In this week's message, Pastor John Durham closes out our Whole Heart series by unpacking Haggai 2:20–23. He reminds us that God will shake all that is temporary in order to establish what is eternal. Through Christ, we receive an unshakable Kingdom, and even what feels lost or broken can be fully restored. God is not finished.
This week, we took a break from Haggai and our Whole Heart series to hear a message on prayer from our Student Pastor, Ryan Oakes. Drawing from Philippians 4, Ryan reminded us that prayer is not about getting everything we ask for, but about being with God in every moment and bringing our honest selves before Him. He challenged us to let go of our desire for control and trust that, while God may not always change our circumstances, He promises a peace that guards our hearts.
In this week's message, Pastor John Durham continues our Whole Heart series, teaching from Haggai 2:10–19. He emphasizes that righteousness doesn't come through proximity to holy things but through an internal transformation by God's grace. This grace is powerful, rooted in His character, and can not be earned by our own merit.

In this message from Haggai 2:1–9, Pastor Jeremy Daniels reminds us that while the present may seem small compared to the past, God's presence and promises call us to hope. We are encouraged to look up, look back, and look forward—trusting that the future glory God is preparing far surpasses what came before.

Today we started reading Psalm 119. The longest ‘chapter' in the Bible. The phrase “whole” arrested our attention, it is in v.2,10 & 34 in today's portion. The point comes across most powerfully that the real way to approach God is to do it with all our being, with total commitment of mind.Verse 2 says “Blessed are those who keep his testimonies who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!” If the Psalmist is David, which many presume it is, we note how he then exclaims, “Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!”[v.5]The question and answer given in verses 9 to 11 are ones we should memorise – and we are sure they apply to young women as much as to young men. The question is, “How can a young man keep his way pure?” And the answer, “By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”David experienced times of depression. The Psalmist writes, “My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!” [v.28] So God's word, as well as inspiring our mind to keep out (or get rid of) impurities, is a source of strength when we are depressed. He declares, “I cling to your testimonies O LORD …. I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!” [v.31,32]Our hearts and minds need enlarging for them to contain all the precepts, knowledge and wisdom we gain over time from God's word, this process pushes out all unwholesome thoughts.“Give me understanding that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.” [v.34] The word ‘law' is all embracing, it is not just a set of rules to be kept (and added to) as those opposed to Jesus practised. Finally, glancing ahead to v.57, the Psalmist declares, “The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favour with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay …” We must follow his example with our whole heart!

Read OnlineFrom that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17Now that our Christmas Octave and Epiphany celebrations are complete, we begin to turn our eyes to the public ministry of Christ. The above line from today's Gospel presents us with the most central summary of all of the teachings of Jesus: Repent. However, He doesn't say only to repent, He also says that “the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” And that second statement is the reason we must repent. In his spiritual classic, The Spiritual Exercises, Saint Ignatius of Loyola explains that the primary reason for our lives is to give to God the greatest glory we can. In other words, to bring forth the Kingdom of Heaven. But he also goes on to say that this can only be accomplished when we turn away from sin and all inordinate attachments in our lives so that the one and only focus of our lives is the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the goal of repentance.Soon we will celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and then we return to Ordinary Time within the Liturgical Year. Throughout Ordinary Time, we will reflect upon the public ministry of Jesus and focus upon His many teachings. But all of His teachings, everything that He says and does, ultimately points us to repentance, a turning away from sin and a turning toward our glorious God.In your own life, it is essential that you place before your mind and heart the call to repentance. It is essential that you daily hear Jesus saying those words to you: “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Do not only think about Him saying this many years ago; rather, hear it said to you, today, tomorrow and every day of your life. There will never be a time in your life when you do not need to repent with all your heart. We will never reach perfection in this life, so repentance must be our daily mission. Reflect, today, upon this exhortation from our Lord to repent. Repent with your whole heart. Examining your actions every day is essential to this mission. See the ways that your actions keep you from God and reject those actions. And look for the ways that God is active in your life and embrace those acts of mercy. Repent and turn toward the Lord. This is Jesus' message to you this day.Lord, I repent of the sin in my life and pray that You give me the grace to become free from all that keeps me from You. May I not only turn from sin but also turn to You as the source of all mercy and fulfillment in my life. Help me to keep my eyes on the Kingdom of Heaven and to do all I can to share in that Kingdom here and now. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved.
