Localized journalism played a pivotal role in breaking through the silence and inertia that surrounded the Epstein investigation for years. National outlets often overlooked or downplayed the story, but local reporters—particularly in Florida—kept pushing. The Miami Herald's investigative series “Perversion of Justice” became a turning point, laying bare the sweetheart deal Epstein received and how officials swept his crimes under the rug. By digging into court records, interviewing survivors, and pressing local authorities, these journalists exposed the corruption and failures of law enforcement in a way that reverberated nationally. Survivors later credited these local stories with giving them a voice when no one else would.Localized journalism played a pivotal role in breaking through the silence and inertia that surrounded the Epstein investigation for years. In this episode of the Scaling Japan Podcast, we're joined by Kenneth Jeng, a Japan Startup Ecosystem Veteran and a long-time ecosystem builder who has worked across the U.S. and Japan. This is Part 1 of a two-part series recorded in November 2024 with Kenneth.Kenneth shares hard-hitting insights on what's really holding Japan's startup ecosystem back — from the cultural and structural roadblocks to limited business development capabilities and lingering visa barriers for foreign entrepreneurs. He offers a rare comparison between Japan and the U.S. startup environments, outlining why IPOs in Japan don't function like exits, how the country's high living standards may be dulling entrepreneurial hunger, and why so many promising startups stall before reaching scale. If you're a founder, investor, or policymaker interested in Japan's startup space, this is a must-listen for understanding where things stand and what's starting to change. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we go deeper into founder mindsets, investor culture, and the future of Japan's startup growth.AIM B2B – Integrated Marketing & PR in AsiaThis episode is sponsored by Custom Media, Tokyo's leading integrated marketing and PR agency since 2008, helping global brands expand across Japan and APAC.They can help you with:- Localized storytelling to build trust in Asian markets- Strategic performance marketing for measurable growth- Account‑based marketing (ABM), paid media, GEO, and SEO- HubSpot‑certified CRM & marketing automation- Data‑driven implementation with cultural expertiseLearn more about AIM B2B Show Notes:00:00 – Introduction02:55 – Differences in Ecosystems07:45– Current Narratives and Trends12:38 – IPO in Japan16:27 – Immigration and Visa for Startups in Japan18:57 – Living Standard in Japan for Entrepreneurs26:30 – Pros of Japan Startup Ecosystem31:20 – Venturing and Scaling41:42 – Comparing Growth Rate46:30 – Importance of Business Development & Team51:17 – Scaling in JapanLinks from Guest Appearance:

In Episode 334, Kestrel welcomes Emily Mikhaiel, the cofounder and creative director of Nazeerah, to the show. A clothing brand inspired by the legacy of her grandmother, Nazeerah supports organic and regenerative farming practices to honor Egyptian cotton, and produces locally in Egypt to maintain direct relationships with their suppliers and reduce their carbon footprint. “There really wasn't waste while my father was growing up. Everything was either composted or if it was metal, it was recycled or reused or repurposed. If a garment was no longer wearable, they'd cut it up into strips and weave carpets out of it. And once the carpet was no longer usable, they'd cut it up again and compost it. So using that knowledge and thinking, you know, as a society, we've existed without plastics for millennia. Why can't we return to that and draw inspiration from that in our design?” -Emily SEPTEMBER THEME —WHEN *REGENERATIVE* MEANS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD This week's episode is focused largely on a regenerative approach to making clothes – one that includes thinking about the end of life of the garment at the design process, where organic cotton farming is centered, not only to help maintain soil health, but also to enhance biodiversity and restore carbon to the soil, and where local production is prioritized. Without sounding like a broken record, it's important to acknowledge how this word – regenerative – has undoubtedly become another buzzword that's taken fashion by storm. We've seen countless brands integrate it into their marketing messaging, and it's becoming more and more utilized across the space as the “new way” to talk about building a more sustainable brand.  HOWEVER – it's very key to note that regenerative is by no means a new concept. As we've touched on in past episodes, it is rooted in Indigenous knowledge, in traditional ways of farming and ancestral ways of growing plants and being in conversion with the Earth. This week's guest has deep family ties to cotton and garment making in Egypt. As she shares with us, Egypt has a unique history connected to cotton farming that for generations, was intrinsically linked to the natural rhythms of the Nile River.  Through her brand, she is not only honoring her ancestors' connection to the land, but also supporting farmers who are reclaiming what regenerative cotton farming can look like today.  Nazeerah Website Follow Nazeerah on Instagram

The Project advocates for both a "content and pedagogical revolution" to shift who is perceived as a historian and knowledge creator. The Project is youth-driven, centering young people through Youth Action Boards in various regions of New York, who develop resources for an archive and classroom use. Utilizing oral history, semi-structured interviews, and surveys, the project explores how the absence of AANHPI history impacts youth and aims to create a "living history" that challenges traditional, colonial frameworks of history education. The ultimate goal is to provide a community archive of localized histories to fill educational gaps and inspire revolutionary change.Panel was part of the Association for Asian American Studies 2025 Annual Conference

Dr. Chuck Link is the Executive Chairman of Syncromune, a company developing a novel immunotherapy approach for solid tumors by delivering the therapy into the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes to stimulate a systemic immune response. Their complex drug has four different components with varying levels of activity that activate the immune system and counteract immune suppression. This in situ immunotherapy technology, SYNC-T, was tested in a phase 1 trial for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, which showed high response rates and a favorable safety profile with low rates of serious side effects and minimal autoimmune toxicity.   Chuck explains, "So, SYNC-T is a technology in which you put a needle directly into a tumor that can be done by a urologist in the prostate cancer situation, or by an interventional radiologist. That needle then the tip of it freezes, and does a freeze fracture. Think of a Coke bottle rupturing like in the freezer. And what that does is release the antigens from that patient's own specific tumor. So, it's personalized because the tumor proteins and antigens are used to create a vaccine effect that's released directly from the cancer." "The tumor microenvironment is basically within the tumor itself, and there are immune suppressive mechanisms that the tumor has evolved to protect it from the immune system. I like to think of it as a castle, multiple levels of defense where you have the castle itself, and then you have a castle wall, and then you have a moat, and then an army in front of the wall. So the cancer has multiple immune-suppressive mechanisms that are activated to defeat the immune system, even though cancer has a lot of abnormal, mutated proteins that the immune system should attack and destroy. So what SYNC-T accomplishes is it basically hits solutions for all four of those types of defense simultaneously to make it more difficult for the castle, in this case, the tumor, to protect itself." #Syncromune #Immunotherapy #MetastaticSolidTumors #Cancer #ProstateCancer syncromune.com Download the transcript here
