The lure body can swing up and down within the head weight thus standing up on the bottom like a feeding baitfish. If you have fished since you were two years old, you’re probably a master. But, if you’re still fishing at age 10 and mastering the skills of a master, you might be a prodigy. Meet Deighan, also known as Lil D, a young lady who has been fishing since she was two years old using spin equipment. That didn’t last long though. She quickly left that discipline to develop her fly fishing skills with her Dad and dog Ranger by her side. She hasn’t looked back since. Lil D talked with us at FGF about how she started, what she enjoys about fly fishing, and how she can share her love of the sport with her friends. Listening to Lil D talk about all her achievements she’s had by the age of 10 is really inspiring. The future for young ladies in this sport is very bright, especially when Lil D is leading the way. Wanting to return the favor, her account became a source of inspiration and encouragement to other girls and women to enjoy fly fishing. D is determined to reach 50/50 on the water and has been sharing what she has learned with many other girls her age. Seeking her casting instructor certification she is the youngest person to pass the bronze level casting skills challenge from Fly Fishers International. D has tied flies at several shops and shows from NY to CO and fishes almost exclusively flies she tied. She shares her love of tying flies through live online tutorials and in person occasionally competing in iron fly contests against adults. She is an active member of Texas Women Fly Fishers hoping to supplement their many on the water outings with fly tying sessions.
