The Calm and Cozy Podcast is full of practical advice for anyone looking for safe and natural relief from insomnia symptoms, racing thoughts, and bedtime anxiety. You will also find countless conversations about general sleep topics, self-care, and stress
We tend to think of sleep as something that happens to us, but what if we started to think of sleep as a part of us? I believe that you can prepare for a night of sleep by asking for what you need instead of closing your eyes and just hoping for the best. This episode is my short and sweet rant about a recent idea. I hope it makes sense, and I hope it helps bring you closer to seeing sleep as an ally.Claim your 30-Day Aura Guest Pass and get access to my NEW and growing library of sleep meditations and bedtime stories:https://aurahealth.io/guestpass/beth-wyatt Hosted on Acast. It's one year later, and what a year it's been! In this episode, I answer the question, "How are you, really?" I used to claim that I couldn't take short naps, that I had to sleep for at least 40 minutes to feel good, and that's no longer true. I can nap successfully for a few minutes. I can do the “power nap.” I get it now and I LOVE it. Nothing has changed in my body, I just changed my expectations. BUT I don't want to discount those who legitimately can't nap for whatever reason. This episode is for those who would like to practice the art of the power nap and are open to some fun and healthy experimentation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I thought I would do something a little different for this episode. I love telling stories and every once in a while, I'll be in the mood to tell a story in an Instagram caption. I'll post a pretty picture of a bed or a plant and then use all the space I'm allowed and hope that my followers don't get bored and stop reading before the last line. The stories are about me, and sometimes they're remotely related to sleep, but mostly they're stories I've remembered or felt compelled to share because they had an impact on me in some way. Or I just thought they were fun, and I love to connect with other people through these stories. Honestly, I always thought if I were to write a book it would be fiction, and it so happens my first book is about sleep. So, this episode is the greatest hits of the stories I've shared in my Instagram captions, and I've named each story as though they were FRIENDS episodes:THE ONE WHERE MOM DOESN'T SEE A BALD EAGLETHE ONE WHERE I FINALLY LET MY LEGS SEE THE SUNTHE ONE WHERE I HATE EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE SAYINGTHE ONE WHERE I WAS THE TIRED ONETHE ONE WHERE MICHAEL STIPE SMILED AT METHE ONE WHERE I WAS TERRIBLE AT SIMPLE MATHTHE ONE WHERE I THOUGHT I HAD NO TALENTTHE ONE WHERE I DECIDE IT'S OKAY TO BRAG ABOUT MY BOOKTHE ONE WHERE I WAS ALL WEIRD ABOUT THE TREETHE ONE WHERE I GUSH ABOUT MY MORNING WALKS Hosted on Acast. I want to take a step back from sleep topics this week and talk about what's going on in my own life. How I'm handling grief and loss, and the valuable lessons I've learned about support - more specifically, how to show support for people you care about without writing and rewriting awkward text messages or baking pies for days that won't be eaten. When you don't know what to say, or if your words will mean anything, or how you can help, know that it IS possible to offer support without having any of those answers. I swear a little. You have been warned. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I've recorded a meditation to help you fall asleep after the frustration of an unexpected wake-up. It is based on a few of the mindset concepts I covered in episode 81, Can You Manifest Better Sleep? The goal of this meditation is to help you create your own peaceful back-to-sleep practice, so I've kept it simple, but I've also made it super calm and cozy, as usual. This meditation has no intro or ads and can be played from start to finish as you relax in your bed. It starts with a 6-minute guided audio with calming piano in the background and ends with 10 minutes of just music before fading to silence. For best results, delete any downloaded or queue podcast episodes to prevent them from automatically playing after this meditation is over. If you love essential oils as much as I do, you are gonna LOVE this episode. I recently had a great conversation with Lauren Granville, an oil educator with doTERRA, and we talked about using oils to energize your mornings, ease anxiety during the day, what to diffuse in the evening before bed, and a lot more. I asked my Instagram followers to post their questions, and Lauren gave her best advice right back. First, the community is built around The Art of Falling Asleep which is our 8-week online insomnia course. A reviewer made a comment about my book (after reading an advance digital copy) that I believe was meant to be critical and a little sarcastic. I'm okay with criticism because I understand that not everyone is gonna like me. I'm also okay with sarcasm because everything I say is dripping with it. The comment made me laugh at the time, but days later, I can't let it go. The term chronotype is used to characterize your natural sleep-wake cycle and sleep patterns. It determines whether you're a night owl or an early bird or something else. Your chronotype is based on your biology and genetic makeup, and it is said that because we're born with it, it cannot be changed. I want to challenge the idea that you are stuck with the chronotype you have been born with if you feel it is no longer serving you. This episode goes deeper into what the four chronotypes are, and how I went from a functioning night owl to an early bird, and why I'm happier for it.Learn more and pre-order my new book at www.sleepcoachbeth.com Hosted on Acast. This episode is part of my sleep disorder series, and I've been looking forward to this interview for a while. I met Julie Flygare online, through our Instagram accounts and a mutual interest in sleep. Julie is the founder of Project Sleep and an advocate for people living with narcolepsy. Before meeting Julie and reading her book, I didn't know anything about narcolepsy. I thought it was what most of us think - falling asleep suddenly without any control of where you are or what you're doing. Narcolepsy is very misunderstood, and not all that rare, and that's why I wanted to have Julie tell her story. You can find Julie on Instagram as @remrunner, Project Sleep's website at: https://project-sleep.com, and the Narcolepsy Not Alone campaign at: http://www.narcolepsynotalone.com/A HUGE Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Zenbev, a natural drink mix that promotes sleep by easing anxiety and racing thoughts. This episode is kind of the third in my sleep study series. It has been said by many sleep professionals that midday naps are healthy. Most people hit a bit of a wall around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. A short nap can improve memory, focus and creativity. If you need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon, and a power nap does it for you, you are not alone. But what happens if one nap just doesn't cut it? What if you need to sleep for hours during the day to feel normal? When does napping become a problem?I tackle these questions in this episode because I'm going through the same questions myself. I'm a champion napper, but is that a good thing? Does being sleepy all day even though I sleep 7.5-8 hours every night mean something's not quite right? I'll tell you about my own experience with Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, and talk about the differences between fatigue and feeling sleepy. You can rate your own sleepiness by taking the Epworth Sleepiness Test here: http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/narcolepsy/diagnosing-narcolepsy/epworth-sleepiness-scale Hosted on Acast. Today's episode is one I've wanted to write for a while. I've been using a weighted blanket for about a year, and I love it. I've been asked several times about the benefits of weighted blankets, and there's been some interest from my followers for this episode.A weighted blanket is a natural, prescription-free source of relief for anxiety and stress of all kinds, as well as trouble falling asleep. A weighted blanket is a quilted blanket that has been filled with tiny pellets to weigh at least 10% of your total body weight. They use the science of Deep Pressure Stimulation to simulate the feeling of being hugged which eases anxiety, symptoms of ADHD and autism in children and adults.I've partnered with a company called Solace Blankets, and that's the brand I've been using nightly. This episode is about making New Year's Resolutions that make you happy or bring joy to others. Let's stop making declarations about changing our bodies or torturing ourselves at the gym. Let's start thinking about how we're showing up in the world on a daily basis and how we are loving and serving others. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I've decided to do one last breast reduction surgery-related episode because I don't want to drive you all crazy with this. A lot of people have shown an interest in my surgery, so I'm going to share my story here. As a friendly warning, this episode contains a few choice swear words, and is not appropriate for younger listeners. I also say boobs (and other versions of the word) a LOT. These are posts written for my blog, Thirty-Two-Gee, and start at least a month before my surgery. I'm going to read them the way they were written, which is in real time, is really honest, and a little awkward. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I'm still on the surgery topic this week, and in a few more days I'll be 4 weeks into my recovery from breast reduction surgery. I wanted to do an episode on recovery because not only have many of you reached out about your own reduction journey but recovering from surgery, in general, is a universal topic. I will be relating to my specific experience here, but I believe the points I cover in this episode can be applied to whatever part of your body is about to be cut open. Hosted on Acast.
