Bob Reece is a passionate fly-fishing guide and coach who transitioned from a career in education to pursue his lifelong love for the sport. Growing up in Nebraska, Bob was introduced to fly fishing by his father during trips to Wyoming, sparking a passion that would later define his professional journey. After drifting away from fishing due to sports and college football, he rediscovered it post-graduation and began guiding clients in Colorado and Wyoming while still teaching. As he became increasingly disengaged from teaching, Bob made the courageous decision to follow his passion full-time, emphasizing the importance of planning and addressing fears associated with such a significant change. His experiences with successful guiding companies laid a strong foundation for his own business, where he values client relationships and logistical management. Bob's journey has taken him internationally, including notable fishing trips to South America, where he explores unique fishing environments and engages with diverse clientele. He combines his guiding work with coaching and counseling, aiming to provide emotional growth through outdoor activities like fishing. Bob is committed to making the counseling process approachable and engaging, envisioning retreats that connect therapeutic practices with the joy of fishing.

In this episode, I share a phone call I had from a "closet" fan of Salt Strong who happens to be a fishing guide. Plus, get to hear the details behind the AE Fish Finder Method. Tight lines and enjoy.
I take guilty pleasure in hearing horror stories from guides about their worst clients or other crazy things that happen on the river. Orvis-Endorsed Guide of the Year for 2019 Chip Swanson [41:00] is a great storyteller and has had some wild and funny incidents on the river over the years. I think everyone will enjoy these stories but just a warning—although not R-rated, some of his stories mention sensitive body parts so if your kids listen to podcasts with you, you may want to preview them first. Nothing very raunchy but you have been warned! Rated PG-13. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and tips including: I fish a lake that is stocked with rainbows and has a small tributary stream. Do you think the rainbows will run up into it? Do you have any tips for being stealthy on a trout stream other than not stepping right into the water? Can I use a sinking Salmon Poly Leader for trout? When do you extend the butt section of your leader? I am using a switch rod for distance in warm water fishing and have tried all kinds of lines but am not happy with my casting. Do you have any tips? Any tips or tricks on how to travel; with waders and wading boots? I am concerned with my wet wading boots. Can trout smell us and should I worry about it? Do Zero-weight fly rods exist and what are they used for? A tip from a listener about learning to cast at all angles to your body without moving your feet. I fished a cold Colorado tailwater in the morning and a local angler told me I was on the water too early. Why? All the hoppers I see have green, brown, or black wings. So why do we put white wings on many of our hopper patterns?

Send us a Text Message. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale and the Captain of the Montana Outdoor Radio Show sat down with Fort Peck Fishing Guide, Scott Collinsworth. Scott and his wife Jess are also the owners of Fort Peck Marina on the incredible Fort Peck Reservoir. One of the many topics that Rigger and the Captain talked with Scott about is the idea of someone that is not familiar with such a massive lake like Fort Peck, using a Fishing Guide like Scott to learn where to find amd catch all the different species of fish that the lake has to offer. They talked all about how to find the “Big Uns” like, well, none other than the King of Fort Peck Reservoir the Mighty Chinook Salmon! Catching 20 plus pounders is not unusual but as Scott explained it can be a real grind for even the most experienced fishermen that has been fishing Fort Peck for years. Thus, Rigger's idea of hiring a guide like Scott if you are a newcomer to the 134 mile long lake. The Big Blackjaws were not all the boys discussed, however. Scott also gave out all kinds of great advice and described some of his most successful techniques for finding and catching HUGE Walleyes, some VERY FEISTY Smallmouth Bass, big Pike and Massive Lake Trout! When you listen to this Podcast it will be like getting a personal seminar from one of the top guides in all of Montana. Better yet why not go out fishing with Scott one of these days? Another thing you will learn about when you listen to the Podcast is a TON about Fort Peck Marina, the campground, tackle shop and the wonderful restaurant and bar. Make sure you listen to the entire podcast because there is fantastic advice that you will get from jigging techniques, tackle suggestions, when to go after the big Salmon, and much, much more. As Rigger put it; “Scott is an incredible teacher, he explains things so dang well and his ideas and overall approach to becoming a better fishermen are fascinating. I can't wait to get out on the water and try what I have learned!! Lookout Blackjaws I'm coming for ya!!”Links:For more information about Fort Peck Marina, the Campground, Restaurant, Tackle Shop and the Guide Service just click here. If you have questions for Scott, just call and leave a message for him at (406) 526-3442 and he will call you back after he gets done guiding some lucky folks through another great day out on Fort Peck Reservoir. In this conversation, Mike Pease shares his insights on fly fishing techniques and guidance. He explains the lob cast and set technique, emphasizing the importance of using a wrist flick to flip the line like flipping a pancake. He also discusses the dance with the fish and the angler's role in leading the fish during the fight. The importance of the arch in the cast and leading the drift are highlighted as key elements for successful nymph fishing. Mike also advises aspiring guides to seek guidance from experienced professionals and consider attending guide school. Takeaways Mastering the lob cast and set technique is crucial for successful fly fishing. During the fight with a fish, the angler is in charge and must lead the fish. The arch in the cast and leading the drift are essential for effective nymph fishing. Aspiring guides should seek advice from experienced professionals and consider attending guide school. Getting from one location to another. There are many reasons to make sure your vehicle always has a Road Map or Road Atlas. First reasons are simple, even though it seems there is cellphone or mobile phone service everywhere, in reality there is not. If you are traveling and your carrier goes down, your phone potentially could not navigate correctly. Also, there are many areas when on the back roads or touring the backcountry where there is no cell service and limited satellite reach too. Having that road map can result in you safely finding your destination. Youth and road maps; love this combination. Encourage you to use road maps as improving cognitive skills in kids, children, youth as well as the older generation. Cognitive skills are ones to always try to keep sharp! Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/574 Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors We're thrilled to welcome Stuart Jordan and Ben Roberson, the brains behind the Guide Book Co. mobile app. In a world where finding the perfect fly fishing guide can be as challenging as landing the catch of the day, their app serves as a beacon, connecting passionate anglers with experienced guides. Today, they're here to spill the secrets on not just elevating your fly fishing game to new heights but also on how their innovative platform can streamline your journey to finding the ideal guide. So, tune in, as we dive into the essentials of matching with the right guide and making every trip to the water count! Episode Chapters with Ben Roberson and Stuart Jordan on Finding a Great Fly Fishing Guide 2:17 - With roots deeply embedded in the outdoor traditions of Kentucky, Stuart shares how his love for nature was ignited during a childhood hunting trip with his father, under the spectacular display of one of the century's biggest meteor showers. 4:31 - Growing up in Kentucky as well, Ben's early experiences with deer hunting and fishing in local lakes and ponds laid the foundation for his lifelong passion. Ben's journey from exploring fishing as a hobby to guiding others and eventually co-founding the Guide Book Co. app reflects his deep-seated love for fishing and his desire to connect others with the beauty and thrill of the sport. 6:12 - Ben shares how Kentucky's central location is a goldmine for anglers, offering easy road trips to a dozen or more states packed with top-notch fly fishing spots. Ben also highlights the Cumberland River's lesser-known trout fishery as a gem, with its trophy-sized catches just waiting to be discovered. 7:42 - Ben, a guide himself, shares some real talk about the struggles he faced—like missing bookings while out on the river, dealing with payment hassles, and the final straw, not having a place for a client to leave a review. These bumps led him and Stuart to brainstorm a fix for these common guide woes. 11:44 - Ben and Stuart tell us what sets Guide Book Co. apart. One of which is they're not about hefty fees or underhanded tactics; instead, they reinvest a portion of their earnings into marketing to help guides gain visibility. This approach not only supports guides in managing the nitty-gritty of business but also connects them with clients eager for their next outdoor adventure, ensuring a win-win for everyone involved. 16:15 - They share their approach to selecting guides for their platform. Their selection process is personal and thorough, ensuring each guide's profile is a true reflection of their expertise and passion. This hands-on approach guarantees that Guide Book's community of guides is top-notch, providing anglers with unforgettable fishing experiences. 28:15 - We dove into how they tackle online reviews and guide selection. Unlike the typical star-rating system, Guide Book opts for a more nuanced approach, asking clients to answer specific questions about their experience. They emphasize the importance of good guides rising to the top based on merit, not payment for better visibility. 36:55 - Ben highlights some of Kentucky's prime fishing spots, emphasizing the Cumberland River and notable lakes like Green River Lake and Lake Cumberland, famous for bass, striper, catfish, and the prized bluegill. For those seeking more information on these waters, Ben recommends the Bluegrass Trout Unlimited chapter, the Department of Fish and Wildlife website, and Kentucky Afield's YouTube channel. Additionally, he suggests the On Water app for exploring waterways, public lands, and access points, making it easier for anglers to discover new fishing spots in Kentucky. 40:18 - Stuart and Ben share some must-do Kentucky experiences, blending the state's renowned bourbon culture with its rich fly fishing opportunities. Ben adds that Kentucky is home to all the big names in bourbon, like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace, emphasizing that true bourbon comes from Kentucky. 42:15 - They discuss their vision for expanding their guide service across the United States, highlighting current hotspots in Florida, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeast, thanks to a partnership with Southern Culture on the Fly. They're keen on offering nationwide coverage and welcome feedback from fly anglers everywhere. 44:20 - We talk about the etiquette of tipping fishing guides, and Ben shares his insights, emphasizing the significance of gratuities in the guiding industry. Guide Book has integrated a feature for tipping in its trip completion process, offering suggested amounts and the convenience of tipping directly through the platform. 47:00 - Stuart reveals his current favorite for smallmouth bass fishing in Kentucky: the crawfish pattern, which he recommends for its effectiveness. Ben, on the other hand, leans towards trout fishing on the Cumberland River, praising the frenchie as his go-to fly due to its versatility and appeal to rainbow trout. 49:30 - We go into a candid discussion on personal vices and overcoming them. 53:02 - On their road trips, Ben and Stuart have unique preferences for keeping themselves engaged. McDonald's hopes that this new concept will streamline their operations and provide more efficient dining experiences. We hear often about worker shortages and more use of AI as well as seeing McDonald's locations are already using kiosks in the United States, now the question is when will this become the new “norm” in the USA? Stay prepared before going with a large group and learn the new technology out now at not just McDonalds but many other restaurants too. More and more restaurants are no longer offering printed menus, and are instead moving towards a “Scan QR Code” that then directs you to a menu on the phone. Don't be caught off guard, stay in the know! FEATURE HOW TO MAKE TRAVEL MEMORIES Guest: Johnnie Candle; Pro Angler, Guide & Speaker. Learn more about this Pro Angler & Fishing Guide or to book here: https://johnniecandle.com/ https://www.facebook.com/JohnnieCandleProfessionalAngler/ Hear how taking the time to stop "Smell the Roses" as the often said, has more relevance especially as a journey through life. If planning a long awaited vacation, have an idea of the sites to see but make sure to reserve time for impromptu stops along the adventure. See that roadside stand selling coconuts, PULL OVER and TRY! That is also part of the great memory making for you and your companions! Often it's the "little things", the moments that didn't go perfect on that long awaited trip that become the most reflected, laughed and cherished. Plus toss the fishing pole along too or if in a new area, reach out and spend the money to try "new waters" to you. Too often it happens that the road you're traveling may very well be the ONLY time you travel it. So best to take it all in and then fondly remember those cherished memories! I started fishing at an early while growing up on the windswept rock of Iceland. My parents often joke that they didn't get to see much of me during the warmer months, as any small stream or ditch would captivate my attention for weeks on end. When I was six years old, I received a fly rod for Christmas and started tying flies with materials from pulled apart shoelaces and pillows, and the addiction we all know as fly fishing officially took hold. When my mom and I moved to California in 2005, I started bringing a 6-piece rod to school everyday since it fit in my backpack, and I would take the bus and explore the warm water ponds and freshwater creeks in the area. This was my first introduction to the fisheries of the Central Coast. I started guiding during the summer of 2014, in the West Rangá, one of Iceland's most productive salmon rivers, and home to the most beautiful brown trout in the world. I managed to work my way into the guiding community by starting as a dishwasher when I was 17, and fishing during my off time, and it didn't take long for my intense enthusiasm to pay off as I started filling in for other guides and in no time had a summer schedule filled with clients. Spending my fall, winter and spring on the Central Coast of California has allowed me to fish over 300 days a year for most of my adult life, and I have explored much of what this area has to offer, and now guide here for bass, carp, surf perch and striped bass. This area has some awesome fishing in some of the most scenic areas anywhere, with the most consistently mild weather you can ask for. Whether you want to stalk carp in ankle deep water on the freshwater flats, or cast little sand crab imitations into the surf for perch, the Central Coast offers a year round fishery that should not be taken for granted, and should be utilized. I love sharing my love for the sport, the philosophy behind fly fishing, and creating awesome memories on the water. I am a Sage, Redington, and RIO pro guide, as well as a Fishpond, Simms, and Firehole hooks pro guide and fly tier. I work with Central Coast Fly Fishing fly shop in Carmel, California, and I am an American Carp Society Official Guide. Look forward to seeing you out on the water! Learn more about your ad choices. My guest Spencer Seim (rhymes with “time”) lives a life devoted to fishing, environmental issues, and serving people. Since he was 8 years old, Spencer has been obsessed with fly fishing. Spencer has been guiding northern New Mexico and southern Colorado for eighteen years. Eight years ago, he founded ZiaFly, a guide service that focuses on a personalized fishing experience with access to some of the best trout fisheries in the Rockies. Spencer is also very well-versed in fly tying. He's tied flies commercially, for art, for competitions and of course, for his guided trips. Spencer's flies have been featured in The Drake magazine, New York Times, Kirk W. Johnson's book The Feather Thief, and America's Favorite Flies. Spencer has been mentioned in This American Life, Smithsonian Magazine, and Outside Magazine. The Takeaway Life typically moves along at a fast pace for most of us. By the end of the day, activities we've been engaged in are often a murky blur in our rearview mirror. What, then, might be the payoff in slowing down, observing, and reading the environmental water, say, like a fly fisherman? And how do we give ourselves the ability to hold onto and make sense of those moments of pure serendipity? As you listen What is it that drew Spencer to the water and fly fishing? What life lessons can we take away from the fly fisherman's need to observe and immerse him or herself in the trout's environment? How did Spencer get involved in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of almost 300 rare bird skins that could be used to tie salmon flies? What is the underlying story of The Feather Thief? How does Kirk Johnson's decision to write the story rest on one of those rare moments of serendipity in life? How does Spencer distinguish himself as a guide? How does he demonstrate differentiated servant leadership? How does he view guiding as being part of a team? Misguided Fishing welcomes Capt Harry Merkalis. The guy has created a niche on the Outer Banks of NC. He has proven that guiding fly fishers to skinny water species such as reds and specks can be done in one of the windiest places on the East Coast. Harry guides trips out of motorized kayaks, on foot wading, and out of his flats skiff. One of the most interesting and entertaining guests we have had on Misguided Fishing. Harry is going hard at the age of 65 and is proving that an old dog can teach new tricks.
Episode 149 Details How did you wrap up summer, say goodbye, and Hello to Fall? For many, us included as trees have started to turn, and archery season opens, feel that Labor Day weekend is - The Start To Days of Fall. Tigger & BEC decided to do a “Day RoadTrip” on that Sunday of the long holiday weekend. As let's be real, on this outfit there's no such thing as a "long weekend". These crazy cats took off with the truck loaded with kayaks, and fishing gear and traveled their “own backyard” meaning, stayed within state lines. Driving around a massive lake the two know very well, came upon not one but TWO bays new to them and had vacant beaches. Instead of unloading the gear, Tigger & BEC on the LAST hot day of summer jumped in the lake, enjoying just playing and swimming while soaking up the sun. SPOTLIGHT FAN MAIL We received lots of “Fan Mail” after last week's show when we talked about the recent backcountry expedition done by experienced outdoorsmen who had 3 pack horses tumble 80 feet and thankfully survive! We heard lots of comments, Want to give a shoutout to one listener, Scott Middleton from Alberta, CA - He shared photos of his Tennessee Walkers that they use on rougher terrain. Another listener texted in that he appreciated us sharing about transporting feed across state lines for horses (or any livestock). This individual was stopped and had feed checked for noxious weeds prior to being allowed to enter the national forest. Before heading to the backcountry including the national forests or grasslands, if you are crossing state lines it is highly recommended to contact your local veterinarians as Coggins tests, health certificates or even brand releases may be required as well as contact all states you Game and Fish departments you will be traveling through to your final destination. NEWS PADDLEBOARD FISHING Experienced Connecticut fisherman Eddie Carroll went viral in the fishing world when while fishing off his 12-foot paddleboard. What caused the excitement, off the coast of Madison in the Long Island Sound he hooked a large catch, so big that it began dragging him and the paddleboard. After fighting this monster fish for over an hour, he reeled up to the paddleboard a massive brown shark. Thinking smartly so folks would believe his “Catch Of The Day”, or catch of the year in our book… Eddie Carroll was able to turn on his phone to start recording as evidence to prove the catch. It was figured to roughly be an 8-foot Brown Shark, in which this fisherman did cut the line for the next lucky angler. We've got the video - Head to TheBendShow.com to watch this INCREDIBLE catch of a lifetime! ANIMALS DON'T STOP FOR PASSPORT CONTROL According to NPR - Apparently Wild or not, animals don't stop at passport control, including the reindeer that graze on the border of Norway and Russia. Forty-two crossed into Russia, and now the Norwegian government has to pay Russia for the loss of grassland - more than $4,000 per reindeer. The animals are just going where the grass takes them, I guess. So now Norway is repairing an old fence there to try to rein in their deer… like that pun.. but on a serious note… Norwegian officials, according to Fox 5 NY, state the work of building and fixing the border fence is a challenge, as the workers have to stay on the Norwegian side of the border "AT ALL TIMES" during construction, which as you can imagine is making the work extra demanding. As for example; If a worker crossed into Russian territory, without a Russian visa, that would amount to illegal entry. These reindeer have truly stirred the pot or shaken up a hornets' nest as Russia has sent two compensation claims thus far. One claim is for $ 4,700 USD per reindeer that crossed into Russia to graze in a nature reserve. In addition, the second claim is asking for a lump sum of nearly $4.4 million in total for the days the animals grazed in the nature reserve park, which consists mostly of lakes, rivers, forests, and marshland. The returned reindeer belonged and were herded by the Indigenous Sami people in central and Arctic Norway. However, upon return, the animals have since been slaughtered out of fear that they may wander back to Russia. Watch your stores as they have released a new pretzel beer named “Wheelhaus Dunkel”. The beer is said to be made with brioche-style soft pretzels and salt. This has BEC extremely curious as brioche-style buns for example typically have a sweeter flavor, so could this be a sweet & salty like beer? If you find it, let us know your thoughts! FYI - those dreaming of being in Munich, Germany for the OFFICIAL Oktoberfest, you best get your tickets booked. This years festival runs September 16th - October 3rd, 2023. BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 155: Montana Fishing Guide and Writer Chris Dombrowski Chris Dombrowski is a professional fishing guide of over two decades on the rivers of Montana, an acclaimed poet and the author of Body of Water: A Sage, A Seeker, and the World's Most Alluring Fish, which is about, among many other things, the pursuit of bonefish in the Bahamas. Chris' latest book is The River You Touch: Making a Life on Moving Water, which manages to be a deeply honest memoir, a celebration of the joys and terrors of family, and a love letter to the landscape and rivers of the American West, all at the same time. Join Hal and Chris for an intense conversation about fishing, life and literature, recorded live at the 2023 BHA North American Rendezvous.
