Send us a textEpisode 135: Anton Covino, Shark Watch SA This week we are joined by Anton Covino, the man behind the Shark Watch SA pages on social media, who has been documenting shark sightings across SA for a number of years. He has  become increasingly busy in recent weeks with skyrocketing reports of sharks in shallow water and even beaching themselves, likely due to the ongoing Algal bloom and the sharks becoming unwell due to deoxygenated water. We find out how Anton started up Shark Watch SA, his theories on increasing shark sightings, how popular his recent shark posts have become and how he is minimising the risk of ‘fear mongering.'As always, we have all of the latest news in SA fishing, including:An update on the ongoing algal bloom, with more sharks and even penguins dying, the north coast of KI is getting worse and Stansbury Oyster farms closed due to possible contamination. Murray Cod released into the Valley Lake in Mount Gambier thanks to funding from RecFish SA.Council votes to allow fishing to continue in the freshwater lake at West Lakes. Our tackle item of the week is a simple, light weight net with fine mesh that we used over Easter for dabbing garfish. Another big fishing report including Port MacDonnell barrel tuna and other species in the annual Sportsfish Tournament, winter whiting are heating up, while Dizzy's Dad Davo continues to clean up the squid on the Yorke Peninsula.

Send us a textEpisode 134: Terry Magryn, Marion Bay boat ramp EngineerThis week we are joined by Terry Magryn, the main man behind Magryn Engineering who worked on the recent Marion Bay boat ramp. After some negative reports around weed building up on the ramp, it was good to chat with Terry about their role in the project. Terry was able to explain that there are a lot of competing issues with designing a new ramp, with wind, wave and weed as well as financial limits, preferences from the local council and guidelines from the South Australian Boating Facility Advisory Committee all impacting on the design. Terry gave us a much greater understanding of the challenges with this boat ramp and also touched on some of his other projects including the Whyalla Jetty. We also discussed all of the news in SA fishing:No cause was identified for fish deaths at SARDI facility last year. Commercial pipi closure linked to algal bloom.Mt Gambier's Valley Lake set for Murray Cod stocking thanks to Recfish SA funding.Another Yabby Net exchange from Recfish and Green Adelaide. Some big boat brands are sold to other companies. 2 incidents of illegal squid fishing from Wirrina. Our tackle item of the week is the recoil rod leash from Shimano and we also chat about the increase in shark sightings across the state, including some epic footage from SA Angler and Dizzy's dad spotting a Great White just after we were swimming in and out from his mooring. Plus, all of the latest fishing reports including barrels firing up in the South East of the state, winter whiting warming up, plenty of squid, an unusual whale sighting off the Kingscote Jetty and a wrap up of our own fishing over Easter targeting Crabs and Garfish.

Plenty has been said and written about fishing for Murray Cod in Lake Mulwala, but today's guest is far more qualified to dish out the advice than most. Jack Hocking was born and bred in the Mulwala area and grew up learning to fish both the lake and the Murray River downstream of the dam. These days, Jack makes a living as a professional Murray Cod guide, taking clients onto the lake to experience amazing cod fishing first-hand.  ________________ Today's ALF episode is a "PLUS" edition, meaning that Team Doc Lures members are getting a little more help from Jack than the listening public. On Episode 149 we chat to Jack Porter who is a South East Queensland resident commercial fly tyer, and published author.  Jack is tying some incredible flies and on this show, we get to the connection between his fly tying and his fly fishing. Jack has spent a lot of time honing his skills fishing for Australian freshwater natives, from Jungle Perch, to Murray Cod and plenty of Saratoga and Bass in between, this is not to say Jack hasn't spent time those fish that compete with natives such as Trout and Carp. Its fair to say that jack is a fairly well rounded fly fisherman which reflects in his fly tying. Jack is also a member of the Australian Fly tyers Co Op where you will find a selection of his flies, or you can contact him through his social media @porters_flies   Also on this show we talk about near death experiences, the re-release of Heads and Tails, Voltzy gives a recap on the BCF Topwater Film Invitational and in the outro, we really get to the bottom of why Voltzy takes photos like he does... you really don't want to miss that analysis... It could take you from zero to hero.  This episode is presented by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel, Power Pole and Beast Brushes

Last week, I had the opportunity to chat to John Everett from Fish New England. John is a very pragmatic fly tyer, who is a shining example of what translating observations made on the water to the vice looks like. Many people will already know John to be an inspiring man who is always free with advice and time, this also runs true in this interview as we talk about the trials and tribulations involved in fly design for John and how time on the water is what has shaped the flies we see today.  Many people will know John as the "Cod Fly" guy, but John is more rounded than that, and although John has spent many hours in the salt and lake Barra, he is well known for tying in his lane, a great lesson for all of us, especially those new to the sport. Having been close to the forefront of Murray Cod fly design has afforded John the ability to see both failures and successes of the successful flies we see today. Tune and listen to the stories behind some of the greatest Cod flies this country has known.  This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel and Beast Brushes

In this episode a great conversation with Ross Anderson, all about the truly inspiring story of AQUNA Sustainable Murray Cod and the premium, murray cod they produce for consumers, restaurants, international markets and leading chef's like Josh Niland. It's an uplifting, can-do story about business leadership and innovation, smart, passionate people and their commitment to sustainability that all adds up to a world first, all grown in regional NSW. I've long wanted to do a 'positive' story about aquaculture, especially given the impacts of large-scale industrial Tasmanian salmon production, the story Richard Flanagan tells in Toxic - The Rotting Underbelly of the Tasmanian Salmon Industry, pub 2021. Flanagan's ‘Toxic' is a heart and environmentally wrenching story, but it isn't all bad news. In a webinar he presented about the issues, he shone light on where there's hope and great potential  – to expand, sustainable land based, vertically integrated, closed loop land based aquaculture. AQUNA is an award winning, land-based, producer of murray cod - one of the most ancient, delicious and highly revered fish, once prolific in the wild, listed as nationally threatened in 2003, and so special to First People's and Murray Darling basin ecosystems. During recent fish kills, the business supplied aerators to the Menindee Lakes and have released some 23 million murray cod fingerlings back into the Murray Darling river to help restore fish stocks and ecosystem health. Love it.  AQUNA is an industry leader internationally and in the local Griffith community and environment  – employing people in clever jobs, growing vertically integrated, circular-resource use production. Listen in and check out their website to learn more about their commitment to sustainability and whole-of-system innovation in this space.  Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod is listed as “GREEN” on the The Good Fish Guide. The Good Fish Guide, an app and website, is a sustainability initiative by the Australian Marine Conservation Society. The guide is an independent reference that helps chefs and consumers make informed decisions on the seafood they eat and serve. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food producing industries in the world – a key and growing source of protein. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, global aquaculture production rose 520% for the period 1990-2018 (FAO, 2020). Some 54% of seafood consumed worldwide is produced through aquaculture, but approximately 87% of seafood purchased in New South Wales is imported. So there are enormous domestic and export opportunities for sustainably produced, high quality fish and AQUNA are leading the way to do just that.  Bravo AQUNA and thank you Ross for such a great conversation (and for what you all do)!
