Cyber threats are evolving – but U.S. cyber policy coordination is still lagging behind. Four years after the establishment of the Office of the National Cyber Director, the Trump administration has a unique opportunity to establish stronger central coordination and drive meaningful improvements in how the federal government secures and defends cyberspace. How should the administration clarify and reinforce the role of the National Cyber Director? How can the administration create a more structured and accountable interagency cyber community? How can these structures set clearer national priorities and achieve the goals of deterring adversaries and advancing national resilience in cyberspace? To discuss these issues and more, FDD's Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation (CCTI) hosts a virtual conversation with former National Cyber Director Chris Inglis and John Costello, senior advisor to CSC 2.0, an initiative housed at FDD to continue the work of the congressionally mandated Cyberspace Solarium Commission. The conversation is moderated by RADM (Ret.) Mark Montgomery, senior director of CCTI and former executive director of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission with introductions by Dr. Samantha Ravich, Chair of FDD's Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation. For more, check out: https://www.fdd.org/events/2025/03/12/coaching-thecyberteam-the-future-of-the-office-of-the-national-cyber-director-and-cyber-governance/

I have done lots of these Embedded Executive podcasts, a few hundred in fact. This particular podcast goes in a direction I have never gone before, and involves the mafia (yes, you read that correctly). John Costello, who serves as the Corporate Vice President Government Affairs for Microchip Technology, has some stories to tell that involve members of his (literal) family, and their dealings on the dark side. John wrote a book called Executive Hoodlum that's extremely interesting and we cover some of what he wrote about. Definitely check out this week's Embedded Executives podcast.
On this episode of Embedded Insiders, Brandon and Rich explore the imminent ratification of the MATTR standard and what opportunities it could introduce in real, regular life situations.Next, Brandon and Rich are once again joined by Corporate VP of Government Affairs at Microchip Technology, John Costello, for part two of their discussion on state-of-the-art vs. state-of-the-practice in semiconductor manufacturing, and where the weight of the CHIPS Act should be thrown. Finally, associate editor Tiera Oliver is joined by Gary Jackson, CEO of intelligent automation company Drishti and Huri Mendoza, Head of Operational Excellence Electronics at HELLA, an automotive parts supplier, to understand how Drishti's AI gesture and action recognition technology helped HELLA streamline their automotive production process.
On this episode of the Embedded Insiders, Brandon and Rich discuss whether the IoT is “newer” than M2M or connected embedded, or has the name just changed while the definition remains the same? Perhaps it's not new, it's just moved to the edge and adopted “new” capabilities.Later, Brandon and Rich are joined by John Costello, Corporate Vice President of Government Affairs at Microchip Technology, to discuss the state-of-the-art vs. the state-of-the-practice and which of the two the U.S. government should be funding. The decision is all wrapped up in a piece of legislation known as the CHIPS Act. Finally, ECD Assistant Editor, Taryn Engmark, takes a peak into the future of EV charging infrastructure with Dunstan Power, Director of ByteSnap Design and Preye Ivry, network innovation engineer at Nortech Management Ltd. The three highlight the design, development, and testing of an EV discharge platform under the VehIcle-to-Grid Intelligent controL Project, also known as VIGIL.Read about VIGIL in, " Success Story: How Electric Vehicles Can Give Back to the Grid."

Asthma is a condition where your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult, and trigger coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.Asthma is one of the most common long-term diseases in children, but adults can have asthma, too. Symptoms of asthma include: Shortness of breath. Chest tightness or pain. Wheezing when exhaling, which is a common sign of asthma in children. Trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing. Coughing or wheezing attacks worsened by a respiratory virus, such as a cold or the flu. "People with asthma have an irritable, hyperresponsive airway," says Dr. John Costello, a consultant pulmonologist at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London. "Many asthmatics will tell you that if they laugh, or if there's strong fumes from the back of a car or something like that, that will make them cough much more easily than a normal person."For some people, asthma is just a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Maintaining good day-to-day asthma control is the key to keeping symptoms at bay and preventing asthma attacks. On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Costello discusses how to manage asthma in adults.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is the third leading cause of death worldwide according to the World Health Organization. COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. The main cause of COPD in developed countries is tobacco smoking. In the developing world, COPD often occurs in people exposed to fumes from burning fuel for cooking or heating in poorly ventilated homes. People with COPD are at increased risk of other diseases too, such as heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of other conditions. Although COPD is a progressive disease, it is also treatable. "If you catch it at an early phase, treatment may consist of helping the patient to stop smoking or taking the patient away from the polluted environment that may be contributing to the disease," says Dr. John Costello, a consultant pulmonologist at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London. "For those with more advanced disease, long term rehabilitation programs have been very successful in centers that specialize in pulmonary disease."As a part of rehabilitation, treatment for advanced COPD can include the use of medications, inhalers and oxygen therapy. On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Costello discusses how COPD is diagnosed and the treatment options for COPD.
Our interview is with Mark Montgomery and John Costello, both staff to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. The commission, which issued its main report more than a year ago, is swinging through the pitch, following up with new white papers, draft legislative language and enthusiastic advocacy for its recommendations in Congress, many of which were adopted last year. That makes it the most successful of the many cybersecurity commissions that have come and gone in Washington. And it's not done yet. Mark and John review several of the most important legislative proposals the commission will be following this year. I don't agree with all of them, but they are all serious ideas and it's a good bet that a dozen or more could be adopted in this Congress. In the news roundup, David Kris and I cover the FBI's use of a single search warrant to remove a large number of web shells from computers infected by China's irresponsible use of its access to Microsoft Exchange. The use of a search (or, more accurately, a seizure warrant) is a surprisingly far-reaching interpretation of Federal Criminal Rule 41. But despite valiant efforts, David is unable to disagree with my earlier expressed view that the tactic is lawful. Brian Egan outlines what's new in the Biden administration's sanctions on Russia for its SolarWinds exploits. The short version: While some of the sanctions break new ground, as with Russian bonds, they do so cautiously. Paul Rosenzweig, back from Costa Rica, unpacks a hacking story that has everything—terrorism, the FBI, Apple, private sector hacking and litigation. Short version: we now know the private firm that saved Apple from the possibility of an order to hack its own phone. It's an Australian firm named Azimuth that apparently only works for democratic governments but that is nonetheless caught up in Apple's bully-the-cybersecurity-researchers litigation campaign. Gus Hurwitz talks to us about the seamy side of content moderation (or at least on seamy side) – the fight against “coordinated inauthentic behaviour.” In quicker takes, Paul gives us a master class in how to read the intel community's Annual Threat Assessment. David highlights what may be the next Chinese telecom manufacturing target, at least for the GOP, after Huawei and ZTE. I highlight the groundbreaking financial industry breach notification rule that has finished and is moving toward adoption. And Gus summarizes the state of Silicon Valley antitrust legislation—everyone has a bill—so no one is likely to get a bill. Fresh off the boat from Las Vegas, and battling some serious jetlag, Rapaport news editor Avi Krawitz and publisher John Costello pick out their key takeaways and favorite moments from the JCK show.
Meet John Costello, the VP of Business Development and Government Relations for a $6 billion corporation in the advanced-semiconductor market. He was born into a working-class neighborhood on Chicago’s north side and grew up under difficult conditions. His father was a talented Italian tenor with mob connections and a proclivity for violence. His mother, the daughter of an Irish street cop, was a straight-laced Catholic girl until she took to the bottle after falling victim to that violence. Now the author of Executive Hoodlum, John is ready to reveal his life to the world. It has been a strange blend of two distinct worlds, but with one foot firmly placed in each. The fact that he is comfortable meeting with well-known senators in the morning to discuss government business, and can then enjoy the company of old friends from the streets of Chicago in the evening, is indicative of his parallel lives and will certainly be something audiences find intriguing. Independent brokerages offer many great opportunities and benefits, but they require a leader with vision and focus. Why is culture so important in this model, and how do you make it something real and tangible at every level of the business? How can you create a collaborative environment? On this episode, independent brokerage leader John Costello shares on what it takes to go from 20 to 170 agents in 2.5 years. Three Things We Learned From This Episode Why John switched from flipping to buy-and-hold As more contractors have gotten into flipping, the profit margins have shrunk. You’ll find yourself bidding against people who can do the work cheaper. John switched his strategy to a "buy and hold" model. From a profitability standpoint, putting 20-30% down and then earning between $500 and $1,000 a month is a solid return. The benefits of livestream training Offering livestream training to agents creates a huge learning opportunity at their own convenience. It’s evergreen, they can consume the content from anywhere, and they can never give the excuse that training wasn't made accessible to them. The biggest mistake agents make One of the biggest mistakes new agents make is jumping onto too many things to the point where they never really get any traction. What really helps you get moving in the beginning is consistency and long-term thinking, not short-term gratification. Independent brokerages are ships that can move and steer easily and quickly, but running them correctly still requires planning and real intention. Success for independent and non-franchise brokerages comes down to having the right partners and being very culture-driven. As the leader, you have to have a clear vision, verbalize what it is, and then build a plan around it. Guest Bio John is the founder/owner of Costello Real Estate and Investments. After a lively discussion of Erin’s most recent culinary catastrophes and the wild/wonderful Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee, we learn about Erin and Jakob’s new edited volume: Putting God on the Map: Theology and Conceptual Mapping (Fortress Press, 2018). The volume is an interdisciplinary work in theology and cognitive science, and our conversation covers the basics of cognitive linguistics and conceptual mapping. We also introduce the wide-ranging implications of their intersections and applications in theological discourse. Jon shares his Treasures Old & New, and then we say goodbye.
