Somewhere out there is a Dungeon Master with three notebooks of lore… a detailed pantheon… a map with trade routes… …and no campaign. Worldbuilding is one of the greatest joys of being a Dungeon Master — and one of the fastest ways to stall a game before it ever begins. This is Dungeon Mastering 101, and today we're talking about worldbuilding without getting lost — how to build only what you need, and how to turn your setting into a tool, not a burden. All links are in the description below. Discussion Segment 1 — The Worldbuilding Trap New Dungeon Masters often believe: “I need to build the whole world before we play.” You don't. In fact, overbuilding can: delay starting the game lock you into ideas that don't serve the table make improvisation harder, not easier Worldbuilding should serve play, not replace it. Segment 2 — Start Where the Characters Are The only part of the world that matters is: where the characters are what they care about what's about to happen Everything else is optional. Build outward in concentric circles: The immediate location Nearby threats or opportunities Distant forces that might matter later If the players can't reach it, they don't need it yet. Segment 3 — Build in Broad Strokes, Not Detail Think in impressions, not encyclopedias. Instead of: “The Kingdom of Valen has a three-tier tax system…” Use:  “Valen is rich, paranoid, and ruled by bureaucracy.” Broad strokes: give you flexibility are easier to remember invite player interpretation Details should emerge through play, not prep. Segment 4 — Turn the World Into a Problem Generator A good setting creates problems, not just flavor. Ask: Who wants something they can't have? What is about to break? What happens if no one intervenes? Worldbuilding works best when: factions collide values conflict power is unstable If nothing is in tension, the world is static. Segment 5 — Let Players Help Build the World Your players are an untapped resource. Ways to involve them: Ask where their character is from Let them name places or NPCs Tie backstory into existing conflicts This does two things: reduces your workload increases player investment Shared ownership makes the world feel alive. Segment 6 — Reusable Worldbuilding Smart worldbuilding can be reused endlessly. Create: factions instead of organizations themes instead of histories NPC roles instead of fixed characters Example:  “Corrupt local authority” can appear in: a village a city a kingdom Reuse patterns — reskin details. Segment 7 — Maps Are Optional Maps are tools, not requirements. You only need a map when: location matters tactically travel choices are meaningful players ask for one Otherwise: verbal geography is enough sketches beat perfection imagination fills the gaps Never let cartography stop play. Segment 8 — Worldbuilding as a Play Aid Ask yourself: “How does this help me run the game?” Good worldbuilding helps you: improvise NPC reactions answer player questions create consequences quickly If a detail doesn't make play easier, cut it. Segment 9 — The DM101 Mindset Shift Here's the key mindset change: You are not creating a world to be admired.  You are creating a world to be used. Your setting is: flexible incomplete responsive A living world grows in response to player action — not prep time. Worldbuilding doesn't need to be big to be meaningful. Start small. Build outward. Let play do the heavy lifting. When your world exists to support the table, you'll never feel lost in it again. The Serpent's Strait Ch. 7As we kick off the fight, Bob hurls a psychic lance at the sister and gets the party started. The fight commences, and Sister Flinthorn isn't pulling any punches against the crew. After Valen zooms at her, throwing several kicks and punches, a confused look passes over him as she has used the shield to beef herself up for this encounter. She turns to the rest of the group and casts synaptic static at them, and throws a monkey wrench immediately at any of their plan. Chantico fires off some scorching rays and uses fiery teleport to better reposition herself, Bob uses cloud of daggers, and Thorak attempts to grapple her himself, but gets banished instead, but only briefly, as a blow from Valen breaks her concentration. It's a more brutal fight than they had anticipated, for sure. Chantico sets the roof and Sister ablaze with flame strike, and Ursus lands a decisive blow to Flinthorn. Before the crowd gathers further, Valen slips away to get a feel for the town and to see if stopping her had any effect on the citizens. It didn't, and in fact, the closer Valen moved towards the mines, the more it felt as if something was trying to prevent him from going into them and exploring further. With his stillness of mind, he manages to come back to his senses and regroups with the party.Meanwhile, the party makes their exit after the fiery explosion that took the church with molten bronze and THE book in tow. Back at their lodging for the evening, the group divvies up watches and insists on keeping an eye on the townsfolk who are giving off strange vibes. They are muttering, and all seem to be gathering around the middle of the town, amongst a great bonfire. Valen, having observed this on the rooftop during his watch, informs the next watch, Thorak, of what is going on. Thorak takes his watch to experiment with some bits of monster he's collected and some other varying items to try to make a poison of some kind, a failed first attempt, but it makes for great learning. The final watch is split between Ursus and Chantico: Chantico on the rooftop, where Valen observed the crazed townfolk, and Ursus below, keeping an eye on things internally. Chantico updates Ursus on the happenings in this bizarre mining town, and he tells her to prepare a good mix of spells for the fight ahead. As they get ready for the day, they look back and see the square emptying and heading towards the mines. An eerie, ominous, and chilling dread washes over the party at this information. We pick up where we left off the morning after the party's stakeout of sorts. It seems as if Ursus was not the only person visited last night, as we learn Bob also came in contact with an unfamiliar figure, presumably an Ashen Child. The party splits for the morning, with the Slash Bros at the temple, where they find Sister Flinthorn, who discusses Ursus' evening encounter with the Ashen Children and receives a refresher course on who the Silent Keeper is. Back at the tavern, where the rest of the group is having some food, they start connecting the dots regarding what happened with the ships, the Ashen Children, and other things that haven't lined up. Chantico's sister, Tozi, gets in contact with her amid all this and checks in on her, informing her that she will get back to her about Bob when she has more information to share. Eventually, Bob, Ursus, and Thorak meet with everyone else. After exchanging information, they conclude that while the circumstances are similar to those of a false hydra, these are not identical situations. This doesn't leave the group feeling much better about their circumstances. It's then that they realize they are marking themselves, and they are losing time every time they encounter the being (or beings) causing all of this. After that, they attend their meeting and obtain the address where they were just yesterday, but with a different point of contact. Not Lua Hugh, but a one Nora Vakara. Instead of drawing too much attention to the discrepancy, they leave to go investigate.It's here that things really go off the rails. As they approach the home, the group realizes time has been passing rapidly, and marks are appearing more frequently. It's then that Thorak uses Paco as his eyes, while Valen blindfolds himself and utilizes his blindsense, a way to see without being affected by the entities causing all this. And, to their (mis)fortune, they can see and begin fighting the strange grey beings and instruct the group to keep them contained. By losing eye contact with them, they forget, so Valen stuns one, Thorak grows large and grapples a few, and Chantico restrains one via her druidic magic. An intense fight later, they manage to restrain one with a rope and with Bob's tentacles, Elizabeth, and kill the rest of them. They take them through the city to the temple and try to gauge the situation. In showing the creature to Sister Flintorn, something bothered Thorak. Barovia doesn't believe in quiet mornings.The sun doesn't rise so much as negotiate with the fog, and when the party left Argynvostholt—bruised, burned, and out of everything but sarcasm—they were just trying to make it to the Wizards of Wine without adding another ghost to their growing collection.But the Svalich Road had other ideas.As the grey dawn crept in, the flicker of a bonfire appeared between the trees. Cut to: pine forest, heavy mist, silhouettes moving around a ritual circle. Urihorn scouts ahead and finds a scene straight out of a Barovian horror mural: wild druids preparing a sacrifice. Their prisoner—bound, smeared with wolfsbane, mugwort, and nightshade—is Riven Thal.What happens next is chaos.Cut to arrows, spell flashes, a druid collapsing into ash under Riven's Moonbeam. Riven, newly transformed into a chimeric cat, bolts up a tree and refuses to come down. He stares at the party through branches, glowing eyes full of mistrust. When he finally shifts back, he drops Moonbeam like a glowing warning line between himself and us.And that's how Riven joins the group: cautious, wounded, and deeply convinced we might be worse than the cultists.The road continues. The fog thickens. The camera follows the party to the next clearing where another campfire burns low. And standing there—with an axe and the world's worst timing—is Izek Strazni, Vallaki's executioner. The man who beheaded our former companion Valen'eir.Traxidor sees him and snaps.Cut to: Guiding Bolt blasting across the grass. Radley joins in. Daermon, too. Riven casts Hold Person just to stop the cleric from doing something irreversible.And then the forest explodes.A teenage wizard bursts from the trees, screaming, “Leave him alone!” Cue the orange surge of a Fireball blossoming across the clearing. Slow-mo: Urihorn's panther hurled backward and instantly killed. Radley shielding himself. Traxidor thrown to his knees. Riven staggering from the blast.The boy is Victor Vallakovich—son of Vallaki's previous burgomaster, amateur necromancer, full-time disaster. When Traxidor tries to heal, Victor flicks off a Counterspell like he's dismissing an insect. Daermon charms him before he unleashes round two.Then everything stops.Izek breaks free of the magical paralysis but doesn't attack. Instead, he talks. And the truth he gives is nothing like the one we built in our heads. According to Izek, our fallen companion Valen'eir murdered Milivoj the gravedigger, confessed to serving Strahd, and promised the town would burn. And the next day, Vallaki did.As the truth settles, even the fog seems to pause. Ravens circle overhead. Victor awkwardly waves at Daermon. And Izek, dragging the boy away, tells us to leave him be.Cut to ravens descending to peck at the remains of Urihorn's panther. A grim little epilogue to the morning.Finally, the party reaches the Wizards of Wine. Warm light. Family. Safety, or something like it. Over dinner, the Martikovs debate Vallaki's future, but Danika ends the conversation with a single chilling line:“Barovia has only one ruler.”The whole room goes quiet. The fire pops. And that's when someone notices something wrong—something impossible.Urihorn, sitting among friends, bathed in candlelight…does not cast a shadow.Cut to black.

In Barovia, exhaustion isn't just a condition. It's a worldview.And when Session Twenty-Three began, that's exactly where we were—drained, bruised, and barely held together after ghosts, scarecrows, giant spiders, and one very opinionated abandoned manor.We left Argynvostholt like survivors crawling out of a collapsed mine, heading toward the only place in Barovia that still feels remotely like home: the Wizards of Wine Winery. A place with warmth, family, and maybe even joy, if the mist isn't listening too closely.But Barovia never lets you walk in peace.At dawn, we spotted the glow of a bonfire hidden in the trees. Urihorn scouted ahead and found—of course—a ritual sacrifice in progress. A druid and a pack of wild men preparing to carve open a bound stranger smeared with wolfsbane and nightshade. Classic Barovian hospitality.That stranger was Riven Thal. And he joined our party in the most Barovia way possible: crawling through the dirt, blasting his captors with Moonbeam from the top of a pine tree, and then refusing to come down because he did not trust us at all. Fair.Riven's introduction said everything we needed to know:this man survives. And he survives suspicious.After a tense standoff, he agreed to travel with us, keeping one eye on the road and one eye on us.But the day had other plans.Further along the Svalich Road, we found a small camp where Izek Strazni—the executioner who beheaded our former companion—was quietly chopping wood. Traxidor saw him and immediately tried to smite him out of existence.And that's when the forest exploded in fire.A teenage wizard came screaming out of the trees—Victor Vallakovich, the old Burgomaster's son—and launched a Fireball straight into our group. Urihorn's panther died instantly. The rest of us barely stayed standing. Traxidor tried to heal himself, but Victor Counterspelled him like he was swatting a fly. Daermon charmed the boy before he could kill us all.And then came the twist.Izek, freed from the Hold Person spell, didn't attack.He explained. Calmly. Honestly. Maybe even painfully.Our friend Valen'eir—the wizard Izek executed—had murdered a young gravedigger, confessed to serving Strahd, and threatened Vallaki. Izek claimed he was carrying out justice, not vengeance.The explanation didn't fix anything, but it changed everything.Suddenly the question wasn't “Is Izek evil?”It was “What do we not know about each other?”Riven watched this unfold like someone judging a very poorly run cult. Urihorn remembered that Van Richten once warned him Radley and Daermon might secretly serve Strahd. And at that moment, it didn't feel crazy.Both sides stepped back. A truce. A temporary ceasefire.Izek dragged the charmed Victor away. Ravens descended to pick at the scorched remains of Urihorn's panther.When we finally reached the Wizards of Wine, the Martikovs welcomed us like family returning from war. Dinner was warm, loud, and painfully normal—until Danika reminded us of a truth Barovia never lets you forget:“Barovia has only one ruler.”The table fell silent. And in that silence, someone noticed something impossible.Urihorn—our halfling ranger, our loyal friend—did not cast a shadow.In a land ruled by a vampire, a missing shadow isn't a quirk.It's a warning.And that's where Session Twenty-Three ends—not with a battle, but with a question.If Barovia takes pieces of you one at a time…who will you be when it's done?

With their guide, Ernie, providing the information he could about the goings-on at the mine, the information was troubling, and it was clear that the mine was not for the faint of heart. Chantico appears visibly uncomfortable as she has been actively suppressing her magic. Upon further taking a look at Chan, Valen realizes it's not her suppressing her magic so much as it is that her flame has been dimmed, as if she is not feeling herself fully. Eventually, a plan emerges to investigate the depths of the mine further, using Dona riding a polymorphed Ursus as a giant spider, and Thorak using beast sense on him. What they find, or rather what they think they sensed, leaves the three with more questions and uneasiness. Eventually, they briefly reconnect over drinks and attempt to put their heads together to discuss their findings. Bob & Thorak put their heads together and determined that some of the markings they had found correlated with the King in Yellow. That evening, plans are made to set up lodging in one of the abandoned homes, and sleep in shifts to catch any strange activity happening from an adjacent building. Bob would act as bait, and the other party members would swoop in if anything went awry. If only things were that simple. That evening. Upon arriving at Midmount, the party begins investigating a series of strange events. Thorak, disguised as “Snorak” using his hat of disguise, gathers information from the locals under the pretense of being a new foreman. Rumors of a mine explosion and memory issues surface, and as they journey further into town, Thorak continues his ruse to gain access to the city center. They're led by a woman named Sam to Lua Hugh, another foreman. Still, their vague story about missing shipments and lack of documentation gets them quickly dismissed, until Bob's improvisation about searching for a brother elicits Lua's sympathy. She brings them back in privately and offers to help, though she admits she doesn't know how much she truly can.Meanwhile, Valen investigates the area and notices unsettling signs: his reflection shows a black smear on his face, and his hands appear stained with charcoal. Back inside, Lua gives the group some names, but strange happenings continue: Bob finds a pencil in his hand that he doesn't recall taking, and everyone in the group is marked with charcoal without explanation. Dona spots this first, and as they regroup and speak with locals, they learn that such marks began appearing after the mine explosion, linked to something ominously called the “ashen children.” The more they explore, the more markings appear, and no one seems to know how or why.Dona uses Primeval Awareness and senses aberrational presence coming from the mine, while Valen's Detect Thoughts spell picks up nearby minds he cannot locate. Still disguised, “Snorak” presses further into the mine pretending to be an inspector, hoping to piece together the puzzle of the explosion, the missing shipments, the mysterious children, and the rising aberrations. The group starts their day preparing for the voyage to Midmount, with mixed feelings about crossing the ocean. Chan is visibly anxious, running between her room and downstairs, mainly worried about being a fire hazard on a wooden boat. Valen offers his magical flask to ease her nerves. Bob sings a sea shanty from his mentor, Rosco, while Dona expresses her apprehension about traveling by water. Thankfully, Thorak ensures everyone is well-fed with his signature large meals. Upon arrival at the docks, the group is guided by an automaton to their ship, The Voyager, where they meet its warforged captain, Vessel, and a crew of small automatons. As they set sail, Bob privately asks Valen for help meditating to contact his patron. Valen agrees and encourages Bob to speak with Thorak, a cleric, for spiritual guidance.While settling in, Bob attempts his first connection with his patron and feels something stir. Excited, he shares the moment with Valen, who continues practicing with his sword and experimenting with his magical flask. One swig causes him to burp fire, but the next renders him ethereal, unseen but present, leading to concern from the rest of the group. Valen enjoys the new experience, but the others, especially Thorak, decide the flask should be taken from him temporarily. After a heartfelt conversation, Dona returns it with a promise from Valen to use it more mindfully going forward. Meanwhile, Bob dives deeper into his connection with his patron and finds himself submerged in a vision. He senses another presence and questions whether he's being punished for failing to recognize his patron sooner.The next morning, Valen recounts his brief shift into the ethereal plane, noting that while reckless, it was helpful in future encounters. While Bob studies the maps, Chan explores the ship and familiarizes herself with Vessel. Valen and Thorak train together, with Thorak now blindfolded and relying on his familiar Paco to “see,” testing strategies that may come in handy. Bob and Chan reflect on his vision; though she's uncertain how to help, she offers to consult her sister, who's more knowledgeable about such matters. Grateful, Bob thanks her. As the day ends, Vessel informs the party that they are one day away from Midmount.
