This one starts out a little differently. Ian Paratore was born and raised in San Francisco, but he's moving away. This week. To Oakland. Ian's dad, Vince Paratore, moved into a Victorian in The Haight in the late-Seventies/early Eighties, and is still there. That's the house Ian grew up in starting roughly 10 years later. Both of his parents are artists and teachers. His dad came to San Francisco from Syracuse, New York, to study photography at SF State. And his mom, Valerie O'Riordan, is from Long Beach in Southern California. She moved to The City to work with ACT (American Conservatory Theater). The house at Page and Clayton is the only place Ian's dad has lived in SF. I asked Ian whether he knows any stories from that house before he was born in the early Nineties. Both his parents being "natural hosts," there were many parties. Nowadays, when his dad is out of town, Ian will sometimes have parties of his own at his dad's place. When he does, he says his dad often offers up stories from back in the day. One involves a party with so many people already inside cramming a hallway, folks had to come and go via the first escape. Back in the day, his dad was a general manager at restaurants like Stars, Donatello, Garibaldi's, and Beach Chalet, which he helped open. Both his parents were big in the San Francisco restaurant scene. We turn to Ian's early life, which he experienced in the mid-Nineties to early 2000s. As a kid, and a kid without a backyard, he spent a lot of time in Golden Gate Park and The Panhandle. He hung out on playgrounds and basketball courts. He adds that "the craziness of Haight Street was just … normal." I ask Ian about Skates on Haight, which I knew from my Eighties/Nineties skateboarding days from ads in magazines like Thrasher. (Marcella, who took photos for this episode and was with us at the table, chimes in at this point.) Ian rattles off some spots from his childhood in The Haight—places like Gus's before it was known as Gus's, an Ethiopian restaurant, and a musical instrument store. In high school, Ian got into visual arts and playing sports—mainly baseball and basketball. By the time he got to college, he played baseball "at a high level," and art fell more or less by the wayside. More on that in Part 2. But during high school, though he took art classes, sports dominated his life. We end Part 1 with Ian rattling off the San Francisco schools he went to. He did a stint at College of San Mateo (CSM) before getting into UC Berkeley, which was the first time he lived outside his childhood home. He had flirted with college on the East Coast before deciding to stay closer to home. Check back Thursday for Part 2 with Ian. And join us tomorrow for a very special, timely bonus episode. Show notes: In this first episode of the start of Drawing Funny's 6th season we get to hear from Memphis native now Wisconsin wordsmith John Jackson Miller about his early years in the M-town from a Batman book signing in the G'town. JJM was recently back in the midsouth to promote the Random House Worlds release of "BATMAN: REVOLUT?ON" (his 2nd Batman novel and follow-up to "BATMAN: RESSURECTION") at the new Barnes & Noble in Germantown, TN. He talks about the '89 Batverse and WWTBD? (what would Tim Burton do?), plus we get to hear John's origin story straight from the writer's mouth and learn how he got from Memphis to Gotham City by way of strange new worlds in a galaxy far, far away! John's childhood sounds very similar to my own, and not just the growing up in and around Memphis parts. We were both named after our fathers who came from large families, and both of our moms were an only child- and knew Elvis back in the day. My wife Nicki and I have known JJM since before she and I were actually officially a couple, and often see him at local book signings, library appearances, and conventions around the mid-south. He was a fixture at MidSouthCon for many years, and is currently on a signing tour where he's been hanging out with some super-folks like "Batman" movie executive producer Michael Uslan at the New York Comic Con, and in a convention green room with "The Flash" star John Wesley Shipp. At this JJM B&N book signing, Nicki and I ran into some friends of ours from MidSouthCon- and the Bluff City Batman! In addition to John's book signing life story audio, I catch you up on some local art scene news including details on the current Mid-South Cartoonists Association "Drawn Of The Dead" art show at Germantown Community Theatre, the group's next game themed art show at the Jewish Community Center in December/January, the MSCA's upcoming monthly dinner gathering at  Garibaldi's Pizza on November 4th, this weekend's Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention and Memphis Japan Fest, and next month's Memphis Zine Fest! Thanks to John Jackson Miller and Barnes & Noble for such a BATASTIC book signing event. I hope they're have JJM back in town again soon. Maybe for a 3rd Bat-book..? We've had "BATMAN: RESSURECTION" and "BATMAN: REVOLUT?ON", so I'm just throwing "BATMAN: RESOLUTION" out there if no one else has used it yet- just sayin'... ;) Hope you all have a safe and Happy Halloween!LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comJohn Jackson Miller – www.farawaypress.com/Random House Worlds – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/Garibaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comMemphis Japan Fest – www.memphisjapanfestival.org/Memphis Comic & Fantasy Con – www.memphiscfc.com/Geek Tank Radio – www.geektankradio.wordpress.com/MidSouthCon – www.midsouthcon.org/Memphis Zine Fest – www.instagram.com/memphis_zine_fest/#midsouthcartoonistsassociation#msca#memphistn#comics#starwars#batman#jjm#johnjacksonmiller#linworkmanart#drawingfunnypodcast#drawingfunny#podperson#staytoonedTheme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen. News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. The Oxford history of Italy, Oxford Univ. In the year 1870, Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck engineers a war to cut France down to size. French Emperor Napoleon III is willing to oblige, and bungles his way into a war against all of Germany. The Franco-Prussian War proves to be more than he – or anyone else – bargained for. Within a few months, Paris will be under siege, proto-Communist rebels will threaten to take over France, and the Italians will invade Rome. And Bismarck, ever the opportunist, will grasp at the opportunity to unify Germany once and for all.   TABLE OF CONTENTS: Chapter One: The Twilight of the French Empire – 00:01:56 Chapter Two: The Ems Dispatch – 00:26:26 Chapter Three: A Blueprint for the Great War – 00:46:34 Chapter Four: Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object – 01:13:48 Chapter Five: The Great Right Turn – 01:55:15 Chapter Six: The Last Bonaparte – 02:21:16 Chapter Seven: The Government of National Defense – 02:47:44 Chapter Eight: The Last Stand of the Papal States – 03:13:36 Chapter Nine: The Defense of the French Republic – 03:35:42 Chapter Ten: The Siege of Paris – 04:02:27 Chapter Eleven: The Dawn of the German Empire – 04:34:01 Chapter Twelve: The Paris Commune – 04:50:50 Chapter Thirteen: The Belle Époque – 05:20:22 Chapter Fourteen: The Future of Italy – 05:47:14 Chapter Fifteen: The Age of Bismarck – 06:08:22   SUBSCRIBE TO RELEVANT HISTORY, AND NEVER MISS AN EPISODE! Is it time to stop the division and back Ange Postecoglou as Forest Manager? To Buy Wolfie A Coffee! Click Here: https://buymeacoffee.com/forestfantv In this heated episode of Forest Fan TV, we dive deep into the swirling rumours and fan frustrations surrounding Ange Postecoglou's tenure as Nottingham Forest manager. With recent reports suggesting Sean Dyche could be the club's first choice to step in if Ange is sacked, the question on every Tricky Trees supporter's mind is: should Forest fans rally behind the Aussie tactician now, or is it time to call for change? We've seen flashes of brilliance under Ange, but the inconsistency has left many questioning if his high-pressing style truly fits the Garibaldi. Join us as we break down the pros, cons, and what it means for our Premier League survival fight. Enter Wolfie – our resident hot-take king – who's sparked massive debate with his latest pivot. After previously calling for Ange's head, has Wolfie flip-flopped to declare "Ange IN" following those Dyche whispers? We unpack the timeline: from Wolfie's early criticisms to his sudden about-face, exploring if it's a genuine shift born of desperation or just opportunistic banter. Is this the redemption arc Forest fans have been waiting for, or proof that even our most vocal pundits can waver under pressure? Wolfie's rollercoaster stance has us all reflecting on loyalty in the face of managerial mayhem, and could Douglas Luiz's long-awaited return be the secret sauce swaying Wolfie back to Team Ange? The Brazilian maestro's potential impact on midfield dominance can't be ignored – could his creativity unlock the attacking flair Ange craves? We speculate on how Luiz fits into the puzzle and whether it's enough to turn the tide. What do YOU think, Reds? Drop your thoughts on Ange in the comments below – back him, bin him, or somewhere in between? Mysterious James and I emerge from our three-night Cannon Beach odyssey to accidentally unlock our cycling superpowers, turning a modest Tillamook target into a shocking 52-mile triumph. It's the usual stuff: ice cream as performance enhancer, and the stunning revelation that hydration might actually matter. But with tomorrow's weather turning and our schedule still behind, will this newfound confidence carry us forward or set us up for an epic crash? Key Highlights Morning departure from Cannon Beach with sunny weather (rain expected tomorrow) Arch Cape Tunnel challenge - one of the less enjoyable parts of the Oregon coast, but navigated successfully with proper lighting and safety gear Strong riding performance despite variable winds - tailwinds providing good speed, headwinds creating challenges around rivers and inlets Confidence boost as both riders felt strong throughout the day, a marked improvement from their struggles the previous day leaving Beaverton Hydration success - Tim credits focused hydration efforts for dramatically improved performance Cape Lookout State Park arrival - described as potentially "the best camp on the coast" with individual pod-like clearings and ocean wave sounds   Route Details Departed Cannon Beach early morning Climbed through Arch Cape Tunnel to Manzanita (20-mile checkpoint) Continued south past Garibaldi and Bay City to Tillamook Extended ride from Tillamook to Cape Lookout State Park Riders met at Safeway in Tillamook for resupply (chicken strips and ice cream)   Camp Review: Cape Lookout State Park Pros: - Excellent location directly on the coast - Individual pod-like campsites with perfect flat ground - Beautiful ocean wave sounds - Great overall facilities Cons: - Long walk to bathhouse/showers - Charging stations only have USB-A ports (no USB-C or standard 110V outlets)   Tomorrow's Plan Targeting Beverly Beach as the main goal South Beach as potential stretch goal (though 70 miles seems too ambitious) Weather forecast: overcast and cool - ideal "James and Tim weather" Still working out end-of-week logistics due to being behind schedule   Technology MVP Perplexity AI proving invaluable for route planning and logistics, including confirming their direct route choice over the longer ACA (Adventure Cycling Association) scenic route.   Statistics Miles Biked: 52 Times Tim arrived before James: 2 (hmm… that's not normal.

Professor Lucy Riall explains Garibaldi's mastery of revolutionary war by harnessing military, political and populist levers of power to become a father of modern Italy. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was one of the world's greatest revolutionaries, leading resistance movements with irregular armies such as the Ragamuffins and the Red Shirts in Latin America and Europe. A crucial figure of 19th century liberalism and nationalism, he inspired millions. Che Guevara claimed that he was the only hero the world needs. As one of the fathers of modern Italy, Garibaldi was the Risorgimento's Sword, to Count Cavour's Brain and Giuseppe Mazzini's Soul. Untrained as a soldier and often over-matched by his opponents, he nevertheless achieved victories against the French and Austrian Armies, the Papal States and in Sicily. Perhaps as impressively, he maintained the effectiveness of irregular forces in numerous retreats that might, under a lesser commander, have lost the morale of his citizen fighters against professional armies. Historian AJP Taylor described Garibaldi thus: 'He evoked from the people, and even from the politicians, a personal devotion almost without parallel in modern history; . . . and he showed himself the greatest general that Italy has ever produced.' Professor Lucy Riall is a leading expert on modern Italy. She has written extensively on Italy's formation, as well as on Giuseppe Garibaldi. She is currently at the European University institute in Florence and a Visiting Professor at the National Museum of Ethnology in Japan.

In part three of his series on the unifications of Germany and Italy, Dan talks about the turbulent 1850s and early 60s. In Germany, this is a time of mass industrialization. With the regional economy growing at a record pace, Prussia and Austria engage in saber-rattling diplomacy over the future of the German Confederation.   Meanwhile, the new King of Piedmont-Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II, aims to do what his father could not: conquer all of Italy. Taking advantage of Austrian weakness – and a burgeoning alliance with France – he and three other men will engineer a revolution that unites the Apennine Peninsula for the first time since the Roman Empire.   TABLE OF CONTENTS: Chapter One: The German Question – 00:04:22 Chapter Two: The Erfurt Union – 00:30:15 Chapter Three: The (Austrian) Empire Strikes Back – 00:42:24 Chapter Four: Enter Bismarck – 01:03:59 Chapter Five: Goodbye, Friedrich Wilhelm – 01:32:59 Chapter Six: Repression in Lombardy – 01:41:19 Chapter Seven: Enter Camillo Cavour – 01:51:20 Chapter Eight: Enter Victor Emmanuel – 02:04:32 Chapter Nine: The Crimean War – 02:17:48 Chapter Ten: Engineering a Revolution – 02:39:34 Chapter Eleven: The War for Northern Italy – 03:05:02 Chapter Twelve: The Expedition of the Thousand – 03:34:34 Chapter Thirteen: The Dictator of Sicily – 04:14:24 Chapter Fourteen: The Conquest of Southern Italy – 04:28:49 Chapter Fifteen: The Proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy – 04:51:04 Chapter Sixteen: Rome and the Risorgimento – 05:13:43   SUBSCRIBE TO RELEVANT HISTORY, AND NEVER MISS AN EPISODE!
