Legendary musician, composer and producer Brian Eno has turned his attention to the climate crisis. In 2021 he founded the ground-breaking organisation EarthPercent, a charity which aims to raise $100m by 2030. The money - from royalties of partner artists - is being used to reduce the environmental impact of the music industry, as well as restoring nature, advancing policy change and securing "climate justice and fair environmental stewardship." Among the musicians with whom he is currently collaborating are Coldplay, CHVRCHES, Nile Rogers, Anna Calvi, Louis VI and Michael Stipe. A rare honour, listeners are welcomed inside the hallowed soundproofed walls of his London studio, where they experience first-hand the recording methods of his latest project.

Our latest guest on Soundtracking is the musician, style icon and all-round delight, Anna Calvi, who joins Edith to discuss her score for seasons five and six of Peaky Blinders. Anna's music is such a key component to the culmination of the much-loved show, and hearing her talk about her creative process in soundtracking it is utterly captivating. And, thanks to our good friends at Domino Records, we've got a vinyl copy of Anna's score to seasons 5 & 6 to give away. Hurrah! All the details are on our social channels (see below) ... Milkie is the moniker of songwriter and front woman Millie Phipps, and also the name of her four-piece avant-pop band currently making waves in their hometown of Bristol. Early obsessions with the Beatles' White Album and Serge Gainsbourg guaranteed Millie's early forays into songwriting were somewhat unusual, and she's been writing idiosyncratic pop songs ever since. As a band, Milkie are hard to describe yet distinctively themselves. They're a guitar band, except sometimes they don't play any guitars. They're a synth band but sometimes they'll unplug everything and sit on the floor. Millie's lyrics are the thread that ties it all together. Whether it be grappling with sadness and boredom in equal measure at a family funeral, or daydreaming behind a desk in a miserable office job, she tells everyday stories with a poetic sense of defiance, despair, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. Milkie formed in early 2023, not long before Millie left her grown-up job as a university principal, fed up and yearning to make music again. Spring 2024 has seen Milkie in the studio recording their debut album (due late 2024), produced by guitarist Benjamin Johnson and mixed by TJ Allen (Bat for Lashes, Anna Calvi). For fans of Pulp, Broadcast and Cate Le Bon.
Bill Ryder-Jones, Anna Calvi and Poppy Hankin discuss the first piece of music that really affected them, how their writing has changed as they've grown older, and how much they're willing to give people control over their music.Bill Ryder-Jones is from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. Since then he's pursued a solo career, writing his own albums and film scores, as well as producing and playing on records for other artists including the Last Shadow Puppets, Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith, the Wytches and Hooton Tennis Club. He's recently released his fifth solo album Iechyd Da (which translates as "good health" in Welsh). Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.
I hope you enjoy listening! A-ha, Björk, Anna Calvi, Toni Childs, Billie Eilish, Enya, Rupert Hine, Hurts, Imagine Dragons, Moi Caprice, Peter Murphy, Bill Nelson, Panic At The Disco, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Olivia Rodrigo, Emelie Sande, Simple Minds, Split Enz og Taylor Swift udtrykker "håb og ønsker" i musik.

We're back to this century for this months episode as we talk about our favourite songs from 2011, ranging from indiepop to black metal, with various arguments about The Muppets along the way. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Battles, Beastie Boys, Bon Iver, Anna Calvi, Childish Gambino, Death Cab For Cutie, The Deer Tracks, Dir En Grey, Fleet Foxes, The Go! Team, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Kvelertak, Lanterns On The Lake, Limp Bizkit, Liturgy, Low, J Mascis, Mogwai, Thurston Moore, Opeth, Amanda Palmer, Josh T. Pearson, Radiohead, *shels, Soley, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ulver, The Weeknd, Weezer Ft Hayley Williams, & YOB.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6bizkqtWTTgxkNqH7GGoj5?si=af071097a6324a9aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

My guest this week is Aoife McArdle, a filmmaker from Northern Ireland who you may know from her recent stint as a co-director and producer on Apple TV's Emmy-nominated series Severance. Severance depicts a world in which people can choose to surgically divide their work and personal lives, so neither selves have any idea who they are outside of those realms. It stars Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro and Christopher Walken and it recently secured 14 Emmy Award nominations, including the first Outstanding Drama Series for Apple TV. It's truly an exceptional show, so inventive and cohesive and the storytelling is just chef's kiss. The final episode, which I won't spoil, is on another level. And so I was thrilled to speak to Aoife on the basis of that alone, but then I discovered her extensive background in directing music videos for artists like Bloc Party, Jon Hopkins, James Vincent McMorrow, Anna Calvi and U2. Her direction is consistently gorgeous and her eye for visuals outstanding. In 2017 Aoife directed her first feature Kissing Candice, about a 17-year-old girl who desperately wants to escape her small seaside town and finds solace in her imagination. More recently she directed a short film starring Cillian Murphy called All This Unreal Time, an immersive sort-of performance piece written by Max Porter - a preternaturally gifted writer - that explores themes of repentance, masculinity and environmentalism. Description of any sort won't do it justice, so I urge you to click the link in the show notes and give it a watch. We talk about how Aoife discovered filmmaking was a career and how she began to pave her way into it, her creative process when directing music videos, the learning curve that was her directorial debut, adapting to the environments you're shooting in and working with what's available, and of course, her experience on Severance, working with a very talented ensemble cast and in tandem with Ben Stiller and what she's working on now…

This time, we speak to Rob Ellis, whose role as drummer and then co-producer with PJ Harvey led to rich and creative career, working with stars like Thom Yorke, Anna Calvi and Marianne Faithful. We hear great some great stories on what it was like recording these maverick artists, and Rob's refreshingly holistic approach to the recording process. Click here for a playlist of Rob's production work When DRY, the debut album by PJ Harvey, that he had co-produced and played drums on became a global hit, and a touchstone of early 90s guitar music, Rob Ellis was catapulted into 10 years of arranging and producing for a wide variety of artists including 60s legend Marianne Faithful. At the turn of the millennium Rob returned to work on production with Ms Harvey for what would become the Mercury Award winning album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. This kicked off another rich vein of work for upcoming and established artists such as Torres, Anna Calvi (who's debut album brought Rob another Mercury nomination) and 2:54. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. We're at a point where the music world is full of people who want to be more sustainable and take some form of climate action but don't know where to start. The route to making a useful contribution begins with understanding... then making a plan. The UK not-for-profit organisation Julie's Bicycle are all about education – they help the creative industries understand their environmental impact (measuring their carbon footprint, for example) and then work with them to create their own green strategies. They've collaborated with artists, festivals and venues. On this episode Chiara Badiali joins hosts Fay Milton and Greg Cochrane to discuss the tools and guidance Julie's Bicycle provide, hear about the most common questions they get asked and take a peek at what a more sustainable music industry looks like – electrified festivals and pints of lager made from recycled urine could become more common! Cheers! Fay and Greg also look ahead to a momentous week of music/climate action, and leave you with some recommendations. — Sounds Like A Plan series 1 is supported by Bulb – the green energy company. I sat down across the internet airwaves with Fiona Brice who is a British composer, arranger and performer working with the violin, piano, and voice. She once was a stranger to me but hasn't been since about 2001. That's the thing, aside from perhaps your family, everyone starts out as a stranger. Where you go from there is unknown. We talk about the cancellation of the music industry, sitting still in one place, "The Artist's Way", the composition headspace, isolation, travel, exercise, Patreon, practising your instrument (be it a camera or a violin), the scrutiny of one's own work and how helpful perfectionism is or isn't. Please note this episode does contain incidences of swearing (because it's rock and roll) and references to drinking alcohol. Anna Calvi is a powerhouse. A virtuoso guitarist from a young age, it took her a while to gather confidence to get behind the mic; but when she did, the world took notice. In the last decade, Anna has released three acclaimed albums, she's toured Australia, and she's consistently pushed the boundaries, sonically and lyrically. I've had the pleasure of meeting Anna a couple of times before, and it's always a trip to hear her diminutive speaking voice when you know the power she has on stage and on record. It's like something transforms, when she's inside a song. Our most recent meeting happened with the help of technology; Anna joining me on Skype at her apartment in London, and me in Australia, while we all stay close to home. I gave her this theme not just because we're all in lockdown, but for that very switch I see flicked in her; when music has the power to bust us out, lift us up, and take us somewhere. From the heavenly sounds of Elizabeth Fraser, to the explosion of love from Perfume Genius, and the abandon of the Bad Seeds, this is a brilliant exploration of a wild heart. Grace Jones – Walking in the Rain Cocteau Twins – Heaven or Las Vegas Courtney Barnett – Pedestrian At Best Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Get Ready for Love Perfume Genius – Slip Away
Mercury Prize-nominated Anna Calvi joins me to talk about scoring the latest series of Peaky Blinders. Director Peter Webber tells us about his latest film, the reggae documentary Inna De Yard, and comedian Sara Pascoe explores some of the fascinating facts about the human anatomy in her new book Sex Power Money. In The Maths of Life, Dr Hannah Fry gets into super-smellers, Einstein and Columbus, and we've got more of your House Music – the everyday objects playing pop hits.
