In this episode we WadeOutThere with Steve Schmidt, from Salt Lake City, UT. Steve moved to Utah to pursue his love of skiing while attending college. He quickly became a die hard fly fisherman, spending almost every free day on the Provo River, skiing in the evenings, and spending his summers on some of the west's most storied fisheries. Steve's hunger to progress and learn fostered relationships with fly fishing mentors that not only helped him as a fisherman, but also opened the doors to a life and career in fly fishing. Steve opened his fly shop, Western Rivers Fly Fisher, in 1986 and although he's recently retired, you can still find him in the shop helping others progress on their own fly fishing journeys. We discuss dry fly tactics and why doing the hard work matters in all aspects of fly fishing.Learn More:Western Rivers Flyfisher.comREAD: WADEOUTTHERE | What Makes a Good Day's FishingREAD: WADEOUTTHERE | Embrace the DriveREAD: WADEOUTTHERE | Fish One RiverREAD: WADEOUTTHERE | Leveraging Angles in Fly FishingVisit TacticalFlyFisher.com and use Promo Code: wade15 at checkout for 15% off you next tactical gear purchase.Newsletter Sign-UpNew Collector DiscountWadeOutThere SubscribersGet 10% off your first order.View Jason's ArtworkThanks for listening.VR- Jason

Rivers and creeks throughout our state are channeling snowmelt from the surrounding mountains, which increases the volume and speed of most waterways. Of particular concern is the Provo River, which is currently running ten times faster than usual levels. The Provo Police Department has issued a warning to use caution near the river for the next month due to the high levels and speed. Dave and Debbie speak with Travis Hancock, Ranger with the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation.
Police say a 14 year old fell into the water at Riverside Park in Provo this afternoon. The teen is reportedly out of the Provo River water now, and is doing ok. Over the weekend, two other people died in fast moving streams. Janna-Lee Holland with Provo Police joined Jeff Caplan live to discuss the incident and river safety.
Over the weekend, a 12 year old boy lost his life after falling into the Provo River near Bridal Veil Falls. Dave and Debbie discuss the latest details and speak with Sergeant Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff's Office about the dangers of Bridal Veil Falls and if there is more concern with the danger in this area than previous years.

Shawn was born in Sheridan Wyoming. His love of bikes started early, he even won trophies racing BMX in elementary school. When he was 12 they moved to Holladay where Shawn went to Oly Jr & graduated from Olympus High. Shawn has always been active, playing many sports like football and basketball. Believe it or not, he had to be an X when he played tackle football in junior high. He went to Univ of Wyoming for a semester, and realized the sheltered Sheridan boy was not prepared for all that Laramie had to offer. He then went to the U for a quarter, spent two years in North Carolina, and then graduated from the U. Shawn currently lives in Cottonwood Heights with his wife Emily; who is amazing, glorious, kind, thoughtful, and patient, along with their 3 boys. Em's family ran the Deseret News 10k one summer, then the Provo River half marathon, and Shawn's love for endurance was born, as well as a dive into nutrition. He ran 13 marathons before switching to cycling. He has always had a method to his madness, whether it be getting faster or stronger, what he does has a purpose. At certain times of the year, Shawn could have up to 6 jobs going on at one time. He's currently working on a masters in Sport Analytics from Ole Miss, and looking to make a career transition to data analytics. So make sure you have your brown rice and beatles, and prepare to be enlightened by Shawn's crazy mind. From Kirby, “Shawn has been in the finance industry for 10 plus years, but has a love for statistics. When Shawn isn't crunching numbers for FIS, he is running the statistics reporting for University of Utah sports programs as well as for the NFL Las Vegas Raiders. Fun facts, Shawn is a vegetarian and loves eating cactus. Because Shawn eats mostly plants, producing more gas, which you'll get to enjoy on group rides. There is little to no draft riding behind Shawn, perfect air foil. Shawn's mom, Jane, favorite friend is David Kirby. She loves a man with a mustache. True story.”
In this episode we WadeOutThere with Thi Nguyen, from Salt Lake City, Utah. As long as Thi can remember he has had a love of all kinds of games. He is the author of the book, Games: Agency as Art. This episode is a deep dive into the philosophy of fly fishing. In this episode, we talk with Deidre Beck from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Deidre works in the Division of Drinking Water as an Environmental Scientist. This episode was recorded on January 25th, 2023, and concludes our three-part series on water here in Utah. You can listen to all of our episodes, including the water series, wherever you find your podcast. Deidre explains how her division has primacy over the Utah Safe Drinking Water Act.Her division is also tasked with conducting regular sanitary surveys for every public water system in Utah - ensuring these systems meet water quality standardsShe explains how Utah obtains much of its drinking water via surface water - and how important the Provo River is to drinking water along the Wasatch Front.Deidre also explains the concept of ridgeline authority, which gives some of the larger cities (such as Salt Lake City) the right to establish ordinances in areas outside of their jurisdiction. This ridgeline authority allows them to protect public drinking water in these zones. We also talk a bit about the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and how the Division of Drinking Water created a map to show disadvantaged areas, so the water suppliers in these areas can apply for hardship funding to improve the water systems there. So, take a moment to sit back, and enjoy the show.Additional ResourcesDEQ's Interactive MapHardship Funding Criteria for Utah Public Water Systems mapDrinking Water Sampling Results in Utah

December 15th, 1995 was a typical winter night in Utah. Cold. In fact, bitter cold, especially in the resort town of Midway which is nestled in the middle of the Wasatch Mountain Range. But that night a young 17 yr old girl, Krystal Beslanowitch, was scared enough to jump out of a vehicle where she and a man were having sex, and run hundreds of meters to escape him. She was wearing nothing but a pair of socks. Sadly, the man caught up to her and brutally beat her to death with several river rocks, then left her bloody body laying unceremoniously by the banks of the Provo River. A farmer and his son found the body the next morning. 911 was called and the responding deputy, Todd Bonner, began the investigation that would span 18 years. Deputy Bonner eventually became Sheriff Bonner, and despite a change in responsibilities he never forgot Krystal, nor did he ever give up. Eventually technologies were developed that enabled the investigators to not only identify those that were the last to be with Krystal, but also the man who gripped the rocks that ended her life. In this episode we take to you the crime scene, hear from Sheriff Bonner and ADA McKay King - who helped prosecute the murderer Joseph Simpson - and give you a first hand accounting of the crime. When Editor Sue Collins, of several Lifestyle Publications, was first introduced to fly fishing, it was to gain knowledge before writing an article. That experience was so motivating that she picked up a fly rod and has not looked back since. Now Sue, a fellow member of Georgia Women’s Fly Fishers is out on the water as much as she can. Today we talk with Sue about what she has learned. Guest: Sue Collins Website: www.lifestylepubs.com Social Media: Instagram Bio: Sue Collins is an Atlanta-based magazine editor and travel writer. She hails from Michigan and graduated from University of Oregon, later around the world with her husband who was a sailmaker. Together, they have three grown children (and a beautiful 1-year old grandson) and have lived in for Atlanta 10 years. Sue studied marine biology, until she realized chemistry and numbers were not her strength. She’s always loved being on and under the water, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling and swimming where ever her journey took her. Her first time with a fly rod was on the Provo River outside Park City, Utah. Since then, she’s fished north Georgia’s creeks and rivers and looks forward to fishing during the summer in northern Michigan where her family has spent summers for four generations. Sue joined Georgia Women Fly Fishers last year, got her first fly rod for Christmas and practices casting in the downtown Atlanta park near her house and tries to fish whenever she can. This is Fly Girl Fish episode 046, first aired on 07/22/2020.

We live in an age of polemics. Choices are presented as mutually exclusive and we are given little time to listen. You are either secular or religious. You either believe in the exclusive truth of your own religion or you believe that truth is everywhere—or nowhere. The battle over truth rages on. But what if truth were a child? What if we pursued a relationship with the truth and each other in more caring ways? Dr. George Handley joins us in this episode to talk about his book, If Truth Were a Child. If you're a church leader who is looking to connect better with the flock, or if you're one of the sheep who feels undernourished, George Handley has important things to share with you. About the Guest George B. Handley teaches interdisciplinary humanities at Brigham Young University, where he also serves as the associate director of the Faculty Center. He received his BA from Stanford University and his MA and PhD in comparative literature at UC-Berkeley. His scholarly publications and creative writing focus on the intersection between religion, literature, and the environment. His books include the memoir Home Waters: A Year of Recompenses on the Provo River, the novel American Fork, and two collections of essays in the Living Faith series entitled If Truth Were a Child and The Hope of Nature. Maxwell Institute Conversations are special episodes of the Maxwell Institute Podcast, hosted by Terryl Givens and created in collaboration with Faith Matters Foundation. You can also watch this episode on YouTube. In the beginning, God said “let there be light,” and there was light. God created this extraordinary world, the scriptures tell us, through the power of his word. It makes all the more sense, then, that a professor of comparative arts and letters like George Handley would spend so much time thinking about and enjoying creation. In this conversation, LDS author and Humanities professor George Handley speaks with Terryl Givens about connecting with the divine through nature; about being a good steward of the earth; about the tragic death of his brother and the history of a river. He's consecrated his life and talents to discovering and sharing what is good and beautiful. About the Guest George Handley is the associate dean in Brigham Young University's College of Humanities. He is the author of several books, including Home Waters: A Year of Recompenses on the Provo River and the brand new novel, American Fork.
