Gov. Newsom attends the April snow survey in the Sierra. Also, an investigation into a rise in jail deaths across the state. Finally, a memoir studying hip hop culture “Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula, Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy.” April Snow Survey Gov. Gavin Newsom traveled to the April 1 snow survey in El Dorado County held by the Department of Water Resources near Echo Summit. For the second year in a row, California's snowpack is above the historical average - this year the snowpack is 110%, which is considered the peak snowpack for the season and critical for water managers as it marks the transition to spring snowmelt into the state's rivers and reservoirs. Jay Lund is a professor emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Vice-Director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences and joins us with more on what this means for California's evolving water needs. Investigating California Jail Deaths CalMatters Reporter Nigel Duara discusses his investigation into jail deaths in the state which found that despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's pledge to address a rise in jail deaths early in his administration, fentanyl overdoses and suicides have death rates at historic highs - even though California jails are holding thousands fewer people. Memoir ‘Dancing the Afrofuture' A UC Davis professor's new memoir, titled Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula, Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy, chronicles her journey from being a dancer-activist in the Bay Area, to an academic scholar studying hip-hop culture. Author Dr. Halifu Osumare, Professor Emerita of African American & African Studies at UC Davis joins Insight to talk about how this transition from art to academia came to be, and how dance has been a “survival mechanism” for people of African descent to preserve culture and values.

Here in Episode 99 I chat with April Snow about how to honor yourself as a sensitive therapist and business owner. Highly Sensitive Therapists (HSTs) are naturally more empathetic, perceptive, and impacted by their work with clients. To bypass burnout, it's essential to look within to create a practice that aligns with your needs on every level - from how you decorate your office to when you schedule sessions to what trainings you take. Instead of looking around to decide what you're supposed to do, use your inner guide as a compass. HSTs have different needs and it's essential to give yourself permission to break the rules of how you're supposed to be as a therapist. When you design an HSP-friendly routine, practice, and lifestyle - you are capable of feeling deep fulfillment and creating deep, meaningful impact for your clients. ~~~Connect with April...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sensitivetherapist Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Support.for.HSTs Sustainable Practice Roadmap Program: Simple Systems and Community Support to Feel More Energized and Fulfilled as a Sensitive Therapist. Medical injury occurs at a rate of about 12 per cent of admissions, and errors without consequence at a higher rate still. According to Australian and New Zealand guidance documents, disclosure of error “is a patient right, anchored in professional ethics, considered good clinical practice, and is part of the care continuum.” But many practitioners are fearful of the medicolegal consequences of disclosure, or unsure about how to present the details of a challenging episode in care. In this podcast we hear how they can provide victims of adverse healthcare incidents with the comfort they seek. April 20 marked the official one-month mark into the spring season, but Mother Nature apparently didn't get the memo. A storm set a slew of records for daily snowfall amounts for the date. The system is also the culprit behind much colder air arriving across the Midwest and Northeast. This week I go into the subject of high sensitivity with April Snow from The Highly Sensitive Person Facebook group. We discuss what it means to be highly sensitive, how to tell if you or your clients are highly sensitive, how to engage in supervision as a highly sensitive person, and a general discussion of what some highly sensitive people (and therapists) might be experiencing during the various challenges of 2020.
If you’re a highly sensitive person (HSP), chances are you have trouble finding your voice—and that can cause a lot of anxiety. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush welcomes back psychotherapist April Snow, who talks about how you can learn to trust your voice, set healthy boundaries and speak up for your needs. Quotes: “When you’re highly sensitive, that sensation is loud.” — April Snow “We start to doubt ourselves. We start to silence that inner wisdom, that intuition.” — April Snow “Anxiety is a big marker that you’re living a lifestyle that’s not quite in alignment with your temperament.” — April Snow “Because of our level of empathy, if someone else is hurting, we’re hurting.” — April Snow “A lot of time when HSPs are anxious, it’s just because they’re doing too much.” — April Snow “Saying ‘No’ some of the time is actually preserving the relationship.” — April Snow EPISODE 128 Show Notes: You pick up on things in your environment—things others don’t notice. You feel much more deeply than others do. When others can’t or won’t validate your perceptions and emotions, you begin to stop trusting yourself. That’s the plight of the highly sensitive person (HSP). In this episode of the Woman Worriers podcast, host Elizabeth Cush, of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., and her guest April Snow, a San Francisco-based psychotherapist and highly sensitive person, delve deeper into what it means to be an HSP and an introvert, how being an HSP might make it more difficult to know and trust your voice, and how you can find your voice and start to learn to advocate for your needs in order to ease you anxiety. Listen and learn: The core characteristics of a highly sensitive person Why being highly sensitive might lead you to doubt yourself and silence your voice What it means to be an HSP and an introvert—and why it can feel exhausting and overwhelming Why so many highly sensitive women experience anxiety Why it’s important to set limits on how much you take on—and why it can be hard to do so How empathy and guilt are related The small lifestyle changes that can make the biggest difference in easing your anxiety How to recognize what’s really making you anxious Ways to explore boundary-setting and to identify different steps you could take to feel more comfortable The power of the pause and the reality check Three things you should think about before saying “yes” (or “no”) Ways to get the time you need to make a decision that feels right How to say “No” when saying “No” feels too hard—and why it’s OK to say “No” How self-compassion work can help The benefits you can experience when you treat yourself with care and compassion Learn More > April Snow, LMFT, bio > April Snow’s Expansive Heart website > The Expansive Heart on Instagram > The Expansive Heart on Facebook > Simple Self-Care Tools to Reduce Anxiety + Overwhelm by April Snow > “How to Set Boundaries as an HSP” by April Snow > “How to Overcome Dissatisfaction in Your Relationship as an HSP” by April Snow > The CBT Workbook for Perfectionism: Evidence-Based Skills to Help You Let Go Of Self-Criticism, Build Self-Esteem, and Find Balance by Sharon Martin, MSW, LCSW > Self-Compassion Guided Meditations and Exercises by Dr. Kristen Neff > Divergent Mind: Thriving in a World That Wasn’t Designed for You by Jenara Nerenberg > The Highly Sensitive Parent: Be Brilliant in Your Role Even When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. In this episode, I share my experience with Selective Mutism as a child and how creative resilience was a factor in me coming out of my shell. I was a REALLY shy kid. Like almost got held back in kindergarten because I wouldn't talk to anyone. The turned-my-head-away-from-anyone-who-looked-at-me type of shy. BUT. Put me in front of a tree and I would figure out how to climb it; to the very top. Throw me a kickball and I'd come up with a new game with my best friend/cousin. Tell me a story and I'd write three more endings. Give me one of those awesome square washcloth-making loom crafts and I'd make 50 of them in a day. (Bless my mom, she claimed everyone at work bought them for $1 each. Years later I found them hidden in a drawer!) And that was the saving grace for me. I had parents who endlessly supported my creativity throughout my childhood, teens, and early adult years. My dad being a musician was always giving me a high-five for picking up another instrument. My mom, a total craft-a-holic, would allow me to watch over her shoulder for hours as she made wood-burned spoons, Christmas dough ornaments, and stained glass stars (she made those for our wedding!). With all of that support, I eventually broke out of my shell and flourished in the right circumstances. I was lucky. So many of the children we work with don't have incredibly supportive parents. So many children have faced insurmountable trauma. So many children have developmental differences that make even the simplest things, incredibly difficult. TITLE Honoring the Highly Sensitive Introvert GUEST Nicole Burgess, LMFT EPISODE OVERVIEW What do people need to know about introverts? Do introverts tend to need more time to process? Do they tend to process internally vs. processing verbally in the moment? Are introverts shy, anxious, or do they hate people? Are introverts slow to warm up? We tackle some common myths about introversion. This is a fun, spontaneous interview, with lots of laughter. We have a messy, raw conversation about the difference between therapy and coaching that goes badly. HIGHLIGHTS Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), are really in-tune with things vs. calling it highly sensitive The biggest difference between coaching and therapy is there is no diagnosis and people are mentally healthier; meaning they have a stronger sense of self, yet are open to going deeper in letting go of old beliefs/mindsets, etc. I also think we therapists are great coaches because we know how to ask great questions; help in getting people to move forward in their lives vs stay in a disempowered mode. We also have training in communication, boundaries, and so much. Each of us can bring our skills as therapists and other professions into coaching What’s the difference between coaching and therapy? Is therapy only about the past and coaching is only about the future? What are the benefits of online coaching or therapy? What kind of coaches do therapists make? Introversion—True or false? Introverts are “shy, anxious, hates people” True or false? introverts struggle w self-confidence and don’t know their souls What does the world need to know about introverts? A special shout out to April Snow for connecting many of us Highly Sensitive Therapists What do we do when we’re in a social situation and we don’t feel heard, and one person is dominating the conversation? On the Season Three premiere of This Is Not What I Ordered, I sit down with April Snow as she shares how her life-long health journey with eczema and high sensitivity has taught her how to live an authentic life without guilt. April is a psychotherapist and Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) who encourages others to embrace their own sensitive superpowers through mindfulness, self-reflection, and self-care strategies. Her experiences with chronic illness and sensitivity helped create the foundation for her psychotherapy practice, Expansive Heart, where she’s able to support other highly sensitive people as they learn to let go of self-doubt and prioritize themselves. April’s passion for self-advocacy and her ability to see the unique blessings of her health challenges is inspiring. During this episode, she opens up about how being highly sensitive has helped her understand her illness, the importance of self-acceptance in the healing process, and how she’s learned to create boundaries along the way.

If you’re always in tune with the vibe around you, and often overwhelmed by it, your brain may be wired differently. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush interviews April Snow, a psychotherapist, about what it’s like to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and how HSPs can manage the anxiety and overwhelm that come hand in hand with the trait.
There is something for all of us to take away and learn from this conversation. In today’s episode, I want to go deeper into the work that Elaine Aron has done over the years about these traits, ways to take care of yourself if you are an HSP or help shed some light if you are in a relationship with an HSP or raising an HSP child. In episode 10, I will be speaking with Julie Bjelland about parenting an HSP child and/or being an HSP parent with non-HSP children. Episode 11, I am speaking with April Snow about raising awareness and supporting clients who are HSPs. Plus her work in raising awareness for psychotherapists and healers in ending the comparison game to non-HSPs colleagues. For full show notes: www.NicoleBurgessCoaching.com/ep9 In this episode: Elaine Aron has been researching high sensitivity since 1991 Traits of highly sensitive person (HSP) also called Sensory-Processing Sensitivity (SPS) 70% are introverts and 30% are extroverts Just as many men as women who are highly sensitive Can be an HSP and sensation seeking person What DOES is and means: Depth of processing, Overarousability, Emotional Intensity, and Sensory Sensitivity Depth of processing-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies-brain activities in particular areas are activated-deeper processing and reflect more. Overarousability-Easily Overstimulated/Overaroused-too bored or too overstimulated and going for optimal level. Emotional Intensity-Emotionally Responsive/Reactive-Prone to strong positive and negative affects whereas nonsensitives in the same given situation will have emotions but maybe not as strongly. Sensory Sensitivity-Usually arises from processing of stimuli-can manifest as low threshold, ability to distinguish subtleties, and sometimes low tolerance of high levels of sensory input. Often all 3 present. If you had a difficult childhood (abusive, lack of emotional support, trauma) can be more prone to have anxiety or depression but if had positive and warm or securely attached, childhood no more susceptible than non-HSP. Think you’ve got to be someone else in order to succeed in your business? Nope. April Snow shares how she ignored the noise and listened to her wise inner voice as she was setting up her private practice. She knew she wanted to work with Highly Sensitive People, and that’s what she does, quite successfully. Listen as we dive into her entrepreneurial journey. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Taking the leap and niching with highly sensitive people Clearing away the noise and taking her time with business decisions Managing the overwhelm of private practice with self-care and systems Taking self-care seriously Starting a community for Highly Sensitive Therapists Being OK with seeing fewer clients every week Her journey of taking her fee from 120 up to 175 and soon higher Getting comfortable with money Her writing routine The Highly Sensitive Therapists Retreat in July in Santa Cruz Marketing without getting overwhelmed A sneak peek at her 5-year plan Show notes at http://coachingwithannie.com/podcast/april-snow
Approximately 20% of the world’s population carries the Highly Sensitive personality trait. That’s basically 1 in 5 people you’ll encounter on a given day. You might be highly sensitive yourself. But there’s quite a bit of stigma that comes along with the word “sensitive” and the term “Highly Sensitive Person” (HSP) is often misunderstood. Given that most therapists and healers are also HSPs and about 50% of their clientele are as well, it’s imperative that we demystify the gifts and challenges that Highly Sensitive People experience internally and put forth into the world. As an HSP myself, I’m thrilled to be talking with April Snow, AMFT, a therapist who focuses on HSPs in her practice and runs an incredible online community for highly sensitive therapists. The topic of high sensitivity is so big that it’s a real challenge to say it all in the span of a single episode. But, April and I really touch on a lot, from defining what the HSP trait really is and the gifts and challenges that come with it, the importance of processing time and radical self-acceptance, the challenges of parenting HSP children, to the differences between introverted and extroverted HSPs as well as the differences between extroverted HSPs and non-HSP extroverts. We also dip a toe into the importance of letting the joy in and what that means to an HSP, the isolation and loneliness HSPs are prone to, and the hero/heroine’s journey that all HSPs need to step fully into themselves. And, we discuss how embracing your highly sensitive nature completely alters the way you work and market yourself, allowing effort, hustle and selling yourself to fall away as your YOU-ness surfaces and resonates effortlessly. I want to delve deeper into the topic of HSPs, but I would love to hear your questions about life and work as a HSP, and working with other HSPs. You can submit your questions here: practiceofbeingseen.com/the-highly-sensitive-series-query Quoted in the Episode: There’s this misperception that sensitivity is weakness. But, actually, there’s a lot of strength there. Doesn’t it take bravery and strength to feel all those emotions? And to feel them so deeply, to go to those places within yourself? That’s brave. - April Snow You see a lot of highly sensitive therapists questioning their ability to do the work long-term, which breaks my heart because it can be overwhelming without taking into account your temperament, carving time in for yourself during the day and making sure you get a good lunch, not overscheduling yourself and getting the right supports where they need to be. Those are all really important so that you can allow these gifts to come forward. - April Snow I’m starting to see a pattern in these conversations where we get to a point where we identify yet another form of othering. Another way that we’re separate or we’re different. And then there’s this quest, this desire to belong and to reintegrate things, but integrate them from a place of holding ourselves in our differences and not dimming the light on those things. Those things are what make us who we are. - Rebecca Wong What could we unlearn that is actually causing us to feel these things that are detrimental to our being? - Rebecca Wong Resources Referenced in this Episode: April’s Facebook group for Highly Sensitive Therapists Pioneer researcher of HSP personality trait, Elaine Aron, PhD. Women In-Depth: Conversations about the Inner Lives of Women
Welcome to the podcast! Today I’m very excited to be joined by April Snow, a psychotherapist in San Francisco, California who wants to help you heal your past wounds, embrace your true self and begin to thrive again. In an effort to survive the struggles of early life or cope with present-day stressors, we often become disconnected from ourselves, needs and innate internal resources. We also may lack connection and nurturance during these difficult times, making them even more challenging to navigate. April's own journey towards emotional healing and growth has come most easily through safe connections with another. By offering a compassionate and supportive atmosphere suited specifically to your needs, she aims to be that safe place for you to explore your deepest feelings without judgement. April helps her clients explore these areas of deep suffering or disconnection; their current impact; and how the impact prevents them from living fully. April truly believes that when we can begin to feel, we can finally begin to heal. Full show notes available at - https://lourdesviado.com/womenindepth
