Ever wanted to get into anime but didn't know where to start? Gateway to Anime is a podcast where anime megafans Sam and Charlotte guide normy Brett through the wild and wonderful world of anime, one of the fastest growing mediums in the world.

With the rise of AI and so much of our lives online, our relationship with technology is ever changing. But anime has been exploring these ideas for decades. As machines and technology shaped our world, anime reflected it back. Whether its giant mecha wars in space or philosophical questions about our identity in the digital age, anime has given us an incredible legacy of stories about technology, robots and mecha. Thanks to everyone who joined us for this very special live recording and special thanks to the team at ACMI for making it happen! Learn more at acmi.net.au
Monster isn't at the top of any anime lists. Whether this is due to its unconventional storytelling or darker cerebral tone , it's these very same elements that set Monster apart from more popular anime as a rare masterpiece that doesn't get enough attention. A mature crime thriller from one of the best mangaka's of all time (Naoki Urasawa), Monster offers great storytelling in a grounded setting. This makes it a different kind of gateway anime, appealing to fans of true crime and thriller stories who may otherwise never give anime a shot. Despite being renowned as a masterpiece, Monster is often overlooked by anime fans. Returning guest Gerald Lillywhite is one of them, who joins the discussion fresh after finishing the series to offer his perspective as a writer.
Put your lab coat on and join us for some experimenting with spooky science in anime... which is seemingly always awful?

Music brings people together. With anime, this takes on a whole new aspect. Rather than the power systems and fighting styles popularised in shonen anime, these series use music to tell their story. Whether it's a band coming together or a solo artist finding their voice, characters in music anime explore coming of age and finding community in a way that's uniquely relatable to real life.
In this episode of Gateway to Anime we talk about (in our opinion) underrated anime, that have either been somewhat forgotten through the passage of time, or simply not given the credit they deserve amongst the community. With an arbitrary criteria implemented (from MAL ranking and popularity scores) the gang go through shows they think are underrated and deserve more credit. You might just find your next favorite hidden gem!
One of the biggest Gateway Anime shows of all time has ended! We discuss its huge cultural impact and how it helped anime breach further into the mainstream.

We also talk through the connection between power systems and martial arts as well as which power system we'd most like to be apart of.

Somewhere along the line we segue into talking about Boruto for way longer than any of us anticipated, plus Seamus shares some of his anime hot-takes.

We cover the classics such as Slam Dunk, Haikyu!! and Hajime No Ippo as well as some absolute wild cards of the genre including Sk8 the Infinity and Birdie Wing Golf Girls' Story.
What anime are you nostalgic for? This week the team take a trip down memory lane to discuss the anime that makes them most nostalgic. Is nostalgia the death of art? Do we need another remake/reboot of our childhood favourites? Will we ever be able to recreate the highs of Rock Lee dropping his weights? Join the debate and be ready to defend your favourite nostalgic anime!
This week the gang gets together to talk all things mystery with the wide genre of detective anime. Sam talks through the history of detective fiction in Japan and the decidedly Sci-Fi flavor that tends to accompany these kinds of stories in Japanese storytelling. Sam and Charlie then go over some old ground with a couple of classic shows from our earliest episodes in Death Note and Psycho pass (we figured we've improved a bit since we first spoke about those shows in our early days). Graeme talks through Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and how influential it was on modern detective/Sci-Fi animanga. We also learn about the third highest selling manga of all time in Detective Conan, which turned out to be a huge blind spot in all our knowledge.
