Show notes: In this episode I recall Nicki and my busy Saturday in the midsouth. First we drove up to east Memphis to be on 98.1 The Max's "Geek Tank Radio" show (Ep. 7.05.2025) with fellow geeks Joe Thordardson, Allan Gilbreath, Max, and guest geek and voice actor Scott J. Carroll. We talked toons and discussed the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and con community in the Memphis area. They put on the annual Memphis Comic and Fantasy Con which returns to the Memphis Hilton Hotel this November 1st. The MSCA will be set up at this one day event. After the recording session we jumped back in the car and headed up to Comics Universe in Jackson, TN to see our buddy Mike Norton. We had a great time talking with Mike and long time comic shop owner "Lethal Rethel" Miller. I got a few books signed by Mike including my copy of "The Rock Gods Of Jackson, TN". Norton's first issue of “Krypto: The Last Dog Of Krypton” has hit stores, and his Image Comics series “Revival” is now a live action TV series on SyFy! The show stars Melanie Scrofano from “Wynonna Earp”, and can be seen on the SyFy channel on Thursday nights, or streaming on Peacock and YouTube. And don't forget that there's still a little bit of time left to back Mike's new “Battlepug” book on Kickstarter. Mike will be back at the Memphis Comic Expo/DonnieCon in September, and I'll have a table at the show as well.Nicki and I stopped by The Cellar comic shop on our way home. I've got some sketchcards for sale there, and there are copies of the MSCA's “The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy” zine available there, too. There's lots going on this weekend and I've got details including Thrill Comics' Ryan Ladner "Memphis VS Zombies" comic signing at Loots Collectibles, Good Groceries birthday sale, Abandoned Antiques collector show, ongoing MSCA art show at Playhouse On The Square, and the upcoming SatArtDays at Casey's Art Box.“Stay tooned” for more details!LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comGaribaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comMemphis Comic and Fantasy Con – www.memphiscfc.com/Geek Tank Radio – www.geektankradio.wordpress.com/Mike Norton – www.ihatemike.com“The Legendary Ladies Podcast” w/Tim Seely – www.thelegendaryladiespodcast.com/Memphis Sports & Event Center– www.themsec.com/Memphis Comic Expo/MCX – www.memphiscomicexpo.com/Comics Universe in Jackson, TN – www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61561815906384Casey's Art Box – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/The Cellar Tabletop Games And Comics – www.comiccellaronline.com/Thrill Comics/"Memphis VS Zombies" – www.thrillcomics.com/Aaron B. Alfio Caruso"Incursori del re"La vera storia della X Mas.Neri Pozza Editorewww.neriopozza.itC'è un prima e c'è un dopo, nella storia della X flottiglia Mas della Regia Marina Italiana, e lo spartiacque è l'8 settembre 1943, quando il comandante Junio Valerio Borghese raduna i suoi incursori e annuncia di volersi schierare al fianco della Repubblica sociale e dei nazisti. Professor Lucy Riall explains Garibaldi's mastery of revolutionary war by harnessing military, political and populist levers of power to become a father of modern Italy. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was one of the world's greatest revolutionaries, leading resistance movements with irregular armies such as the Ragamuffins and the Red Shirts in Latin America and Europe. A crucial figure of 19th century liberalism and nationalism, he inspired millions. Che Guevara claimed that he was the only hero the world needs. As one of the fathers of modern Italy, Garibaldi was the Risorgimento's Sword, to Count Cavour's Brain and Giuseppe Mazzini's Soul. Untrained as a soldier and often over-matched by his opponents, he nevertheless achieved victories against the French and Austrian Armies, the Papal States and in Sicily. Perhaps as impressively, he maintained the effectiveness of irregular forces in numerous retreats that might, under a lesser commander, have lost the morale of his citizen fighters against professional armies. Historian AJP Taylor described Garibaldi thus: 'He evoked from the people, and even from the politicians, a personal devotion almost without parallel in modern history; . . . and he showed himself the greatest general that Italy has ever produced.' Professor Lucy Riall is a leading expert on modern Italy. She has written extensively on Italy's formation, as well as on Giuseppe Garibaldi. She is currently at the European University institute in Florence and a Visiting Professor at the National Museum of Ethnology in Japan.

I got to talk toons with local artists including Ryan Ladner, Shane Luttrell, That Katie Jones, Peter Melonas, Dr. Kevin Thorn, MSCA president Kevin L. We loved getting t meet the amazing animals from the Soft Landings of Tennessee waterfowl rescue, and the awesomely chill pup from the GameOver Arcade in Southaven, MS. We also got to meet actors Reb Brown/Captain America, Sean Patrick Flanery/Young Indiana Jones, and legendary voice actor Billy West/Ren & Stimpy. (You can see pics on our MSCA Facebook page.)The space was huge, clean, and had great lighting and A/C. There's plenty of room for this con to expand for next year. The Memphis weather was definitely frightful outside, but it was dry and comfortable inside. This fall Memphis Comic Expo will be at this same event center in September. In 1861, the kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, unifying the various Italian states under one national banner. But what did it mean to be 'Italian' in the mid-19th century? How did the pope react to the concept of a united Italy? And why did so many British women fall in love with Garibaldi? In conversation with Spencer Mizen, historian David Laven answers listener questions on the campaign to unify Italy: the Risorgimento. In part three of his series on the unifications of Germany and Italy, Dan talks about the turbulent 1850s and early 60s. In Germany, this is a time of mass industrialization. With the regional economy growing at a record pace, Prussia and Austria engage in saber-rattling diplomacy over the future of the German Confederation.   Meanwhile, the new King of Piedmont-Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II, aims to do what his father could not: conquer all of Italy. Taking advantage of Austrian weakness – and a burgeoning alliance with France – he and three other men will engineer a revolution that unites the Apennine Peninsula for the first time since the Roman Empire.   TABLE OF CONTENTS: Chapter One: The German Question – 00:04:22 Chapter Two: The Erfurt Union – 00:30:15 Chapter Three: The (Austrian) Empire Strikes Back – 00:42:24 Chapter Four: Enter Bismarck – 01:03:59 Chapter Five: Goodbye, Friedrich Wilhelm – 01:32:59 Chapter Six: Repression in Lombardy – 01:41:19 Chapter Seven: Enter Camillo Cavour – 01:51:20 Chapter Eight: Enter Victor Emmanuel – 02:04:32 Chapter Nine: The Crimean War – 02:17:48 Chapter Ten: Engineering a Revolution – 02:39:34 Chapter Eleven: The War for Northern Italy – 03:05:02 Chapter Twelve: The Expedition of the Thousand – 03:34:34 Chapter Thirteen: The Dictator of Sicily – 04:14:24 Chapter Fourteen: The Conquest of Southern Italy – 04:28:49 Chapter Fifteen: The Proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy – 04:51:04 Chapter Sixteen: Rome and the Risorgimento – 05:13:43   SUBSCRIBE TO RELEVANT HISTORY, AND NEVER MISS AN EPISODE! Ojai: Talk of the Town

We sit down with author Howard Smith to discuss his latest novel, "Viva Verdi & Violetta." This immersive historical tale dives deep into the life and struggles of Giuseppe Verdi, his muse Giuseppina Strepponi, and the revolutionary fervor of the Italian Risorgimento of the mid-19th century. Told through the watchful, and witty, mind of his close friend, a restaurateur and retired opera singer, the novel brings to life Verdi's rise as a composer, the artistic and political battles of 19th-century Italy, and the resistance against Austrian occupation. Smith takes us behind the curtain, revealing Verdi's encounters with freedom fighters like Garibaldi and the dramatic cultural shifts that shaped his operatic masterpieces. There's also a lot of about food and culture in this transformative time. Tune in for a captivating discussion on music, history, and the timeless power of storytelling!
