News 32:34: Once Crunchyroll announced their changes to their store back in July, it was only a matter of time before they went the route of completely eliminating all sorts of print books from their store, short of it being an exclusive; Cool Japan was once a thing, and both Justin and Helen had to really think about the impact this initiative from the Japanese government really made following news that reportedly it will not have much funds in 2027, thus effectively ending it. 36:25: sooncha will switch publication of Yang Can’t Live Alone from Square Enix to a new publisher in Japan, which seems to have had a major impact on its English release; The Manga Mirai service will shut down later this year, which prompted both hosts to wonder how long this platform lasted (not very long); After 13 years, NHN Japan Corporation’s free manga app Comico will end service in January 2027; We will once again have a new imprint in the English publishing market very soon, and it’s a somewhat familiar name. 45:51: Coco Uzuki's got health issues and needs to adjust her schedule, so her Fall in Love, You False Angels manga is slated to return in Kodansha's Dessert magazine in November; Shiwasu Hoshikawa’s Bungo Stray Dogs STORM BRINGER manga will go on a long-term hiatus due to Hoshikawa’s health; and Shō Aimoto lost her brother a few weeks ago, so Kemono Jihen will go on hiatus for a bit. 47:15: Comic book and manga letterer Dave Lanphear passed away at 58 a few weeks ago; legendary voice actor Peter Cullen died at 85, according to his family to TMZ, peacefully on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, which led to a number of tributes and remembrance, not just of him as Optimus Prime, but for his role in growing Toonami thanks to all the promos he did. Weird News 1:35:17: Helen discusses the crazy situation that occurred involving Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou’s The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: Erha He Ta De Bai Mao Shizun, where the novel got announced to be a manga drawn by long-time BL artist Ayano Yamane and then days later got suspended for things the artist brought up involving anti-Chinese and anti-Korean sentiments on social media, meaning it’s now added to the pile of works not adapted into another medium. 1:41:26: So there is a proposed theme park project involving France and Saudi Arabia that was announced, and it was reported that a theme park is expected to be based on the Dragon Ball franchise — the problem? According to a French newspaper, the project has not received approval from the rights holders, so we got a current case of he said, she said! And someone is wrong. 1:46:17: Not anime, but all the same, Please Save My Earth is returning after decades to get a live-action work on Prime; the Maria Holic manga is back, getting a sequel after 12 years; TMS Anime announced that Baki Gaiden: Retsu Kaioh wa Isekai Tensei Shitemo Ikkō ni Kamawan is receiving a TV anime adaptation…for some reason! 1:50:20: We got some One Piece and Detective Conan collabs happening thanks to Universal Japan; Krispy Kreme collaborating with Pokémon; and yes, you can support Masako Nozawa turning 90 by buying a few things of hers, including a baseball hat depicting her from youth! Samurai Dhampir - Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust What an incredible find! This week Mr. Chavez & I return to the world of Japanese Anime with this discussion of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's 2000 Dark Vampire Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Coming fifteen years after Toyoo Ashida's Vampire Hunter D, what Kawajiri creates is breathtaking. Simply put, Japanese Anime expands the boundaries and expectations of "Traditional" American Animation. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Kawajiri's tale of a half human/half vampire hired to track and rescue a wealthy man's kidnapped daughter. In a story that mirrors - to a degree - Richard Brooks's The Professionals, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust takes a simple, and rather familiar, story and emboldens it with some of the most beautiful animation ever committed to film. Our October horror shows roll on as Byrd, Tom, and Kevin are joined by Chris Marti (musician alias "Cosmic Monster" and co-writer of The Author vs. the Werewolf) to discuss the fantasy/horror of Wicked City!  Based on a series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi (Vampire Hunter D), Wicked City is about the rift between humanity and a secret society of interdimensional demons.  We start with 1987's cult classic anime film from Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust) and move onto 1992's live action version produced in Hong Kong (co-produced by Toho).  Both adaptations are bonkers, so we have a lot to discuss including the anime's problematic sexual politics, phallic tentacle creatures, spider women, handover era Hong Kong cinema, sentient pinball machines, horny elevator monsters, and more.  But first, we discuss the recent passing of legendary Showa era monster maker Keizo Murase.  Relax and enjoy the conversation.

      This week we take a look at three movies about creatures of the night and their hijinks over three continents and centuries of the masquerade.      In 1932 Austria, Sigmund Freud hires a painter, Viktor, to illustrate his monstrous dreams and takes on a new patient, Count Geza Von Kösznöm, who's problem is he hates his wife, who is obsessed with being able to see herself, and still longs for his centuries dead ex-girlfriend. To help immediately with the first problem, Freud recommends the Count hire Viktor. Complications arise due to Viktor's girlfriend, Lucy, looking exactly like the long lost love. Will Viktor be able to paint a portrait to satisfy the Countess? Will Lucy have herself overwritten by the Count's ancient memories? Can Sigmund get a good night's sleep? An Austrian horror comedy from David Rüehm, Therapy for a Vampire.     Charlotte, a shy, emotionally traumatized, and understandably repressed college freshman arrives to start her new life with a fencing scholarship. Tragically, she is also being targeted by a centuries old half vampire, who needs her blood to lifting his blood sucking curse and finds herself the target of the least likable and tedious girl on campus. Can Charlette find a place for her self on the team or will her bully push her out with the sheer power of her generic sarcasm? Will the vampire find their cure? Can we, as a planet, finally move beyond stupid concepts like virginity that are just excuses for men to fetishize and shame women? The 21st work from prolific Canadian director Carl Bessai and remake of a well loved 90s Skinemax classic, Embrace of the Vampire.     For centuries vampires ruled the world but now they are dying out and hunted by the long repressed remains of humanity. When Baron Meier Link abducts Charlotte, the daughter of a wealthy family, her father hires a dhampir named D to find her and rescue her dead or alive. D isn't the only hunter on the trail as the family has also hired the Marcus Brothers team to track their lost lamb. Soon all three groups clash in bloody conflicts to hold on to the girl. The second adaption of Kikuchi Hideyuki's massive novel franchise (55 entries at this moment) with gorgeous animation and fluid action from equally prolific studio Madhouse, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.     All that and Tyler makes a perfectly reasonable mistake, Kevin gets deep in his views, and Dave wonders if these memory problems should be concerning.
