In this episode of the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast, I sit down with Rory Benn-Clibborn from Perch Palm Lures to explore advanced techniques for fishing with soft plastic lures. Rory, an expert in finesse fishing, shares innovative methods that are rarely used in Australia but highly effective overseas. We kick off with drop shot rigging, a versatile technique allowing soft plastic lures to hover naturally above the bottom. Rory explains the setup, including the use of tungsten weights and straight shank drop shot hooks for increased sensitivity. Next, we delve into the Texas rig, perfect for shallow, weedy, or structured environments. Using a sliding tungsten bullet weight, this method offers a natural presentation and reduces snags, ideal for targeting species like redfin, bass, and golden perch. We then explore the Carolina rig, which adds a leader between the weight and the hook, making it excellent for open water fishing. Rory shares tips on using floating soft plastics to enhance this technique. Rory also introduces wacky worm rigging, where the lure is hooked through the middle, creating a unique fluttering action. This method is effective for casting under structures and targeting species like redfin and bass. Additionally, we discuss Ned rigging, a simple yet highly effective technique involving a mushroom-shaped jig head and buoyant soft plastic, perfect for catching a variety of species in different conditions. Throughout the episode, we cover practical applications and situational uses of these techniques, offering listeners valuable insights to adapt their fishing strategies based on local conditions and fish behavior. _____________________ Find this episode useful? Obviously, the best time to go fishing is anytime you can get out on the water. But we all know that certain conditions tend to be more productive for lure fishos than others. And a common rule of thumb in fishing circles is: "If there's no run, there's no fun". Now, it's always a bit dodgy to take a single idea like this and apply it to all forms of fishing and all species of fish. So today we're exploring whether the "no run = no fun" rule fits every situation, and if so, how and why. After all, the more we understand about how fish respond to their environment the better we'll become at predicting their movements and behviours. Tripletail are more common around the northern Australian coastline than most people realise. Topwater flathead fishing has never been so brutal! In today's interview with Russell Babekuhl we discover a whole new side to the humble flathead that few people know exists. It's a style of shallow water, hand to fin combat where oversized crocs obliterate topwater lures and use their might to smoke the angler in oyster covered structure.
