The acclaimed Japanese anime series Star Blazers, or Space Battleship Yamato, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, so today I welcomed my friend Tim Eldred to the show to talk about the series and its many spinoffs and reboots. Tim is a comic and animation artist who produced a Star Blazers comic book and is the premiere expert in and historian for the series. It's a welcome break from the existential dread of our politics. You can follow Tim's work at OurStarBlazers.com and The Art Vault. If you love animation and comics, chances are you're familiar with his incredible work. Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto's live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto's work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. On this episode, join Dennis, Ed, Garret, Kate, and Karen as we take our first dive into one of anime's tougher fandoms to get into: Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We're starting with 1988's pilot OVA/first movie, My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. Two warring factions with their respective brilliant strategists who are still trying to earn the respect of their commanding officers, it's our first look at Yang Wen-Li and Reinhard von Müsel (who later becomes Reinhard von Lohengramm). We make some obvious comparisons to the Gundam, Macross, and Star Blazers franchises, appreciating the classical music after watching Princess Tutu, figuring out if these military tactics are actually brilliant or not, so much laserdisc talk, and too many mentions of skirts. So whether you're taking 5 ships or 8,000 ships for a diversion, we've got you covered. SDCC and many other big cons aren't for comics creators and fans anymore. Transformers toy history, and Bob Budiansky and Jim Shooter's vital contributions to Transformers lore. In terms of any skills or abilities, he is completely self-taught…though he does NOT recommend that path for most would-be artists. In the early 1970's, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. From there Doug went off in many other directions as a freelancer: STARBLAZERS (for Comico), PLASTIC MAN and MANHUNTER (for DC Comics), TOXIC AVENGER and WHAT THE--?! (for Marvel), ROGER RABBIT (for Disney Comics), TALES OF THE TMNT (for Mirage Comics), and STUPID (for Image Comics), among others. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all.   Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations' from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. Since 2013, Doug has been teaching animation-related classes as a part-time professor at Columbia College of the Arts in Chicago because, even though he never graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle, his Emmy honor counts for a professorship at Columbia.   Follow our Hosts Rich Davis Former co-host of the clowns of cosplay podcast & Cesar Romero enthusiast https://www.facebook.com/bagelbar https://www.instagram.com/velvetjoker2021/   Leo Pond Owner and Producer of The Dorkening Podcast Network https://www.facebook.com/leopond https://www.instagram.com/leo.pond/   Drew Mollo https://www.facebook.com/drew.mollo/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/drew-mollo https://screenrant.com/author/drew-mollo https://www.instagram.com/ghostbusterman1984 Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/splash-pages-the-comic-book-cl/75683b71-3ec1-4878-bf7d-b50d1a9ea796 This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

As we often like to discuss things that have gone away from our pop culture, some things haven't gone away. Things like breakfast cereals and collectibles are still in full force. Back in the day, Saturday mornings used to be special because before we had 24 hour cartoon channels, we could only get our new cartoons on Saturday mornings on one of the 3 networks that we had. With the advent of cable and satellite TV, cartoons, and even early morning comedies or scary films would be shown all over the dial on emerging 24/7 niche channels, and Saturday mornings stopped being special. Well, that's all over! Saturday mornings are special again, because on today's show, entertainer, actor, singer, storyteller, magician, producer, director, and author John Pyka joins us today as we not only talk about his Saturday morning show, Back of the Cereal Box, but also his numerous other shows and endeavors! We had a highly entertaining conversation about collectibles, Saturday morning TV, the dangers of toxic fandom and more! Join us for a great conversation!! TV in the 70's had its share of Sci-Fi even before Star Wars. Some of it may have been cheesy and kitschy, but it was loads of fun! Jay and Shua find a treasure trove of Disco-ey science fiction and don their sparkly bell bottoms on Enjoy Stuff   Did you grow up in the 70's? If so, you probably watched more Sci-Fi on TV than you remember. If you didn't, you gotta listen to us explain what inspired the great stuff we have today!    News -A cool dad make his kid a homemade Star Tours in their garage! -Get ready for a bunch of GameBoy games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online -The Matrix 4 gets a mind-blowing trailer What we're Enjoying Star Trek: Lower Decks has beamed its way into Shua's heart. This series may be a parody, but it honors all the Trek shows with references and care. Check it out on Paramount+. Jay has been watching some Jackie Chan flicks. Supercop was the third in a series of Chan films that showcased his stunt work and karate ability. Oh wait, they all did that... Enjoy TV Sci-Fi has been around for generations. And it really gathered some steam after Star Wars came out in 1977. But there certainly was some interesting stuff on television in the early 70's. Saturday mornings had some great kid-centered cartoons like Sealab 2020, but Sid and Marty Krofft had some live action classics like Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and the wacky Far Out Space Nuts.    Ark II and Jason of Star Command used a slightly bigger budget to enhance their effects, but they had their share of kitsch too. As kids, we didn't care. We loved the imaginative adventures.    In syndication, we got some anime like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. Star Trek the Animated Series kept the Trek Dream alive.    Prime time TV kept trying to figure out exactly what Sci-Fi was with early showings such as Land of the Giants, Space: 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. But as George Lucas unleashed his vision upon the world, the later 70's showed us Sci-Fi juxtaposed in just about every genre of TV entertainment.    Comedies like Mork and Mindy and Quark kept us laughing. Hour long cinematic stories like Battlestar Galactica, Logan's Run, and Buck Rogers experimented with episodic drama mixed with cheesy 70's humor and music.   There were so many different shows to choose from! And it helped keep us involved and inspired to create all we have today.    Do you think 70's Sci-Fi is groovy? Let us know in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

It's time for a brand new episode of The Flickcast. The pop culture podcast about stuff nerds love. This week we've got Episode 444: The Flickcast For All Time. Always. On this episode Chris and Joe jump into discussions about some new and recurring topics, as they do every week. Some of these include the early Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers), the latest Steven Soderbergh film No Sudden Move, the director's other films such as Outta Sight and The Limey, upcoming Marvel series such as What If? and the season finale of the Marvel/Disney+ series Loki. In addition to the above, you can also expect the usual "more" and several tangents. Although, this episode only features 15.87% more tangents than usual, so at least the number is trending down. That's not bad. We're still trying.Change doesn't happen overnight.  If you like the show, though, please consider rating or reviewing it on Apple Podcasts, or your podcast app of choice. Every rating or review helps. And if you're really feeling it, consider supporting the show on Patreon. That would be cool.  Thanks for listening!
