Greg Snitkin and Glenn Davis have collaborated on two crosswords, both Fridays, and both fantabulous. Today's had some novelties, including 3 superb debuts: 14A, Winning like crazy, ONAHEATER (woah!); the award-winning 34A, Stealthy flier, AIRMARSHAL (hey, what happened to the second L??); and the equally splendid 61A, He's great for the time being, MRRIGHTNOW (brilliant!).In addition to today's puzzle, we have a fun fact for Fun Fact Friday, and if the suspense of what that might be is getting to you, here's a BIG hint: look to today's episode title.Show note imagery: In 2017, the Monopoly boot token got the ... wait for it ... boot!
Foundations of Amateur Radio Putting your station together is best described as a juggling act, since you'll discover that everything depends on everything else and the more you plan, the more you learn and the more variables become apparent, none more so than with the selection of an antenna. Antennas are endlessly variable. To give you a taste, imagine a loop of wire, shaped like a circle. As you stretch the circle, it becomes an oval, if you pull on four corners, it's a square, pull it tight between two points and it more or less becomes a single wire. In other words, one piece of wire can essentially make an infinite number of antennas, and we haven't even varied the material, length, thickness or coating. So, to discuss antennas is to embark on a lifelong journey of exploration and me telling you to get one over another is not going to help, instead I'd like to discuss some considerations that you might not have encountered. The obvious issue of space is generally the first consideration. Then there's the neighbours and their sense of aesthetics, or lack thereof. There's local laws to abide by and sometimes permissions and permit requirements, though in many cases it seems that seeking forgiveness is a quicker route to success. Your Mileage May Vary. Talk to your local amateur club. There's the property owner to consider. If that's you, great, drill away, if not, you will need to tailor your antenna selection to the amount of renovations required. If you live in a restricted location where there are all manner of rules about the things that you cannot do, you might need to think carefully about your options. Stealthy antennas are a thing. As I've said previously, inside your roof might be an option, but there are others. Some examples to consider. If there's a TV aerial on your roof, will that look similar to a 70cm Yagi, or could it hide a 2m vertical? Do you have a metal gutter which might act as an antenna, or could you use Christmas light clips to hang a wire antenna from your gutters? Could you hide a vertical in a plastic down-pipe? Could you dangle a ladder-line antenna out a window at night, or use thin wire to hold up your plants while hiding your antenna in the garden, or can you use a beverage antenna that's lying on the ground, or hidden under the fence capping? Could you tune up your fence for that matter? In other ways to make your hobby look invisible in plain sight, could you use an antenna that looks like a roof vent, or if you're into moon bounce, could you repurpose a satellite dish? Could you make your outdoor washing line into an antenna or add a flagpole vertical antenna that also happens to soothe your vexillology sensibilities? While we're talking stealth, you can paint your antenna to match the decor. To get your antenna up in the air, could you use a length of wood, a pool cleaning or painters pole, strapped to your pergola, gazebo, balcony railing, or some other existing structure? Can you use the edging of a shade sail, professionally installed, it comes complete with mounting points. It doesn't stop there, I've heard of several amateurs who managed to park a sailboat, with the mast up, in their driveway without ever once floating it in a nearby body of water. Of course this is not exhaustive, nor is it meant to be, it's really a trigger to think about some options you might not have discovered. In other words, if you need stealth, you can be creative, rather than buy an antenna off the shelf. Speaking of buying off the shelf, there's nothing quite like buying a wonderful antenna, the answer to all your questions, only to discover that it needs tuning and tweaking, to the point where you might spend a year getting familiar with all its quirks. That's not to discourage you from picking that path, just to warn you that there is no such thing as the perfect antenna. If you are less space restricted, building a tower or a mast, the difference being that a tower stands all by itself, like the one in Paris, a mast needs guy-wires to keep it up. You'll likely need to consider failure, engineering standards and concrete, not to mention maintenance. So, how do you go about selecting the perfect antenna to suit your needs? In the same way that a magician pulls a rabbit from a hat. In other words, there's a trick. It's pretty simple, start small. With that I mean, start with a simple wire antenna. It will achieve a number of things that only experience will give you. For starters, it will prove that your shack works. As-in, end-to-end. That might not sound like a big deal, but there are many different moving parts in building a successful shack, making your first contact is going to be a milestone worth logging, more on that another day. While making your first contact is momentous, getting an antenna in the air will also allow you to hear what your neighbourhood sounds like. Is it completely RF quiet, in which case, where do you live and do you have a spare bedroom? The reality is, for most of us, local RF noise is the norm when setting up your station. Noise is a whole other topic and I'll get into that next time. I haven't said anything at this point about your living circumstances, but it should be obvious that anyone you're living with needs to be on-board with your adventures, so discuss your plans and concerns. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, has delivered the Autumn Budget 2025. In her much-anticipated second Budget, the Chancellor announced a broad spectrum of tax measures which she said were designed both to secure public finances and make the UK tax system fairer. After much press speculation, rumours and reported U-turns, there is now some welcome clarity on how the government intends to balance the books, with the largest revenue raising measure being a stealth tax increase through the freezing of income tax thresholds. Outside of the headline grabbing measures, the government has published details on new and ongoing business tax reform measures, a number of which will be included in the upcoming Finance Bill. In our latest podcast, Josh Critchlow speaks to May Smith, Emily Szasz and Sam Withnall from our London tax team about the smorgasbord of business tax measures they found most noteworthy in the Autumn Budget 2025, including: headline tax revenue raising measures including extending the freeze on income tax/NICs thresholds and raising income tax rates on dividend, savings and property income; the introduction of a new ‘UK listing relief' from SDRT, providing a 3 year exemption from the 0.5% SDRT charge on agreements to transfer securities of newly listed companies on a UK regulated market; confirmation that an ‘Advance Tax Certainty Service' for major investment projects in the UK will be launched in July 2026; changes to the capital allowances regime, including a new 40% first-year allowance and reduction of writing down allowances for main rate expenditure; broadening an anti-avoidance rule applicable to capital gains rollover relief on share exchanges and reorganisations; an update on proposals to reform behavioural tax penalties; revisions to the UK VAT grouping rules applicable to overseas establishments; confirmation that a permanent revenue-based oil and gas price mechanism will take effect on expiry of the existing Energy Profits Levy; additional measures to tackle tax avoidance; and measures not included in the Budget announcements, including the rumoured ‘partnership NICs' and exit tax.

ITPM Flash provides insight into what professional traders are thinking about in the markets RIGHT NOW! In this episode, Edward Shek revisits the SaaS de-rating theme before shifting focus to a stealth data center trade in Chemours (CC). Despite years of “tough love” as a low-growth cyclical, the stock is 50% off the summer lows and now has three clear catalysts in refrigeration, cost savings, and legal overhangs. The real excitement, however, lies in next-gen liquid cooling, where CC's Opteon technology has just hit commercial qualification with Samsung — the SSD market leader. With partnerships lining up, a forward P/E of 10, and potential rerating upside, Ed outlines a long-dated vertical call spread into January 2026 that could deliver a five-bagger if Chemours becomes a genuine data center winner.

In this episode, we shine a light on one of the most misunderstood forms of narcissistic abuse……..the covert narcissist. Unlike the loud, arrogant narcissist that many imagine, the covert narcissist operates in far more subtle and insidious ways. They may seem shy, quiet, or even vulnerable to the outside world but behind closed doors, the manipulation runs deep. In this episode, I explore: • What makes covert narcissistic abuse so hard to identify • Why survivors often doubt themselves and struggle to explain what's happening • How covert narcissists use guilt, shame, victimhood, and passive aggression to control • The impact this has on your nervous system, your confidence, and your sense of self • The signs to look for if you think you're dealing with one Whether you're beginning to question your relationship or you've already escaped and are rebuilding, this episode will give you the clarity and validation you need. Understanding covert narcissism is a crucial step in healing because once you can name it, you can begin to untangle from it. The tax and spending bill passed by House Republicans last week is the sort of bill that does so many different things that even budget experts could be forgiven for not realizing just how many different parts of the economy it will change. In the realm of workers' comp, the bill would eliminate taxes on overtime pay and tips. In terms of families, it would create new $1,000 savings accounts for children and give parents an extra $500 per year per child, in the form of an expanded child tax credit. In the realm of health and the culture wars, it would ban the use of Medicaid funds for gender-affirming care and cut funding for Planned Parenthood. In the realm of climate, it would claw back half a trillion dollars of investments in wind, solar, geothermal, batteries, nuclear power, clean hydrogen, and electric vehicle purchases. In the realm of defense, it would increase spending by over $100 billion on shipbuilding, air and missile defense, immigration enforcement, and border security. But judging strictly by the sheer dollar amount of the provision, this bill is really about three big things. Number one, it extends a multitrillion-dollar tax cut on corporate and individual income. Number two, it reduces federal spending on two major government programs by a combined $1 trillion: Medicaid, the government health-care program for those with low income, and SNAP, or federal spending on food stamps. And number three, because of the mismatch I just told you about, between the tax cuts and the spending cuts, it will increase the national debt by several trillion dollars over the next 10 years. Today, we have two guests. First, the University of Chicago economist Eric Zwick joins to talk about the corporate tax cut. And second, to understand how to think about the debt picture, I talk to Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email us at PlainEnglish@Spotify.com. The seemingly outsized strength of cold-formed steel is not well-known. In this episode, earthquake engineer Ben Schafer, Johns Hopkins University, describes a research-industry collaboration with the automotive industry resulting in code changes for high-strength sheet-steel. Sheet steel has also been successfully tested in flooring systems. The upcoming CFS10 shake table test at UC San Diego is the high-rise building test for cold-formed steel. Schafer addresses misconceptions that structural engineers have regarding CFS: Basically: cold-formed steel looks too thin to be strong. However, with high-strength sheet steel, deformations do not correlate to lack of strength, which is something that automotive and aircraft engineers have long understood.

Chris Canfield's company, Suspension Formulas, develops and licenses mountain bike suspension designs used by brands including Revel and Canfield Bikes. Now he's launching his own bike brand, Vampire Bikes while also continuing to race DH at the Masters level. In 2019 you won the UCI Masters World Championship at Mont St. Anne when you were in your 40s. What's allowed you to be so fast for so long? How much of DH racing is about equipment vs. rider? Did you get involved in building bikes out of necessity, or was it something you really enjoyed from the beginning? Tell us about the Canfield Balance Formula suspension design. Is it primarily focused on pedal efficiency? What does "controlled braking" mean? Is designing suspension for a DH bike easier in some ways since you aren't as concerned about pedal efficiency? CF3 is a newer, patent pending suspension design. How is that different from CBF? With the expiration of the original DW Link patent, does this open opportunities for new designs and/or improvements? Is it difficult working with bike brands as a suspension designer? Does your design end up getting compromised in some ways? What does the Vampire Bikes customer look like? What do you make of recent news about athletes launching their own bike brands? What do you think is driving this? You can follow along with the launch of Vampire Bikes on Instagram @vampire_bikes and learn more about some of the suspension designs we discussed at suspension-formulas.com. --Keep up with the latest in mountain biking at Singletracks.com and on Instagram @singletracks

Describe the mission parameters, including the keywords Mysterious Vehicle. Mission Parameters: Quest for the Ring of Winter Objective: Retrieve the legendary Ring of Winter from the leader of the machine cult. Team: Tatters - The cunning and resourceful protagonist. The Vale Sisters - Tatters' loyal and formidable bodyguards, known for their combat prowess and tactical acumen. Mission Overview: Lord Tortemus has identified the leader of the machine cult as the current possessor of the Ring of Winter. This ancient artifact possesses immense power over ice and cold, making it a critical asset in the ongoing conflict. The cult has fortified itself within Hammerhold, the city's greatest forge and arsenal, located in the heart of Chaintop. Primary Objectives: Infiltrate the Stronghold: Gain access to the machine cult's heavily guarded fortress. Locate the Ring of Winter: Identify the exact location of the Ring within the stronghold. Retrieve the Artifact: Secure the Ring and ensure its safe return to Lord Tortemus. Secondary Objectives: Gather Intel: Collect valuable information on the machine cult's operations and technology. Neutralize Key Threats: Disable or eliminate high-ranking cult members and their mechanical constructs. Mysterious Vehicle: Investigate the rumored Mysterious Vehicle that the cult uses for transportation and potential escape. Operational Details: Transport: The team will travel via a swift magitech skimmer provided by Lord Tortemus, designed for stealth and speed. Entry Point: Utilize an old drainage tunnel as the entry point to bypass the main defenses. Reconnaissance: Deploy mini-drones for surveillance and mapping of the fortress interior. Engagement: The Vale sisters will handle combat encounters while Tatters focuses on securing the Ring. Potential Hazards: Mechanical Sentinels: The stronghold is patrolled by advanced automata designed to detect and neutralize intruders. Environmental Extremes: The presence of the Ring has caused unnatural cold within the fortress, creating hazardous conditions. Cult Defenders: Devoted and fanatical cultists, equipped with magitech weaponry, will fiercely defend their leader and the Ring. Mission Success Criteria: Successful retrieval of the Ring of Winter. Safe return of Tatters and the Vale sisters. Acquisition of valuable intelligence on the machine cult. Failure Conditions: Loss of the Ring to enemy forces. Capture or incapacitation of team members. Incomplete mission objectives due to unanticipated threats. Mission Commences: 18:00 hours, local time. Genre: magitech. Describe an automated factory stronghold, at the heart of the industrial Chaintop area of Kyras, capital city of the Kyras Dominion. The air in Chaintop hummed with a low, insistent thrum. Gears ground, pistons hissed, and the glow of arcane forges cast long, dancing shadows across cobbled streets. At the heart of this industrial behemoth stood the Bastion of Gears, a fortress unlike any other. Appearance: Exterior: Hammerhold was a brutalist masterpiece, a symphony of iron and obsidian. Massive, interlocking gears formed the very walls, their teeth catching the light in a mesmerizing display. Arcane sigils, etched in shimmering gold, pulsed with an eerie light, warding off unwanted attention. Interior: A labyrinth of corridors, each a testament to magitech ingenuity. Production Halls: Gargantuan machines, powered by a combination of steam and arcane energy, churned out weapons, armor, and intricate gears. Dwarven engineers, their faces grim with concentration, monitored the intricate dance of pistons and pulleys. Assembly Lines: Goblins, their nimble fingers a blur of motion, assembled intricate magitech contraptions. From miniature clockwork automatons to devastating siege engines, each piece was crafted with meticulous care. Forges: Arcane forges, fueled by rare crystals, roared to life, casting a blinding light. Dwarven smiths, their bodies glowing with an otherworldly aura, hammered and shaped molten metal into weapons of terrifying beauty and power. Defenses: Arcane Shields: An invisible, shimmering barrier enveloped the bastion, deflecting projectiles and absorbing minor magical attacks. Auto-Cannon Turrets: Ironclad turrets, bristling with arcane-powered cannons, rotated menacingly, ready to unleash a barrage of fire upon any intruders. Clockwork Golems: Massive, iron golems, their movements fluid and deadly, patrolled the perimeter, their eyes glowing with malevolent intelligence. The Heart of Hammerhold: Deep within the fortress, in a chamber shielded by a dozen layers of arcane wards, resided the Engine of Creation, a masterpiece of magitech engineering. This colossal machine, powered by a captured celestial spirit, was the heart of Hammerhold, providing the raw energy that fueled the entire operation. Life Within Hammerhold: Hammerhold was a world unto itself. Dwarves, goblins, and humans, all bound by contracts of servitude, lived and worked within its walls. They were well-fed and well-compensated, but their lives were strictly regimented, their every move monitored by an intricate network of surveillance. Dissent was not tolerated. Hammerhold was a symbol of the Kyras Dominion's industrial might, its arsenal, a testament to the power of magitech. It was a fortress impregnable, a factory unmatched, and a constant reminder of the Dominion's unwavering pursuit of power. In this interview, we chat with "Rick and Morty Grows" from Bastard Genetics. Rick has been growing for over 20 years and has cultivated cannabis in many different ways. Right now, he's focused on breeding cannabis strains that don't look like traditional cannabis plants. These include varieties like Australian Bastard Cannabis, Frisian Duck, and Frisian Dew. We also discuss how cannabis was grown back in the day and the differences between growing landrace cannabis and wild cannabis. At some point, we even touch on growing cannabis while supplementing with CO2. It's a great and informative interview with very few tangents for a change! I hope you enjoy it. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres demands Israel halt counterterrorist operations in the ancient Jewish homeland of Judea and Samaria mounted in the face of explicit calls by the Palestinian Authority for a violent uprising there. As things stand now, the UN's Marxist leader will soon be able to order the Jewish State – or any other nation – to do what he dictates. Welcome to the new world government that such globalists intend to put irreversibly in train next week. Unless one or more nation objects by September 3rd, Team Guterres will set the stage for his totalitarian empowerment via an “Emergency Platform” at next month's “Summit of the Future.” An alarming briefing Tuesday sponsored by our Sovereignty Coalition revealed that the Harris-Biden administration strongly supports this unconstitutional surrender of our sovereignty. Will any other country's government stand up for theirs – and ours? This is Frank Gaffney.
