In terms of any skills or abilities, he is completely self-taught…though he does NOT recommend that path for most would-be artists. In the early 1970's, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. From there Doug went off in many other directions as a freelancer: STARBLAZERS (for Comico), PLASTIC MAN and MANHUNTER (for DC Comics), TOXIC AVENGER and WHAT THE--?! (for Marvel), ROGER RABBIT (for Disney Comics), TALES OF THE TMNT (for Mirage Comics), and STUPID (for Image Comics), among others. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all.   Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations' from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. In the early 1970's, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. From there Doug went off in many other directions as a freelancer: STARBLAZERS (for Comico), PLASTIC MAN and MANHUNTER (for DC Comics), TOXIC AVENGER and WHAT THE--?! (for Marvel), ROGER RABBIT (for Disney Comics), TALES OF THE TMNT (for Mirage Comics), and STUPID (for Image Comics), among others. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all.   Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations' from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. Since 2013, Doug has been teaching animation-related classes as a part-time professor at Columbia College of the Arts in Chicago because, even though he never graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle, his Emmy honor counts for a professorship at Columbia. Supercop was the third in a series of Chan films that showcased his stunt work and karate ability. Oh wait, they all did that... Enjoy TV Sci-Fi has been around for generations. And it really gathered some steam after Star Wars came out in 1977. But there certainly was some interesting stuff on television in the early 70's. Saturday mornings had some great kid-centered cartoons like Sealab 2020, but Sid and Marty Krofft had some live action classics like Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and the wacky Far Out Space Nuts.    Ark II and Jason of Star Command used a slightly bigger budget to enhance their effects, but they had their share of kitsch too. As kids, we didn't care. We loved the imaginative adventures.    In syndication, we got some anime like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. Star Trek the Animated Series kept the Trek Dream alive.    Prime time TV kept trying to figure out exactly what Sci-Fi was with early showings such as Land of the Giants, Space: 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. But as George Lucas unleashed his vision upon the world, the later 70's showed us Sci-Fi juxtaposed in just about every genre of TV entertainment.    Comedies like Mork and Mindy and Quark kept us laughing. Hour long cinematic stories like Battlestar Galactica, Logan's Run, and Buck Rogers experimented with episodic drama mixed with cheesy 70's humor and music.   There were so many different shows to choose from! David Brown, a friend from Charlotte, North Carolina, joins Tales from the Fandom for its 17th episode. We start off with how we met each other through Dungeons and Dragons and delve into how he got into roleplaying games as a kid with 1st edition D&D and West End Game Star Wars.  He tells about how a setting for D&D, Eberron, brought him back into gaming and the games he currently plays.
