We continue GODZILLApril with the latest MonsterVerse film GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (2024)! As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. So join us in this extra long special episode as we go over our favorite viewings of this year, as well as some shout-outs and discussions on other films that came out in 2024. Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go. Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)

Buckle up for a wild ride this week! We're diving headfirst into the latest movies and a hot new Netflix show. First up, I'll be cracking open Beverly Hills Cop 4, sharing my thoughts on whether Axel Foley can still bring the heat. Then, we'll get colossal with a review of Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire. Did this monster mash deliver epic throwdowns or leave me feeling flat? Finally, we'll shift gears and discuss the buzzworthy Netflix series, Supercell. Is it a streaming sensation or a dud? Finally my thoughts on President Biden's interview with George Stephanopoulos. This week is packed! We talk A Quiet Place: Day One, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, The Boys, Federer: The Last Twelve Days, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Acolyte, and My Policeman. The show kicks off with Laurens rave review of A Quiet Place: Day One. It's not just "more of the same" which makes it exciting. Lupita Nyong'o and Joesph Quinn do a great job, and then there's that damn cat... Next up, Kevin talks about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. This one actually IS "more of the same" but in the best way possible. Will it win any awards? No. But if you are a fan of the original film, this one hits all the right notes. Except Eddie's signature laugh. Who knows why...? Bringing Andrew into the fold, finally, Kevin and he discuss The Boys lateest episode and some of the sensation around it. All in all, a solid episode moving along a solid season! Lauren then swings things away from the raunchy to the very classy with Federer: The Last Twelve Days. It's a quick and wonderful documentary about the end of Roger's tennis career and the discussion quickly shows us just how much Andrew loves sports. (Hint: he does not love sports) So as to not let things get too mature, Kevin swings us back to Godzilla x King: The New Empire. Let's be real - this is NOT Godzilla Minus One. This is a wild and crazy action adventure with a minimal nonsensical plot and it is absolutely a ton of fun. this is Titans kicks ass and taking names ad shouldn't be anything less. Staying with sci-fi for a minute, Kevin and Andrew discuss the latest episode of The Acolyte. Their opinions differ slightly, but the episode is still a solid one and they both are looking forward to the final episodes. Lauren closes out the show with her review of My Policeman, a time hopping queer love story starring Harry Styles. She was hoping for something with the impact of Fellow Travelers but was sort of left wanting. Not a bad film by any stretch, but it was lacking that special something that could have made it a great film. As always, thank you for watching. Kevin Wright, vice president of production and development at Marvel Studios, has left the media giant to pursue producing his own original tv and film ideas. Notably, Wright was an executive producer for the MCU streaming series Loki, which was actually his pitch to Kevin Feige and series star Tom Hiddleston. Wright originally started at Marvel as a development assistant. Happy Hunger Games! At least certainly for fans of the franchise as author Suzanne Collins announced a new installment in her Hunger Games saga called Sunrise on the Reaping, which will release March 18, 2025. The book is another prequel like The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Alongside this announcement, Lionsgate shared that a film adaptation of the new book is already greenlit and currently set to premiere on November 20, 2026. At a panel for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim at the Annecy Animation Festival, 20 minutes of the film was shown to the audience. The footage was applauded by the crowd and by Andy Serkis, who was running the panel. Serkis also revealed at the event that Miranda Otto, who played Eowyn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy will serve as the story's narrator and that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh were executive producers on the film, which hits theaters in December. Maybe franchise fever still exists! One would think so after seeing that Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's latest team up, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, crushed its opening weekend projections, opening at $104.6 million globally. The film punished Furiosa's opening with a 58% higher box office. Abbott Elementary actor Tyler James Williams asked Anthony Mackie about the challenges he faced transitioning Sam Wilson from films to television. Paraphrasing, Mackie said “Bringing Falcon to that series, there was so much time to fill. It's literally so much story and so much exposition and so much character that it's a daunting task. Luckily it was just a great experience with great leadership.” Legendary has tapped Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical outing in the Monsterverse franchise following March's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Sputore most recently helmed the 2019 sci-fi movie I Am Mother. Kristen Stewart will make her TV series-starring debut in The Challenger, a limited series in which she'll play Sally Ride, the astronaut and physicist who became the first American woman to fly in space. Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Paramount's Star Trek Starfleet Academy as a recurring guest star role and as the season's central villain. Set in the same era as The Acolyte, the next adult novel of Phase III of The High Republic from Star Wars releases on June 11. Stars of 1998's cult classic Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, are in talks to star in a sequel. Entertainment Weekly claims to confirm that Taylor Swift will not be appearing as Dazzler in July's Deadpool & Wolverine. Peacemaker Season 2 cast Picard actress Sol Rodiguez and The Office actor David Denman. The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke announced that the show will end after its fifth season. The Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led Wonder Man series is rumored to be 10 episodes long. The Frasier revival on Paramount+ has added two Frasier alumni to the cast. Dan Butler, who played Bulldog, and Edward Hibbert, who played Gil Chesterton on the original show, will return to guest star in season two of the revival series. Zack Snyder's director's cuts of both Rebel Moon films will be released on Netflix on August 2nd. The rated R cuts also received new titles which are Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. Saturday Night Live actor Beck Bennett becomes the newest addition to the cast of James Gunn's Superman. Rumor has it Bennett will play a reporter of note in the movie. Last week Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald were also added to the cast and will also play reporters in The Daily Planet newsroom.
