In this essay, Fred Bahnson, author of Soil and Sacrament: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith, offers a tribute to the preeminent nature writer Barry Lopez. Originally published in Notre Dame Magazine, we are republishing “An Unbroken Grace” to commemorate the first anniversary of Barry's death. In 2018, Fred spent several days with Barry at his longtime home in Finn Rock, Oregon, along the McKenzie River. As he recalls the time that the two spent together beneath old growth Douglas firs, Fred reflects on the life of this great writer whose numinous encounters and lifelong adoration of mystery informed his practice of living in service to the power of story as a way to illuminate and heal. LIVE TODAY @ 4:00 pm Pacific It's the Boze Noze Show! Holy smoke it has been a week of hazardous air quality but the end of the bad air is supposed to be tomorrow with some rain forecast but we have been hearing "tomorrow will be better" for a week now. The good part of the inversion and calm winds is that it suppresses fire behavior and the minimal resource we have to fight this fire have been able stop further progress into neighborhoods. We have even been able to lower some of the evacuation levels to allow folks back into their homes. The big fire in Lane County along the McKenzie River valley, now called the Holiday Farm Fire, is now at 167,400 acres and eight percent contained and the Red Cross has 890 people housed in 12 hotels with a new shelter opened this morning at Churchill High Schoo so nobody should be sleeping in their car. Lane County has opened a Multi-Agency Resource Center for those displaced by the fire as a one stop shop for connecting to services and information. Our first report on structures from the survey team reports over 300 as a total loss and they are not done yet. At least there has been only one confirmed death which is amazing for such a fast spreading fire. If you don't want to talk about these topics or if you do, give me a call! “No one can miss the alarm now in the air.” Barry Lopez, “Horizon”He was born on the Epiphany of 1945 and died this Christmas. During a reading years ago, he created a spell of silence over the crowd with a particularly compelling piece. He could have taken a personal bow, but instead simply said; “English is a beautiful, powerful language, isn’t it.” He kept a “piece of eight” from a 17th century Spanish shipwreck on his desk, not because it was cool; “I keep this coin to remind me of the capacity of human beings to destroy other human beings on a massive scale for money.” Almost immediately after our interview, the Holiday Farm fire in Oregon razed his property on the banks of the McKenzie River, arguably a result of climate change he so passionately wrote about. Soon after, he died. On a recent springtime walk surrounded by budding vine maples, well into his prostate cancer, he talked about these disturbing times and, on losing hope, said; “how embarrassing to give up when everything around you is growing.”He spent thirty years writing his final book, the masterwork “Horizon.” Somehow, he recognized its ending back then, just an old man walking down a narrow road in Port Famine, Patagonia, with crested caracara falcons inexplicably spaced evenly along the way in quarter-mile increments, watching from fenceposts. Some “Horizon” quotes and unfinished phrases as enticements:· “The treacherous void between ourselves and the world…” · "The neurosis of consumerism…"· "…the weight of the horror we force on one another in our manic quests for greater satisfaction."· “We are creating our own evolutionary pressures…” · Of destroyed indigenous tribes: “Each eventually became another torn prayer flag, snapping in the wind over burnt ground.” · “As our own cultures continue to unfold around the riptides of aggressive commerce and heedless development…”· Our survival demands an “unprecedented level of imagination…some capacity hinted at but not yet realized.”· We are “…creating a spatial and temporal dysfunctionality, that increasingly produce despair instead of hope.”· The storyteller creates “a place where wisdom reveals itself.” · We need to adapt to technology without “pharmaceutical help.” · “…cynical corporate manueverings to secure the last waters…” · “… we shimmer with intentionality, erotic grace and balletic capability…”Farewell Barry.
Fly Fishing Angler, leather artist, painter, muralist, Marine Veteran, interior designer, and so much more. Annie has had a life rich in the fly fishing community and the creative arts. Her work is stunningly beautiful and her story is full of adventure. Thanks Annie, we loved talking with you. Guest: Annie Margarita Email: anniemargaritaart@gmail.com Phone: 541-215-2022 Websites: AnnieMargarita.com FlyGirlLeather.com Social Media: Facebook YouTube Bio: Annie has been a professional artist since 1993 when she got out of the Marine Corps and went to Florida to work in the theme parks as a scenic artist. Working all over the U.S., Portugal and Holland building aquarium, museum and zoo exhibits, she got injured in Holland, so she went back to Tucson, her hometown, to recover from her injuries. While she was recuperating she started her own mural company which later lead to a degree in Interior Design and a contracting company for paint, custom plaster and murals. She expanded her company in Colorado, but went back to Tucson in 2008, when she joined up with local fly shop Drycreek Outfitters and the gentlemen there got her into Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. She learned to cast better, tie flies, and build a fly rod, which then lead her to want to build a fly rod case out of leather. Annie found that leather was her favorite medium and started creating cases, handbags and other accessories. She started selling her products online which allowed her the freedom to pack up everything, buy an RV and took off out of Tucson to find all the rivers that she dreamed about. After about a year and a half, she went to Pendleton, Oregon for it’s annual leather convention. She dug in and opened a gallery leather store on Main Street, then the Veteran’s Administration granted her another shot at earning a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Bert de Klerk at McKenzie River Inn, on the mighty McKenzie River in Nimrod, Oregon, home of the Drift Boat, offered her an Artist in Residence position while she attended school. She has a double major in Cinema Studies and Art & Technology Animation and graduated in December 2019. Annie also teaches leather working, fine art painting and online mural classes with ThePaintHive.com, operating her studio at the former inn. This is Fly Girl Fish episode 053, first aired on 09/10/2020.
LIVE TODAY @ 4:00 pm Pacific It's the Boze Noze Show! I am changing plans and moving the interview with Scott to a later date so we can cover the fire situation here in Oregon. The one in 100-year east wind event unfortunately lived up to the warnings and is causing tragedy on a scale we have not seen here in Oregon since the 1930's. The big fire in Lane County along the McKenzie River valley is now at 104,000 acres and zero percent contained and over 3,000 homes have been evacuated. Stories are starting to come in of nearly the entire town of Blue River being lost and other homes and businesses destroyed. Worse yet, the fire moved so fast that officials believe there was loss of life but have been unable to access the areas to confirm any. Cell phone towers were burned so communication is near impossible in the steep hilly terrain. Fire fighting resources are stretched so thin as to be almost non-existent compared to the size of the fires. Air quality in our area is off the scale unhealthy but i fell fortunate that is the only problem I am personally facing. The only good news is that the weather forecast is calling for diminishing winds over the next several days and air quality is supposed to improve by Thursday evening. If you don't want to talk about these topics or if you do, give me a call! The Boze Noze Show is live at 4:00 pm Pacific on Wednesdays. What is more iconic than to be fly fishing for trout from a custom Wood Drift Boat? In this episode we are talking with the owner of Hayes Custom Wood Boats located in Springfield Oregon the gateway to the McKenzie River. The unofficial home of the Drift Boat is actually Springfield Oregon where back in the 30's & 40's craftsmen were modifying wooden dories to handle better in the turbulent waters of the McKenzie River ... i.e. the name McKenzie River Boat. These boats became so popular that an entire industry was built following the early design of these boats. Today , not only are Drift Boats made of wood but are also crafted from aluminium and composite materials. Jayson is a true craftsman and artist when it comes to designing and building wood drift boats. Many guides and Sportsmen use Jayson boats because of their classic look, strength and durability. If you are interested in finding out more about Wooden Drift Boats and Hayes Custom Wood Boats go to Jaysons Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/hayescustomboats/
Kevin Vallely was travelling with his family at the McKenzie River, when a lone wolf suddenly approached their tent. Surprised and afraid, Kevin fired shots at the wolf to make it go away. After a few shots, the wolf did go away, leaving his family unscathed. The surprise encounter with the wolf left them a frightful impression, and they questioned whether to stop their adventure or not. They ultimately decided to continue on their journey. They recognized why that wolf acted the way it did, and through that process, brought experience and empowerment to their family. Because of that experience, they have learned the importance of pushing through and becoming stronger for it.

Jim Martin has been fishing Oregon coastal and inland waters since he was 7 years old, which means he has 50+ years of or accumulated fishing experience, fishing tales, jokes and stories to share. Jim takes his job very seriously and wants to make every trip and fun experience for all. Jim is well respected on the river by both fishermen and guides as one of the most knowledgeable anglers on the river. He was the first guide in Oregon to be sponsored by Cabela's and is also associated with Simms, Yetti and a number of other sporting goods companies. Primarily Jim fishes from his Willie Driftboat because it can get into waters that hold fish that power boats can not get into. His boat is equipped with all the latest gear and tackle including heaters for those chilly mornings. Jim also provides all his clients with raingear, the last thing Jim wants to have is someone cold and wet in the boat. Double Barrel Ale—is the trailblazing flagship beer that started it all for us back in 1996. Partially fermented in our patented Firestone Union oak-‐barrel brewing system, DBA quickly took the Central Coast by storm and set the pace for future beers to come. Today, DBA is regarded as a California classic, and stands as an iconic tribute to traditional cask-‐fermented English ales. Pale malts create a smooth middle with ribbons of caramel, English toffee and toasted oak." Ben's Guest Beer: Everybody's Brewing - White Salmon, WA Country Boy IPA, 6.2% ABV, 80 IBU "Dry, Clean and crisp with great citrus character. This beer is made for the hop lover. Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops provide a wonderful aroma and flavor. Golden in color with grapefruit and lemongrass notes in the finish." Knopp's Guest Beer: Ninkasi Brewing Co. - Eugene, OR Pilsner Cold Fermented Lager, 4.7% ABV, 30 IBU "A drop of rain at the top of the Cascades takes seven years to filter down into the McKenzie River and arrive at our brewery. It takes another 52 days to brew a batch of Pilsner. It’s a tedious job, but one sip of this sweet and light, crisp and complex Pils and you’ll know why it’s worth the wait." Explore Sahalie and Koosah Falls in Oregon: Podcast Show Notes Welcome to Experiences You Should Have, your how-to guide for amazing experiences. I’m your host Gail and today we are venturing into the Oregon wilderness to Sahalie and Koosah falls. Why You Should See Sahalie & Koosah Falls What I love about these waterfalls is that they are very accessible and you can get to them right off of the highway and they are stunning. If you pull off the road into the Sahalie waterfall parking lot, you will see there is a ramp (or stairs) that will take you to see the falls within a minute of walking. The ramp is also wheelchair accessible in the summer and early fall months. You’ll soon be staring at Sahalie falls with is about 100 feet tall. There’s a fun trick you can do with your eyes which is follow the water in the waterfall from top to bottom. Do this with your eyes at least 8-10 times in a row, then look off to the land to the left of the falls and you’ll start to see the land move. It’s called the Waterfall Illusion that allows you to see movement or motion where there isn’t motion. The Amazing Waterfall Trail that Connects Sahalie and Koosah Falls What’s really special about these waterfalls is the trail that connects the two. This trail is not wheelchair friendly and there are lots dirt stairs without railing, so keep that in mind if you have limited mobility. The trail is short, but along the trail, I have seen the bluest water I have ever seen. I think the blue water on this trail is even more beautiful than Crater Lake (which is definitely a must see location you should add to your list). What’s really special about these waterfalls is the trail that connects the two. This trail is not wheelchair friendly and there are many dirt stairs without a railing, so keep that in mind if you have limited mobility. There were areas on the trail where I could stand and gaze at the blue water below me and an instant calmness took over. Science even backs up that seeing blue water puts us in a meditative state that can make us have less anxiety, feel more happiness, and creativity. Explore Koosah Falls If you keep on going down the trail a half mile down you will find Koosah falls. Koosah falls is about 70 feet high and is known as a block fall because it descends from a wide breadth of a stream. Sahalie above it is a segmented waterfall because it diverges into 2 or 3 parts as it falls. How to Continue on the Waterfall Loop You can head up the way you came and make the entire a hike 1-mile total. However, if you’d like to spend a long day here, you can hike a full loop which is 2.6 miles long with 400-foot elevation gains. In order to do the loop, park at Sahalie falls, then walk left down the path to Koosah falls, downstream. To stay on the loop, keep right at all junctions after Koosah falls. After .4 miles you will find a gravel ride near Carmen Resevoir. Follow the road for about 150 yards until you see a trail sign and take that path. After 100 yards, turn right onto the McKenzie River trail which heads upstream past Koosah then Sahalie falls. When you get to the footbridge, cross over it, then turn right for .4 miles then you will end up at the Sahalie falls parking lot. I promise it will be a memorable hike and is a place I love to bring guests to when they visit Bend, Oregon. Look for Oregon Wildlife, the Pacific Harlequin Duck When you’re on the trail, keep an eye out for Oregon’s Pacific Harlequin duck, Oregon’s only anadromous duck. Take note that the Pacific Harlequin is the only duck in the world that lives in the sea and in the mountains (Nwf). This is a Free Experience! Also, take note that is completely free to park and hike around Sahalie and Koosah Falls. There is a bathroom that is ADA friendly at Sahalie falls, but there aren’t other facilities. Make sure you bring good walking shoes, a hiking stick, your camera, and snacks.

The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble gives two world premiere performances of James Miley’s newest work “Watershed Suite.” This six-movement piece is inspired by distinctive bodies of water in the Oregon landscape, from the Tamolitch Pool to Oaks Bottom, capturing the spirit of each through music. James Miley joins PJCE Executive Director Douglas Detrick for a conversation about the piece taped at Sellwood Riverside Park, on the banks of the Willamette River. Learn more at pjce.org/watershed. Episode Transcript [Doug] Welcome to Beyond Category. I’m Douglas Detrick. Head to pjce.org/watershed to learn more about this new piece and the performances in August, 2018. And stay tuned for the release of Trio Untold, with James Miley on piano and keyboards, Mike Nord guitar and electronics, and Ryan Biesack on drums. It’s the thirty-third release on PJCE Records, and it drops this September. Here’s the episode. [ambient tape: “I hear water”] ? [James] This is James Miley, I’m a composer/pianist. [Doug] Meeting near a waterway seemed appropriate. We are down along the Willamette River, this is Sellwood Riverfront Park. We’re looking at the Sellwood Bridge, listening to waves from a really noisy boat that just went by a little while ago. I’m doing two projects with PJCE this summer. First is a trio recording that’s going to be out in September with Mike Nord and Ryan Biesack, and that’s called Trio Untold. It’s all freely improvised music in the moment. And the second is a new piece for the ensemble and that’s called the Watershed Suite. Each section is inspired by a waterway here in Oregon. And I’m using watershed, the term, fairly loosely. I settled on it mostly because of the connection to the idea of a drainage basin, a large area that a river gives identity to. And, the concept of shedding, as musicians. [Doug] This is a bit of a musician’s joke. If you hear a musician say they need to “shed” a particular piece of music, that means they need to practice it. Shed is short for woodshed, which is where a musician would go, as the story goes, to practice away from an audience. [James] I wanted to write a piece about the Tamolitch Pool, the Blue Pool, down near Eugene up off the McKenzie River. Which is an extraordinary place. If you haven’t gone, you need to check it out. It’s a spot where the river goes under ground then bubbles up in this intensely deep blue color that doesn’t seem real at all. I wasn’t prepared when I saw it. I thought “oh it’ll be some water, and it’s blue, and it will be pretty” but it’s really really wild. It’s, I don’t know, thiry-ish feet deep, and you can see all the way down to the bottom, just a really deep, kind of intelligent kind of blue. I had all these sketches, all these ideas, and I just couldn’t come up with the thing that was working for me to elicit some sense of that place and how it makes me feel. In the process of doing this, we were editing the trio disc and all of this improvise music that we just kind of made up in the moment, and there’s a piece on there that really speaks to this place. So I went back into that and used that material to write a new large ensemble piece. Static is not the right word. It feels very serene. All the way through it feels like it’s got this flat sheen, there’s a feeling that you’re looking at something very deep but it never burbles to the surface. Which made me think of that pool, where you stand and you look at it and if you jumped in you wouldn’t be able to swim to the bottom of it. It looks closer than it is, but nothing is quite what it seems. The water is the connecting point but each one has a specific kind of sensibility to it. What I’ve always loved about Oaks Bottom is that you can get lost in there in a way after this crazy day in a big city. You can find yourself on a path in the middle of these wetlands, staring at a great blue heron, and then realize I’m sitting in the middle of this amazing place and I’m ten minutes from home. So, it’s the most urban of the settings, yet it has these qualities that it can transport you to a different place. [Doug] Finding inspiration in bodies of water is fitting for James Miley’s music. He crafts melodies with an amazing rhythmic lightness. The music dynamic and dazzling on the surface, but there’s always movement and depth underpinning it. He holds a doctorate in music from the University of Oregon, and currently is Assistant Professor of Music at Willamette University in Salem. He was born in California, but his studies and creative pursuits have taken him to Nevada, Virginia, Michigan, Arizona, Texas and abroad to Hong Kong and Kathmandu. He’s a master of composing for jazz ensemble, and that comes from a huge range of experience, including professional jazz bands, classical ensembles, and years spent teaching jazz in colleges and high schools all over the country. So it means something when he says about Portland and the Montavilla Jazz Festival that... [James] There’s more talent here per capita than any other place that I’ve lived. Even in Los Angeles, there are amazing musicians but there’s also ten million people and you drive two and a half hours between gigs. I think an opportunity to showcase what we have here and connect with the community on a grass roots level is fantastic. [Doug] If you’re in Eugene, come hear the ensemble play “Watershed Suite” at Roaring Rapids on Thursday, August 16th at 7 pm, free admission! If you’re in Portland, we play Saturday, August 18th at 5:30 at the Montavilla Jazz Festival. Go to pjce.org/watershed to get reserved or VIP stageside tickets. General Admission tickets are available at the door only, but your reserved seating ticket gets you General Admission access to see the whole festival. Learn more about rest of the festival lineup at montavillajazzfest.com. Have you heard the ensemble play a few times? Have you listened to some recordings on PJCE Records? Maybe you’re a subscriber to this podcast? If you enjoy this music and media, and you want to see us make more of it in the future, I encourage you to become a PJCE Sustainer. You can make a tax-deductible donation of as little as $60/year, or $5 per month, and get access to discounts on concert tickets and PJCE Records releases, and invitations to Sustainers-only events. We’re offering a $10 discount for Montavilla Jazz Festival reserved seating tickets, and you’ll be invited to a special reception with James Miley in September, available only to PJCE Sustainers. You’re going to have a million questions running through your mind after you hear his incredible music. Come to the reception and you can ask him all of them. Head on over to pjce.org/sustain to become a PJCE Sustainer and we’ll send you all the details. This has been Beyond Category, I’m Douglas Detrick, Executive Director and Podcaster-in-Chief of the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble. Thanks for listening.
