Tab, Looks Like MY Report Card.
