Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. 25 years ago, the Toronto and Canadian music landscape was turned on its ear with the release of The Russian Futurists' internationally acclaimed debut, The Method of Modern Love. The album is an unabashed confession of romance built on a bedrock of thrift-store toy keyboards and cheap guitars recorded on a porta studio. The Method of Modern Love won fans in R.E.M's Peter Buck, former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, and filmmaker Jason Lee. The Magnetic Fields' first two albums, Distant Plastic Trees and The Wayward Bus, were the template for The Russian Futurists and a change in the direction of Canadian indie music!
Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall of The WAEVE delve into the creation of their sophomore album City Lights, a listening experience filled with sharp musical edges and a deep sense of urgency. The conversation explores their collaboration with producer James Ford, and the thematic undercurrents of their work, from the city's dark underbelly to the intimacy of family life.
IT'S THE FINAL EPISODE OF 2024! Join Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose's Keith Creighton as they wrap up an incredible year of music! In this jam-packed episode, Ted and Keith dive into their favorite songs and albums of 2024—not with a ranked list, but with thematic categories that make for a thoughtful and entertaining retrospective. In the first segment, Keith and Ted talk about bigger music trends like: -- The deluge of streaming content. -- The impact of AI on music creation -- and how Spotify reaps the profits from these non-human-created songs. -- The importance of human creativity in cultural expressions like music. Breakthroughs and Debuts Keith talks up the music by and film about Kneecap -- a hip-hop trio whose raps are entirely in Galic. Their current album Fine Art is available now. Fat Dog also tops Keith's breakthroughs and debuts this year. If you're into the early Ministry and that whole industrial genre, you'll love Woof by Fat Dog. Finally, The Waeve, a UK duo featuring singer-songwriters Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall. Keith said that if he did rank his albums this year, City Lights by The Waeve would top his list. Ted's Single Play picks are: "The Flood" by Allie Sandt. If you're a fan of Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, or Madison Cunningham, Allie's music is a must-listen. With songwriting that reflects the depth and wisdom of an old soul, Allie weaves timeless influences into a sound that's uniquely her own. Her heartfelt lyrics and melodic craftsmanship show incredible promise, and Ted is rooting for her career to take off— because she truly deserves it. The second song is As For The Future's track "The Mob" -- a sly, samba-infused commentary on populism that's as counter-cultural as it is catchy. If you're a fan of Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 or were hooked on Swing Out Sister back in 1987, this song will strike a chord. With its smooth grooves and clever lyrics, "The Mob" blends nostalgia with a fresh, modern edge—proof that As For The Future knows how to make a bold musical statement. Another UK Invasion The Last Dinner Party is a UK band that formed during COVID-19. Surprisingly, before they had a single out, they opened for The Rolling Stones. The Last Dinner Party is what Keith called a total "buzz band" that entertained the public and press with their live shows, fashion, and visual style. Their album, Prelude To Ecstasy did deliver the goods -- as it were -- and lived up to its hype. Irish shoegaze band NewDad, which Keith describes as "very sweet, tender, dark, shoegazing music," reminds him of Lush -- which made him spin the album many times since its release. And while Brigitte Calls Me Baby are not from the UK (they are from Chicago), Keith connected with their music because their style reminds him of The Smiths crossed with Elvis Presley. Their debut album is The Future Is Our Way Out. Ted's sort of Single Play picks for this segment are: A Planet LP favorite! Ward White's "Continuity" is a masterclass in wit, quirky storytelling, and exceptional musicianship. The opening line is irresistibly catchy—it sneaks into your head and stays there, a sure sign the song is working its magic. Ward's sharp sense of humor shines throughout, making "Continuity" both clever and captivating. It's a standout track that showcases his unique charm and talent. Though Ward is not from the UK, he sure sounds like he could be -- kind of like the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. It Leads to This by The Pineapple Thief has been Ted's most-listened-to album of 2024—and for good reason. He was hooked after seeing them live in San Francisco on December 9th. While he admits to unfamiliarity with their older work, It Leads to This completely won him over. It balances heavy guitar riffs with a meditative, Pink Floyd-like, immersive, and introspective vibe. It might not be for everyone, but if atmospheric, thoughtful rock is your thing, It Leads to This is absolutely worth a listen. New Power Pop When it comes to power pop, think The Knack's "My Sharona," or Rick Springfield, and Cheap Trick. But what's when it comes to power pop in 2024 sometimes what's old is new again. Keith recommends a band that opened for The Beatles during the final tour and shared the same manager. That band is The Cyrkle -- whose unusual spelling was suggested by John Lennon. Their 2024 release on Big Stir Records is called Revival, and it's among Keith's most-played albums this year. Fun fact: Band member Tom Dawes (alas, he died in 2007) was a successful jingle writer after The Cyrkle disbanded. He wrote "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz" for Alka-Seltzer, which ran in their ads from 1975-1980. Another power pop gem is The Half-Cubes, whose album Pop Treasures is a carefully curated album of cover songs that mine some tracks from 10cc, OMD, Del Amitri, and Trashcan Sinatras. Ted's Single Play picks are: Kula Shaker's "Indian Record Player" is a catchy pop anthem that seamlessly blends Western pop music sensibilities with a nostalgic nod to the golden age of Bollywood in the lyrics. Check out their latest release, Natural Magick. Galantis, David Guetta, and 5 Seconds of Summer team up for "Lighter," a feel-good anthem that's pure pop perfection. Clocking in at just 2:52, the song is packed with infectious hooks and an upbeat vibe that'll have you dancing from start to finish. It doesn't overstay its welcome or try to be overly complicated—it's simply a joyful, high-energy track with a great beat that's impossible to resist. Sometimes, all you need is a song like this to brighten your day and get you moving. Best Comebacks Keith's first comeback record is from The Libertines, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade -- which is an astonishing comeback considering the substance abuse problems of some of the band members, like vocalist and guitarist Pete Doherty. Check out the single "Run, Run, Run" which excels at presenting what a good pub band sounds like when they are sober. Guess who's back? The Zutons! Best known for writing Amy Winehouse's most famous cover song ("Valarie"), their latest album The Big Decider is such a strong album from a band that was on hiatus for years that most folks probably thought they broke up for good. Nope. Ted's picks center on bigger names like The Cure's Songs Of A Lost World. While the album is light on hooks, it's pretty heavy on misery, which, considering Robert Smith world view is not a surprise. While The Cure's music is not for everyone, those who loved their 1989 release Disintegration will find The Cure's latest album a very familiar experience. Pearl Jam knocked it out of the park with Dark Matter. The title track and the song "Won't Tell" are two that stood out in this incredibly strong collection of songs. Keith notes that a good amount of credit goes to producer Andrews Watt, who has a knack for bringing out the best in older acts like Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Ozzy, and the like. Single Play highlights not related to comebacks: Paper Citizen's "Car Stereo"-- a song dedicated to the importance of friendship in one's life and right up there in Ted's top singles of 2024. Linkin Park's "The Emptiness Machine" is a welcome return to form. Now that they have a new singer, it has brought to the forefront a very 20-something energy that recalls Paramore back in the day. Music Royals While the boys like Kendrick Lamar and Drake dissed each other in 2024, the girls like Charlie XCX (brat), Ariana Grande (Eternal Sunshine and Wicked), Sabrina Carpenter (Short n' Sweet), Dua Lipa (Radical Optimism), and Chappell Roan where all about community and supporting each other's music and careers. And finally, as the Eras Tour came to a close, Taylor Swift showed what spreading the wealth means. She's now a billionaire, but she gave back to her employees with $100,000 bonuses after the tour ended. Now, as the year is winding down, Keith said he's going to spend a lot of time with Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, while Ted is going to spend more time looking for rock bands with whom he is unfamiliar -- you know, if we're being grammatically correct here.

In this episode, we dive into the storied career of Blur, one of the most iconic bands to emerge from the British music scene in the 1990s. We start by exploring their early days in London, when Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree first came together to form a band that would become synonymous with the Britpop movement. We'll discuss the band's rise to fame, starting with their debut album, Leisure, and how they quickly became the darlings of the UK indie scene. With hits like "There's No Other Way" and "She's So High," Blur began carving out a unique sound that combined jangly guitars, catchy melodies, and Albarn's distinct vocals. Moving into the height of Britpop in the mid-90s, we examine Blur's transformation into cultural icons with their seminal albums Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, and The Great Escape. We'll discuss how Blur, alongside Oasis, became one of the leading faces of the Britpop "Battle of the Bands," dominating the charts and headlines with their rivalry. This period marked a creative high point for the band, producing unforgettable hits like "Girls & Boys," "Parklife," and "Country House," which captured the zeitgeist of British youth culture. We'll delve into how Blur's sharp, satirical lyrics and their reflections on British society helped them stand out from their contemporaries. As the episode progresses, we look at the band's evolution in the late 90s and early 2000s, when they began experimenting with new sounds and distancing themselves from the Britpop label. We'll explore their self-titled album, Blur, and the shift towards a more lo-fi and alternative rock sound, influenced heavily by American indie music. The success of singles like "Beetlebum" and "Song 2" demonstrated Blur's ability to reinvent themselves and appeal to a broader, international audience. We'll discuss the band's internal struggles, including Graham Coxon's departure, and how these challenges influenced their music and dynamic. We'll then move to the band's hiatus and the members' individual projects, particularly Damon Albarn's formation of the virtual band Gorillaz, which further showcased his versatility as an artist. We'll explore how Blur's brief hiatus and eventual reunion for the Think Tank album in 2003 marked another significant shift in their sound, embracing more experimental and electronic elements. The episode will cover their triumphant return to the stage in the late 2000s, including their emotional reunion shows and the release of The Magic Whip in 2015, proving that Blur's relevance and creative spark were far from diminished. There's kind of a theme to this week's show, which is admittedly a bit of a mashup of two previous episodes plus a new chat with Travis & Lisa from The Guestroom in Louisville, KY. It all started last summer, when Lisa and Travis flew to London to see Blur in concert at the legendary Wembley Stadium. Cut to this year, and the July 26 release of the Blur Live At Wembley set. Paul caught up with Travis & Lisa to debrief them on what it was like to actually be there. Woo Hoo! Well, Blur's Graham Coxon has recently been playing with Dhani Harrison, so we took this opportunity to re-post Paul's chat with Dhani earlier this year. Topics included working with his dad, George Harrison, who as you probably know was in The Beatles. Well, THAT made us want to close this week's episode with a reprise of Paul's conversation with the legendary drummer from The Beatles, Ringo Starr. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got an actual Beatle! So many connections here, and that's not even including the fact that both Blur and The Beatles were signed to the Parlophone label in the UK! Say "Beetlebum" three times and you're there. Welcome to episode 172 with Bill Ryder-Jones, who is a singer-songwriter, musician, music producer and composer. Bill was a co-founder of The Coral, which they started when he was 13, and he played lead guitar on the first five albums, eventually leaving in 2008. It was around then that Bill started to experience depression, agoraphobia and panic attacks which would eventually lead him to leave The Coral at the height of their success. At that time, it wasn't made public that Bill's mental health issues where a result of witnessing the death of his brother in a freak accident while they were on a family holiday as children.. After the breakdown that followed, Bill started to work on his solo career and to date has released 5 albums under his own name and has collaborated with the Arctic Monkey, Graham Coxon and Paloma Faith and produced records for the likes of Mick Head and Saint Saviour and many others. His latest record, Iechyd da, was released in January to a fanfare of praise and glowing reviews and its already a contender for album of the year. In this episode I chat to Bill about the album, the songs and the upcoming tour. We chat about Bill's experiences with agoraphobia and how it affects him day to day and in relationships and we chat about touring, drinking, getting older and making music. We also chat about panic attacks and dealing with fear and being alone how sometimes choosing an unhealthy coping strategy is choosing the lesser of many possible evils. I loved chatting to Bill. He is such a lovely man and we laughed a lot despite getting in to some really deep topics. I'm a huge fan of his music so getting the opportunity to ask him about it was a personal podcasting highlight for me and I can't thank him enough for his openness and his time. Bill Ryder-Jones, Anna Calvi and Poppy Hankin discuss the first piece of music that really affected them, how their writing has changed as they've grown older, and how much they're willing to give people control over their music.Bill Ryder-Jones is from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. Since then he's pursued a solo career, writing his own albums and film scores, as well as producing and playing on records for other artists including the Last Shadow Puppets, Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith, the Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. He's recently released his fifth solo album Iechyd Da (which translates as "good health" in Welsh). Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.
Last fall, singer-songwriter and film score composer Dhani Harrison released a dynamic new solo album called Innerstanding, which gave me the perfect opportunity to finally interview him in depth. "To innerstand is to comprehend from a place of love and detachment, where you're not forcing yourself or being forced," he explains. "If you come at things from a place of love, then you'll always end up on the right side of history." I've known Dhani for nearly twenty years, and I was so glad to have him as a guest on the LSQ podcast, and to ask him about his personal musical evolution. We connected over Zoom late last year, and he shared memories of how he first discovered and explored his musical talents, with encouragement from his dad, George Harrison, how skateboarding with his cousin in LA as a kid sparked his obsession with the Wu-Tang Clan, why, in spite of his abiding love for Jimi Hendrix, he never wanted to be a shredder, why he was so geeked to have Blur's Graham Coxon play (both guitar and saxophone) on Innerstanding, how he started writing film scores back in 2013 with the music for Beautiful Creatures, why he returned to living in the forest in recent years, leading up to the new album, and more. Innerstanding is available on vinyl here.

Some people might say it's time we started making sense! We've both been to see the remastered Talking Heads concert movie - hear the verdict - and we've also been impressed by the new album from Paul Cook and the Chronicles.ElTele has completed an untypical rock biography and we talk about the life of the musician who wrote it. We wrestle with the Morrissey conundrum once again, and wonder if University Challenge is getting easier.T Shirt of the Week begins (should we be even wearing T shirts at our age?), The Captain has opinions on Squid Game The Challenge, and we are staggered by the price of tickets to see an American comedy legend. ABOUT HAVE YOU GOT IT YET: THE STORY OF SYD BARRETT AND PINK FLOYD Directed by award-winning filmmaker Roddy Bogawa (Taken By Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis) and the late, acclaimed cover designer Storm Thorgerson (Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Black Sabbath) Narrated by Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The Patriot) Featuring interviews with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Roger Waters, original band managers Peter Jenner and Andrew King, as well as The Who's Pete Townshend and Blur's Graham Coxon among others. Syd and Pink Floyd crystallized a cultural moment where anything seemed possible but where that freedom could come with a cost. Was Syd just another drug casualty? Did he suffer from an undiagnosed mental condition? Or did he dislike the attention and fame as the fun turned to work? While there are no clear answers which might be the case, there is the feeling by all those around Syd that something went terribly wrong. Have You Got it Yet? is a chronicle and a mosaic of Barrett's creative and destructive impulses, his captivating presence and absence - a portrait of the complex puzzle that was his life.
Well, hello there. Welcome back to another special, one off review podcast from us, the fellas at Trve. Cvlt. Pop!On this episode we are looking at the 9th studio album from recently reformed Brit-pop legends Blur, The Ballad of Darren. This is the band's first album since 2015's rather disappointing The Magic Whip album, but the members of Blur have been keeping themselves busy in a world without their main band; Damon Albarn has been doing some solo stuff and a little project called Gorillaz, both guitarist Graham Coxon and drummer Dave Rowntree have gone solo too and bassist Alex James has... made some cheese... we're not sure. So, does the world need a new Blur album? Is it a risk to come out of hiatus and give the world new material when you already have a stellar back catalogue to fall back on and millions of fans who would surely be happy to see Blur live out their days as a lovely nostalgia blanket?Well, as you'll hear, when they are able to give us such an interesting new flavour as the one we get on The Ballad of Darren, it's certainly worth the risk. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mereki over Zoom video!Australian/English savant of purposeful pop Mereki releases her debut solo album Death of a Cloud. Created over seven years and three continents, in collaboration with a roster of the artists Mereki trusted most to bring this deeply personal and intuitively conceived material to life, the album is a look into the joy and difficulty of self-realization and finding the universe within, expressing this journey through music – Stream. The album release comes along with the news of Mereki signing with BMG. Proving her success as an independent artist, her progress will be furthered through the creative efforts of BMG along with her own label BunBun Records.Leading up to her album release, Mereki put out the singles “Presence” and “Twin Flame.” The creation of “Presence” stemmed from Mereki getting inspired by the guitars reverberating through the walls while in a writing room above the studio where Dhani Harrison and Graham Coxon of Blur were recording. After she began singing a melody that became the first verse, she shared it with Harrison, and then the two were motivated to work together to complete Mereki's composition. “Twin Flame” sentimentally arrived the same week as Valentine's Day as a hymn to kindred spirits. Her singles were met with praise from the likes of Notion, Beats Per Minute, Soundazed and Mundane Mag, as well as editorial support from Spotify's infamous Lorem playlist, making the artist's return her strongest streaming to date.At the end of 2022, Mereki and her Be Kind charity partnered with the Happy Baby Community for a Presents for Presence holiday fundraiser. The campaign helped raise money, awareness, and much needed supplies for asylum-seeking new mothers and their babies. Happy Baby Community provides a holistic approach to healing which includes long term support for both mothers and children.ABOUT MEREKI:Indie Australian/English artist Mereki creates pop with a purpose – vibrant musical worlds that share messages of transcendence and healing without sacrificing the fun. Now based in the UK, she first moved from her native Australia to the USA where she quickly found a home in the spiritually minded creative community of the east side of Los Angeles, collaborating with an impressive collection of producers, writers, and musicians as she refined her song writing and voice, laying the foundations for what was to come.Mereki began writing and releasing music with esteemed writers & producers Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, Caroline Polachek) and Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira). GRAMMY-nominated superstar producer Ariel Rechtshaid (HAIM, Vampire Weekend, Madonna, Adele) spotted her talent, prompting their collaboration, “Golden Boy”, recorded by fellow Australian icon Kylie Minogue. She scored writing credits with Phantogram and Atrak, and guest artist and co-writer credit on tracks with Dhani Harrison, Goldroom, Basenji, Flight Facilities and Holychild. While fronting Goldroom, she performed everywhere from middle America to NYC to Bogotá, Colombia, before going on to perform with electronic act Flight Facilities as their featured vocalist on the duo's sold out North American tour.Kindness and magic are at the backbone of everything Mereki aims to be and be around in her music and in her life. She finds expression for her message in many creative outlets. In addition to music, she is also working on a record label, a children's book, a book of poetry and a collection of portrait photography. In 2016, Mereki created Mereki's Clubhouse, a pop-up event platform with a focus on kindness and creating spaces to give a voice to up-and-coming female artists. The Clubhouse motto “Be Kind” grew into a non-profit organization of the same name.Through all her work with and for others, Mereki found time to create her own music. Her debut solo single, “Blue Lake”, was released to critical acclaim from the likes of Spin, Nylon and Flood Magazine. After enduring some personal tragedy and heartbreak, she found catharsis in a brief foray into high-energy punk rock, releasing a few singles that landed her music in a Victoria's Secret commercial. In 2017, Mereki returned to the essence of who she truly is with the release of the Beach EP. The songs on Beach have Mereki's signature style, a distinctly pop-feel with positive messaging, while tracks like “Spiritual”, “French Kissing” and “Got It All” also hold an ethereal, dreamy quality.Mereki's return to music marks what has already been an extraordinary year for her, including her UK live debut at the legendary Glastonbury Festival 2022, alongside appearances at a host of UK festivals and headlining shows in London. We want to hear from you! The Waeve is the coming together of two unique musical voices - Graham Coxon & Rose Elinor Dougall who've just come together to make a rather deep and magical record together as The Waeve.Rose - started out in the Spector-eque girl group The Pipettes in the early millennium, has recorded since with Mark Ronson amongst others and her solo music, like on her most recent solo album A New Illusion, taps into a dreamy yet darkly tinged sound with elements like psychedelia, krautrock and folk in the mix. Graham is, what we call in England, somewhat of a national treasure. As guitarist from Blur, he's been a major creative driving force behind some of the most iconic music of the last thirty years and like Thurston Moore or Jonny Marr, created a real alternative version of a guitar hero, one with vulnerability, angularity and curiosity in place of machismo and pomposity. They spoke with Paul about how they came together and made a dark, richly layered album, along the way becoming a couple and they reflect on the difficult subject of Englishness, their creative processes and more. The Waeve's debut LP is out Feb 5th on TransgressiveThis episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Eine der wichtigsten kulturellen Bewegungen der 90er wäre ohne Parklife wohl nicht möglich gewesen. Doch an Britpop überrascht vor allem, wie verschieden die musikalischen Strömungen sind, die ihn ausmachen.
I cannot even begin tell you just how obsessed I was with the pop band Blur when I was a teenager. And so it was extremely exciting to get the opportunity to speak to that band's guitarist, Graham Coxon – who was always my favourite – for this edition of the podcast (and for a bigger newspaper article coming soon). I've interviewed Graham before, years ago, in my NME days, in a coffee shop in Camden. I remember the coffee machine being loud and not being able to hear what he was saying. It was quite farcical really. I'm pleased to report, however, that this conversation - about Graham's excellent memoir, Verse, Chorus, Monster!, out now on Faber & Faber, his always interesting solo career, his thoughts on Gorillaz, the virtual band conceived by his longtime Blur running mate Damon Albarn, and his plans for the future – which principally involves his new band The Waeve with new partner Rose Elinor Dougall - new partner in every sense of the word - sounds clean as a whistle. I really enjoyed doing this episode. Hope you enjoy listening to it!And join the Substack!
Today, Crystal & Grey discuss Supernatural Episode 02.10 - Hunted. We talk about: Graham Coxon and Joaquin Phoenix look-alikes, William Shatner's albums, and pivoting into becoming a House M.D. podcast. As mentioned in the title, Grey is tipsy this episode. Several mentions of alcohol are scattered through-out the episode. Other content warnings include: mentions of suicide (42:16-42:24) (1:17:27-1:17:42), eugenics and antiblack racism (1:06:47-1:07:39), police and police racism (1:21:37-1:23:23) (1:49:41-1:49:50), and rape (1:24:26-1:25:06) (1:33:54-1:34:12) (1:47:05-1:47:13) Episode Transcript: https://bustyasianbeautiespod.carrd.co/#transcripts Give us a Tip! This week, Today's Top Tune is dedicated to sharing the amazing homegrown budding talent we've sourced via KCRW's Young Creators Project. First up is Silver Lake-based high school senior Tatyana Richaud, a young queer woman with a passion for social activism and film scoring who has already collaborated with the likes of Graham Coxon and Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino. As a child, Taty says she “worked out melodies on my alligator keyboard while dreaming of the stories they told,” and learned to read music before she could learn to read words.
Scott sits with the lead singer of the one of the biggest Brit pop bands in history, Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon. The band has sold over 100 million records and was recently welcomed into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. They start off the interview by discussing what it means to be receive that honor. The two get into the music discovery process as Simon talks about his radio show and the history of Duran Duran. They touch base on early MTV days and cover everything up to the latest record, Future Past. They talk about working with various producers in their career from Nile Rodgers to Giorgio Moroder and collaborators like Graham Coxon. Lastly, they touch base on the Duran Duran NFTS and discuss the upcoming tour. Tune in!
Welcome to a special Riot Act Reviews podcast, an opportunity for Steve and Remfry to take a look at some of the more notable recent releases in the world of alternative music. This week we cast a critical eye over Future Past by Duran Duran, the 15th studio album from the legendary New Romantic band. It couldn't have been two more drastic ends of the spectrum that our hosts were coming from with this record, Steve as a self confessed Duran Duran superfan who has heard every album of their entire career, and Remfry picking Future Past as his first experience listening to a full length studio effort by the band. There is always going to be a huge weight of context behind any band that have been around as long as Duran Duran, and Future Past is no exception, not only is it their first album since 2015's Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson produced effort Paper Gods, it also marks 40 years since their self-titled debut was released. Future Past features numerous contributions, with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and legendary Italian composer Giorgio Moroder being just two of the names involved with the writing and production of the record, but does the classic sound of Duran Duran remain intact four decades after they first burst onto the music scene? In a heated race, Blur emerged victorious in our first-ever request episode. Suggested by our friend Molly in Boston, the 1994 British classic beat out over 40 other suggestions in a public vote. The 16-track LP is the longest album we've ever done but we tore through it, despite some fun surprise interruptions. Lots of strong opinions and amusing tales, including the time Sam and Adam squeezed into a tiny club with the band to watch up-and-comers Oasis. Please tell us how YOU would rank tonight's tunes on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @wewillrankyoupod ! FILE UNDER/SPOILERS:Bluh, Far Out, Damon Albarn, Trouble In The Message Centre, Britpop, Debt Collector, Alex James, London Loves, British stuff, Lot105, Graham Coxon, Tracy Jacks, Tracy Jones, Pulp, Clover Over Dover, Dave Rowntree, Parklife, Fred Armisen, Bad Head, more British stuff, Magic America, Stephen Street, To The End, misheard lyrics, Boys And Girls, Reading Festival, Jubilee, better than Oasis, Bank Holiday, computer noises, This is a Low, Mexican Radio, End of a Century, 1994.
