Fly Fishing Angler, leather artist, painter, muralist, Marine Veteran, interior designer, and so much more. Annie has had a life rich in the fly fishing community and the creative arts. Her work is stunningly beautiful and her story is full of adventure. Thanks Annie, we loved talking with you. Guest: Annie Margarita Email: anniemargaritaart@gmail.com Phone: 541-215-2022 Websites: AnnieMargarita.com FlyGirlLeather.com Social Media: Facebook YouTube Bio: Annie has been a professional artist since 1993 when she got out of the Marine Corps and went to Florida to work in the theme parks as a scenic artist. Working all over the U.S., Portugal and Holland building aquarium, museum and zoo exhibits, she got injured in Holland, so she went back to Tucson, her hometown, to recover from her injuries. While she was recuperating she started her own mural company which later lead to a degree in Interior Design and a contracting company for paint, custom plaster and murals. She expanded her company in Colorado, but went back to Tucson in 2008, when she joined up with local fly shop Drycreek Outfitters and the gentlemen there got her into Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. She learned to cast better, tie flies, and build a fly rod, which then lead her to want to build a fly rod case out of leather. Annie found that leather was her favorite medium and started creating cases, handbags and other accessories. She started selling her products online which allowed her the freedom to pack up everything, buy an RV and took off out of Tucson to find all the rivers that she dreamed about. After about a year and a half, she went to Pendleton, Oregon for it’s annual leather convention. She dug in and opened a gallery leather store on Main Street, then the Veteran’s Administration granted her another shot at earning a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Bert de Klerk at McKenzie River Inn, on the mighty McKenzie River in Nimrod, Oregon, home of the Drift Boat, offered her an Artist in Residence position while she attended school. She has a double major in Cinema Studies and Art & Technology Animation and graduated in December 2019. Annie also teaches leather working, fine art painting and online mural classes with ThePaintHive.com, operating her studio at the former inn. When Editor Sue Collins, of several Lifestyle Publications, was first introduced to fly fishing, it was to gain knowledge before writing an article. That experience was so motivating that she picked up a fly rod and has not looked back since. Now Sue, a fellow member of Georgia Women’s Fly Fishers is out on the water as much as she can. Today we talk with Sue about what she has learned. Guest: Sue Collins Website: www.lifestylepubs.com Social Media: Instagram Bio: Sue Collins is an Atlanta-based magazine editor and travel writer. She hails from Michigan and graduated from University of Oregon, later around the world with her husband who was a sailmaker. Together, they have three grown children (and a beautiful 1-year old grandson) and have lived in for Atlanta 10 years. Sue studied marine biology, until she realized chemistry and numbers were not her strength. She’s always loved being on and under the water, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling and swimming where ever her journey took her. Her first time with a fly rod was on the Provo River outside Park City, Utah. Since then, she’s fished north Georgia’s creeks and rivers and looks forward to fishing during the summer in northern Michigan where her family has spent summers for four generations. Sue joined Georgia Women Fly Fishers last year, got her first fly rod for Christmas and practices casting in the downtown Atlanta park near her house and tries to fish whenever she can. In this installment of our Artist Series, we talk with Megan about her talents for turning foraging opportunities in the forests and woods into beautiful pieces of natural art. Megan turns shelf fungi, weathered wood, paint and other natural materials into painted fish, wildlife, and scenes of nature. Guest: Megan Scott Scripts Email: muddymaggie22@gmail.com Social Media: Facebook Instagram Bio: My name is Megan Scripps, I’m a 35 year old stay at home mother of two beautiful boys, Declan (5) and Brodie (3). I’ve also added to my life a small art business, incorporating my love of the outdoors, art, foraging and now fishing. Art has been a large part of my life as far back as childhood. I remember walking my suburban streets looking for odd bits of broken toys and bottle caps to glue together and bring home as “presents” for my family. When I finally was introduced to the woods, rivers, and streams, I was surrounded by inspiration, at that point nature art was all I found myself wanting to create. I recently started painting fish. it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to go fishing and I have missed it horribly. My best fishing memory took place when I was visiting Marco Island, Florida. My Father in-law also has a large boat and I pulled up a Goliath Grouper, with a little help I must admit because it felt like a car was at the other end of the line. To know I’d caught that big green beautiful monster felt like quite the accomplishment. Having two little boys and a thriving business has limited some of my outdoor adventures but being able to make art for a living is a dream come true for me, that I’m grateful for every day. It all started innocently enough when Jill’s sister asked for some of Jill’s pottery pieces for a silent auction. The custom designed pottery with designs of trout and flies quickly took off. Fast forward about 30 years when my sweet husband gave me a gift certificate for a pottery lesson to learn how to throw on the wheel. From then on, I was hooked! For the next ten years, I’ve continued to learn, practice, and create. Today, I can most often be found in my studio in the basement of our home, doing what I love to do. Nowadays, my husband of 37 years and I enjoy our home on five acres in Castle Rock, Colorado, with a gorgeous view of the Rocky Mountains from our back deck (and from my studio). A couple years into guiding, Kara found herself underwhelmed with the selection of outdoor fishing apparel for women and girls. There was a gap that needed to be filled in the industry. Charlotte is an up and coming young angler full of excitement and enthusiasm! We met Charlotte and her father at the Atlanta Fly Fishing Show earlier this year. She was eager to share her love of fly fishing with us and her passion for the sport is contagious! Charlotte does not hesitate when taking on a moving river, fly fishing classes, or learning new techniques with the support of her father. Charlotte is still in grammar school but she gets in her fishing time and continues to grow as an angler. Talking with Charlotte and other young anglers brings a fresh perspective to fly fishing and shows us the future of fly fishing is in good hands! Charlotte wants to continue improving her skills while sharing her passion with other new anglers. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Charlotte as she continues her fly fishing journey! Guest: Charlotte Bio: I was 3 or 4 years old when I started fly fishing. I really enjoyed it, so my dad took me out fishing more often when I was more comfortable doing it. My dad took me to a place called Bear Creek which is located right outside of Denver, Colorado. I am originally from Colorado, then moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2017. My favorite place to fish is Rocky Mountain National Park. Here, we have caught more than 100 brook trout and cutthroat trout in one day! The reason I like it is because it is beautiful plus we would see many elk. Cataloochee located in Smoky Mountain National Park, is my second favorite place to fish. The campsites are nice, close to the river and fishing is great. We also see elk here like we used to see on our Rocky Mountain trips. (On one trip here, we saved a toad from getting run over on the road!!) I’m in the 5th grade. I don’t really talk about fly fishing at school, but I do want to talk to a local Trout Unlimited member and my teachers about trout in the classroom. I have been a Trout Unlimited member for many years. This is Fly Girl Fish episode 033, first aired on 04/30/2020.

It’s Sarah Bakers job to make sure we have trout to fish in our Georgia waters. Have you ever thought, who cares for the trout before they are released, either in delayed harvest or through out the year? It’s the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and biologists like Sarah Baker, Trout Biologist from the Wildlife Resources Division of the DNR who take their job very seriously, wade in our waters year round, testing, recording data, and making sure our trout are healthy, growing and spawning under the right conditions. All this to preserve the species and make sure they are thriving, so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. She quickly left that discipline to develop her fly fishing skills with her Dad and dog Ranger by her side. She hasn’t looked back since. Lil D talked with us at FGF about how she started, what she enjoys about fly fishing, and how she can share her love of the sport with her friends. Listening to Lil D talk about all her achievements she’s had by the age of 10 is really inspiring. The future for young ladies in this sport is very bright, especially when Lil D is leading the way. Guest: Deighan Social Media: Instagram Yellow Sally Fishing On Instagram On Facebook Bio: At the age of 10 Deighan has been flyfishing more than half her life. Living in central Texas she has 365 days a year to practice her art. At age 7 D was told by a student at school that fishing was for boys and her Instagram account @marchbrowneyedun was born. Finding and following several thousand other lady anglers in one night put away all doubts of her place on the water. Wanting to return the favor, her account became a source of inspiration and encouragement to other girls and women to enjoy fly fishing. D is determined to reach 50/50 on the water and has been sharing what she has learned with many other girls her age. Seeking her casting instructor certification she is the youngest person to pass the bronze level casting skills challenge from Fly Fishers International. D has tied flies at several shops and shows from NY to CO and fishes almost exclusively flies she tied. She shares her love of tying flies through live online tutorials and in person occasionally competing in iron fly contests against adults. She is an active member of Texas Women Fly Fishers hoping to supplement their many on the water outings with fly tying sessions. A published writer and aspiring photographer D chronicles her adventures through journaling and social media hoping to inspire and encourage any woman or girl with an interest in trying the previously male dominated sport of fly fishing. Jackie Kutzer started as a retail associate for the Orvis company. Now, because of the passion she saw in her customers and now husband, Orvis Casting Instructor, Peter Kutzer, Jackie is on a new mission. Her fly fishing story began at Orvis but now is soaring to new heights as the Co-Founder of 50/50 On The Water. Jackie has a love for salt water angling but with fly fishing she fell in love not only with her husband Pete, but with the art of the fly cast and that love lead her to learn more. Jackie watched women become interested in fly fishing, take a fly tying class, then a trip, and then go off to develop deep meaningful relationships, form fly fishing organizations, and stay in touch over the years with common enthusiasm of fishing and learning together. In this podcast we will only touch on her co founder role with 50/50 on the water and will soon bring her back with her co founding partner Christine Atkins to take a deeper dive in to how 50/50 is growing by leaps and bounds. Fly Girl Fish recently spent time with Devin Lancaster, founder of Southern Hackle Outfitters in Atlanta. Devin brings his love and knowledge of the outdoors to everything he does. He was learning to cast & mend a fly line with his father at the age of 7 and learning ways to be prepared for situations he may face in the wilderness. As his fly fishing skills improved, he gained a love and passion for wild brown trout and the native brook trout found in the headwater streams of the north Georgia mountains. He started Southern Hackle Outfitters as way to raise awareness for these native fish and to bring new people into the sport of fly fishing. If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, patient guide who has a great love for sharing knowledge then Devin is your man. Devin also has a blog on his web site where he shares humor and his perspective on relevant topics. Check it out! We’re excited that Devin took time to spend with us and we hope to have him on again! As the first to air in our “artist series” Kristin Ellis, who owns Fish Girl Glass, talks to us about her talents in stained glass. Kristin designs and creates beautiful stained glass pieces for anglers, hunters, and others in beautiful glass colors. Her craft allows her to work closely with her clients thru commission, and to carefully piece together a stained glass design inside of a clients favorite old fish net frame, or just a free flowing design based on the clients desire. Kristin accepts commissions thru her Facebook page. If you are interested in this beautiful addition for your lake house or want it for your home or as a gift, listen in. Fly Girl Fish is happy to be doing podcasts with as many people as we can find who touch the industry and sport we all love. Look for others in our artist series soon.
