Welcome to this week's episode, all about the "Girls Trip" I went on with Jen Ripple from DUN Magazine and Outdoor Girl Cheryl Smith. It was a whirlwind of a trip, but so incredibly worth it! I drove two hours from Nashville up to Land Between the Lakes to meet up with Jen on an early Monday morning. We loaded up the truck and continued our trek north 8.5 hours to Port Clinton, OH. In retrospect, we wondered why we didn't just fly up, but I'm glad we didn't. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time! We arrived at Bay's Edge Resort around 5pm. The first stop was over at the Bait Shop to check in to our luxurious townhome accommodations. While we were there we met acclaimed walleye spinner blade maker Tommy Harris and our Charter Guide Captain Mark Cahlik. Tommy and Mark showed us the fish in the amazing pond right there at the resort. None of us have seen bluegill so big our lives! We went out for a great dinner at a local Mexican restaurant, and after visiting for a bit back at our beautiful townhome, we went to bed early. We had an exciting day of perch and smallmouth fishing ahead on Tuesday! You'll hear all about Day 2 in this episode. An amazing lady named Em fished with us and joined us for this episode. She has a long history in fishing. She used to fish the tournament scene as part of the Bassin' Gals trail. She was so much fun to get to know and fish with! When we got back in we did a little fishing in the pond, recorded this episode, and then went to dinner at a local winery. The food was SO GOOD! Soooo even though I mentioned it in the episode, you don't get to hear about Day 3 where we went trolling for walleye, just yet...BUT stay tuned for a video which will be coming out VERY soon. I'll post it in the episode notes for this show on The Woman Angler & Adventurer website as soon as it is ready! Trust me, it's worth the wait!!! ENJOY! Jen Ripple is the Editor-in-Chief of DUN Magazine, a fly fishing magazine written by women and for women. After writing a women’s column for another magazine, Jen realized there wasn’t yet a women-focused publication in the fly fishing world and decided to start one of her own. While DUN is by no means meant to exclude men (and Jen mentions how many of her readers actually are men), it does offer a different perspective of the fly fishing experience. With both digital and print material (which comes in the form of a high-quality, booklike magazine), DUN is a great escape for readers looking to try something a little different from the typical fly fishing magazine selection. In this episode, we talk about Jen’s background, her experience starting DUN, and the effects, both positive and negative, that social media has had on the industry. Jen is the best female fly fisherwoman in the world today and we don't think it is a stretch to claim that Jen Ripple is possible the best fly fisher in the world, without reservation. Lake Babcock is not a big lake by any means. It's a mere 300 acres. In fact, you're not allowed to use a gas-powered motor. Captain Debbie Hanson had an electric trolling motor and oars to get us from one tried and true spot to the next. The bite was tough. A cold snap had just moved through. Even the gators were lethargic. We were using my favorite baits that I use back home in Nashville on Percy Priest when the bite is tough- a Yamamoto Senko and the trusty Ned Rig. (Quick side note about the Senko I learned from Jen Ripple of DUN Magazine one night over dinner...it was inspired by an ink pen! Mr. Yamamoto looked at this pen, thought this would make a great bait and used it as the mold! Look at the Senko next time- it looks just like an ink pen!). Our last stop was a spot we'd tried earlier where Debbie knew a couple big bass like to hang out. It was near one of the floating docks. You had to get the bait in just the right spot...after a couple of casts BOOM! I was lucky enough to catch a beautiful Redear Sunfish a.k.a. Shell Cracker on our trip! I haven't caught one of those since I was fishing Marrowbone Lake in Joelton, TN years ago! They're beautiful fish, and this was a good-sized one too. Hard fighter. Super exciting! Unfortunately, we were on a bit of a timeline due to the lunch date so we had to end our fishing adventure a bit short in order to have enough time to record our conversation for the show and still make it in time for our lunch date all the way in Punta Gorda...ha! Captain Debbie was extremely accommodating and we had a great conversation that I think you all are going to really enjoy! "19 Days, 3,796 Miles, 5 States, starting in Nashville and heading to Homosassa, FL then all along the coast to New Orleans, LA with the goal to fish and meet up with as many women as we can along the way." That was the premise of the 2019 edition of Rip and Hopper's Adventure, the Redfish Roadie Road Trip- Pretty. Darn. Epic. As you may recall waaaay back on Episode 16 of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast Angie Scott interviewed Jen Ripple from DUN Magazine and Heather Hodson from United Women on the Fly at Fly South in Nashville as they were about to embark on their first Rip and Hopper's Adventure. (By-the-way, that episode won 1st place at the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association 2019 Excellence in Craft Awards in the Radio/Podcast category!) Well, fast forward a year later, Angie Scott had the honor of tagging along on the 2nd incarnation of the trip! Now you're invited to come along too, as we travel in the minivan on our way to New Orleans, LA looking back over the Florida portion of the adventure. Lots of fun was had, many memories were made and loads of fish were caught! We discuss the Community Casting Events that were held along the way and tying in well with our "Mansplaining" episode last week, the importance of being self-aware when instructing and introducing new people to the sport. Join us for this episode as well as Episode 86, the bonus episode where we get to chat with a few of the amazing ladies who joined up with is from the Stuart, FL leg of the journey. Jen Ripple is the owner and editor-in-chief of Dun Magazine, an international women’s fly fishing publication—the first of its kind. I met Jen about six years ago when she was just getting Dun off the ground. I found her perspective on the fishing industry refreshing, so I was excited when our paths crossed and we could sit down to record a conversation. In this episode of Anchored, Jen and I discuss what it’s like to pick up fly fishing later in life, the risks of starting the industry’s first female-only magazine, empowerment, dating people who don’t fish, plus we take a closer look at the fishing-in-bikinis controversy.
Episode 247 catches up with Heather Hodson, Jen Ripple and a minivan full of friends and family as they drive across Florida and Louisiana. The ladies are in search of Redfish and will be sharing the down low on fly fishing to pretty much anyone they encounter, even Florida Man. Be sure to follow along on social media. Heather is a dedicated fly angler, educator / instructor and extremely passionate about the sport and conservation of fly fishing. Heather is also the founder of @unitedwomenonthefly which is an organization empowering woman in fly fishing. In this episode we hear how Heather got her passion started for fly fishing in the early days, as well as the struggles she faced during those days as a new fly fisher. Heather also mentions how she Got real connection with the women in the local Washington fly fishing scene that ultimately became the foundation for united women on the fly. Heather shares her goals with the brand and what the future of the united women on the fly is hoping to achieve, also how anyone who’s interested in this can reach out to heather and look at becoming a part of this organization. Heather talks about her crazy and wild times with friend and cohost Jen Ripple of Dun Magazine in which together they embark on road trips across the Southern USA in search of red fish, beer, and good times (of course there is so much more to this than just that). Like how heather helped test the new women’s Simms waders, start casting with double handers first then try a single hand and of course what’s next for her as a female fly fishing Icon.
