When COVID-19 hit, Zachary Gray's career as a personal trainer tanked. That's when he realized he needed a career that was less vulnerable to those kinds of economic factors. On this episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing, Jonathan welcomes Zachary Gray to the show. Zachary is a multifamily real estate investor who started his business about three years ago. He quickly scaled his business through partnerships and strategic investing. His focus is on stabilizing and refinancing multifamily buildings. As their conversation begins, Jonathan and Zachary explore his early exposure to real estate, the impetus for starting his business, and how Zachary began educating himself about real estate. You'll hear why meetups initially scared him, his first and second property purchases, and why Zachary prefers to add bedrooms over living space in nearly every building purchase. He shares why he looks for tenants with multiple adults in the home who have income streams, how building partnerships has been pivotal to scaling, and the need to use lines of credit and leverage strategically. Finally, Jonathan and Zachary uncover the formula Zachary uses for offers, why he advises building a contractor database, and the value of social media in helping build relationships and partnerships with other investors. Despite his short tenure in real estate investing, Zachary Gray quickly discovered a success formula that continues to pay dividends. Do you like dolphins? Do you like extremely predictable romantic drama? Do you like heavy handed religious metaphors? If any of these things sound like your idea of a good time then you're either Luke Westaway, or someone else who is going to enjoy the film we're talking about this week, A Ring of Endless Light. The movie tells the story of Vicky Austin, an aspiring poet who spends the summer on Seven Bay Island, an island on the Atlantic coast of the US that is just lousy with dolphins, evil fishermen, and hot boys to become entangled in love triangles with. Will Vicky be able to choose between earnest but kind dolphin researcher Adam Eddington and torrid bad boy Zachary Gray? Can she truly communicate with dolphins telepathically? And just why did dolphins make the conscious decision to give up their hands? The answers to some of these questions await! If you've watched A Ring of Endless Light and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. This week on The Road The Stage? Zachary Gray from The Zolas. This conversation could've gone on for days - listen in as Patrick Bateman and Peter Michaels talk to Zach about everything from the broad use of the term 'Britpop', what might be on a Zola's tour rider, having the cops called to a recent video shoot, the Vancouver music scene AND MORE! The Zola's have a new record dropping on July 16th, but you can hear a decent chunk of Come Back To Life already on whatever streaming service you prefer. *** In light of the recent discussions evolving from the discovery of 215 Indigenous children buried on the grounds of a Kamloops residential school, we encourage you to listen to the new Zola's song 'Wreck Beach/Totem Park'. As the band stated upon its release: "This song is for everyone whose homes are on Native land. And all the half-truths we grew up with".*** As always, please subscribe to the Bo's Bar & Stage YouTube channel for more content!

When I snagged Zachary Gray from The Zolas, backstage at his sold out show at the Vogue Theatre (with Calgary band The Dudes), Zach was a little preoccupied, juggling his two “strapping Scandinavian” merch guys and getting family into the venue. He was also being haunted by the ghost of legendary musician Prince (who had performed at the Vogue the night before). This is probably how I got him to spill all the details of his first girlfriend, among other things. Listen to our chat. Tracks played on the show... 1) The Zolas Ancient Mars “Knot In My Heart” 2) The Zolas Tic Toc Tic “You're Too Cool” 3) Grizzly Bear Veckatimest “While You Wait for the Others” (partial/background) *** 4) The Zolas Ancient Mars “Observatory” ALL songs CANCON except ***
Zachary Gray of the rock band the Zolas is a nice dude. No, really, he's a super nice dude. And he's never been in a fight...which is why his first physical encounter is so damn funny. All the music in this piece was by the Zolas. Thanks much to them...and please go listen to their rad new album, Ancient Mars, ASAP!
