In conversation with Herbal Elder Blaine 'the Herb Man' Andrusek. In this episode we covered a wide range of topics including Lobelia, Tobacco, Overcoming addiction particulate to smoking, the circulatory system and how it works, including foods and herbs that could help. We delved into Indigenous connections, Iridology and so much more. Oh yes - we talked about Clary Sage, its properties, and the origin of the name as it relates to one of its main uses. This was chat number 21 in the Wild Wisdom & Storytelling series of interviews with Blaine Andrusek by Malcolm Saunders of Light Cellar. What would you like to hear Blaine share his perspective on? Get in touch by email, info@lightcellar.ca. Let us know what you thought of this episode, and stay tuned and subscribe to this podcast for more. About the Herb Man: Blaine Andrusek grew up in north central Saskatchewan where he spent a good deal of time in his beloved Boreal forest. By the age of 14, Blaine was regularly hunting and trapping and had a keen interest in native traditions and all that the forest had to offer. At 18, Blaine ran off with a few provisions and adequate gear to survive minus 27 and five feet of snow and ended up spending nearly four months living mostly off the land. Although he didn't understand the concept of ‘totems' at that time, Blaine had many experiences with Owl, who told him that his mission, this time, was to never stop learning and to teach. When Blaine returned to Calgary a few years later, he met Terry Willard, who had just started his practice and founded the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing. Blaine was one of the earliest graduates of the Master Herbalist program, and by the Spring of 1981 began teaching. Although mostly a hobby interest at first, ten years later, Blaine gave up other interests in favour of becoming a full-time teacher, public speaker, and practitioner. A focus on essential oils captured his interest, and Blaine was soon formulating and supplying fellow herbalists, aestheticians, and massage therapists from coast to coast, and speaking to eight to ten audiences a week. From children's summer camps to Elder Hostel, numerous massage schools, television work, and eventually keynoting national and international conferences, Blaine has had an extremely diverse and rewarding career and has been honoured as an herbal Elder. He is the creator of and namesake behind Blaine Andrusek Phytotherapeutics, a line of high-quality essential oils. As well as the author of the forthcoming autobiography: Child of the Boreal: the Story of a Young Man.

Fellowship in Essential Oils

Native to Europe, clary sage is a softer and gentler version of her well-known brother sage. She grows 1-2 metres high, with long green-purple leaves and pink, blue or white flowers. It is from these leaves and flowers that the essential oil is steam-distilled. Her old name ‘clear eye' is based on her traditional use in healing eye ailments. Clary Sage has been valued since the Middle Ages for bringing peace, inducing euphoric states and helping to keep secrets. On this episode Ariel talks about how to address anxiety with aromatherapy and Ariel's system of emotional reflexology, after last week's episode with PJ Hanks,  www.nami.org  CDC Report Shows 5% Increase in Anxiety, Depressive Disorders During COVID Pandemic | NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness ADAA, Facts About Anxiety: https://whatisanxiety.adaa.org/?gclid=CjwKCAjwy_aUBhACEiwA2IHHQNrlcXhS4lO5BvYETV3swWBydM0bMbEKTMcWfkZ4CyIt75gi1lvMShoCDCYQAvD_BwE  Emotional Reflexology was created by Ariel F. Hubbard and Lynn Nelson in 2004. Dr. Carolyn Mein's book is Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils.  An excellent book on clearing negative emotions.   Disclaimer: There are no claims made here that these tools cure anxiety, nor that they are a replacement for medical treatment!  If you are concerned you have anxiety, make an appointment for a qualified medical professional to receive treatment. To receive Emotional Reflexology treatments, contact Ariel to book an appointment. Some essential oils that may be helpful to address some aspects of anxiety: Anxiety - Joy (to elevate mood) Sedative oils: Lavender, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang Panic – Lavender (calming), Clary Sage (helps you let go of racing thoughts, Roman Chamomile (instils a feeling of well-being), Sweet Marjoram (to slow a racing heart and enhance bronchodilation) Social Phobia – Neroli (to let go of the past) Ariel's Emotional Reflexology Session for yourself:   Step 1: Ground and Center yourself. Step 2: Rub your hands together to generate Chi and imagine you are also creating a Violet Flame between your hands.  The Violet Flame will help you transmute any negative energy released into positive energy. Visualise using your hands to pass the Violet Flame from your head to your toes, imagining that it transmutes negative energy and clears you. Step 3: Pass Rainbow Sparkly Light with your hands, moving from your head to your toes. This positive energy charges you with all needed colour frequencies. Colour therapy is a real modality--it has been used for hundreds of years to treat various health issues in hospitals and other environments. When you visualise colour charging your body and energy system, it helps counteract the effects of having anxiety, which can be incredibly draining. Step 4: Take a spritzer bottle with 10 drops of myrrh oil (if you have it), and spray the middle of your hands. Massage this area, and say, "I am safe, I am safe, I am safe." Then massage and say, "Safe I am, safe I am, safe I am."  This addresses adrenal stress. Step 5: Massage the midpoint of the forehead right at the hairline (about 2 inches above the Third Eye Chakra). This acupoint addresses acute anxiety. Step 6: Spray with White Angelica spritz and massage the Hundred Meeting Point (massage the location of the Crown Chakra) and say, "I am connected, I am connected, I am connected. Then say, "Connected I am, connected I am, connected I am." People with anxiety often close off their Crown and Upper Chakras and feel disconnected from Source.  This Chakra also feeds energy to all other chakras in the body. This acupoint, the Hundred Meeting Point, is part of the Governing Vessel extraordinary meridian, which feeds energy to all of the other meridians in the body.  The goal here is to become balanced! Step 7: Massage the thumbs and fingers with Peace and Calming essential oil blend. while saying or thinking the affirmation, “I am real.”This is to release victim consciousness and be self-responsible and empowered to make choices, which can be needed for people feeling trapped, unsafe or anxious. Step 8: Massage the middle of the palms again,  while spraying a spritzer of Lavender essential oil, and say, “I learn from all of life's experiences, I learn from all of life's experiences, I learn from all of life's experiences,"  and then, "From all of life's experiences I learn, from all of life's experiences I learn, from all of life's experiences I learn."  This addresses stress, cramping, and tension in the abdominal region, which often manifests when people have anxiety. Step 9: Go to the K27 points in the upper chest, just at the indentation lateral to where the clavicle and the sternum meet. Tap or make finger circles at the Elegant Mansion or K27 points. Working this area balances the overall energy in the body. These points strengthen immune function and relieve breathing difficulties, chest congestion, asthma, coughing, anxiety and depression. Step 10: Walk in place for about 30 seconds, visualising the relaxation and shifts in how you are feeling integrating into your energy anatomy system and physical body.  Take time to notice how much better you feel!   KEY TAKEAWAYS People are constantly dealing with and addressing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Most of us have to deal with it on a daily basis or at least occasionally. Anxiety symptoms often occur with depressive disorders – where people feel anxiety and depression at or around the same time – and they also often use substances to try to combat anxiety and depression. Most people often have more than one anxiety disorder simultaneously. Usually, if people have anxiety, it'll show up before the age of 21 and about 8% of teenagers have anxiety disorders, though it may be higher than that, so keep an eye on your kids as well as yourselves. Some of the signs of anxiety: Extreme muscle tension, panic attacks, tremors or difficulty speaking, social phobias, hyper-sensitivity – seeing threats in everyday life, self-medicating with alcohol, sedatives or drugs, difficulty determining between real or imagined danger. Essential oils change the chemical levels in the limbic system – areas of the brain that stimulate emotional reactions to events. When you smell essential oils some of the molecules go up through your nose and are translated as signals that go up into your brain that affect how the brain responds to different events.    BEST MOMENTS “During the Covid pandemic alone, anxiety and depression grew from 36.4% to 41.5%.” “Anxiety can come from genetic factors, it can come from brain chemistry issues and it can also be caused by life events. Only about a third of the 40 million people in the US who have anxiety are actually receiving treatment.” “There's a difference between having anxiety and having an anxiety disorder. An anxiety disorder is a more chronic, serious state, and having anxiety is normal. Anxiety disorders are more serious and definitely need to be treated.” “Reflexology is not a replacement for medical treatment but some of it will address the symptoms, feelings or energetic imbalances that we have when we're experiencing anxiety.”   ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. “Sexual energy shows up when we are actively participating in our lives, not simply letting life happen to us. Simple things like communicating how we feel, exercising in a way that makes us feel connected and healthy in our bodies, and speaking up for ourselves can be fantastic ways of clearing the blockages to this energy and letting it begin to flow again.” ~ Julie Peters Guest Introduction:  Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. My name is Cindy MacMillan. Do you ever feel like you are waiting on a permission slip to live the life you want? If you answered yes, then you are in the right spot. Each week I interview coaches and spiritual explorers, from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between. Self-love well-being and mindset are at the heart of our conversations. Because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. In this episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, we are chatting about things we do without realizing it that block our sexual energy.  And my guest is Deanne Rose. Deanne is a pleasure coach and ecstatic birth doula. She believes in a world where women are connected to their natural rhythms and cycles. She guides women in remembering who they are, reclaiming their power and rising into the best version of themselves.   You're going to love this episode, and I personally can't wait to talk to Deanne, so let's get to it.  Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Welcome to the show, Deanne. Thank you for being here.   1:44 I believe our sexual energy is our life force energy, our creative energy. You can use it for sexual pleasure. But you also could use it in your tangible day to day, life, and work. So, I believe that when we can get in tune with this creative sexual energy, that we really, truly find our voice.   4:08 About seven years ago, I went through a divorce. And so, I was given the spaciousness, this time to look at myself, and to see where I had lost myself; you know, as a mother, as a wife, and as a woman. The first thing I did, I remember, was I went to Victoria's Secrets and got all new underwear.  7:44 I don't think we're living, we're just surviving, you know, we're truly not living life, because life is pleasure.  12:43 I love to dance, and I remember years ago thinking, oh, you know what, when I come back in another life, I want to be a dancer. And there was like a little voice inside of my head said we'll just start dancing now. And I'm like, okay, I will and it's just so free. That's what I do every morning.  15:45 Sometimes it's just coconut oil. If I have time, I'll add some essential oils, some essential oils that are good for, for women. Geranium, Clary Sage, I like Douglas fir, because that's a very grounding oil, but those other two I mentioned are good for hormone balancing.  18:36 I think it's very few people who actually had a very healthy sex education, when they were growing up.  21:01 What has helped me, is I use what is called a jade egg, it's like a gem for my vagina.  29:17 And like you said, it doesn't have to end in divorce. Sometimes it does if you're just not compatible anymore, but I think most of the time when there's communication, because if you're feeling this way, your partner's probably also feeling this way. So, who's going to have enough courage to bring this up? And, and you know, how can we address this?  32:12 I just want to remind, especially women, that pleasure is our birthright, that we are here to live in the full expression of ourselves. In all the beauty that there is because we're each are individually beautiful beings here for a purpose and when we can express ourselves fully. That's how we make a giant positive impact in the world. This is the audio of my Third Eye Chakra Healing Meditation from my online course "Ignite Your Wild." This course was designed for women, but is not exclusive and meant to be open and healing for everyone.Link to the CourseTHIRD EYE CHAKRA | AJNAI SEELocation: Brow / Center of your foreheadColor: Indigo or WhiteElement: All of the elements in their pure form; light. Purpose: Intuition, inner perception, clarity of thought, and spiritual guidance. When your third eye is in balance: You are able to step beyond the perceptions of the mind and into a realm of knowledge and wisdom that allows you to see and understand a deeper meaning for situations and experiences in life. When the Ajna is open, you both see and understand. Remembering your dreams is a sign that your third eye is flourishing, as well as a heightened sense of "knowing" and seeing energy or auras. When your third eye is out of balance: We confuse information with knowledge and often exhibit arrogance and follow self-limiting thoughts and behaviors. We forget to trust our intuition, which in turn, further depletes the power of the Ajna. When the third eye is out of balance you may experience nightmares, feelings of brain fog, and inability to make strong decisions.Crystals for your third eye: Amethyst, Diamond, Lepidolite, Blue TopazAromatherapy/Essential Oils to strengthen your third eye: Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Neroli, PeppermintRituals and Practices to help open your third eye:If you experience headaches or eye strain (often causes by too much screen time) go outdoors and focus peacefully on nature. The color green is healing for the third eye, so surrounding yourself in trees and focusing on their brilliance will help settle this chakra.Touch the location between your brows of your third eye, close your eyes, and visualize white light beaming into this area. Repeat these mantras: "I am open and guided by my intuition", "My intuition has clarity, wisdom, and divine guidance", "I seek to always learn and grow from my life experiences", and "I trust and follow my intuition".https://www.myrituelle.comInstagramSupport the showSupport the show

In our time together we explore the Flow State and how it impacts our experience of the world. I share some of my favourite Oils for taking us into a Flow state, from the realm of Science and Energetics, with a spotlight on Cypress Essential Oils. Traditional Chinese Saying: “If there is free flow, there is no pain. If there is pain, there is no free flow.” Show Notes: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi A Hungarian psychologist considered the Father of flow. Steven Kotler A high performance specialist and researcher of the Flow State Study #1 Clary Sage & Oxytocin : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5721455/ Study #2 Clary Sage & Serotonin Uptake https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24802524/ Seth Godin : “A flow state is priceless. It happens when we lose ourselves in the work, simply connecting with the task, without commentary or doubt. When we're in flow, time slows down, satisfaction rises and we feel fully engaged. An easy way to end a flow state is to see how well you're doing. Are you ahead of the other runners? Are you progressing according to the milestones? Do you have more social metrics now? The irony, of course, is that the best way to make progress is to find flow. But if you're using progress as a yardstick, it won't last long.” If you don't yet have a dōTERRA Account and wish to have your own excellent Essential Oils please message me here amelia@ameliayoga.co.uk for more information or visit my website here https://www.ameliaadrian.com/ You can also find me on Instagram as @thearomayogini

Our body is always giving us signals, like the warning lights of the dash on a car.  Our spirit holds our original blueprint of health and harmony. But the flow of the communication from the spirit gets blocked when thoughts and emotions aren't expressed and handled appropriately. Where are the signals? What are the red flags? How do we know we're off course or out of alignment? This episode gives the basic breakdown of the third eye center and its association with perception, intuition, imagination, wisdom, the ability to think and make decisions. This ability to see EVERYTHING clearly shifts our perspective, so we can see our own blind spots and understand ourselves in the context of the world around us. But in order to gain God's perspective… or a kingdom/big picture perspective, we first have to see ourselves clearly! Some oils that help to stimulate the pineal gland in this center are...Clary Sage- emotional stability and clarityHawaiian Sandalwood- feel grounded but connected to higher perspectiveJasmine- stimulates sensesBlack Spruce- grounding for better connectionVetiver- a great one for when you're wound really tight with anxious thoughts or to use before bedtime if you struggle with waking up throughout the night. You can apply any of these oils right to that third eye area between the brow, but make sure to dilute because that is sensitive skin. You can also target this center via reflexology by applying to the bottom of the big toe.Pineal Gland 5mL roller- 3 black spruce, 3 clary sage, 2 sandalwood, 2 drops jasmineRoll on third eye.Free Guides-valpetty.comrootedinlove.co

One of the main questions I've been getting lately is, “how did you discover your gifts?” I hear a lot of people saying they feel like they're blocked off from their abilities even if they trust that they're there. I can honestly relate; this used to be me.  The process of discovering my healing abilities was (and still is) at times super uncomfortable. I had (and still have) to move through a lot of energy around doubt, uncertainty and invalidation. Sometimes this road just looks different than we thought it would--and that is OK. It is actually normal for us to have gifts. When they begin to express sometimes it can be so subtle that we won't even recognize it. In the next episode of the Psychic Herbalism Podcast I talk about different types of energy that can affect us as we open to our gifts (I share my personal funny/uncomfortable story as well). And, one of the blossoms was, appropriately, given to Queen Victoria (Santa Cruz Water Lily). The Victoria cruziana is an exotic plant. It is named in honor of two people: Queen Victoria & Andres de Santa Cruz, President of Peru & Bolivia, who sponsored the expedition where the plants were first collected. In the wild, Victoria cruziana is native to open waters in northern Argentina and Paraguay. Sadly, the Victoria cruziana is endangered due to deforestation. Although in recent years, the Santa Cruz Water Lily has been returning by the hundreds in the Salado River in Paraguay. Locals take tourists out to see them in little canoes. Victoria cruziana produces enormous lily pads that can grow up to 2 meters or almost 7 feet wide. Today, greenhouses grow the Santa Cruz Water Lily from seed. In cultivation, pollination takes place by hand in the evenings when the plant is flowering. But in its native habitat, the pollination process of the Santa Cruz Water Lily is a fantastic spectacle: When the big flower bud  initially opens - it is pure white and it emits a pineapple aroma. Then, as night falls, the flower goes through a chemical change that causes it to heat up.The pineapple scent and the warmth draw flying scarab beetles who venture far into the depths of the flower to find feast of starch. It's likeThanksgiving in there. While they are feasting through the night, the morning sunlight causes the flower to close up, and the feasting scarab beetles are trapped inside. During the day, the flower goes through a tremendous transformation. The pineapple scent goes away, and the flower turns from pure white to pink - all in the course of a single day. What's more, the sex of the flower changes from female to male.  When the Santa Cruz Water Lily flower opens again on the second night, the scarab beetles are ready to go, and they fly off, covered in pollen to find the next freshly opened pineapple scented female flowers. Isn't that incredible? Now the underside of the giant Amazonian water lily, Victoria cruziana, is quite something to see. It consists of this intricate vaulted rib structure, which is perfectly designed by Mother Nature. The air pockets give it the buoyancy and allow it to handle the load of the enormous lily pad. Those ribs are what allows the lily pad to float. This pattern so inspired Joseph Paxton that he incorporated it into his design for Crystal Palace in 1851. And, to illustrate the strength of the lily pads, there's a famous old photo from the 1800s that shows five children sitting on top of individual lily pads - one of them looks to be about three years old, and she's sitting on a rocking chair that was put on top of  the Lily pad, and they are all just calming staring into the Camera. It's quite the image. There is one more surprise for people who get the chance to really study the giant water lily. Everything except the smooth top surface of the lily is ferociously spiny to protect it from being eaten by nibblers under the water.    Back in July, I shared a video in the Facebook Group for the Show from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh which showed their Senior Horticulturist, Pat Clifford, teaching an intern, how to remove older Giant Water Lily pads so the pond doesn't get overcrowded. Using a pitchfork, Pat carefully folded the giant lily pad first in half, then quarters, and then once more. Then he stabbed the large folded pad with the pitchfork, hoists it in the air to let the water drain out, and then flops this huge beast of a pad down on the edge of the pond. Then, the camera zooms in to reveal the incredibly savage thorns that grow on the underside of the lily pad and all down the stem of the plant. For folks who watch that video, It is a shock to see how vicious the thorns are - rivaling any rose.       #OTD   Today is the birthday of American botanist, horticulturist, and landscape architect Kate Sessions, who was born on this day in 1857. As a young woman, Kate had traveled to San Diego to teach, but she ended up following her passion and bought a local nursery in 1885. Before long, Kate owned a flower shop as well. And, she didn't leave her teaching roots behind. Kate is remembered for going from grammar school to grammar school, teaching thousands of young children basic horticulture and botany. In 1892, she managed to convince the City of San Diego to lease her 30 acres of land to use for growing in Balboa Park so that she could grow plants for her nursery. The arrangement required Session to plant 100 trees in balboa park every single year in addition to another 300 trees around the city of San Diego.  Over a dozen years, Kate planted close to 5,000 trees, forever changing the vista of San Diego. The Antonicelli family, who later bought Kate's nursery, said that Kate was tough and plants were her whole life.  "When she would go out on a landscape job, rather than put a stake in the ground, she had these high boots on, and she'd kick heel marks in the ground, and that's where she would tell the guys to plant the trees." Thanks to her nursery and connections, Session planted hundreds of cypress, pine, oak, pepper trees, and eucalyptus. And although she never married or had any children, it was thanks to her dedication to the trees of San Diego that Sessions became known as The Mother of Balboa Park. But there is one tree that Sessions will forever be associated with, and that is the jacaranda, which is a signature plant of the city of San Diego. Sessions imported the jacaranda, and she propagated and popularized it - it which wasn't difficult given its beautiful purple bloom. In September of 1939, Kate broke her hip after falling in her garden. The following march, newspapers reported she had died quietly in her sleep, "At the close of Easter Sunday, when the broad lawns, the groves, the canyons, and the flower beds were aglow with a beauty that has become her monument."   #OTD  On this day in 1941, Hitler gave a speech where he said that "Leningrad must die of starvation.” The following year, that's nearly what happened as hundreds of thousands starved to death in the streets of Leningrad. People were so desperate, that some people attempted to eat sawdust.  As the Nazis arrived in St Petersburg, the dedicated scientists at the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry locked themselves inside the seed vault to protect the world's seed collection, which was housed in bins that went from the floor to the ceiling in 16 rooms. The workers came up with a strategy where no one was allowed to be alone with the seed. They were always paired up, and they guarded the collection in shifts. The siege lasted for 900 days, and one by one, the people in the vault started dying of starvation.  In January 1942, Alexander Stchukin, a peanut specialist, died at his desk. And, ironically, as he was guarding rice, the Botanist Dmitri Ivanov also died of starvation. When the siege ended in the Spring of 1944, nine scientists had starved to death while defending the world's seeds.       #OTD On this day in 1974, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington dedicated the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve.   The 10-acre preserve is in the middle of the campus and is home to a marvelous example of unique native plants like the Venus flytrap, sundew, and white and yellow jasmine.   An article reporting on the preserve said,   "In this hurly-burly rush-around world of ours, there are still those who care about the natural beauty of the area and about preserving it for future generations."             #OTD On the same day in 1974, London's famous flower, fruit, and vegetable market moved from Covent Garden to Battersea.   In 1661, King Charles II established Covent Market under a charter. After an incredible transformation from a 9-acre pasture in the heart of London, the streets and alleys of Covent Garden served as a market for Londoners for 305 years. Back in 1974, 270 dealers were buying and selling 4,000 tons of produce every day, as well as flowers and plants worth $28.8 million.   One newspaper reported that when a trader was asked if he would miss the location of the old market, he replied,   "We deal in fruit and vegetables, not sentiment."   Covent Gardens was the spot where Professor Henry Higgins met a flower seller named Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady."   And, in Dicken's story, "The Old Curiosity Shop," a stranger went to the Covent Market, "at sunrise, in spring or summer when the fragrance of sweet flowers is in the air, overpowering even the unwholesome streams of last night's debauchery and driving the dusky thrush, whose cage has hung outside a garret window all night long, half-mad with joy." Unearthed Words "My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree Toward heaven still, And there's a barrel that I didn't fill Beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn't pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple-picking now. Essence of winter sleep is on the night, The scent of apples: I am drowsing off." - Robert Frost, After Apple Picking     Today's book recommendation: How to Know the Ferns by Frances Theodora Parsons Parsons was an American naturalist and author, remembered most for her book on American wildflowers. But her book, How to Know the Ferns, is also a favorite and it's a personal favorite of mine. One of the reasons I'm a huge Parsons fan is because of her incredible life story. After her first husband and baby died, Parsons finally broke her grief when her friend Marion Satterlee managed to get her to take nature walks, which rekindled her love for wildflowers. In 1893, Fanny published her famous book, How to Know the Wildflowers.   It sold out in five days and was a favorite of Theodore Roosevelt and Rudyard Kipling. Three years later, in 1896, Fanny married a childhood friend, a professor, politician, and diplomat, James Russell Parsons. The following year, Fanny gave birth to their son. Parsons was not well off, so Fanny wrote today's book, "How to Know the Ferns" in an effort to financially help her family.    In the first page of the book, Parsons shares this beautiful quote about ferns by Henry David Thoreau:   “If it were required to know the position of the fruit dots or the character of the indusium, nothing could be easier than to ascertain it; but if it is required that you be affected by ferns, that they amount to anything, signify anything to you, that they be another sacred scripture and revelation to you, helping to redeem your life, this end is not so easily accomplished.”   A year after Ferns, Fanny gave birth to their only daughter, Dorothea, who tragically died at two and a half years old five days before Thanksgiving in 1902. Three years later, Fanny's husband, James,  was killed when his carriage collided with a  trolley car.     A widow for the second time, Fanny published this poem in Scribner’s Magazine in 1911: When Laughter is Sadder than Tears.   The marshes stretch to the dunes and the dunes sweep down to the sea, And the sea is wooing the meadow which waits with an open door; Then a melody sweet to the hearer floats up from the murmuring lea Till the sea slips seaward again and the land is athirst as before. And athirst is the heart whose worship is not the worship of yore, Whose visions no magic can conjure, whose plenty is suddenly dearth; And parched as the desert the soul whose tears no grief can restore, Whose laughter is sadder than tears and whose grief is as barren as mirth.   The days are alive with music, the nights their pleasures decree; The vision the morning fulfills is the dream that the evening wore, And life is as sweet to the living as the flower is sweet to the bee, As the breath of the woods is sweet to the mariner far from shore. But singing and sweetness and laughter must vanish forevermore, As the petals fall from the flower, as the waters recede from the firth, When hopes no longer spring upward as larks in the morning soar, Then laughter is sadder than tears and grief is as barren as mirth.   Friend, if shaken and shattered the shrine in the heart that is fain to adore, Then forsake the false gods that have held you and lay your pale lips to the Earth, That in her great arms she may take you and croon you her melodies o'er, When laughter is sadder than tears and grief is as barren as mirth.       Today's Garden Chore Enjoy a portable and dazzling spot for your houseplants by repurposing a bar cart.  Bar carts are super trendy once again, and they offer gardeners a stylish space for displaying houseplants. If you get a cart with glass shelves, light can filter through to plants on the bottom shelf as well. Or, you can use the bottom shelf to store extra soil, horticultural charcoal, pots, and other gear. I've had tremendous luck sourcing bar carts on Facebook Marketplace. I recently put a gold cart in my botanical Library. It's a mid-sized oval cart, and it holds about a dozen small houseplants for me - from Swedish Ivy to a variety ferns. I have to say, my little glass misting bottle looks extra elegant on the bar cart. And remember, if you happen to find a metallic cart - whether it's gold or silver - those are all considered neutrals in interior design. And, don't forget, that you can repurpose ice buckets - whether they are crystal or have a beautifully textured exterior - you can use them as cache pots for your plants. Along with the bar cart, they add a touch of sparkle and glimmer during the holidays.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart On this day in 1969, the Johnson City Press, out of Johnson City Tennessee reported on a new batch of postage stamps out of New Zealand that commemorated the bi-centenary of Captain Cook's first voyage to New Zealand: The 4c stamp featured a side portrait of Captain Cook with the planet Venus crossing the sun - together with an old navigational instrument, the octant. The 6c stamp featured the naturalist Sir Joseph Banks with an outline of the 'Endeavour.' The 18c stamp showed Dr. Solander. He was the botanist aboard the 'Endeavour,' together with a native plant bearing his name and known locally as the Matata. The 28c stamp displayed a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Captain Cook's 1769 chart of New Zealand.     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

She's helped me heal in so many ways, and given me subtle guidance in turning the attention inward once again. During today's episode we had a deep discussion regarding our thoughts on self mothering, on love and on the importance of being present. Zivar is devoted to healing our collective and personal wounds through community, the Divine Feminine, creativity and embodiment practices. She is currently working on a film, writing a book on Kabbalah and the moon, and lectures often on the art of visual storytelling. She also works with select clients in photography, branding, visual storytelling, and content creation. As humans we have the ability to regulate our physiology through moving, breathing and touching. By creating a safe environment for ourselves and others we are able to heal. It's time to reparent, to mother the self and be the one you always needed. Let's heal together. ZIVAR'S FAVORITES Ritual, before bed or as you wake: Lay on your back with soles of feet on ground and knees up. Pour oil on your abdomen, into your belly button. I use Castor Oil with a bit of Clary Sage, you can use whatever feels most nurturing to you. Place one hand or both hands on gut. Begin to massage the oil into your abdomen in a counter-clockwise motion. One hand following the other. Be slow about it, deliberate and loving. Begin to say to yourself outloud -- I realse the need to ___ (control, be distracted, fear, hide), I release the need to ____ (another thing), etc. Allow yourself to release whatever big or seemingly small things have been disrupting the flow your gut, your intuitive knowing. Do this for a few minutes and then rest one hand on your gut, another on your heart. Breathe in and out three times, reminding your soul that your body is a safe and beautiful place to rest. Ritual especially helpful in moments of constipation (both emotional and physical). Non-Negotiable Self-Care: Sex with my husband. I always feel so good, embodied and deeply seen through this act. I also find it incredibly healing, to feel so safe and experience pleasure in my body, as a survivor of sexual trauma. It helps that I am married to a Scorpio ;) You may find Zivar by visiting zivaramrami.com or @altarofstories for latest images & reflection. Just how good are herbs for supporting hormonal health? Find out as I highlight the top 10 herbs that I’m using in my practice that have given some really wonderful results! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode49. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The celery juice craze The top 10 herbs for hormonal health Key Takeaways: The Top 10 Herbs for Hormonal Health Black Cohosh It’s great for hormonal regulation and also for treating rheumatic pain. It’s wonderful for women’s reproductive health and has been used to treat almost every condition related to the menstrual cycle. Studies have shown that it’s really effective in supporting and reducing hot flashes and mood swings that are often associated with menopause. It’s been shown to improve ovulation and fertility in women who are specifically taking Clomid. It’s also very inflammatory and can help reduce muscle pain by lowering hormonal levels.     Chaste Tree   Also known as Chaste Berry or Vitex, it’s considered one of the best herbs for regulating hormones and is used a lot with infertility and PMS. It works best when a specific hormone called prolactin is high. As is typically the case with most herbs, you have to stay on it for quite long-term, at least a good three to four months, before you can see any difference. Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. It works directly with your pituitary gland to help regulate estrogen and progesterone production.     Garlic   It’s wonderful for treating high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It has a ton of antibacterial properties. Studies have shown that it effectively treats both bacterial vaginosis and vaginal yeast infections caused by candida.     Ginger   It’s great for colds and cases of flu, indigestion, menstrual cramps, and even arthritis. It has a lot of anti-inflammatory properties. It’s not going to specifically treat hormonal imbalances, but if you have menstrual cramps, or if you have nausea, specifically from pregnancy, ginger is a wonderful natural alternative. If you’ve gone through chemotherapy or are going through chemotherapy and you have a lot of nausea, ginger will be great for that. It’s also great for reducing pain that’s associated with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.     Lavender   It’s great for anxiety and depression, and for calming the body. It can be great for headaches as well and can really help to promote restful sleep. Research has shown that lavender is effective at reducing generalized anxiety and depression both when used as aromatherapy and when taken internally.     Turmeric   Curcumin is the main active plant chemical that’s found in turmeric, and it can treat numerous illnesses, diseases, and symptoms. It’s very anti-inflammatory, which is wonderful for treating arthritis, endometriosis, or any type of chronic pain, and great for ulcerative colitis. It’s also really potent in antioxidants.     Yarrow   It is wonderful for excess bleeding of any kind, as well as fibroids and endometriosis. It’s great for ensuring a healthy flow of flood.     Ashwagandha   It’s used in many adrenal complexes because it can help to reduce cortisol levels and help regulate your endocrine system. It can also help increase your libido. It supports thyroid health by helping in the conversion of T4 to T3.     Rehmannia   It’s great for treating disorders that are related to the kidneys and to the adrenal glands. It’s known as a longevity herb. It’s a cooling herb that has the ability to balance what Chinese medicine calls yin in the body.     Clary Sage   It helps to regulate estrogen levels and reduce mood fluctuations   Action Steps: Understand how these herbs can really be beneficial to your health. But don’t spend your money where you don’t need to. Check if you already have these herbs at home, in your fridge or on your kitchen counter.   Samantha said: “Sometimes if there is something that’s too good to be true, well, it probably is. And especially in the health and wellness industry, there is not just one thing that’s going to be the healer for you… It is a combination of things, and we really can’t forget the foundational things.” “It’s so unfortunate so many women are going on the pill because they’re using the pill to treat their menstrual pain or irregularity, and it’s not doing that. Essential Oils to Enhance Fertility, Pregnancy, and Birth with Shauna Wetenkamp

Shauna Wetenkamp joins the show to share her immense knowledge on essential oils and examples of ways she has used them in ways many people may not have thought possible. She talks about her own personal journey in using them to help heal after a severe accident, how essential oils can enhance our life and our fertility, the ways the “nose knows” when it comes to sniffing out great quality oils, which oils are great for specific emotions, and how to choose them intuitively.   To share your own fertility story, please email me at hillary@ladypotions.com. I look forward to connecting with you, as you are what this podcast is all about.   Takeaways: [6:43] A very severe accident that Shauna endured, led her to appreciate the gift of being able to learn firsthand the healing properties of essential oils both physically and emotionally. [9:39] A different oil can be applied for both almost every emotional and physical pain. [12:38] When it comes to essential oils and medicine perfumes, a little goes a long way. The quality also matters, along with making sure it’s the appropriate oil and any emotions that need to be addressed along with the oil usage. [16:22] Shauna loves to partner with doTerra because of their dedication to community, high quality, and purity, and work to uplift countries with indigenous peoples. [19:42] For pain, a few that Shauna recommends are: Clary Sage (great for cramps), Frankincense, Lemongrass, Pink Pepper, Thyme, and Marjoram. [28:12] Essential oils are a great tool for working with your mind and body as you observe emotions that are coming up, and that may have been stuck or pushed down for years. [29:37] Shauna did her own physical therapy, and was completely committed to the only option of healing and regaining her health. [33:16] Marjoram and Cedarwood are the oils of community, and the ability to allow true connection with others and to notice the good things present in your life. [37:22] Geranium (love and trust) and Ylang Ylang (inner child) are great in a bath with Epsom salts to soak away the anger and sadness. [40:23] Most often the oils we tend to stay away from and resist the most are the ones we could benefit from. Shauna advises bringing it in slowly and working in the emotion that it addresses. [49:37] Shauna loves to put Sandalwood on her third eye for extra help in her intuition, and Rose to connect more with divine love. For fear, Bergamot is about loving yourself and having the courage to put ourselves first. Ginger, Lavender (clear communication), and Cypress (motion and flow) are also used to summon courage and help alleviate the physical symptoms of fear and anxiety. [58:29] Journaling is a great way to record where you are at and put out emotions that are stuck.   References: Fertile Minds on LibSyn Fertile Minds on iTunes @ladypotions4u Botanical Medicine for Women’s Health, by Aviva Romm Encyclopedia of Essential Oils, by Julia Lawless Essential Oils for Pregnancy, Birth & Babies, by Stephanie Fritz Emotions and Essential Oils, by Enlighten Ep 47: “Bach Flower Remedies for Emotions that Come Along with Fertility Challenges” Shauna On Instagram Shauna Wetenkamp Facebook   Continue Your Journey: Link to sign up for free 29-day meditation challenge @ladypotions4u on Twitter @ladypotions4u on Instagram My Website: Ladypotions.com Special Thanks to Christopher Lloyd Clarke for music   Disclaimer *  You must not rely on the information in this podcast as an alternative to medical advice from your doctor or another professional healthcare provider. #2 I recently participated in an incredible online education series called the Essential Oils Hormone Summit. I learned so many wonderful things and I wanted to share my biggest takeaways with you! The Essential Oil Hormone Summit was lead by the talented and beautiful Dr. Mariza Snyder. She brought in some of the top wellness experts and interviewed them on how to create hormone balance with essential oil rituals, recipes, and powerful lifestyle recommendations. Here's more info about Dr. Mariza and where you can find her! Functional Practitioner and author of six books Newest book: The Essential Oils Hormones Solution which will be available in early 2019 Visit her website here Check out her podcast Essentially You Over 25 of dōTERRA's leaders and wellness experts were interviewed and I wish I could share ALL my notes with you, but instead I will share some of the golden nuggets from this summit and the simple actions you can take TODAY to create more balance in your hormones. #1 The Foundation of Health is Nutrition Food is information for your body, and you want to be sending your body the right information Supplementing your nutrition is important in making sure you're getting everything you need each day The Lifelong Vitality Pack (LLV) was mentioned numerous times. This is one of dōTERRA's most ordered product and I take these supplements daily. You can order them here. Drinking lots of water is also important. Most people are chronically dehydrated which can lead to feeling stiff or achy in the joints. You might also have a mental fog, constipation, chapped lips, dry skin, and more when you're not drinking enough water. TIP: Fill your glass bottle or jar with high quality water and add a drop of Tangerine essential oil, Lemon essential oil, or Grapefruit essential oil for extra limonene to help clear out your system. Buy your high limonene oils here. #2 Self Care is Necessary Self care doesn't mean taking weekly bubble baths (although I aim to soak in the tub 2x/week!), or getting a massage, or doing some retail therapy. Self care means creating AND living your dream life every day. It means creating a life you don't need a vacation or escape from. Self care means putting yourself first. You cannot serve others when your cup is empty. Self care means saying “no” so you can make room for “YES!” Self care means feeling good – all the time TAKE ACTION: Spend a couple minutes in quiet mediation thinking about what you would like your dream life, or day to look like. Then, write out your “perfect” or “dream day.” How does it start and end? Go into detail throughout the day. Once you're done, look back at your “prefect day” and choose one thing you can start implementing in your daily life. Even if it is something similar to what you put on your paper. Display this somewhere where you will see it every day! #3 Reduce Your Toxic Load A lot of household products and skincare or makeup products have loads of toxins, chemicals, and other harmful components that are affecting our health and hormones. Consider switching out these products. I always recommend that once you've finished a product to find a new, cleaner alternative. And quite honestly, I've been making a lot of my own cleaning products since learning more about essential oils. dōterra.com has an excellent DIY section. dōTERRA also has an On Guard cleaning line which is super simple and wonderful for switching over laundry detergent, stain remover, and hand soap in your home. My favourite is the On Guard mistand I carry this with me everywhere and I especially love it after the gym or the gas station when I know I've touched things that many other people have touched. 6 Simple Daily Detox Habits Drink lots of water Dry brush before showering Sweat! (sauna, workouts, etc.) Drink a Green Juice! Try celery juice to reduce inflammation Spend time in nature (detox from “noise” and technology) Use your essential oils #4 Energetic & Emotional Alignments Liver-Hormone Connection Anger is the emotion associated with the liver and the gallbladder. Love your liver! It's helping to detox everything that is going into or on your body, it has a big job and it needs your help sometimes Pay attention to certain behavioural and emotional signs that your liver needs you: headaches, dizziness, repressed anger, frustration, resentment, irritability, etc. Try dōTERRA's Detoxing Blend: Zendocrine diluted on the belly or mixed with your epsom salts for extra support Gut-Hormone Connection  You might have heard of the gut being your second brain before, but did you know that the spleen and gut are associated with the emotions of worry and nervousness? This includes anxiety. Read more from this article by Health Harvard Gut health and digestion is SO IMPORTANT. A holistic approach to a basic reset protocol is dōTERRA's 30-Day Cleanse and Restore Kit. It covers 5 main systems all in 30-days. Remember you can keep it simple and start with 1 of the 5 until it becomes a habit and once you start to feel better incorporate another. Lifelong Vitality Pack: taking daily supplements for foundational support and health Drinking Citrus Oils: cleansing/detoxing digestive system, supporting emotions, and so much more ZenGest/DigestZen: the essential oil form, or the capsules. Taking a drop of EO after every meal as a gentle cleanser for your digestive system Terrazyme: another incredible supplement and digestive enzyme. This can also be taken after meals PB Assist: dōTERRA's powerful probiotic to support the growth of healthy bacteria and strong gut health. This is such a huge topic, and it needs an episode of it's own. I'm planning on inviting someone special on the show to talk all about this goodness! #5 Keep It Simple Healthy can be simple. Start implementing one thing you learned from today, like drinking more water or switching out toxic chemicals from your makeup collection or skincare. Follow your passion and your pleasure. Check in and ask what your heart wants! TAKE ACTION: Know your priorities; what is important to you, what's in alignment with your dream life or dream day? Invest in accountability; maybe a friend, or a coach, or join a like-minded group; tell your social media network what you're up to. Have a plan; create a plan that your accountability buddy helps you keep! Essential Oils for Reducing Cortisol & Blood Pressure: Bergamot, Lavender, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, Serenity, Peace, Whisper Oils for Your Liver: Zendocrine, Geranium, Frankincense Self-Care Oils: AromaTouch technique, Citrus oils, Balance Detox Oils: Zendocrine, Lemon, Smart & Sassy/Slim & Sassy, Oregano, Cilantro, On Guard, Citrus Bliss, Lemongrass, ZenGest/DigsstZen, Frankincense, Myrrh, Terrazyme (supplement) Oils for Anxiety & Calming: Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Melissa, Frankincense, Bergamot, Neroli, Wild Orange, Tangerine, Sandalwood, Clary Sage, Vetiver, Rose, Jasmine, Cedarwood, Serenity, Balance, Peace, Citrus Bliss Oils for Craving Control: Smart & Sassy (metabolic blend); a drop in water or in a veggie cap, Peppermint, grapefruit, lime, and spearmint and great to diffuse full show notes: www.valerielavignelife.com/02

We are so honored to have him on the podcast today! Website: http://www.drericz.com Dr. Eric Z's Essential Oils book:http://bit.ly/2OBqFV3 Essential Oil Masterclass: http://bit.ly/2xYkWiM Video Version: https://youtu.be/6rr_W6SfNd0   6:40 What are some of the top essential oils that support weight loss? 11:30 What kind of essential oil plan of attack do you recommend for people with autoimmune issues? 14:48 If you took your family on a vacation, and could only take 5 essential oils with you, which would you take?   Listener Questions: Q1- 15:51 Q: I have so enjoyed the couple of podcasts you’ve done about CBD oil. I have been taking it for my chronic pain and it has really helped me a lot- I am completely off all my prescription drugs! I know so many people that would benefit from CBD oil, for various conditions, including cancer, but I am receiving some weird push back from the Christian community who don’t  seem to understand the difference in illegal drugs and CBD oil, and also the people who think it is just another pyramid scheme. What would you say to both of these groups of people? - Janet in Atlanta Q2 - 18:09 My niece is currently undergoing chemotherapy for brain cancer and I can’t get her to consider an alternate approach to chemo, however, I have convinced her to take some essential oils IN ADDITION to the chemotherapy. What are the best oils that I should give her to help with the side effects, and what oils can I give her to possibly help the cancer from spreading or coming back? - Anette in Harrisonburg Q3 - 21:22 Since I cleaned up my diet, and focused on eating 80% clean, my thyroid is functioning so much better. I have significantly decreased the dosage of my medication. I really want to get off thyroid medication completely, and am curious how essential oils can help me with this goal? - Sandra in North Carolina Q4 - 28:59 What is your opinion on ingesting/swallowing essential oils? There are a lot of mixed reviews. Are there certain brands that are better to swallow than others, and are there certain oils that should not be swallowed? Also, I was taught that I need to put a carrier oil in my capsule but I don’t understand the point to that because once you swallow it and the capsule dissolves, it’s all going to the same place at the same time anyways! - Erica in Minnesota Q5 - 36:38  I struggle with really bad anxiety, but really don’t want to get on medication because I’ve heard stories from my friends. What are some of the best essential oils that I can use for my anxiety, and how should I be taking them- diffusing, swallowing, rubbing them on me, etc? I tried diffusing one oil called “Stress Away” which is a blend, at night time, and it gave me CRAZY dreams- which is the opposite of the effect I was going for lol. Do you think this caused my weird dreams or was it a coincidence? - Alex in Bedford Q6 - 41:58  I once went to an essential oil “party” where they were selling oils. The lady who led the party said that if there is an oil whose smell really offends us, our body is telling us that we need and crave that oil. Do you agree with this, and is there any truth to it? If so, will you explain? I’ve noticed one smell in particular that I can’t STAND is Clary Sage, and I’ve struggled with hormonal imbalance my whole life.  This kind of made met think her theory is true? - Jamie in Suffolk Q7 - 45:12 I want to start diffusing some oils in my office that will help make everyone alert and productive, especially in that afternoon slump. What are some of the best oils that I can diffuse that won’t be too strong smelling, but will really give everyone that extra UMPH we all need? Any ideas? -Corrie in Little Rock Q8 - 46:42 My son is almost five months, and I’ve had recurring Mastitis almost twice a month in both breasts since he was born. I really don’t want to stop breast feeding because of the cost associated with formula, and of course the health benefits. I also don’t want to constantly take antibiotics either! What are some oils that I can use that could help prevent the Mastitis from coming back, or atleast treat the symptoms? I know some oils are not safe for breast feeding, so I want to be REALLY careful. - Helen in Virginia Beach

Whether you’re new to essential oils or have been using them for quite some time, this episode is packed with valuable information that you wouldn’t want to miss! Dr. Mariza Snyder shares the best way to use essential oils for hormone balance, how we can use essential oils to manage stress, and so much more! Topics Discussed in this Episode: The best way to use essential oils for hormone balance How we can use essential oils to lower our stress and cortisol levels and support adrenal function The must-have essential oils when we are traveling How to differentiate a high-quality essential oil from a low-quality one The areas at home that we can use essential oils to reduce the toxic load Key Takeaways: One of the first steps to really get radical self-healing is self-awareness, where we are able to really become aware of how we are feeling, whether it’s feeling drained, exhausted, energized, or overly stressed, and how we begin to implement changes. Essential oils are able to bridge the gap between wanting healthy behaviors and habits and actually doing them. Essential oils are not synthetic hormones, but they work with our adrenals and they work with helping to balance that interplay between estrogen and progesterone. Dr. Mariza Snyder’s hormone blend: Place 10 drops of Clary Sage + 8 drops of Lavender + 8 drops of Geranium + 4 drops of Bergamot + 4 drops of Ylang-Ylang in a 10ml roller, and top it off with whatever carrier oil you prefer. Essential oils are the ultimate swap for the toxic products that you have at home as long as you have a couple of other key ingredients. For green cleaning, that’s just baking soda, vinegar, distilled water and essential oils.   Action Steps: Start your day with a morning ritual and end with an evening ritual. Lower your stress levels by doing the “power of the pause” breathwork with a combination of lavender and bergamot essential oils until you get back to a calm state of being. Swap your toxic products at home for safer DIY products using essential oils. Dr. Mariza Snyder said: “What I had found is that oils really made a lot of those healthy habits fun and rewarding and joyful, and that was awesome to me. And not only was it just a fun experience, but they really have these beautiful chemical constituents…” “A good friend of mine and one of my favorite aromatherapists and a mentor to me used to say, ‘You know what? The cool thing about essential oils is that you literally get to choose your mood. You can choose the way that you want to feel because of oils.’” Thanks for listening! Robb Wolf - The Paleo Solution Podcast - Paleo diet, nutrition, fitness, and health

It's time for Q&A #5 with Robb and Nicki for Episode 397 of the podcast. And don't forget to submit your own questions for the podcast here: https://robbwolf.com/contact/submit-a-question-for-the-podcast/ Enjoy!   Show Notes 1. [3:30] Are vegetables out to kill us? Robert says Hi Robb, I love the new format of the podcast, and really enjoy the episodes that leave the health sphere just a little. The episode about self-defense was a great listen! This question is really aimed to help you get rid of your pesky listeners - especially those that you've convinced to eat a meat and veggie diet. After the zero-carb episode with Dr. Shawn Baker, I decided to give carnivorousness shot. Some greasy used car salesman keeps telling me to try it and see how I look, feel and perform, so I figured might as well. To my surprise, I didn't develop horrendous constipation, gastrointestinal distress, or even scurvy. In fact, I felt pretty damn good. After a couple of weeks I started looking at re-introducing some higher fat foods into my diet, like avocado. In seeing who else has been down this road, I found that others stay with a carnivore diet avoid avocados, coconut, and other fatty fruits and veggies because of the high salicylate count. Holy smokes, now I've got another thing to worry about! I have no history, signs or symptoms or salicylate intolerance, so I'm wondering if salicylate intolerance is limited to only those who exhibit intolerance to salicylate, or can modern day marvels make others intolerant to salicylate as well? Yes, I'm trying to kid, but honestly I never knew how much gluten was dragging me down until I avoided it. At the end of the episode with Dr. Shawn Baker, he talks about how eating fruits is likely better than eating vegetables. Ignoring the fact that avocado is a fruit, is this the strategy you would take? I know I can introduce it and see how I feel. That strategy falls apart a little when the placebo effect is strong - getting objective measurements is pretty challenging at this point. And researching this feels like I'm hitting some dogmatic areas of the internet. What are your thoughts? Thanks much! Robert Side note: I signed up for the Keto Masterclass a while ago. I've been struggling with Keto for a couple of years - I seem to respond well to the ~70-100g carb range, getting down to 30g never worked. Well, going carnivore really helped with this! The meals I was eating lined up perfectly with the ketogains macro calculator. Not sure how many would buy into it, but this could be another tool in the keto toolkit. 2. [9:14] Storage kit in case of emergency Karen says: Hello, Some (or many??) years ago there was an article/blogpost (or maybe a podcast) on the website about which (paleo/keto) foods, drinks and other stuff you need to have in storage in case of an emergency. [11:00] Goal: Min effective dose for gaining several pounds of muscle--3-5 David says: Hi Rob, I'm 46, paleo for 8yrs, but not rigid, 165lbs, 10-12% body fat. In 2008 I was in great shape, but eating an unhealthy low carb diet and had food issues. I also hurt my shoulder and rehabbed for several months to get back to health. Also had back issues, albeit minor. I have always been good at backing off before major problems arise, except with the shoulder. I found Doug McGuff's book and a trainer who promoted that type of training as well and have been pain free ever since. I lift at a gym 2x/wk and do one-limb eccentric movements 7 reps with 10 sec negatives, then switch and resetting with help from other hand. Rest 1 min and do a regular set of 8-10 with 5 sec negatives. This is all machine for chest, legs, and a mix of the other parts of body. Wed workout is chest, back, shoulders 2 exercises each, and Fri is legs and arms-bi's and tri's. I really have grown to like the high intensity nature of the work out and have come to terms with sacrificing my former size --180 and in good shape. I'd like to be able to get bigger, without injury risk and extra time. I am guessing it takes much more sets and reps, and want to do it safely. Interested in new ideas. Thanks and I've really enjoyed following you since I found your article in '10 on Tim Ferriss's blog. [18:19] Maintaining a healthy gut after antibiotics Whitney says: Hi Robb and Nicki.  I would like your thoughts on protecting the gut after large doses of antibiotics.  A quick back story to my question is that my son had a ruptured appendix at the age of 11.  It took the doctors 4 days to figure out what was wrong and kept telling us he had a viral infection and to wait it out.  Three surgeries, two pic lines, multiple weeks of high doses of antibiotics (at 1 time he was on 3 doses of 1000mg of vancomyacin a day) and finally a case of c diff, we finally got him healthy.  I made them give him probiotics in the hospital and gave him  prescript assist on my own with the ok from his I.D. doctor.  At 15 he's seems perfectly healthy but I still wonder what the after effects of those doses of antibiotics will be down the road and how that will affect his health later on.  Are there any ways to regain what he lost in an instance like this? Also, I know this is long so feel free to shorten it however you need. Thanks for everything you do and know that you are making a huge impact on peoples lives out here in the real world.  Peace. I have been searching the internet to find some articles that address or refute this thinking but I haven't come up with much.  I grew up in a moderately health conscious family.  Probably about 15 years ago, my Dad heard a couple of bad things about pork/shellfish so that was cut out of our diets.  I since have started eating pork again as I got older and ate my own food and it's become a very regular thing since I haven't been living with them.  So I supposed what they heard was from Dr. Ted Broer and his reasoning is that pigs eat garbage and don't sweat, and shellfish are bottom feeders.  So the idea is that what you're eating is toxic.  I haven't read whatever book my dad read but heard about it a lot as a kid/teenager.  I'm hoping you can help explain to me the science - how pork & shellfish are safe as long as you are getting them from a good source.  Also, are there any nutrients that we can get from pork, but not other meats? The second part to my question is organ meats.  I have heard a lot about organ meats being very nutritious and high in iron, etc., but my mom just brought up that things like liver are filtering out toxins, so why would we eat that? Could you help me understand if that is a concern or if it isn't, why? Thank you so much, love listening to your show! [30:34] Keto/Paleo & Menopause Laurie says: Hey, Nicki and Robb! Huge fan of your work and appreciate the science behind the 'what' when it comes to eating and training to optimize health. My question is this: what food choices, workout tweaks or other possible naturopathic supplements might I look into as I navigate the epic joy that is menopause? Brief history for you: I stair-stepped into Paleo beginning about five years ago now (at around age 45), though I've been dairy free since my 30s. Since dipping into Keto about a year and a half ago and experimenting with macros, I think I've found my nutrition "sweet spot": around 50 grams of carbs (berries, chocolate, sweet potato), 90ish grams of protein (animal mostly, some plant proteins) and the rest from fats (coconut oils, animal fats, avocado, etc)...I'm 52,  5' 5 1/2" tall, 131 pounds and 17% body fat (per my last InBody reading)...I weight train 3-4 times a week (at least two of those super heavy), walk and garden a few days a week, run or do stair sprints every 7-10 days. Since I switched from a super low-fat, high carb, grain based diet, my HDL has risen, my triglycerides plummeted (from over 125 to 43!), my total cholesterol is improved and my fasted blood sugar is in the upper 70s, low 80s. My weight dropped from 150 and has been the same within a pound of two for five years running now... And then: menopause. My sleeping has gone to hell with night sweats and I've had all sorts of weird food reactions since going off birth control for good four months ago. Doctor's suggestion of going off, then back on the pill a year ago seemed to do a number on my gut and I became a mess. So I went back off the pill four months ago and did my own AIP protocol and think I found the culprits (almonds and nightshades). My gut issues are much improved and I'm trying some Black Cohosh and using Clary Sage for the hot flashes with mixed results. So, my question: I want to be back to feeling 110% all of the time (not a big ask, I don't think), but this menopause nonsense is getting on my last nerve. Anything I can do that doesn't include artificial HRT?  My insurance doesn't cover functional medicine, naturopathy or acupuncture, but I am hoping to change insurance. Thanks for any help or insight! Laurie

The power that floral essential oils can exert over mind and body has been known for centuries. For example, before Cleopatra sailed out to meet Marc Antony, she drenched the sails of her barge with the scent of jasmine—an aphrodisiac. He could not resist her. The faintest hint of a floral perfume can transport you back to a place in your memories, and evoke all the emotions that go with it. Why should something as ordinary as a scent have such a powerful effect upon you? It is because your sense of smell is governed by the limbic system—the most primitive part of your brain. The limbic system also governs your most intense emotions—joy, fear, desire, or rage. So an evocative scent has the power to reach into the deepest parts of your mind and body. When you smell any odor, you are reacting to volatile molecules that are wafting their way to odor receptors behind the bridge of your nose. From there, nerve impulses are carried to your limbic system. The chemical messages from the fragrance are then interpreted, and a response is sent by the hypothalamus to the rest of your body.   It was not until the 1920s that the extraordinary physical healing powers of essential oils began to be explored in depth. It was at this time that the birth of modern aromatherapy took place in the laboratory of a French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who became interested in the healing qualities of the natural essential oils that he used in his family’s perfume business. Then, one day Gattefosse burned his hand in a laboratory explosion and he immediately plunged his hand into a bowl of pure lavender oil. He was amazed to find how quickly the wound healed without even leaving a scar. It was Gattefosse who coined the word “aromatherapy,” in a 1928 scientific paper. Floral essential oils work from outside in. They impact your body and senses through your sense of smell and by absorption through your skin. When essential oils meet your human body, their molecules not only produce psychological responses like euphoria and increased alertness as well as relaxation but also induce direct and measurable pharmacological changes through your blood stream. They affect your hormones and glandular system, your metabolic processes, and your nervous system, and subtly induce healing on many levels. There are over 1000 aromatherapy oils on the market—about 30% of them derived from flowers. Each floral essential oil has its own distinct personality, which is sometimes quite different from its ‘soul energy,’ which comes through in flower essence healing. Each can be used singularly or in combination. If you have not yet experienced the blessings of floral essential oils in your life, you are in for a treat. Here are some of my favorite flowers, from which teas can be made and whose essential oils or absolutes can be used for a multitude of other purposes. Get to know their healing effects and their uses, then experiment with them in your own life. SACRED ESSENTIAL OILS To open to the abundance of the universe Rose Otto, Neroli, Lavender To clear unhelpful habits and thought patterns Carnation, Tuberose, Hyssop For increased confidence and self-worth Geranium, Rose Maroc, Ylang Ylang To release guilt Clary Sage, Jasmine, Linden Blossom To enhance the connection with your higher self Rose Maroc, Jasmine, Neroli Immerse yourself in a bath laced with essential oils. Breathe in the mind-altering aroma while you absorb the life-enhancing molecules through your skin. Don't disrupt the experience with perfumed soaps, shampoos, or body washes. If you need to get clean, shower first, then bask in the full aromatherapy experience. Once you emerge from your bath, let yourself enjoy the floral aura that you will carry with you for hours. The simplest method for taking an aromatherapy bath is to sprinkle a few drops of essential oil into your bath, swish it around so that the oil is well dispersed, then immerse yourself. Begin with only 2 drops of essential oil in a tub of water then gradually build up over a period of weeks to 4-7 drops. This may seem like a very small amount, but undiluted essences are extremely potent. More than this could irritate your skin. Also be aware that some florals stimulate while others sedate. For example, if you want a relaxing bath, choose an essential oil like lavender, which has a sedating effect, and use it in warm rather than hot water (somewhere between 28-35 degrees C). If you need invigoration, use a stimulating essential oil like neroli and take a shorter, hotter bath (around 35-39 degrees C). If you prefer a moisturizing bath, make your own bath oil blend by combining the following ingredients: To each 1-2 teaspoons of avocado oil or sweet almond oil, add 1 drop of a mild shampoo 2-5 drops of essential oil Shake the mixture in a small glass jar or bottle and add the blend to your bath. Experiment with your essential oils singly or in combination. Don’t use more than 3-5 drops of essential oil in total. Each has its own personality, and you will quickly learn which ones help you most and in which situations. Above all, have fun experimenting. Rediscover the ancient art of bathing that the Romans knew so well. Take time out to indulge your senses with a prolonged floral soak. It will benefit you in so many ways that it would be hard to list them all.

There is also a blend of 11 oils, called ClaryCalm (formerly called Solace) that helps relieve the pain of cramping.  It is a great multi-purpose oil for females as it also provides relief from nausea, hot flashes and the emotional swings that come with the hormone cycle.  ClaryCalm is a blend of Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedar Wood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa and Vitex.  It also helps support healthy hormone levels, PMS and Menopause.  It comes in a 10 ml roll on bottle which is great because you can stick it in your purse and apply the oil easily even when you are not at home.   I haven't personally used theClaryCalm because I don't have a lot of female issues.  However, I'm going to get some to have on hand because there are times when I think I'm a little more emotional due to hormones.  Again, I would recommend the hot compress if possible if you are treating cramps.  For treating nausea, hot flashes and emotional swings, I would recommend putting ClaryCalm/Solace on the bottoms of the feet (because thepores are larger there).  Putting it over the heart will help with mood swings.  If you are somewhere where you can't apply it, just opening the bottle and inhaling it will help.http://healingheartoils.blogspot.com/2012/11/treating-menstrual-cramps-with-doterra_8.html www.crsradio.com 661-467-2407
