Otitis is a common thing for veterinarians to treat. Commonly associated with underlying allergies, we can see other things cause ear infection such as ear canal masses, endocrinopathies, etc. When you are busy in the clinic, it can be hard to think about every aspect of ear canal disease. Due to technical difficulties and schedules, we ended up taking an unforeseen sabbatical. But we're back!! Veteran RAMmers know that cohost Aaron is a killer musician. And his weapon of choice is the bass. So he's been gnawing at the bit to do an episode "all about the bass!" Our Rush correspondent Mr. Mark Buell is also pretty handy with said instrument. So we figured it's a good time to geek out, yacking about the four strings. We go over our discovery of the bass, our signatures and some of our fave bassists. This week my guest is—me [34:55].  I asked Reid Bryant of the Orvis Wingshooting Podcast to interview me because I have worked at Orvis for 49 of those 50 years and lived through the various stages of Orvis rods, plus I just spent the past two months writing a history of the Orvis graphite rods. You'll learn about some interesting things that went on during those times that have never before been published. Some of them are quite surprising. In the Fly Box this week, I answer these questions and more: What hatch makes large brown trout leap fully out of the water? Is there a hook sizing standard for fly-tying hooks? How can I hide the final whip finish on my bead head nymphs? What characteristics make for a good prospecting dry fly? What do you recommend for a fly-tying light? Can I use heaver hooks on my small nymphs? My lighter hooks keep getting straightened by large trout. Is there a database for fly fishing locations around the world? I travel a lot and like to fish various places. What rod should I travel with if I have no idea what I will fish for? What flies should I carry that will work anywhere in the world? What type of fly line should I put on older fiberglass and bamboo rods?

It started with a cheat. I jacked a foam-folding technique from Charlie Craven (legendary fly tier) and started riffing. I was fishing the Upper Kern, and those trout were demolishing grasshoppers. Like full-on buffet mode. So I tied up something massive—ugly from the top, perfect from below—and boom. The Kern River rainbows went nuts. I named it the Huck Hopper. Fast forward a few years: I'm fishing around the world. Behind guides' backs, I quietly swap in my Frankenfly. Next thing you know, they're demanding to know what it is. And I'm FedExing Huck Hoppers at 3 a.m. because some poor guy “needs ‘em for Patagonia.” I even spun up an e-comm site. “Nobody will buy them,” I thought. Wrong. Principle: Sometimes, what sets you apart isn't how polished your idea is—it's how deeply it solves a problem only insiders truly understand. Real traction often comes from obsession and imperfection—not slick branding or mass appeal. Transition: A lot of outdoor entrepreneurs and creators make the same mistake I almost did: thinking your thing has to be perfect or pretty before it's worth sharing. Or worse—waiting for permission. The truth? Your “ugly” prototype might be someone else's holy grail. That's why so many talented people stall out: they're waiting to be validated, to be “ready,” or for some guru to give them the green light.
