Fitness Career Mastery Podcast: Group Fitness | Personal Training | Studio & Gym Business
Episode Description & Show Notes: This week, a fitness influencer went viral for saying people over 200 pounds shouldn't be allowed in Pilates class—and that instructors with a “gut” shouldn't be teaching. Yes, she deleted the video. But the damage was done. Thousands of people agreed with her. This is the fitness industry we're still up against. And in this episode, we're not just pushing back—we're burning the whole narrative down. We break down 13 research-backed reasons why building your fitness brand around body transformation isn't just unethical—it's lazy, outdated, and costing you money. What we cover: Why transformation-based branding leads to low retention and high churn How extrinsic motivation backfires (and what the neuroscience says) The impact of shame-based messaging on mental health How to actually build emotional loyalty that fuels long-term growth Why purpose-driven brands scale better—and feel better This episode is part reckoning, part guidebook. We brought the science, the lived experience, and the tools to help you build a brand that doesn't just sell workouts—but moves people. Whether you've already left the old model behind or are still working your way out of it—this one's for you. If this message resonates, share it. Post it. Text it to your team. Forward it to another studio owner. This is how we shift the industry—together. Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Melissa Davis, and have a conversation with her about how she grew from running Port Shopping Programs onboard cruise ships to providing Port Shopping information and running to all cruisers as a private entrepreneur. After running shopping programs on Crystal Cruises, Regent, Oceania, Viking, and Marella, and launching the first and only onshore shopping program on Viking River Cruises, Melissa decided to create an online recommended and guaranteed shopping program for all cruisers featuring Cruise Port Maps, and a long list of fabulous recommended and guaranteed retailers and brands in each port, and tried and tested attractions and best beaches. Melissa is the number one Online Port Shopping GuideAfter working with several amazing cruise lines and cruising a lot herself, Melissa was surprised to see not all Cruise lines provide accurate Port Maps when the ships arrive in port. She decided to put her Cruise Port Insider Secrets online so everyone could access it. Melissa's cruise ship career started as a Fitness Instructor for Steiner Transocean on the old Holland America Line Noordam. She couldn't wait for time off in port to explore the ports, and submerging herself in the culture and meeting wonderful people along the way. To this day she has artifacts, indigenous souvenirs and jewelry and art from these wonderful experiences. When a position came up as a Shopping Lecturer she jumped at the chance and for the next 7 years, she went to various cruise lines running lectures and helping cruise ship guests navigate the ports of call. Now Melissa has all these amazing Cruise Port Maps, and will tell you how to get yours free, as well as shop for wonderful products from each destination or snag a souvenir for a loved one back home. I have found one of my favorite motivational speakers ever—in my morning workout classes! Casey Gilbert, Fitness Instructor and Online Coach, works with individuals to get them “Un-stuck” and back on track with their fitness, nutrition, and mindset. Casey has literally made me a more mentally strong person, leading me to be a better mom, wife, friend, and person. I am so inspired by the way he can motivate people that I asked him to come on the podcast and give us some insight into how he does this and how we can take some of it for ourselves and share it with our kids. As someone who has battled with anxiety and depression, Casey also uses his social media platforms to de-stigmatize mental health (especially in boys/men) and makes sure to show people that what you see on the outside is not the full story. We also talk about childhood core beliefs, and what kids really need to hear from their parents. There are so many great nuggets in the episode and I'm certain you will leave more inspired and ready to face challenges. Let's dive in! IG: @CaseyfGilbert http://Caseygilbertfitness.com

Strength training is one of the best exercises you can do for weight loss and your overall health, but it can be hard to sift through all the info online about it. In this episode, I'm interviewing Dr. Payton Busker, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and the Head of Content and Fitness Instructor at Evlo Fitness! Dr. Busker is walking us through the basics of training, including how to get started, what the benefits of strength training are, and the truth behind the functional training trend. Physical therapists have extensive training and knowledge of anatomy, helping you to prevent and/or recover from injuries. The general personal training space is not nearly as regulated and personal trainers might not have that same knowledge. When you build muscle mass, you're actively combatting the natural muscle loss that comes with aging. Not only will your physique improve, but you'll also decrease your likelihood of falls as you get older, decrease loss of bone density, and increase the calories you burn in a day without tons of cardio. If you're just starting out with strength training and feel a little bit intimidated, start super small. Look for simple exercises that focus on one muscle group at a time (rather than compound movements), and start with body weight or 5 lb. dumbbells 1-3 times per week. Hi! I'm Illa (MS, RDN) and I am a Registered Dietitian who provides weight loss coaching for millennials. Mental health is one of the biggest challenges teachers face. They struggle with feeling stuck in a niche field while also battling bad habits that have crept into their lives. In this episode, Ali and JoDee sit down with Braegan Padley, an attorney turned fitness professional and owner of the micro bakery, Baked By Braegs. Together, we will discuss the career dissatisfaction that can occur and choosing mental health and personal happiness over a steady but unfulfilling career path. Cue the kazoo and maybe some celebratory fireworks.Season 2 is coming to an end. Can you believe we've been at this for nearly a year? And seriously, dry your eyes because season 3 is just around the corner (Helloooo Spring 2024).But before I go, I am gonna spill the tea on how I ended up spending 10 years in business with Fit Feels Good, a milestone I've all but glossed over. [Dude, celebrate those milestones. Big and small. They were once dreams, and look at you—you freaking did it!]My spiel goes way further back than 10 years, all the way to 2001, when I took my first fitness instructor class, passed (thank you, generous instructor), and failed up with shitty aerobics class after shitty aerobics class. And as I collected fitness cert, after fitness cert I landed myself as a bootcamp instructor, eventually going rogue and morphing into the very first version of Fit Feels Good. (If you want more, my friend, you're gonna have to listen to the ep).So much goodness came from that little bootcamp—even my first book, Healthy as Fuck. I couldn't be more grateful, but don't get it twisted; this episode features the highlights. Growth is not linear; it's plateaus and tiny climbs up a hill and a little step down and back up again. But through that growth, I learned 5 things that are EVERYTHING in business and life. Be awesome all the time. Thinking with your ego will F$%& you. Let yourself suck and move on. Do different shit.Community is everything. You can find out why each of those little (okay, not so little) lessons is so important by listening to the full freaking episode!!!Now, I'm saying see ya later dudes…I'll see you in the spring. Oh, and one last thing, what do YOU wanna see next season? What's Inside:Oonagh's journey through the fitness business, the sparknotes version. What made Fit Feels Good successful?5 top tips and lessons learned over a decade.Season 3… what's next?WOO! I don't know about you, but we have been taught for our entire lives to eat less and do more exercise if you want to stay fit and lose weight. and girl...we've taken that shit to heart! You will love what our guest today, Sarah Thomas, says about stepping into this chapter in life and looking at the years ahead as a clean slate. But, we are not math equations. we are more complex and other things like hormones, metabolism and stress all impact our ability to lose weight. Make it a "feast" day...not a "cheat" day. Ensure you build into your lifestyle the ability to engage socially and enjoy life. This phase of life is like a new beginning or a blank slate. After being a fitness instructor for nearly two decades and a mom for almost that long, add entrepreneur to this woman's resume as she wants you to glove up for some boxing group workouts to get in shape! This all comes years after she beat cancer. And she's got some advice to help you get moving. (2:53) Helena Coates has been leading group fitness classes since 2005. She talks about why she's so passionate about being in the gym and helping others...wanting to look a certain way, enjoying the community, but also the way fitness makes her feel through the ups and downs of life. The goal: make people feel comfortable coming to the gym. Why are people motivated to work out or unmotivated? She gives a list. (11:00) Facing stage 4 cancer - spreading in her body - in her early 40s, Helena beat it but then just finishing a workout was extremely difficult, after being a gym rat since she was 13. This mom of 3 also said the cancer battle was mental too. (17:32) Now, she and her husband have bought 4 franchises of Rumble Boxing in Alabama, the latest one in Auburn. What happens in this boutique fitness studio? She gives the details. It includes gloves, "rounds" during the group workout, fun music, and the opportunity to take frustration out on a soft bag. It's part of changing trends in the fitness industry. (28:28) This fitness guru also is very involved in many organizations, nonprofits in Columbus GA, chairing some boards. She's involved in Uptown Columbus Inc which just brought the international kayaking competition to the rapids of the Chattahoochee River (called canoeing overseas). What kind of strength and endurance do kayakers doing tricks need? She also talks about affecting change through action, being part of teams in the community to help make a difference. (37:50) Faith also drives our decisions to make positive changes in the world around us, a desire that was sparked for her while attending BYU. Helena talks about it being a moral compass for her, setting priorities straight, her faith helping her make decisions, wanting to be a better person, and looking at fitness holistically. (45:45) We also dive into her being a certified scuba diver, an adventurous hobby allowing her to do some shark dives and also see some amazing things underwater. Hiking and other fitness, she points out, can also open doors to some fascinating experiences, views. (52:34) I close out the episode in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! I've literally been waiting for this episode since June when Christine Conti won the prestigious IDEA 2023 Fitness Instructor of the Year in Los Angeles, CA. Yes, I had to wait to record this one so I could be LIVE at the Jersey Shore with my fellow Brick, NJ, fit-fam friend in her podcast studio (Two Fit Crazies & a Microphone). This episode could easily be called “2 Fire-breathing dragons (literally) and a microphone” and you will see WHY during the show. Christine Conti has one heckuva story that epitomizes her “Yes You Can” mentality, attitude, and brand. After receiving a life-changing diagnosis at age 30, this former investment banker and English teacher first transformed her life…and now she transforms others. She's a chronic disease specialist, a best-selling author, a keynote speaker, and life-transformer. She truly is a woman of IMPACT and she's determined to show the world that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Here is specifically what I cover on this week's IMPACT SHOW: A walk-down memory lane from our cherished memories in Brick, NJ (both of our hometown's), including an interesting story when we first met and how that was part of Christine's journey to leave teaching. Hey, it's not my fault! ☺ We talk about Christine's journey, a truly inspiring and mind-blowing ascent, going from a career in investment banking to teaching, then finding her way to the Fit-Pro life! And now she's a world-recognized chronic disease wellness specialist, author, speaker, podcaster, IRONMAN, and a guide for athletes with diseases and disabilities. Why does she believe in the mantra “Yes, you can” and lives by it every day. We go through the moment in her life, her “Come to Jesus” moment, and how she, like all of us, got through challenging periods where she questioned her sanity, thinking she's crazy, but how that led her to her true purpose. A reminder that only the “crazies” can change the world! We talked about her best-selling book, SPLIT-SECOND COURAGE. What does that mean? That is “your ability to make a choice at a split second and not think back, not regret it, not hesitate, not balk. You've had enough experiences, you know how to handle the repercussions of the decision you make. You have the coping mechanisms, you have the techniques in place so that whatever decision you make, you're going to handle it.” Christine's mental toughness is a force to reckon with - she's competed in Ironman races, a 100-mile race, and many other endurance and fitness events. Where that comes from? Why she and her co-host Brian Prendergast have such a good time on their podcast, “Two Fit-Crazies & a Microphone. What's next for Christine Conti? I had a blast doing this in-person interview at the Jersey Shore. It was truly awesome to be “home” and inspiring to connect with Christine and share her story with you. I want to help you feel free from guilt, shame, negativity, judging and even holding yourself back. I'm going to do that by having you ask yourself one simple question, “What are you making it mean?” Topics discussed: Circumstances are factual, what you make them mean determines how you feel If the person working out next to you is giving it 110% you could choose to let it motivate you or intimidate you If you are stuck in comparison and judgment, you aren't free This can apply to food choices, business comparisons, weighing more than you expected Choose to evaluate and think on purpose See if there is another way to approach the thought process that gives you more freedom Even if something seems negative you don't have to make it mean something bad to you Links/Resources Mentioned: Collagen/CBD: https://meaganfitzgerald.greencompassglobal.com 1:1 Coaching Info: https://meagan-fitzgerald.mykajabi.com/1-1-coaching The Set: https://meaganfitzgerald.arketa.fit Connect with Meagan: Website: https://meaganfitzgerald.com/ Instagram: @megfitz.gerald
