After a emotional premiership in 2014 the Albury Tigers despite losing ten senior players were ready to go back to back under co coaches Chris Hyde and Daniel Maher – after six straight grand finals against Yarrawonga the Lavington Panthers had emerged to challenge the top two – in a bruising season finale the Tigers etched themselves into OMFL greatness with a stirring grand final victory.
Yarrawonga had played in four straight OM netball A grade grand finals between 1999 and 2002 with just the one premiership in 2001, they then lost four straight preliminary finals between 2003 and 2006 – they broke the prelim final hoodoo in 2007 but were beaten in the 2007 grand final by North Albury – the following year they again lost to North Albury in the grand final – they had enough and were determined to make 2009 count under the guile of coach Tracey Gillies.

Anyone who spends a lifetime in golf will have gathered plenty of knowledge and insight which simply can't be learned from a book. Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort's Head Professional, Evan Droop, is one such golfer. Evan's father was the head professional at Yarrawonga before him and he has two sons, both PGA of Australia members, who may well take the job after him. In between, he managed five years on the Australasian Tour including a life and career-changing near miss at the 1992 Malaysian Masters. Droop recalls all that and more in this insightful and wide-ranging conversation with host Rod Morri.

Ironically for a golf show, we start off today with the Matildas and the Women's World Cup, it's all everyone is talking about and Nick and Mark have been enthralled watching it! Leads to a chat about how well the women handled their nerves in the penalty shootout and how Nick and Mark dealt with nerves in clutch moments on the golf course.Mark was at a function last week at St Michaels in Sydney, where they played 16 holes and he loved it. He reckons corporate golf days should all run with gimmes to help the pace.Mark and Nick both watched Tommy Fleetwood at the weekend, and Mark was impressed with something that he saw Tommy doing. Onto Memphis; should the Fedex Cup Championship players should have been given an option to wear shorts, given the heat? And Nick and Mark discuss if shorts should be an option more broadly in hot weather. The discussion then turns to the butt-sweat situation we saw from Lucas Glover. Nick gives an early masterclass on how to avoid butt sweat. After chatting about Lucas Glover possibly anchoring last week, Mark reckons someone has had a word to him as he wasn't doing it this past weekend. Nick talks about how Lucas' recent form is fantastic.Mark talks about one of the worst yips he has ever seen. See the video here.Nick was impressed with Cameron Davis at the weekend, who moves into the Top 50 and into all next years signature events.LIV was exciting at the weekend! Team Ripper finally got a win, led by Cam Smith who had a ripping weekend. Nick mentions something about the LIV coverage that frustrates him, and the boys discuss a theory as to why it happens. Gabi Ruffles on the Epsom Tour, wow! Nick and Mark love everything about her and she is killing it. 3 wins in 12 starts. Incredible. Mark raves about the Walton Heath course and how great it looked, and reckons the women are playing on the most stunning courses at the moment. Nick and mark discuss the importance of a pre-shot routine after watching Charley Hull who doesn't seem to have a consistent routine.Min Woo Lee has confirmed for the Aust Open, and Nick is excited. The boys list the other players they now want to sign on.Lots of feedback, a couple of questions and a couple of pieces of, shall we say, constructive criticism. Always fun, keep it coming, we love to hear from you and your comments and questions. We chat to Evan from Yarrawonga who has some new info about the great man Jarrod Lyle.Nick runs through some results from around the world, particularly some of the notable Aussie performances. And the guys have an idea for a future Top 5 on short backswings, and discuss Stuart Appleby's haircut.A great Top 5 today, requested by Chris Payne - the Top 5 recovery shots of all time. And a ripping masterclass from Nick on toe down chip shots, video here.Talk Birdie To Me, new episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. Damien Bugeja is a young man on a mission to have a great impact on this world. He is a leader beyond his years and through a particular hardship, he has developed a mindset that is unbreakable.Damien’s father passed away at just 52 years of age after being diagnosed with and battling cancer for five years. Damien was a registered carer for his father from just 19 years of age and talks in detail throughout the podcast of some things required to ensure his father could live as comfortably as possible as he battled on.Damien isn’t the first person to lose a parent at a young age, but what makes Damien’s story so inspiring is that from his father’s passing, he has now dedicated his whole life to raising money and awareness for cancer sufferers and to support families just like Damien’s who have loved ones dealt this cruel card.Damien recently completed a run from Craigieburn to Yarrawonga, 290km, in just 6 days. The run was a tribute to his father as Yarrawonga was the family’s annual holiday destination. Damien raised $60,000 for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for their care and treatment of his father throughout his battle.Throughout this episode, Damien discusses the emotional roller coaster of caring for his father, his own mental health battles because of it, how he turned his hardship into opportunity, the run itself and what he is planning on doing in the future which is jaw dropping. Please enjoy this relatable and motivating discussion with Damien Bugeja.

Hey there podcast family, welcome to episode 43 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thank you for lending me your ears today – I know you have lots of choices, so I sincerely appreciate me being one of them! Today’s episode is brought to you by my brand new, course Facebook Ads for Beginners. It’s been many hours in the making, but it’s here and I’m more excited than a cat when the Christmas tree goes up! I love talking about Facebook Ads. I believe they have the power to make a massive difference in my business and in yours. But one of the biggest mistakes people make and probably one of the most asked question I get about Ads is “to boost or not to boost”? So, I thought I’d deal with just that question here on the podcast today. It won’t surprise to learn that I am anti-boosting. But it will surprise you to hear that I think they do have a time and place and I’ll talk about that a bit later. Before I get all addsie (!) with you – let’s do the discovery of the week. THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! This discovery is a fun one! If you’re anything like me, you see things, get curious and think “how did you do that” and off you set down a 100 rabbit holes looking for the solution to what you saw and that was a little bit cute/different or awesome. Alas, this was one of those needless investigations driven purely by curiosity. Let me see if I can explain it? Have you ever seen on Facebook or Instagram or social media for that matter, a post where someone is texting in an animation and a second later someone responds? With all the sound effects of text typing and look and feel of a text. Well that’s what I’ve seen and thought “cool”! So, I found an app that does it. It’s called TextingStory and you’ll find it in the app store. It’s free and well, frankly, I think it’s a little cool. If standing out from the crowd on social media, where it’s busy and crowded, is the name of our game – then this little app just might hit that goal. And plus, it’s like having a little conversation with yourself! For those who talk to themselves, you know what I mean?!?! Anyway, check it out. I’ll have a story of what I am talking about here on my Instagram stories today – so go look at it – head to Small Business Made Simple and check it out. As always, just a little disclaimer, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. I just love them and from the response of my listeners, you guys, you are loving them too! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you’d like to share, please do so. Email me at jenn@jenndonovan.com.au or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! ARE FACEBOOK BOOST POSTS WORTH IT? Ok so let’s get into today’s episode all about boosting posts. Recently, a Facebook account manager had this to say about Boosted Posts: You are targeting engagement of heavy users and this does not correlate with purchase intent, brand recognition, etc. Instead, it is solely focused on those who tend to react or “like” anything. Yikes! Do you want to spend most of your ad dollars with an objective where people “like” anything? And as I’ve said several times on this Podcast when it comes to social media, my bank manager doesn’t accept “likes” as payment and I suspect yours doesn’t either! Boosting, frankly, is chasing that vanity metric – likes. It’s not good business strategy and it doesn’t help you reach those business goals. The abundance of information and targeting options for advertisers that can be used for advertising from within Facebook can be overwhelming for anyone that doesn’t work at a digital agency. Facebook knows this which is why it created the Boost Post option from the page interface. It knows it needed an “easier” option for businesses, so it created one – but it doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you. Easy isn’t always best. There’s a reason why this podcast is called Small Business Made Simple NOT Small Business Made Easy – easy isn’t always the right option. Here’s 3 reasons boosted posts are not a good option Reason One There are far more effective options available to you as an advertiser. Boosted posts are just one of twenty different marketing objectives Facebook offers advertisers. Many of its other marketing objectives will help you achieve business outcomes that Boosted Posts will not, such as leads, sales, brand awareness, increasing video views, and more. Reason Two Boosted Posts are focused on engagement (these are vanity metrics – like I mentioned before) and targeted specifically to the 16% of users likely to engage with an ad. Each of Facebook’s marketing objectives is designed for a specific goal and boosted posts are focused solely on post engagement. And engagement is not a good objective to pursue when you are focused on business outcomes such as growing revenue. Reason Three When you boost a post from your page interface, the targeting options are further restricted (versus running ads from the ad manager or Power Editor) as you cannot test different styles of creative (images, copy, or video) or bidding types. And if you’ve learnt anything from this podcast – marketing is all about test and measure and repeat! If you listened to last week’s podcast on Facebook Ads, you’ll remember I said, “assume nothing, test everything!” Just like we learnt in Footloose the movie – there is a time for everything and therefore there is a time for boosting (maybe, perhaps, almost!) So, when would you boost? The best case for running boosted posts are to increase your visibility within the organic news feed and to communicate something to your fans. The people who see your boosted posts are most likely going to be your most engaging fans – the social butterflies – those people that are always “liking” and engaging with posts regardless. My bestie who owns a retail shop (Judd’s in Yarrawonga – just to give it a plug) boosts, despite my requests not too (grrr) and she gets results. She puts up a picture of the new green shirt that’s just arrived, boosts it for a couple of dollars and boom, it’s sold out. I hate that! But why does it work – well, because of what I just said, she’s boosting to her most engaged fans – the ones who already love her and her business. You might argue that the green shirt would sell anyway, but that’s a test and measure thing! So, do this with extreme caution. Be really aware of what the goal is. So as we wrap up this little rant when it comes to Facebook Boosting, I would love for you to put your hand in the air and say these words “Jenn, from today I promise to keep my fingers off the boost button and I will make time to learn the Ads platform, because I know it’s so much more powerful for my business”. Excellent – glad we got that sorted! Now if you’re interested in my brand-new Facebook Ads for Beginners course, I’d love to be the person to teach you. I take your hand and I walk you through, step by step, not only on the actual Facebook Ads platform, but also goal setting, starting with the end in mind, your client avatar and SO MUCH MORE. This is truly a labour of love. My mission is to help as many small business owners as I can. This course is purely built on that core value. I am so tired to small business owners not using the platform because they don’t know how. THAT ALL ENDS TODAY MY PEEPS, today! To find out all the details about my course, go to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/facebook You’ll have lifetime access. As the platform changes, this course will update too, and you will have access to those updates, and I have an exclusive Facebook Group for my students of course so they can slip in there and have their questions answered by me or get help from fellow students as well. It’s almost the end of the year, so if learning Facebook Ads was one of your goals, then perhaps this is just what you need to tick that off your list! I’ll be back next Thursday with some more marketing know-how and another discovery of course. But that is all for Episode 43. I’d love to connect with you all on social – so let’s get social on social – I’m on all the good platforms, so let’s do that! …….. and remember small business peeps, as my opening song says, there’s no point in dreaming small!
Most yellowbelly anglers target the species in the impundments of southern Australia, but freshwater fishing guru Stephen Booth reckons the flowing water is just as productive. Why hello and welcome. Welcome to Episode 21 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. I was recently hanging out in one of my favourite groups on Facebook and someone put a post-up asking what people would like to know when it comes to running a small business. The number one answer was “how to market my business on a shoestring budget” or words to those effect. I love the fact that people understand that they need to be marketing their business and what benefit that has, which is exposure and sales of course, and there is lots of ways, which I’ll discuss shortly, that you can market for little or no money, but at the end of the day we do need to invest back into our businesses and have a marketing budget. But I get it, when you’re starting out – money is tight. So today I’m going to give you 7 ways you can market your business on a shoestring. But before I do that, of course, this Week’s Discovery of the Week. THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! This week’s discovery is a little ripper – or actually a big ripper. Have you ever taken the time to look at all the GOLD in the Chrome extension webstore? No? Well I highly highly recommend you do. Just google, Chrome webstore and you’ll be amazed. I’d recommend you tick the “free” box in the right-hand side and see what’s available for free and work from there. There are some pretty awesome discoveries in there which will definitely make your business simpler. I recently came across the Hunter's Chrome extension lets you immediately find the email addresses behind the websites you're browsing. Now when it comes to list building this extension could be business/life changing. It does have a free version as well as paid and fits beautiful into this week’s subject of marketing your business on a shoestring – which you’ll see it seamlessly fitting in shortly when we get into the episode! 7 WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS ON A SHOESTRING Before I set out and give you these 7 ways, I want to you to hear this. Some of these 7 costs a little and some will cost nothing. BUT all will cost your biggest commodity of TIME. Nothing is for free because you are WORTH something too. Your time, your expertise, YOU are worth something. Never forget that. In small business we tend forget that the resource of time is not free. We can always make more money – but we can’t make more time. So when you’re looking at free or low cost marketing options – make sure you make a note or a mental note of how much time it took and times those hours by your hourly rate (or what it should be) and get a clear picture of what “free” or “low cost” actually looks like. Ok, getting down off my high horse now … Ok, let’s get into it – 7 Ways to Market your business on a shoestring. START AN EMAIL LIST If you listen to some of the best, most successful small business owners in our country and beyond they will say that their biggest regret is that they didn’t start building a list of customers/clients earlier. So how do you go about it? Sign up for a free program, such as Mail Chimp – it’s free until you get a list of about 2000. Their packages have recently changed, so you might need to check the new packages out. Spend time thinking about how you can solve your clients or customers biggest challenge and design a lead magnet around it. A lead magnet can take lots of different forms from a checklist to a PDF download guide to a video series to an eBook to a resource guide. In fact, if you go to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/magnetideas I have 69 of them there. Once you have your magnet, you promote it everywhere your ideal client or customer hangs out and exchange your awesome piece of content that solves their problem for an email address. Or offer a prize and promote that online and offline if you have a shop front. Exchange the chance to win for an email address. If you’re going to do this though, have a listen to Episode 11 – all about running online competitions – you need to make sure you’re within the rules. List building is something I am totally passionate about and if you head back to Episodes 9 and 10, they are all about list building. I recommend you listen in. Of course, once you start building your list. You need a plan to keep in contact with them – but for now, START. Make list building your priority as free marketing of your business and maybe use the Chrome extension mentioned in the discovery to reach out and potentially connect with someone you really want to work with or for but don’t know how to get in contact! Of course, there’s courtesy rules in play here – so remember reach out to new connections the way you’d appreciate (so not salesy!). GET FREE MEDIA PR This doesn’t always make more sales, I get that, it can, it certainly can but what it does even better is set you up as the expert in your field. Getting your business into the media can be HUGE for brand awareness. For those sceptics out there, I guarantee you that media outlets are just itching to get a hold of new, original content just like you can do. On episode 14 I had my dear friend Jules Brooks on and it’s her business to help teach people how to keep themselves into the media. So, go back and have a listen to that one too if you haven’t already. If you have a blog, write articles for LinkedIn or write long captions for Instagram, then you are there – you have content. The trick is putting it out to the media first – before you publish it as they want original content that hasn’t been published before. But if you have a fabulous piece you’ve already written, well then re-write it – juice it up a little – make old new again and put it out to the world. How do you know who to write too or send your articles too – google – google is your best friend. Spend some time researching what your ideal clients or customers read, watch or subscribe too, google who’s in charge of the editorial department and reach out. If you have a good article, that’s full of value and isn’t promotional and has a fabulous photo with it – then you my friend are gold! CREATE A GOOGLE MY BUSINESS ACCOUNT. If you want your business to show up in local search, a Google My Business account is a necessity. This will make sure your business is not only visible on search, but on Google Maps as well. Having a google business account is becoming more and more important, especially since they shut down Google+. Your Google Business page can now look more like a mini, lead gathering website. There’s lots of features people miss or don’t take any notice of. So, invest time, go through each box, each google suggestion and fill out what you can, upload amazing photos that represents what you do and make your business google page sensational. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FACEBOOK'S AND GOOGLE’S FREE AD CREDITS. Facebook and Google are always giving away free ad credit vouchers. When you are signing up for services like web hosting or AdWords, take advantage of the free vouchers they offer and take PPC advertising for a test drive. Just make sure if you’re checking back on the results. Yes, it’s free and you are using the offered credits, but you still want maximum traction. So, and this applies to ANY online paid marketing, when you’re set something up, make sure you ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS check back on the advert after about 48 hours and check out the analytics. NEVER set and forget. HAVE AN AMAZING REACH OUT STRATEGY ON SOCIAL MEDIA Now because I only have 7 tips today – I wasn’t going to waste one of them on saying “have a presence of social media”. I think or hope in 2019 that that’s a little obvious. Maybe you need to work out which platform is best, but at least you’ve got a presence. I will just say one more thing, before I move onto the actual point of having a reach out strategy and that is to go and have a look at your Social media profiles. Have you filled out all the boxes, do the links work, if you’ve got your homepage listed as your website, is that the best place to be sending them, is there any spelling errors, do you need to change anything? If it’s been a while since you created your social platforms, then consider taking my 5 days social media challenge to make sure you’ve got it smicko! Go to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/challenge Ok, so I’m assuming you’ve got your social platforms all sorted, so now it’s time for people to find you. One of the tactics that isn’t implemented enough in most people’s businesses is a reach out strategy. What is it? What it says. Stop waiting for people to find you. Get out there. Like pages as your business page. Comment in groups as your business (or yourself). Join groups. Give value, value, value so that people are so curious who this amazing, value giving small business owner is, that they search you up and join your world. This is how you use social media is 2019. I absolutely guarantee it. You’ve got to give before you can get. No matter what platform or platforms you are on – start reaching out! POST AMAZING CONTENT Whether you have a blog (which you can have for free just putting that out there) or whether you post on social media, POST AMAZING CONTENT. You want potential customers or clients in your world to say “Oh my lordy, if she/he gives this sort of thing away for FREE, I wonder how brilliant the money costing content is …” This is the goal. Be so brilliant, they can’t afford to ignore you. What is amazing content? Well it varies from business to business, but it starts with you understanding what your prospects biggest challenges are and end with you solving it! It can be the written word, or it can be in video form – it just needs to be engaging. Just a hint though, we are pretty harsh on ourselves when it comes to our content and whether it’s amazeballs or not – so let your audience be the judge of that – put it out there and see if it resonates. Don’t stew over it – just do it! ALIGN YOURSELF WITH A CHARITY So, the last one is all about either aligning yourself with a charity, spending time in your community or sponsoring an event – maybe a charity or it could be a sporting event etc. For brand exposure, for showing people your business values, for keeping top of mind, you cannot go past this one! People do business with people they like – so you have to put yourself out there and well, get liked! Not sure if I’ve told this story or not previously, so apologies if I have, but in my retail days, I started a program or event called “Pay it Forward”. We aligned ourselves with the local Community Centre and became the drop off point for people who wanted to donate presents and goods to our Christmas appeal. It’s was like the Wishing Trees of the big retailers, but our gifts came from locals to locals. I am really proud of what we achieved, and it’s lived on even after we sold our shop – it’s now in the hands of my bestie Michelle at Judd’s – shout out to her! It bought people into our store who hadn’t been there before, it gave us a talking point to anyone who came in and helped us develop relationships with our customers on a whole new level that lasted way past December. It will go down in my life’s journey of one of the things I am most proud of. It didn’t really cost us a cent. But it firmly concreted, to our community, what our brand values were. Maybe for you it looks more like sponsoring with products – maybe your local school, your local sports club or even your local charity. Or giving an in-kind donation of your time. Either way, you want people to get to know you, your brand, stay top of mind and do business with people who know like and trust you – PLUS market your business for FREE – then this step is one you cannot go past. One of my businesses core values is be a giver – the more you help others, the more rewards you will enjoy. Now I guess I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t try to overachieve and give you a bonus tip! This one very much aligns with the one we’ve just chatted about but it’s more strategic, more marketingish (sorry if that’s not a word) and well it’s one some of my listeners will roll their eyes at or shake their head. It’s NETWORKING. So, your bonus tip for getting your business marketed on a shoestring budget is, attend local networking events. And a pro-tip for attending networking events, to get the absolute most out of them and be the person EVERYONE remembers is – be the listener NOT the talker. Be the question asker rather than the question answerer! Everyone’s favourite subject is themselves, so if you ask great questions about them, they are like to remember you fondly rather than the person who just wouldn’t shut up about themselves – what was their name? That tip is how you do networking well. Check out local business events on Meetup.com or see what events your local chamber or small business association is hosting. Or google business networking in your area. If there’s not one – start one. My friend in Beechworth, Karen, she organises just a coffee at the local bakery every Wednesday (I think) and invites whoever is free and available and would like to come – so maybe just start there. It’s a topic for another Podcast, but I can tell you that surrounding myself with like-minded business owners who would support me, challenge me, cheer me and celebrate with me was THE best thing I’ve done in business. Just a plug too, if you’re in North East Victoria, where I am, and you’re looking for a networking place – come join me and my group in Yarrawonga – 3rd Wednesday evening of each month. I have an amazing bunch of people who give so freely to help others as well as learn from our guest speakers or myself. Get in touch or check out Instagram @yarrawongabizhub Now – go get social and continue this conversation in my Facebook Group – Like Minded Business Owners. I’d love to hear your thoughts. But that’s all for Episode 21 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thanks for listening in. I’ll be back next Thursday with some more marketing know-how and another discovery of course. Have you joined my Facebook Group I’m building called Like Minded Business Owners – I’d love you to join – just search Like Minded Business Owners on Facebook! I know we all belong to lots of groups on Facebook so I’ve been pondering what I can do that’s different – so, again, I am making the commitment to go, at least once a week to help YOU my listen and those in my world with their biggest challenges or those burning marketing and social media questions. I’m going to go live every Thursday. So if you’d like to connect and get social on social – head over and join my group. I would LOVE you to come over and say HI! Maybe leave me a question your grappling with and I’ll answer it live for you! So, onto day’s episode. Most business owners I know want to grow their business. Some to big heights some to lower heights – everyone’s goals and expectations for their business is different to the next. But regardless of how big you want to get, today I have some 7 tips on how you can accelerate the growth of your business. I just know that you’ll get some great ideas from listening in. But first, of course, our discovery of the week. THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! This week’s discovery is an app that’s on my phone and I am falling in love with it more and more – I just know we are going to be best friends very soon – it’s called Unfold. Unfold is a toolkit for storytellers. Create beautiful and engaging stories from minimal and elegant templates. Available now for iOS and Android. The app is free although does have more templates if you are willing to put some dollars in – as with all apps these days. Although it’s built for Instagram Stories – it does so stories for other platforms as well. If you’re not into stories, then I’m sorry but frankly you need to be. They are were the eyes are at at the moment. With the insane number of something like 400 million daily active users you cannot not be there! Perhaps head back to Episode 7 of this podcast where I talk about INSTAGRAM STORIES – THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE SENSATIONAL! The link is in my show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au or just check back on the app you are listening in on now! If you are into stories, then you are also going to love this app. Give it a try and maybe tag me in your story when you use it – I’d love to see them! My tag is @smallbusinessmadesimple Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you’d like to share, please do so. Email me at jenn@jenndonovan.com.au or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! 7 SURE-FIRE WAYS TO ACCELERATE THE GROWTH OF YOUR BUSINESS Ok, 7 sure fire ways to accelerate the growth of your business – let’s do this. Whether you want massive growth or just to reach that goal so you can have more freedom from your business – these tips are bound to make your think, stretch and maybe even just reinforce what you already know! Find a Mentor Every small business owner is on a journey, the only difference is how far along the track they’ve travelled. Finding a mentor who is further down the track and who has already faced and broken through the challenges you are confronting is one of the most effective ways to accelerate your progress. Finding a mentor can mean paying one, like clients pay me, or it can mean simply following someone on social media and signing up for all their freebies and getting all you can from them – maybe it’s someone in your world like a friend who’s just a little ahead of where you want to be and you can shout them wine or coffee in exchange for wisdom. My beautiful friend Vicki, shout out to Victoria Joy, and I were having a conversation the other week and she was saying how a podcast she was listening too recommended that people my age (I’m 44) and above even have a Millennial as a mentor! I haven’t stopped thinking about that since! My tip here is don’t have too many mentors. I found one – very early on. I’ve paid enormous money to my mentor over the past 10 years, but every single cent has been well spent. Everything was a lesson – the good, the bad and the darn right ugly at times too. But I wouldn’t change it, any of it, for the world. It’s got me here and I like it here! So, choose 1 or 2 people you trust and are aligned with your values and vision and follow them, listen to them. Too many opinions from too many people will not accelerate your growth but more than likely inhibit it! Just keep that in mind. Find your tribe. Learn to Market your Talent You may not know this, but you already have all the talent you need to succeed. I see this all the time, people thinking they need to get the next degree, the next certificate, the next qualification and THEN the money will come in. No, it won’t. You ARE talented enough right now. Need to hear that again – come closer to the microphone – YOU ARE TALENTED ENOUGH RIGHT NOW! You just need to become a better marketer of what you do. Become better at putting yourself out there as the expert in your field. I don’t crap on about more video and putting your face all over your marketing more often for nothing – it’s strategic – you need to be known as the expert and if you’re never out there how can we know! Become a better marketer of what you do! Connect with a Community If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together (African Proverb). Build your tribe or find your tribe as I mentioned before. Surrounding myself with like-minded, forward thinking small business owners who push me, challenge me and celebrate with me is the BEST, by far, thing I have ever done in business. Isolation is one of the biggest hidden killers of business. Currently I have a tribe of amazing small business owners in my local Business Development Group in Yarrawonga where I live, but at the end of the year, my goal is to have a Mastermind Group – made up of amazing go getters – maybe that’s you. Maybe you might need to keep your eyes out for that one later in the year! Be Careful who you Share your Dreams with. Oh, this is one my mentor taught me – very early on. Never have entrepreneurial conversations with non-entrepreneurs. In other words, don’t have business conversations with people who have no freakin idea what it takes to run a business. Because it hard. It’s real hard – you know that. Even those who love you most, and often from the best-intentioned places, will try to save you from making mistakes or taking a risk. But that is not how you build a business. We learn so much from mistakes and risks and for some of us that’s how we are built – people who don’t understand will crush that – don’t let them crush you …. Ready Fire Aim For those of you listening who have shared my journey or shared my mentor at any stage will be very familiar with this one. My mentor taught me very early on “the world doesn’t need someone else aiming to do something”. We just need to do it. Ready, Fire, Aim. Of course, sometimes I take this a little too far and find myself building things on the fly, but so far, ready fire aim has served me well. There are two types of entrepreneurs in the world, those who aim to do things and those who do it. The fact is the world doesn’t need any more people aiming to act. What we need is people willing to FIRE. Success comes quickest to those that do, so remember its progress before perfection. Build a Movement The fact is that as humans we want to belong to something bigger than ourselves. So, if you can align your values with the values of the people you attract, then you can build a movement. And the speed of that growth will be determined by the size of your movement. If you don’t know what your values are – then there’s some homework. Write down the core values of your business and start aligning them with your expertise, your marketing and the audience you are attracting. Your Business will Never Outperform you This one – well it’s quite possibly why you are listening to this podcast and listen to others as well. Brendan Fevola played 204 AFL games with the Carlton and Brisbane Lions football clubs over a twelve year period. His career included 623 goals, two Coleman Medals, being a three time All Australian and leading goal scorer with the Carlton Football Club for seven consecutive years. In this episode 'Fev' explains why he has no regrets choosing to accept that things happened for a reason and that he needed to go through difficult times to get to where he is today, and why he struggled to open up and tell people what he was going through. 'Fev' talks candidly to host Wayne Schwass about how his way of dealing with boredom was to use alcohol and gambling, openly admitting he gambled away an entire year's salary. This larger than life personality still can't explain why he would spend hours reading on-line football forums every night for years looking for approval without recognising the significantly negative impact this was having on his health, wellbeing and importantly his ability to perform as an AFL athlete. A 68 day stay in a mental health facility whilst still being a contracted AFL player with the Brisbane Lions Football Club, going on to win "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here" and his eventual move to Yarrawonga to play local football were key decisions that helped him change his life. Brendan also speaks about the influence his ex-wife now fiancee, Alex has had on his life.
The key forward took time out from his studies in the US to play a key role in the Magpies’ victory over Yarrawonga in the Ovens and Murray preliminary final.
