Bill Ryder-Jones, Anna Calvi and Poppy Hankin discuss the first piece of music that really affected them, how their writing has changed as they've grown older, and how much they're willing to give people control over their music.Bill Ryder-Jones is from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. Since then he's pursued a solo career, writing his own albums and film scores, as well as producing and playing on records for other artists including the Last Shadow Puppets, Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith, the Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. He's recently released his fifth solo album Iechyd Da (which translates as "good health" in Welsh). Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.

What an exciting week (month, year?) in gaming! Elden Ring has finally landed and the whole gang has shown up to talk about this epic new chapter in the From Software catalog; Not to mention the potential impact it could have on the future of open-world game design. We focus largely on design philosophy and mechanics but still manage to squeeze in a few fun anecdotes from our playthroughs thus far. While Elden Ring dominates the discussion, Brad also shares his thoughts on the demo for Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Nick and Ed delve into their early impressions of the OTHER huge open world game that launched recently: Horizon: Forbidden West.

Petra Kolber is not only an author and motivational speaker, but also so much more. She's an innovator of fitness trends in the days before social media that have been built upon for boutique popularity today. In this episode, you'll hear from one of the most genuine, open and emotive guests we've had on the Escape Your Limits podcast. Through work with Reebok, Equinox and more, she's built her brand and become the voice of positivity and overcoming anxiety for anyone, documenting her insight in keynote speeches and books such as The Perfection Detox: Tame Your Inner Critic, Live Bravely, and Unleash Your Joy. Watch the full episode on YouTube – https://youtu.be/OGbOG0UZG-E From growing up in West Kirby, near Liverpool, Petra found freedom to get out of the house in developing a dance background that would serve as a profession before her move into fitness. While working as a cruise ship dancer, her responsibilities also included teaching Jane Fonda classes on the side. These were the days before step had taken off, and Petra followed her passion for movement to the US. Petra created organic step workouts to live drumming – a class that she named “London Beat.” Her exciting, risk-taking experiences drew international attention and paved the way for the birth of the boutique classes that we know today. She was taken on by Reebok to star in video workouts and television appearances until moving on to build her own brand with a similar approach of instruction. Through this, Petra has won countless awards including Fitness Instructor of the Year, Best Female Presenter of the Year, Most Likely to Succeed, and more. With the trends of HIIT and tabata coming in, Petra pivoted in her career to step off the stage and figure out how to do things she loved while still staying relevant to the needs of her audience. Today, Petra's approach is all about finding healthy pride and positivity; being aware of your own accomplishments without the ago, while still nurturing your own personal growth. Her purpose is to guide you on what she calls the longest distance you will ever travel: from your head to your heart. Petra's book, The Perfection Detox, is available from http://petrakolber.com/book-the-perfection-detox Episode Highlights - How to stay relevant throughout your career, and pivot your position to align with your truth at any stage of your life. The importance of mindset when it comes to setting goals and achieving your dream, without losing happiness and joy. Why anyone can still not feel successful even if they've reached professional heights they would have never previously dreamed of. How to deal with failure, what failure is and how to dig down to a granular level in order to find out what you've learned along the way. Discover what your pain points are and how to overcome them, whether it's through coaching, mental processes or enlightenment by reading about the experiences of others. How negativity bias affects us long term, while others will have more likely than not forgotten about the point we're concerned about. Join Matthew Januszek in conversation with Petra Kolber…
The song this week is called "On The River" which is where I spent Tuesday afternoon in my Laser Dinghy....I like to get out on the River Dee at West Kirby with just me,the breeze, and the seals....paradise......we are very lucky to have this sailing facility here on Wirral...and if the tide is out we can use the large Marine Lake. This country is becoming like a bad comedy show.......our wonderful Prime Minister calls for a snap general election for no reason whatsoever and falls flat on her face...with a collection of M.P.s seeing their cushy job vanish overnight with Teresa nowhere to be seen....then we have Mr.Corbyn jumping up and down in celebration even though he LOST the election.. I watched a chap called Roy Larmer who was interviewed on the morning news programme....this was the chap who took on the terrorists during the recent London attacks....he was badly injured with wounds to his arms and neck but thankfully survived...he was talking about his experience which was very moving (despite the stupid question from Suzanne Reid)....it turns out that this hero is homeless and has no job....I really felt sorry for him....apparently a fund has been set up and up to now has raised 50 grand....which is all very well but considering this is ONE FIFTH of the fee Tony Blair gets for one after dinner speech.....PEOPLE ARE STILL ALIVE BECAUSE OF MR.LARMER!!!... Richard Hammond has had another near fatal crash....what an absolute idiot....and has "apologised' to his wife and family...it is...except some of them aren't as lucky as Hammond...and how much is this ego trip going to cost the health service?... There was a memorial service for Ronnie Corbett which was attended by lots of celebrities....to me he was a REAL comedian...and the sketches with Ronnie Barker were pure genius.......and finally Adam West also passed away... the ONLY Batman ... I actually went to his book signing in Liverpool and got the chance to shake his hand and thank him for all the good work he did in Gotham City....cool or what.
