If you've ever thought about quitting your W2 job and pursuing something greater, working with your spouse, or wondered if you have the mindset needed for an exceptional marriage, this episode is for you! If you've got small kids and you're working from home, trying to juggle all the roles of life, parenthood, entrepreneurship, and taking care of yourself, this episode is for you! This episode is packed with nuggets to help your marriage, both a husband and a wife's perspective on many issues we all face, and my personal favorite part of this episode- an inside look and listen on how a truly healthy, happy marriage mindset is. I was absolutely blown away with the way Brady and Leslie talk to and about each other! The mindset they have toward working together, their WHY for working together, their mindset for their marriage, it's all so inspiring and beautiful. If we normalize anything, let it be this! Leslie and Brady Huffer started a digital marketing side hustle soon after they got married as a creative outlet and additional income stream while she was a special education teacher and he was in corporate sales. Their marketing agency, Hey Huffers, grew faster than they had anticipated and they decided to take the leap to quit their 9 to 5 jobs to run it full-time together. A week later they found out they were pregnant and expecting a baby girl! Now they get to run their business from home and be present with their daughter each day. In the transition of leaving their full-time jobs to be home managing a business together, they have learned the importance of communication and teamwork as they tackle running a business and raising a baby hand-in-hand and side by side. In addition to Hey Huffers, Leslie has started a community to help other moms launch their own profitable at-home business as well as sharing simple everyday activities to keep kids engaged, learning, and growing each day called The Joyful Work at Home Mama. They love empowering other families to live life on their own terms! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.22.517476v1?rss=1 Authors: Tam, S., Huffer, K. E., Li, M., Swartz, K. J. Abstract: P2X receptor channels are trimeric ATP-activated ion channels expressed in neuronal and nonneuronal cells that are attractive therapeutic targets for human disorders. Seven subtypes of P2X receptor channels have been identified in mammals that can form both homomeric and heteromeric channels. P2X1-4 and P2X7 receptor channels are cation selective, whereas P2X5 has been reported to have both cation and anion permeability. P2X receptor channel structures reveal that each subunit is comprised of two transmembrane helices, with both N-and C-termini on the intracellular side of the membrane, and a large extracellular domain that contains the ATP binding sites at subunit interfaces. Recent structures of ATP-bound P2X receptors with the activation gate open reveal the unanticipated presence of a cytoplasmic cap over the central ion permeation pathway, leaving lateral fenestrations that may be largely buried within the membrane as potential pathways for ions to permeate the intracellular end of the pore. In the present study we identify a critical residue within the intracellular lateral fenestrations that is readily accessible to thiol reactive compounds from both sides of the membrane and where substitutions influence the relative permeability of the channel to cations and anions. Taken together, our results demonstrate that ions can enter or exit the internal pore through lateral fenestrations that play a critical role in determining the ion selectivity of P2X receptor channels. Kate Hawkesby: Auckland CBD isn't bouncing back the way it should

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2022 3:08

I was out in Auckland city last night - which if you know me, you know is extremely rare on a weeknight for me to be out anywhere, far less the CBD. But I was driving through downtown Auckland with my kids in the car and I couldn't believe how heaving town was for a Thursday night.Bars and restaurants full, people sitting cheek by jowl at tables both inside and out on the street, it was buzzing. I said to my kids, "look at this! Town's on fire!" and my very wise 22 year old son said, "Mum, you just wait, past 8 o'clock you do not want to be in here, it gets as rough as guts."Luckily I didn't plan on being in town past 8pm, but I knew he was right. Once the post work drinks and dinner crowd go home, Auckland's CBD transforms into a pretty unsavoury place. And I note even during the day it's getting untenable for some retailers.Clothing store Huffer said this week that Auckland's just not safe anymore, which anyone who lives in Auckland knows. From guns going off, to ram raids, to violent crime, to the CBD full of homeless, to retail theft.. the list is endless. And it's depressing.Especially if you're a born and bred Aucklander like me, who's grown up in this city, loved this city, owns property in it, raised kids in it. I was asking a real estate agent the other day how people live in town, right in the city centre, which should be prime real estate, proximity to great shopping, parks, ferries, buses, great eateries.. but how do they 1) navigate their way round it in a car, and 2) feel safe walking at night? I mean you can't take a car anywhere because there's no parking and you'd be congested in traffic forever anyway, so you may as well walk, but if you're walking, are you taking your life into your hands? It's noble that Mayoral hopefuls keep saying they'll fix congestion, and they'll clean up the city, they'll crack down on crime, but how are they doing any of that? The problem is the Mayor is just another councillor, and if the Auckland Council hasn't done any of that yet, what makes you think they'll start now? A new Mayor is still just as powerless. This is especially true when you've got the idealogues at Auckland Transport wanting to turn the city into one giant cycle lane. So it makes me sad what's happened to Auckland. We've got family living in other cities who love where they live. Christchurch, Dunedin, Northland, they love it. They relish their environment and are enjoying the spring back to life post Covid. But Auckland has just not managed that same bounce back. Many shops have closed permanently, the aforementioned Huffer's had two ram raids, another clothing store in town I know of has had to electronically tag every single piece of clothing due to the surge in shoplifting. Not that it changes anything given Police are not that interested. So I'm not sure how we fix Auckland, or what we can do to restore her back to her old glory. Is that even possible now? And if it's not possible, how many of us stay and just put up with a city in decline, versus actually bailing on it?

Lynne Huffer, the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Womens and Gender Studies at Emory University to speaks widely about the body of her work, including her her new book, Foucault's Strange Eros, out in 2020 with Columbia University Press.  What is the strange eros that haunts Foucault's writing? In this deeply original consideration of Foucault's erotic ethics, Lynne Huffer provocatively rewrites Foucault as a Sapphic poet. She uncovers eros as a mode of thought that erodes the interiority of the thinking subject. Focusing on the ethical implications of this mode of thought, Huffer shows how Foucault's poetic archival method offers a way to counter the disciplining of speech. At the heart of this method is a conception of the archive as Sapphic: the past's remains are, like Sappho's verses, hole-ridden, scattered, and dissolved by time. Listening for eros across fragmented texts, Huffer stages a series of encounters within an archive of literary and theoretical readings: the eroticization of violence in works by Freud and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, the historicity of madness in the Foucault-Derrida debate, the afterlives of Foucault's antiprison activism, and Monique Wittig's Sapphic materialism. Through these encounters, Foucault's Strange Eros conceives of ethics as experiments in living that work poetically to make the present strange. Crafting fragments that dissolve into Sapphic brackets, Huffer performs the ethics she describes in her own practice of experimental writing. Foucault's Strange Eros hints at the self-hollowing speech of an eros that opens a space for the strange. Jana Byars is the Academic Director of Netherlands: International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender.

The Seibertron.com Twincast Podcast starts out episode 272 by flipping the usual order of topics, beginning with the "Bragging Rights" segment where the show's hosts share what Transformers toys they've recently added to their collections. After that, impressions on the now officially revealed Commander Class Rodimus Prime are shared, with thoughts provided on how this may compare to other toy releases for the character released throughout the years. The leaked images of its companion piece, the also upcoming Leader Class Galvatron, come under the microscope next with speculation including whether some of the early, unofficial photos may repsenent a mis-transformed sample. The next wave of Generations War for Cybertron toys to be released under Netflix branding are now up for preorder, or in the case of the deluxe toys, in stores now, so the cast talks about what these bring to the table. This includes thoughts on the spoiler box which contains yet another version of the Siege Voyager Class Megatron tooling that is very similar to previously released iterations. Brief thoughts on upcoming vintage Beast Wars reissues and the 2021 Hasbro Pulse Fan Fest round out another episode.

As a marriage and family therapist with over 30 years of experience, Dr. Karin Huffer identified, in 1995, that extreme stress caused by our adversarial courts of law exacerbates health problems and can even cause PTSD and anxiety disorders.  In response, she developed a healing 8-step protocol tackling prevention and recovery.  Dr. Huffer is a trusted speaker, writer, and researcher on the topic of legal abuse syndrome and conducts webinars certifying advocates to put the protocols to work actively – right in the courtroom – to help disabled litigants that have nowhere else to turn to. Dr. Karin Huffer clarifies and effectuates the rights of those living with invisible disabilities.  EAA's court advocates are prepared to recognize and challenge legal abuses and the syndrome that can result from extreme stress.  Their education includes the use of tools for and information on conducting functional disability assessments.  Classes prepare advocates to design accommodations that offset symptoms supporting litigants.  The jewel in this program is the incorporation of eight steps to maintain mental health to be incorporated at the beginning, during, and end of the litigation process.  Mental and physical endurance are paramount to life during and after the litigation experience. Key Takeaways: [1:36] What legal abuse is [5:01] Where you need to go to request aid (hint: it's NOT in the courtroom) [8:10] The importance of recording your own proceedings [11:18] How filing a motion in court for accommodations for your disability can change the whole dynamic of the case, and how to avoid that [12:45] The number one thing you need when you go into litigation [14:22] How the majority of Americans have been priced out of the court system in America Website Mentioned: www.equalaccessadvocates.com legalabuse (@) gmail.com
