Brain-Based Therapy NW specializes in the treatment of Anorexia (Atypical, Restricting, Binge/Purge) using Temperament Based Treatment with Supports (TBT-S). The TBT-S approach to treatment emphasizes treating from the inside out, starting with addressing the biology before moving on to managing symptoms. The goal of this treatment is not only to alleviate symptoms but also to provide a deeper understanding of the illness and actions for both Clients and Supports to address its components. Dr. Crotty received her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Fuller School of Professional Psychology and her doctorate in clinical psychology, emphasizing family and pediatrics. She has worked with those struggling with eating disorders since 2009 and has been training with Dr. Laura Hill in TBT-S since 2017. Outside of work, Krista enjoys spending time with her family, skiing with her sons, traveling, reading, and finding joy in the little things.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Krista Crotty, founder of Brain Based Therapy Northwest, about an exciting new eating disorder therapy called Temperament Based Treatment with Supports (TBTS). Dr. Crotty has extensive experience working in eating disorder treatment and was motivated to transition to TBTS because of its focus on understanding the underlying brain biology of eating disorders. I find this so powerful because it removes blame and guilt for having an eating disorder. We discussed how TBTS identifies common personality traits in people with eating disorders, especially anorexia, and how to shift their expression from destructive to productive. Dr. Crotty gave examples like perfectionism and persistence which are neutral traits but can be expressed in helpful or harmful ways. A key part of TBTS is bringing in supports, like family and friends, to help create a treatment plan tailored to the individual. The intensive program is 5 full days of psychoeducation, experientials, and skills practice with supports. This provides so much hope! Dr. Crotty explained how TBTS gives clients control and responsibility over their own recovery journey. I see tremendous potential to pair TBTS with coaching to further empower recovery. We also discussed how understanding the biological reasons why certain behaviours occur takes away guilt and enables practical solutions, like using alarms to remember to eat. If you want to learn more about this revolutionary treatment, visit Dr. Crotty's website BrainBasedTherapyNorthwest.com or read the book "Temperament Based Therapy with Supports". It was an honour to learn about this innovative approach giving people all over the world hope in eating disorder recovery through understanding their unique brain-based traits.
