The group starts their day preparing for the voyage to Midmount, with mixed feelings about crossing the ocean. Chan is visibly anxious, running between her room and downstairs, mainly worried about being a fire hazard on a wooden boat. Valen offers his magical flask to ease her nerves. Bob sings a sea shanty from his mentor, Rosco, while Dona expresses her apprehension about traveling by water. Thankfully, Thorak ensures everyone is well-fed with his signature large meals. Upon arrival at the docks, the group is guided by an automaton to their ship, The Voyager, where they meet its warforged captain, Vessel, and a crew of small automatons. As they set sail, Bob privately asks Valen for help meditating to contact his patron. Valen agrees and encourages Bob to speak with Thorak, a cleric, for spiritual guidance.While settling in, Bob attempts his first connection with his patron and feels something stir. Excited, he shares the moment with Valen, who continues practicing with his sword and experimenting with his magical flask. One swig causes him to burp fire, but the next renders him ethereal, unseen but present, leading to concern from the rest of the group. Valen enjoys the new experience, but the others, especially Thorak, decide the flask should be taken from him temporarily. After a heartfelt conversation, Dona returns it with a promise from Valen to use it more mindfully going forward. Meanwhile, Bob dives deeper into his connection with his patron and finds himself submerged in a vision. He senses another presence and questions whether he's being punished for failing to recognize his patron sooner.The next morning, Valen recounts his brief shift into the ethereal plane, noting that while reckless, it was helpful in future encounters. While Bob studies the maps, Chan explores the ship and familiarizes herself with Vessel. Valen and Thorak train together, with Thorak now blindfolded and relying on his familiar Paco to “see,” testing strategies that may come in handy. Bob and Chan reflect on his vision; though she's uncertain how to help, she offers to consult her sister, who's more knowledgeable about such matters. Grateful, Bob thanks her. As the day ends, Vessel informs the party that they are one day away from Midmount. Radley Fullthorn, the Human Eldritch Knight, and Daermon Cobain, the Elf Arcane Trickster, were unconscious, dragged to safety by allies while Urihorn Tenpenny, the Halfling Beastmaster, and his panther kept watch. Above, Wachter's patrols rattled doors and questioned villagers, searching for fugitives.When Radley and Daermon regained consciousness, the group debated their next move. Their companion Traxidor, the Half-elf Cleric of Light, had been executed. Worse, his body was strung up in public. In Barovia, corpses are not only reminders of mortality but tools of terror. Radley recalled earlier visions of hanged comrades — Valen'eir's ghost and Baron Vallakovich's lynching — all echoes of this grim moment. Barovia repeats its cruelties, each cycle sharper than the last.The group considered a desperate plan. Perhaps the Abbot at Krezk could resurrect Traxidor, if they could reclaim his body. Dannika scouted the gates, reporting guards and wardens everywhere. She armed Radley with studded leather and a raven-crested shield, a sign of the Keepers of the Feather, the wereraven resistance. Urihorn revealed he could heal and offered Van Richten's potion. Plans set, they waited for nightfall.At the square, Traxidor's corpse swayed in the dark. Four guards stood watch. Daermon and Radley approached disguised as drunks, hoping to lower suspicion. Urihorn, hidden above with bow drawn, covered them. The ruse worked. Guards jeered, ready to shake down “drunkards.” The ambush was swift: Daermon slid a dagger through a heart, Radley crushed another, Urihorn's arrows dropped the rest. One fleeing man burned alive from Radley's fire bolt, another fell pierced by arrows. No mercy tonight.Then laughter echoed. Lady Wachter's voice boomed unnaturally loud, mocking their efforts as predictable. Her image shimmered nearby. Daermon lunged, cleaving her form — but his blade passed through. She was only an illusion.The air rippled. From portals spilled fiends: Spined Devils, winged horrors firing volleys of burning barbs, and a towering Barbed Devil, stinking of brimstone, its hide covered in jagged spines, its eyes glowing with malice. Lady Wachter had summoned servants of Asmodeus, lord of the Nine Hells.The battle turned desperate. Spines rained. Hellfire burned. Radley's fire bolt splashed harmlessly against the devils' infernal resistances. Urihorn loosed arrow after arrow, panther snarling. Daermon dodged, struck, and poured Van Richten's potion down Radley's throat to keep him alive. The cleric's corpse swung like bait, pierced by spines meant for Radley.Urihorn found a mark — one devil burst into ash. But more pressed on. Radley cut the noose, slinging Traxidor's body over his shoulder. Spines pierced the corpse but missed his living flesh. Devils chased them down alleys, fireballs crashing, barbs flying. Together, the adventurers staggered toward the Blue Water Inn, wounded, burdened, pursued. The city itself seemed to close in.Barovia always twists rescue into torment. They had slain guards, claimed Traxidor's body, even destroyed a devil. But they remained hunted, battered, and uncertain if they could even reach sanctuary. The party and the Elder Brain exchange words before facing off for what seems to be quite the battle for the party with more muscle than not. There's a brief moment to prepare before things get going, and starting with Valen being thrown to the Elder Brain by the Slash Brothers. However, before they get a chance to do much else, most of the party is stunned due to a psychic attack, leaving the melee fighters out of the fight for quite some time. Chantico throws down a wall of fire, Valen is wrapped up by a tentacle, and Dona is firing shots from her bow, keeping the damage piling on. Slowly, but surely, Thorak enters the fight again, dealing heavy damage to the creature of nightmares, but it's not without sustaining heavy damage himself. Valen, who is slowly getting hit points chipped away, is given some healing by Chantico, who tries to figure out how to help her new ally. Meanwhile, Thorak is now fighting a spectral entity known as the Herald of the King on the backline. Spells, arrows, blades, and obscenities fly as the fight continues. In the end, thanks to Bob and Ursus returning to the fray, they deal the decisive blows to their foe, defeating it, and they all receive visions of 3 figures who they assume will soon be enemies they encounter who work for the King in Yellow.They gather themselves and their spoils and traverse back the way they came with Chantico, taking the lead. We end with the party taking off for a bit to do some work, gather supplies, train, and get some well-deserved rest. As the group continues to traverse and make their way through the dungeon, they come upon a room with a table and several steins of ale laid across it. Chantico, Dona, and Urusus are suddenly compelled to go and have a drink. Before they all make their way to do so, the rest of the party members, understanding something is amiss, do their best to wake their party members up and out of their current conditions. Dona and Chan do come to, but Ursus has a more difficult time than the women as he continues to reach for this ale. Dona and Thorak do everything to smash and destroy these temptations, but to no avail, as they magically reappear on the table and refill. When Ursus finally does take a sip of ale, he says it's the best ale he's ever had, which takes their drunk monk by surprise and makes him feel a little hurt. Upon completing his drink, the vessel was refilled and grew in size. Ursus, realizing somewhat that the party wanted to leave but was compelled to stay, lifts the giant stein glass and attempts to carry it back with him towards the exit. Which doesn't work, and a now flustered party is doing anything and everything to get one half of the Slash Brothers back to his right mind. Finally, the shifter gets his wits about him and resists the urge to keep this glass.As they venture further, they find themselves in a room made of obsidian. There is a table set for one with a book placed on top of it. As Valen goes to investigate the book and gets closer, the book flutters open with a breeze that came from nowhere. The group hears a raspy voice that begins to speak to them incorporeally. A riddle that left the group stumped for some time. They start trying to read the book and investigate it and its surroundings further, until Chantico begins to think about it more and realizes the answer is “skeletons.” As she says it out loud, the group starts to fight. After this fight, the voice reappears and begins to speak a new riddle to the group. Following the logic that this is all tied to necromancy, Valen says “zombie, probably,” which is the correct answer, and zombies then appear, triggering yet another fight. After successfully slaying the zombies, the group picks up on the notion that there are no other gimmicks other than answering the riddle, and the said creature appears for them to fight. With that information, they prepare for the voice's riddle once again. While still in wildshape as a giant hyena with a flaming mohawk, Chantico realizes the answer, but also that the group wouldn't be able to understand her. Hence, she takes some of the mess from the zombies to write out “wight,” to which Ursus replies, “A wight? What the fuck is that?” triggering the answer and the inevitable fight. They engage in another skirmish and emerge victorious. As they regain their bearings, the voice speaks to them once again. It's Dona who says the answer, which is a “lich.” Upon her saying that, the doors to the room reappear, the book and table setting disappear, and the group realizes the trial is done, but they also question if the King in Yellow is a Lich. With some discussion, they begin to realize they need to rest, and they decide that this is the best course of action before proceeding further, as well as preparing for the unknown that's yet to come. We open up with the party, resting a bit, and going through their new loot. Ursus gets Thorak's thoughts on his new crown to the group. With rest had, the group continues their dungeon crawl and encounters two cave trolls as Ursus kicks down a door, and Thorak launches two spider legs, like javelins, at one of them, dealing a good bit of damage. The fight ensues with the party as the victors and the trolls as charred remains. The group takes a second to catch their breath. There is a brief discussion about which door to continue through, and Dona informs the party of the direction that her Primeval Awareness has pointed them toward, as Bob gets an urge to pull the lever in the room. Unbeknownst to the group, Bob initially informs them that he is hearing a voice urging him to pull the lever with the unknown function. The group inquires about the sources of these voices and any other information they can gather from Bob regarding them. As this is happening, he continues to walk closer to the lever and tells the party that he really would like to pull this lever. Through slightly tense and more awkward negotiations with Bob, Valen convinces him to back away, but only agrees to Bob's terms of Ursus carrying Bob out of the room, much to Ursus's displeasure. As Ursus carries Bob out the door, Thorak tells Valen that he'll throw a “javelin” at the lever. Upon a hit, they'll run like hell to the other side of the room, towards what they presume is safety. Thorak's attempt fails, but Valen decides that they both have the speed to pull the lever with a long enough rope and get to safety if needed. With the lever pulled, they hear a short, electrical burst-like sound and see nothing happen. With curiosity satisfied, they proceed west in the direction that Dona pointed them toward. The group comes upon a door that Valen has some difficulty lockpicking. As the group is stealthy, thanks to Pass Without Trace from Dona, they remain cautious of the cloakers in the area, preferring not to engage with them. As the cloaks fly away from the leading group towards Thorak, Thorak uses Thaumaturgy to open the door that Chantico and Valen were opening, unfortunately springing an acid trap in the process. As the two take damage and the group proceeds through the doorway, another group of cloakers frightens a number of the party members, and yet another battle takes place bathed in the Daylight spell from Chan's staff. While the party is victorious, they have taken some damage and are getting low on resources. As we close, the party is deciding if they wish to take the hides of the cloakers as materials, which Thorak does, and they use this chance to gather their thoughts and rest yet again before venturing further into the dungeon. But like many young men right now, Aaron is unsure that college is for him. He feels incomplete, lost somehow — and he's yearning for a way to make it big. Then one day, while at the gym, Aaron meets a bodybuilder, an enormous man who says he's made “crazy money” selling solar panels down in Florida. You should check it out, he says. After thinking about it, Aaron takes the plunge, leaving college to join a door-to-door solar panel sales crew named Seal Team Six. He spends his days “blitzing” neighborhoods with his colleagues — also young men wanting to strike it rich. In the evenings, Aaron records content for his fledgling YouTube channel and downs burritos with the bros, all the while seeking personal enlightenment (and paying for his lodging, and making very little money, and not receiving benefits).I've been telling people, this article is quintessential Article Club material. The writing is superb, the pace is quick, and most importantly, you'll have empathy for Aaron, because Mr. Koerner writes with compassion. In addition, the piece explores many of the topics we care about: masculinity, capitalism, higher education, technology, and the American dream. If you haven't read it yet, I hope you try it.The Author (and why I appreciated our conversation)Brendan I. Koerner is a contributing editor at Wired, where he writes in-depth stories about criminal justice, national security, biomedical research, and sundry other topics. Mr. Koerner is also the author of two books of narrative nonfiction: Now the Hell Will Start, the tale of an American G.I. who went native in the Indo-Burmese jungle, and The Skies Belong to Us, a history of the American hijacking epidemic of the late 1960s and early 1970s.I appreciated my conversation with Mr. Koerner for many reasons. We covered a wide range of topics, including how this article came about, how he found Aaron, and why he was interested in the topic. Mr. Koerner also spoke about how he reported and organized the piece, and most importantly, how he wanted the reader to feel about Aaron. He said, “ We have to come out of this admiring Aaron, because I admire Aaron. He made kind of a foolish choice, which he acknowledges, and he went through something kind of crazy, but I admire him. I admire his authenticity. I admire his earnestness. I admire his perspective and his intellect.”It was illuminating to hear Mr. Koerner share his thoughts on the challenges that young men face and the allure of get-rich-quick schemes, especially when they embrace notions of spirituality and self-help and cultiness. I liked the entire interview, but my favorite part was when Mr. Koerner talked about his teenage son, who is not much younger than Aaron.
