At one point, the leading land-based salmon farmer in the world, Atlantic Sapphire, was worth $1 billion on the Oslo Stock Exchange. It's since become worth just a fraction of that, and several planned projects have dried up. Join IntraFish and land-based aquaculture expert Brian Vinci of The Freshwater Institute as we discuss the outlook for the sector. Also, a look at one of the most dangerous stretches of roads in Chile -- at least for truckers transporting farmed salmon. Tens of millions of dollars of salmon has been stolen at gunpoint in the past several years. What can be done? Correspondent John Evans reports. Alannah Vellacott is truly a creature of the Caribbean Waters, in every possible sense. She's been famously dubbed "The Real Life Little Mermaid" by many notable figures, and for good reason. Aside from freediving, scuba diving, working on several Shark Week episodes, and simply living the Island Life we all dream about… she actually works to preserve and rebuild the very world that sustains her lifestyle (and the planet, for that matter!) Land Based Coral restoration with Coral Vita is a unique process that she explains with great enthusiasm during our interview. It's a system that allows coral to grow up to 50 times faster than it would in the wild, helping revitalize dead or dying reefs. Alannah is wildly connected, seen working with the likes of André Musgrove, Cristina Zenato, Scuba Radio, and even Samuel Jackson. A flagship citizen of Grand Bahama Island, Alannah is armed with a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences, with an extensive resumé ranging from Cape Eleuthra Institute, BREEF, Perry institute for Marine Sciences, and a Scuba Instructor with over 16 years of diving. I got to hang out with Alannah at The 2023 DEMA show in New Orleans, where she not only represented Coral Vita, but put on a show with fellow Mermaids bringing an incredibly fun vibe to the festivities. There's been a significant increase in the number of sharks along the coast of NY in recent years, and there are many anglers trying their best to catch them. This episode has all the information needed to have a safe and successful shark trip. Benjamin Dyall has been shark fishing from the beaches of South Florida for decades. He calls in to discuss tactics and techniques, he shares his story of landing a ten-foot tiger shark, how he saved a little girl from being attacked by a shark and more.
MPs launch an inquiry to find out if young people are failing to get the skills needed to work in rural jobs. All week we're looking at training and education in land-based careers. Rural Skills Scotland offers apprenticeships and qualifications to help get people who are unemployed or live in towns and cities back to work. We visit a training session in Fife. Can upland farms cut their environmental impacts and still stay in business? That's what trials in the Scottish Highlands are aiming to find out. The Cairngorms National Park has backed a study to see how emissions can be cut, and biodiversity boosted, while farms still stay in the black. We visit one farm taking part in the study. Coracle fishing may be in danger of dying out, because of river pollution, according to South West Wales fishers. It's a tradition that dates back centuries, using a small, rounded, lightweight boat, but fishermen say it's at risk because of a lack of fish. Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

The SNP is meeting in Aberdeen - throughout the party conference season we've been catching up with the rural affairs spokespeople. Today we talk to the Secretary for Rural Affairs in the Scottish Government, the SNP's Mairi Gougeon. A project offering fishermen free dental checks and treatment on the harbourside has got underway in Newlyn in Cornwall. Smiles at Sea will be visiting eight fishing ports in Devon and Cornwall between now and December. The demands of being at sea means it can be hard to visit a dentist. The scheme is also helping children in coastal communities be seen by a dentist. All week we're taking a look at land-based education. A parliamentary committee launched an inquiry into it last month. The EFRA committee is looking at education from primary to universities to see how effectively its making students aware of the opportunities in agriculture and equipping them with the right skills. We speak to Landex who represents 39 colleges and universities in the sector. Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Makena and Sapha are the founders of Sacred Rebels Recovery, a project supporting individuals in recovery from addiction through land based treatment and plant medicine in Peru, in association with Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual. According to the International Journal of Indigenous Health, land-based healing is a culturally defined practice, program, or service that takes place in an urban nature-based, rural, or remote location, on a land base that has been intentionally spiritually cultivated, honored, and respected (Hanson, 2012). The land is situated as firmly relational within an Indigenous pedagogy, and is understood to be an active “partner to the person or people engaged in the healing process” (Hanson, 2012, p. 2). Steps are taken to identify how an individual or community's relationship with the land, self, and others has been disrupted and how best to help renew this relationship (Laurie, 2013). This has also been referred to as “land-based intervention” in the literature (Walsh et al., 2018). Sapha and Makena discuss the importance of being in community, how they were first exposed to permaculture, and the magical way that gardens attract community and offer a meeting place for connection to spark. We also explore some ways that permaculture can be practiced, either to reproduce colonial systems or to deconstruct them. The conversation turns to addiction, and the prejudice that people who use psychedelics can face from the recovery community. Sacred Rebels Recovery is bringing together land based healing with community, both in the jungle and virtually. Sapha and Makena share about working alongside the local community village Llanchama (sounds like yawn-chama), which neighbors Nihue Rao, about 1 hour away from Iquitos by motocar/river boat. This collaboration adds value to the recovery journey, as knowledge and healing is shared and integrated. Sapha and Makena shared with me in an email that Sacred Rebels Recovery is indigenous owned and operated, and visitors/residents have the opportunity to access psychedelic therapy and permaculture during the inpatient treatment process, which is generally not available with treatment in North America. The modalities are traditional indigenous healing practices held in a traditional container by indigenous people. Land based healing abroad adds a layer of adventure to the experience and an opportunity for the individual to be away from the city or town they used drugs in for an extended period of time. They also get the chance to experience a different culture, art, spirituality, and way of life. Their time away gives the family or closest care of the individual seeking treatment a break and ability to create healthy distance to allow space for healing on both sides. Seeking treatment internationally can also be more cost effective. Sapha and Makena's intention as stewards of the land is to develop food forests and systems that can thrive with native medicinal and edible plants, so the local community can continue to cultivate and enjoy the fruits of the land for years to come. They are also hosting ayahuasca retreats and residential programs for individuals on a path of addiction recovery. The conversation also includes a discussion of the ways that ayahuasca and other native jungle plants have supported us in our individual recovery/mental health journeys. There were various candid appearances in the background of this episode, from people splitting wood, dogs barking, planes flying overhead, birds singing, motorcars, to other jungle creatures. Today's ALF episode is great news for the tens of thousands of anglers across Australia's north who don't own a boat and would love a better land-based fishing experience. Central Queensland sponsored angler, fishing writer and YouTuber Luke Galea spends a lot of time fishing from the shore, despite having both a boat and a kayak to fish from. He finds that shore based fishing allows him to take advantage of opportunities to wet a line that he couldn't use if he was restricted to boat fishing. Knowing how and where to fish from the shore enables Luke to make a quick stop on the way home from work to chase bread and butter species like bream, whiting and flathead, or target icon fish like barra, jacks, queenfish, GTs, threadfin and more. Windows of as little as 30 minutes aren't work launching a boat for, but the results from shore casting can be very rewarding. _______________ Keen for more help with your lure fishing? Sydney Harbour has to be one of the most heavily pressured, if not THE most heavily pressured waterways in Australia. A mushrooming population, insane boating traffic and highly urbanised catchment inevitably place pressure on a fishery, yet Sydney Harbour continues to be a productive and exciting place to target some great sportfish. High on the list of desirable species for Sydneysiders is the yellowtail kingfish, and fortunately the stocks of kingfish in the harbour remain sufficient that anglers have a reasonable prospect of tangling with them. In today's episode Shroom interviews Steve "Scollopy" Collopy, a Sydney local who has been honing his land-based kingfish skills and has some impressive catches on the board. ________________________ Finding the ALF Podcast useful? Land-based salmon farming seems to be generating excitement once again among investors. The list of planned projects is long and getting seemingly longer. But it's past time to be realistic about the future of the segment, and how important it could actually be to global salmon production.
Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date on everything at the intersection of sports and the law! In this episode, Daniel Wallach (@WALLACHLEGAL) is joined by guests, John Brennan (@BergenBrennan) and Zachary Bryson (@ZacharySBryson), who together take the reins to discuss breaking issues in the world of Sports Law, and the ever changing landscape of legal sports betting. James Dolan continues to be in the news, recently catching headlines for his use of Artificial Intelligence and facial recognition software to keep specific attorneys from being able to access Madison Square Garden. (3:02) These antics are continuing to pose more issues for Dolan, with his actions ironically resulting in more lawsuits and legal issues for the Garden. Just over one year ago, the State of New York began to allow mobile sports betting in the state, and operators have been in attendance at open hearings pleading for the state to lower their 51% tax rate levied against them. (15:26). While still early in the process, there are serious questions as what the legislature will decide, and what impact it will have on New York going forward. While online sports betting becomes more successful, questions around internet gambling are also called into question. New York State has set the wheels in motion to begin searching for the operators who will be awarded the state's last 3 land-based casino licenses. (34:42) Questions around the potential locations of these coveted licenses are numerous, and developments will be eagerly anticipated. This week in the Georgia General Assembly, a bill was introduced to legalize online sports betting in the state of Georgia. (46:02) This development comes after numerous failed attempts in the past, but may represent a shift in approach for other states poised to pass sports betting legislation. The bill has many hurdles, including the potentiality of a challenge being brought under the Georgia state constitution. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Land-based salmon farming continues to sink its hook into the fish market. Mount Cook Alpine Salmon has revealed plans to launch New Zealand's first land-based salmon farm. The $16.7 million project will either be in the Mackenzie or Waitaki Districts. Chief executive, David Coles, says the consulting firm EY, which monitors the global industry, predicts land-based salmon farming could be an industry disruptor. He told Mike Hosking it's projected by 2040 more than 20 percent of global salmon production will come from this type of model. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A proposal for a land based salmon farm planned for near Twizel was unveiled yesterday, with the government committing $16.7 million to it. Mount Cook Alpine Salmon says the farm will be waste free, returning all the water used in the farm back to source in the same state it was taken. Exported salmon earns the country more than $100 million a year, but the sector faces many challenges - environmental impacts and rising sea temperatures key among them. The country's largest salmon producer, New Zealand King Salmon has had to dump fish, closes farms and let go of staff due to warmer water temperatures brought on by climate change. To discuss the land based salmon farm project Lynn speaks to Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Chief Executive David Cole and Maren Wellenreuther, a marine biologist and seafood scientist at Plant and Food Research in Nelson.

Nothing short of revolution is required to address the global ecological crisis. The technocratic solutions presented to us by various capitalist nation-states are less than sufficient in mitigating the most dire consequences of biospheric collapse and runaway climate change. In fact, more than just merely insufficient, these top-down so-called “solutions” reimpose the dominant socioeconomic and political order producing the crisis to begin with. As Gelderloos describes and points to 'The Solutions are Already Here,' numerous land-based movements around the world are rising to the occasion — actively protecting territories from extractive capitalist enterprises, reclaiming what has been taken and exploited for industry, and building resilient autonomous communities and networks, many of which that span the artificially imposed rural-urban divide. To really grasp the scale and scope of this ecological revolution from below, Gelderloos lets representatives of these movements speak for themselves, weaving them into a tapestry that enlivens a radical imagination of what a post-capitalist world may hold. In this episode a great conversation with Ross Anderson, all about the truly inspiring story of AQUNA Sustainable Murray Cod and the premium, murray cod they produce for consumers, restaurants, international markets and leading chef's like Josh Niland. It's an uplifting, can-do story about business leadership and innovation, smart, passionate people and their commitment to sustainability that all adds up to a world first, all grown in regional NSW. I've long wanted to do a 'positive' story about aquaculture, especially given the impacts of large-scale industrial Tasmanian salmon production, the story Richard Flanagan tells in Toxic - The Rotting Underbelly of the Tasmanian Salmon Industry, pub 2021. Flanagan's ‘Toxic' is a heart and environmentally wrenching story, but it isn't all bad news. In a webinar he presented about the issues, he shone light on where there's hope and great potential – to expand, sustainable land based, vertically integrated, closed loop land based aquaculture. AQUNA is an award winning, land-based, producer of murray cod - one of the most ancient, delicious and highly revered fish, once prolific in the wild, listed as nationally threatened in 2003, and so special to First People's and Murray Darling basin ecosystems. During recent fish kills, the business supplied aerators to the Menindee Lakes and have released some 23 million murray cod fingerlings back into the Murray Darling river to help restore fish stocks and ecosystem health. Love it. AQUNA is an industry leader internationally and in the local Griffith community and environment – employing people in clever jobs, growing vertically integrated, circular-resource use production. Listen in and check out their website to learn more about their commitment to sustainability and whole-of-system innovation in this space. Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod is listed as “GREEN” on the The Good Fish Guide. The Good Fish Guide, an app and website, is a sustainability initiative by the Australian Marine Conservation Society. The guide is an independent reference that helps chefs and consumers make informed decisions on the seafood they eat and serve. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food producing industries in the world – a key and growing source of protein. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, global aquaculture production rose 520% for the period 1990-2018 (FAO, 2020). Some 54% of seafood consumed worldwide is produced through aquaculture, but approximately 87% of seafood purchased in New South Wales is imported. So there are enormous domestic and export opportunities for sustainably produced, high quality fish and AQUNA are leading the way to do just that. Bravo AQUNA and thank you Ross for such a great conversation (and for what you all do)! It is with great pride that we are able to share that ARTi was among the top 60 best teams out of 1132 registered entrants into the world's largest incentive prize seeking to address climate change: This puts ARTi in the top 5.30% of contenders! The XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition sponsored by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation is a $100 million competition aimed to address humanity's greatest challenge: combating climate change and restoring the carbon cycle on Earth. ARTi entered the competition through our project called iTRApCO2. Our project offers biochar and pyrolysis as a Land-Based solution to remove Carbon. We design Pyrolysis Reactors capable of sequestering between 4 and 20 tons of CO2 per day. Our cost-effective, proven and highly scalable land-based solution of biochar and pyrolysis is a real rival for this prize and for fighting climate change. Our reactors will prove to be the most cost-effective pyrolysis systems in the world. What's even better is that when the Biochar generated is applied to soil it helps to recover soil health, fertility and structure. As biochar retains water and nutrients in its porous structure, it also promotes beneficial microorganisms. Together, this all adds up to healthier soils.
