Obviously, the best time to go fishing is anytime you can get out on the water. But we all know that certain conditions tend to be more productive for lure fishos than others. And a common rule of thumb in fishing circles is: "If there's no run, there's no fun". Now, it's always a bit dodgy to take a single idea like this and apply it to all forms of fishing and all species of fish. So today we're exploring whether the "no run = no fun" rule fits every situation, and if so, how and why. After all, the more we understand about how fish respond to their environment the better we'll become at predicting their movements and behviours. Can fish hear us when we speak? Does the "ping" of a sounder transducer spook them into not eating? How does their sensitivity to noise change from species to species and location to location? In this episode we delve into the mistakes and mis-truths about how sound and noise affect fish behaviour and what we can do to increase our chances of presenting a lure to a fish that is unaware of our presence. _____________________________ This is an ALF PLUS episode, so my Team Doc Lures members are enjoying the extended version of this discussion, in which I explain 15 ways to snaek up on unsuspecting fish. Why is it that some fish can be attracted to a lure, whilst others are afraid of it? Why is it essential to be stealthy in some situations, but other times being noisy will result in more fish being caught? The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. One of favorites was the short film From The Depths (directed by Justin Robert Vinall, and starring Giovanni Accettola, Allegra Sweeney, Rebecca Rose). It's about a couple seeking to rebuild their troubled relationship. They travel to a remote lakehouse, but a malevolent presence lurks beneath the water's surface. The acting, cinematography and sound design are hypnotic....creating a realistic and surrealistic atmosphere at the same time. One feels like they are experiencing a strange nightmare, but realizing they are fully awake. Although Justin cites David Lynch (Blue Velvet , Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks) and Krzysztof Kieślowski (Three Colors Trilogy) as influences, his vision is unique and singular. We encourage you to check out Justin's other work at the links below. In many ways, there really isn't anything more important in your fishing kit than a quality pair of polarised sunglasses. We all know that quality sunglasses allow is to see through the water surface more clearly, but they also provide protection for our eyes against permanent damage from glare, UV and even the odd hook point. Chasing a few squid using prawn-style jigs should be on every fisho's agenda at some stage, I reckon. Ok, they won't pull you off your feet like a GT or smash a lure off the surface like a big cod (or not often, at least). But squid have a big brain and they're far smarter than any fish. Plus they are one of the most sustainable fishing species we have and a great source of super tasty, healthy protein. So today we're taking a little deeper look into the mysterious an comples world of Australia's most popular recreational squid species...... arrow squid, southern calamari and northern calamari. _______________ You're listening to a trailer of a "PLUS" episode. Soft plastic lures are incredibly versatile and can be fished for numeous species in just about any imaginable habitat. There seems to be a growing snobbery around the topic of lure fishing vs bait fishing. Yep, I gravitate toward lure fishing, but surely there is room for both. I'm not sure exactly why that is, but some of the commentary would suggest that elements of the lure fishing fraternity see bait fishing as being an "easy" way to catch fish. And by inference, lure fishing must therefore require more skill and those who catch fish on lures must be better anglers. I'd argue that bait fishing is easier for beginners to get results, and perhaps there is a greater possibility of "fluking" the occassional trophy fish on bait than on lures (maybe). But in many ways it's easier to catch larger numbers of fish on lures and often better quality fish, too. So when the question comes up "why would you fish with lures when you could catch more fish with bait?" I guess the answer has to be "the same reason you fish with bait when you could catch more fish on lures! _________________ If you're not having the success you'd like on lures, maybe it's time to get involved with Team Doc Lures? The humble flathead is an awesome sportfish and a great training ground for anyone wanting to explore lure fishing. Super accessible to most of the Australian population, often a very willing lure taker, gives a good account of itself on light tackle...... and pretty damn good on the chew if you want to take one or two home for a feed. In todays episode I explore a few interesting facts about flathead gleaned from the scentific literature. Understanding how different their vision is from that of other fish species, their use of their highly evolved body shape and the ways to get a lure in front of them and get it seen can help improve your results. ___________________ In the ad-free members version of today's episode we go even further, looking at the flatheads cone of vision, exploring whether UV is a factor and delving into their other sensory systems such and smell and vibration detection. This is a repost of an evergreen episode from the ALF 2022 Archive. In the golden age of marine electronics it can be tempting to get lazy and just head to a waypoint and start sounding around. But the disappearing skill of reading the water and recognising indicators is still vital to the most successful anglers. Magic happens when anglers use BOTH electronics and environmental indicators. _________________ Need more help finding fish? The widely-used adage ‘ you can't pick your family ' generally translates into making the best of what you have when you have no choice in the matter. People rarely have the option to choose who provides their mental and physical nourishment, especially children. How we handle relationships with relatives once we reach adulthood is up to us. But, if we have been subject to years of gaslighting or mental manipulation, it can be difficult to discern between what we believe is good for us and what we truly need to thrive. To dissect the cycle of both gaslighting and estrangement , Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with a therapist and a researcher about the complex relationships we engage in and disconnect from. Doctor of Psychology, Deborah Vinall offers an in-depth look at gaslighting, describes the key takeaways from her book, Gaslighting: A Step-by-Step Recovery Guide to Heal from Emotional Abuse and Build Healthy Relationships , and shares the steps people can take to set self- honoring boundaries when confronting a gaslighter. Kristina Sharp, Director of the Family Communication and Relationships Lab, at the University of Washington and Michigan State, describes her role as a researcher who studies estrangement from first-hand accounts of those who have severed ties with families and the misguided perception of what a family is as portrayed by American media.
Major flood events have unfortunately been a common occurrence across Eastern Australia over the past couple of years as a result of La Nina weather patterns - and the summer of 2022-23 looks like being more of the same. Much of this flooding has happened at times of year when rainfall is typically low, upsetting the "normal" hydrological cycles and causing fish to respond in some unusual ways. For many anglers this is a sign that it's time to hang the rods up for a bit and make a return to the water once the levels drop and the water clears. But in today's ALF episode we explore how fish respond to flood events in our rivers, estuaries and coastal zones, how to use that understanding to find fish and the styles of lures and techniques that can be effectve during an after flood events. Don't hang your fishing rods up, just use them differently, and in different locations! ___________________ Want more great fishing advice? I ask Deborah for helpful examples of what gaslighting is and what it isn't in order to help you see how it may be showing up in your life. To conclude, Deborah provides us with 4 key steps to end the insanity of gaslighting and embrace healthy boundaries. It's a must-listen! Thank you for supporting the show! What are your thoughts on her distinction between having a more passive or rebellious pattern as a child? We then shift to our main focus: gaslighting. Deborah answers what gaslighting is (an insidious pattern of behavior/emotional abuse used to undermind someone's confidence, self-trust, and intuition) and what gaslighting is not. This is super helpful as this is an over-used but under-understood word. We then discuss what gaslighting looks like in codependent relationships. I share aloud how I wonder if I gaslit my exes in the past, however, Deborah highlights how it really is a “pattern of emotional abuse.” We may gaslight others at times, however, it is important to focus on identifying the pattern. We conclude with the 4 steps Deborah suggests to combat gaslighting in your relationships: Awareness: identify, acknowledge, and admit Grieve Institute self-care, grace, and compassion Set and reinforce boundaries Yes, boundaries are scary but Deborah emphasizes how it's important to discern which type of fear it is: newness scary, safety-threatened scary, wanting-to-please-others scary, etc. Thanks for coming on Deborah! Questions for you: How did you feel when hearing Deborah's definition of codependency? How did it resonate or differ from your experience? Do you sense you took a more passive or rebellious road in childhood? How come? How has that served and debilitated you? What was your reaction to the definition of gaslighting? Where do you see gaslighting in your relationships (past and present)? Are there any steps that Deborah discussed (awareness, grieving, etc.) that you need to implement this week to rid gaslighting from your life? Thanks for listening! PLEASE: Rate. Review. Subscribe. Regardless of your current skill level, there is a lot to be said for engaging with a sportfishing guide. If you're fishing away from your home waters you'll usually have very limited time to figure out the fish, the tides and conditions, but a day or two with a guide can quickly get you up to speed. Even on your home waters there is usually plenty that can be learned from someone who's livelihood depends on being able to guide their clients to fish day in, day out. I talk to a lot of fishing guides and also receive a lot of requests from ALF listeners who are looking for help to find the right guide for them. So I'm testing a platform for connecting my listeners with their ideal fishing guide. Check it out at https://doclures.com/guides/
Water temperatures, and in particular changes in water temperature, fundamentally affect how fish behave, where they hang out and what they eat. So it stands to reason that by undrestanding how fish respond to temperature we can get a better sense of where we'll find them in a water body and the lures and techniques that will catch them.
In almost every episode where my guest is making their debut on the Australian Lure Fishing Podcast I ask the question "What's something we'd find in your tackle box that the average angler probably wouldn't have in their tackle box?" Of the whole interview this is often the question that most guests find the hardest to answer. So today I've turned the microphone back on myself and asked the same question. _______________ Want some help to catch more fish on lures?
