In this all new expanded Boy episode released in tandem with our new U2 Origin Story episode, we pick up the story after U2 pulls off the big rouse at their now legendary gig at the National Stadium in Dublin that gets them signed to Island Records. We go over why they turn from Joy Division producer Martin Hannett and pivot to Steve Lillywhite to produce Boy. We cover Lillywhite's crucial contributions to the Boy sessions and go through all the tracks. We cover the controversy over the album artwork and themes of the record and the seminal moments of the band's first world tour. From the outside, everything appears copacetic, but inside, pressure from the Shalom Group starts to splinter the Lypton Village and the three Christians of U2 try and reconcile rock and roll and their faith.
In Part 2 of our interview with Steve Lillywhite, we wanted to explore some topics that may not have been as widely discussed as some of the ones we touched on in Part 1. Not only do we take a deeper dive into the last DMB record he has produced, Away From the World (2012), we also venture into the Phish waters and have Steve reminisce on his time producing Billy Breathes (1996) as well as their post-breakup comeback album Joy (2009). Incredibly insightful and unabashedly honest, Steve delivers some epic recollections and opinions that will certainly leave you yearning for more. Our time with Lillywhite concludes with an absolute can't miss "Rapid Fire" segment where we learn who would be sitting at Steve's dream dinner table, what project he is most proud of, and the band he'd most want to work with next. His answer shocked us! We cannot thank Steve enough for all of the fantastic music he has helped bring to our and millions of others' ears, for taking the time to speak with us and being so gracious throughout, and finally we really want to emphasive how wonderful he was to us. Thank you, Steve!
It was an absolute honor having DMB & music industry legend Steve Lillywhite join us live from "The Lillipad" for Convos on the Corner! This has truly been years in the making and because he has been a part of many interviews in his career, we wanted to make this one as fresh and unique as possible. In Part 1, we dive into how Steve got his start in music, what he's up to these days, and touch on some of the other bands he has worked with including The Rolling Stones, Phish, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, and of course U2 who he recently joined in Vegas to help prepare for their residency at The Sphere. We also discussed his incredible work with DMB on UTTAD, Crash, BTCS and the Lillywhite Sessions. Oh, and we actually had Steve listen to infamous MacHead and give us his reaction to hearing it again after all of these years, what it needed to have in order to have made the album, and the story behind its "lyrics". We hope you enjoy this enlightening convo with Steve - and be sure to come back next week for Part 2 where we discuss his works with Phish, the current band he'd want to produce, and an extended discussion about his potential final DMB record, Away From the World.
W jarasaseasongach czas na piosenkę świąteczną. Poszwędamy się po Nowym Jorku. I to w doborowym towarzystwie. Bajkę z nowego Jorku opowie nam ikona współczesnego folku, ba nawet punk folku, Shane MacGowan z zespołem The Pogues. Opowiem Wam dzisiaj o najpopularniejszej w XXI wieku na wyspach brytyjskich - można by rzec pastorałce, zresztą - sami to ocenicie. „Fairytale of New York”, bo o niej mowa do 2020 roku sprzedała się na wyspach w dwóch milionach czterystu tysiącach egzemplarzy i uzyskała poczwórną platynę. Na temat powstania Fairytale of New York krąży parę legend, my skupmy się na wersji Shane'a. „Fairytale of New York” powstał zatem jako rozmowa pary zmęczonych życiem, sfrustrowanych kochanków z sentymentem i jednocześnie rozgoryczeniem spoglądających na swoją przeszłość. Gdy słyszy starego włóczęgę śpiewającego irlandzką balladę „The Rare Old Mountain Dew” (piosenka o pędzeniu w górach irlandzkiego bimbru - poitin), zaczyna śnić o kobiecie swojego życia i zaczyna z nią słodko-gorzki dialog. W międzyczasie producentem Poguesów został Steve'a Lillywhite'a. Ten poprosił swoją żonę, Kirsty MacColl, o nagranie testowego wokalu, aby zespół mógł usłyszeć jak brzmi w duecie. Poguesi byli zachwceni jej wykonaniem, uznali że Kirsty musi wziąć udział w nagraniu. I wzięła. Sail Ho. Audycja zawiera utwór: "Fairytale of New York" w wykonaniu zespołu The Pogues i Kirsty McCall, słowa: Jem Finer, muzyka: Shane MacGowan @jarasaseasongi znajdziesz na facebooku i YouTube :-)

Sam and Charlie convinced long time friend and frequent guest Gerald to watch two of their favorite shows in all of anime. (One of) Sam's "undisputed kings of anime" the epic space opera Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Charlie's genre subverting "hard sell" Fruits Basket. While these shows both have fervent and dedicated followings and are renowned in the community, they aren't necessarily widely watched. Gerald brings his measured thoughts and opinions of these epic shows which leads to a deep dive of analytical discussion about what makes these shows so special.
Chris Lillywhite started racing when he was 14 years old. His first love was football. But he began to get into some trouble and his dad made the decision they were going to do something together so he bought them bikes. Shortly after getting a bike he began racing. In a two year span as a junior Lillywhite won 21 races and a national kilo championship on the track. From that kilo ride he made the national junior track team for G.B. From that point on Lillywhite's career began to snowball. Making the transition from juniors to seniors in the U.K. wasn't much of an issue for him. Crazy enough he didn't train much. Not because Lillywhite was lazy but because he held down a job while racing. So he was killing it racing purely on talent. He considered himself an all-around with a good sprint. Since he couldn't win to many stage races on GC Lillywhite says he focused on winning jerseys like best climber or sprinter. Some of his notable wins include the Milk Race in 1993, the British National Circuit Race Championships the same year to the Tom Simpson Memorial Road Race in 1994. Literally I can't name all of his wins because it would be long a prolific. Lillywhite doesn't think he fulfilled his talent. He says the money was so good in the U.K. racing crits he didn't see the need to leave and race on the continent. Let me make this clear...he got offers. Lillywhite's last season racing as a pro was 1999. He took a job working for the Linda McCartney Racing Team. He would eventually work with Team Wiggins. Currently he runs his own business and Lillywhite is still on the bike.

In today's technological age where a sea of information is available at our fingertips and differing opinions constantly echo in our ears, it can be challenging to get to the bottom of the truth of any subject - especially faith and religion. When hard questions arise that may challenge our testimony, how do we find answers that will satisfy both the mind and the heart? In this episode, Lorin "Moss" Lillywhite shares his unique experience deep diving into faith-affirming and anti-Mormon literature - initially with the intent to disprove the truthfulness of the gospel - and now as a means of deepening his conversion and helping others. Moss shares valuable insights how we too can find answers to hard questions and details the importance of allowing both the intellect and Spirit to play a key role in our conversion. He also shares some personal trials of faith that have deepened his testimony of the structure of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and our responsibility and opportunity to bear one another's burdens as disciples of Christ. In 2000, Dave Matthews Band was the biggest rock act in America. The group set out to record a fourth record, on the heels of its massive hit, 1998's Before These Crowded Streets. It was a doomed process. The album's sessions eventually leaked anyway—to widespread positive reviews. The band obviously and rightfully rejected this act of defiance and piracy. The record-that-wasn't maintains a stellar reputation by fans all these years later, flaws and all. It's become one of the most well-known aborted albums in popular American music history, in part because it happened near the birth of the Napster era. Twenty-two years later, the story of the infamous sessions is recounted by DMB's lead engineer, Steve Harris. Lillywhite himself will be featured in part two.

Meanwhile Charlotte lays into a show she has hated since 2014.

Huntly recorded an impressive away 5-2 over Clachnacuddin to move up to fifth. It was a first league win for Manager Allan Hale who admitted his team's attacking display was the main difference on the day. With ten goals conceded in their opening two games, Lillywhite's Manager Jordan MacDonald was unhappy with their defensive display.

San Francisco born producer, engineer, mixer, musician, and songwriter Eric Robinson's first job in the music business was given to him by legendary Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite. He never anticipated a short email to his hero would find him recording Trey Anastasio of Phish and watching Lillywhite mix U2 at the age of 19. Following his summer in Vermont and New York, Eric landed an internship at Royaltone Studios in LA. This quickly turned into a position as a runner, and not long after Eric was assisting on sessions for Barenaked Ladies, Ricky Martin, and Lifehouse with producers Ron Aniello, Mario Caldato and more. After 3 years at Royaltone, Eric left in 2005 to go freelance. In addition to recording, Eric was also getting busy as a sideman in 2006, playing guitar and keys for notable acts in the burgeoning Hotel Cafe scene such as Cary Brothers, Sara Bareilles, Joshua Radin and Jessie Baylin. This lead to international touring, television appearances and a live concert film with Sara Bareilles. On the studio side, Eric simultaneously struck up a working relationship with producer/songwriter Marshall Altman and the two had immediate success. The first album they worked on together was Kate Voegele’s debut for Interscope/MySpace Records. Eric played all the keyboards, most of the guitars, mandolin, accordion, and banjo on the record, as well as recording and mixing it. Kate’s record sold 250,000 copies in the US and the songs were licensed extensively on TV. Next up came Matt Nathanson’s album Some Mad Hope, which Eric recorded with Altman. The album spawned the double-platinum single, “Come On Get Higher.” Then came albums with Natasha Bedingfield, Trevor Hall, William Fitzsimmons, Walker Hayes, Rosi Golan, Bethany Dillon and Adema, spanning genres from pop to folk to country and metal. After establishing Marlay Studios in North Hollywood in 2010, Eric worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Sia, Michelle Branch, Natasha Bedingfield, The Milk Carton Kids, Carney, Aqualung, Dan Wilson, P!nk, Rachael Yamagata, Brooke Fraser, Switchfoot, and Boyd Tinsley from Dave Matthews Band. Along the way, Eric gained valuable experience working alongside hit producers such as Ryan Tedder, John Alagia, Dan Wilson and Charlie Peacock. In 2014, Eric was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year for his engineering work on Taylor Swift’s “Red” album. Eric focuses on mixing music and film score in stereo and 5.1 surround and producing/co-writing with artists. Recent projects include OneRepublic’s Netflix “Once in a Lifetime” in 5.1 surround, indie band The Lighting, the main title to the Netflix show, “The Haunting of Hill House”, country artist Nora Collins and pop band Castro. Eric works out of his own studio in Los Angeles, Marlay Music. eric-robinson.com
Halloween 666, as it was called in its badass teaser trailer, ended up kind of a mess. Even Paul (Stephen) Rudd couldn't save it. That's what led intrepid renegades to popularize a shadow "Producer's Cut" that long circulated among fans before its proper release on DVD. It's not unlike DMB's mythic "lost" album, The Lillywhite Sessions. We get deep into it, as always. It's Slash Into Me. Artwork by Katie Nee.
Matt Lillywhite is one of the youngest music industry masterminds working hard behind the scenes. He's worked with several countries' governments, met with some of the music industry's most prolific names, and taken an incredibly strategic and unique approach to digital marketing for electronic music.Over the last couple of years, Lillywhite has taken one of the most unique approaches to music marketing: social media influencers. Who would've thought? You know those videos you're mindlessly watching while scrolling through Facebook and Instagram with all of that yummy food you say you're going to make but don't? They (almost) always have music. How does that music get there? Who's writing the music? How do I see that musician live? The gaming videos that you watch--or even make--also have music in them. Each one of those monetizable market types have certain styles and genres of music they prefer. For example, tropical house music does very well with travel videos to warm and luscious locations. On the contrary, gaming videos do well with bass house music.Lillywhite has catalogued these connections at the various gaming, travel, food, you name it, channels and profiles. He's built a reputation with the profile owners where they both can trust each other and work together on each other's success. It's a win-win!In this episode, Lillywhite will dive into his amazing approaches to music marketing, artist management, his views on the music industry, and where the business is headed.Links mentioned in this episode:Top 15 ways to grow your fanbaseAri HerstandAnikdoteHow to make it in the new music business by Ari Herstand3LAUYOOKiE interviewEDX interviewBorgore interviewScooter BraunQuick links:1:38: About Matt Lillywhite4:34: What has been the most pivotal moment in your career? In the late '90s, the Dave Matthews Band was one of the biggest bands in the world. Each of their first three albums went multi-platinum, and their improvisational live shows made them a stadium headliner. And yet this hippie-friendly collective couldn't just put out any album that it pleased. In 1999 and 2000, they gathered at a house outside the band's hometown of Charlottesville, Va. to record songs that were eventually shelved in favor of a much poppier record released in 2001, Everyday. But when those songs, subsequently dubbed The Lillywhite Sessions — after the band's producer, Steve Lillywhite — leaked on Napster, they were adored by DMB's hard-core fans. In this episode, I revisit The Lillywhite Sessions wth one of those fans, indie-rock artist Ryley Walker, for another installment of our Contrarian's Canon series. Unlike other albums discussed in Contrarian's Canon, Ryley and I disagree sharply on The Lillywhite Sessions — he loves the album so much that he covered it in its entirety for an upcoming record due out Nov. 16, whereas I ... can't stand this album or DMB in general. But I am willing to be persuaded! Can Ryley pull off the impossible make me actually like the Dave Matthews Band, the scourge of my late-'90s college years?

Before These Crowded Streets was a game-changer for DMB. The band never made another record like it. In this episode, Lillywhite talks with host Matt Norlander not just about the intricate details of each song, but gets into the working and musicianship dynamic of every member of the band. He opens up about how he got the best out of Boyd Tinsley in the studio, his appreciation for Stefan Lessard’s approach to the bass, and what made LeRoi Moore a beautiful but complicated person. Norlander also wrote a piece for Relix Magazine about the album.
The most celebrated album of Dave Matthews Band's career is 1998's reputation-bending Before These Crowded Streets, a 70-minute magnum opus that features the band at its biggest and best. Steve Lillywhite produced the album, in addition to other DMB records from the 1990s, and joins the podcast for two episodes to discuss so much of what makes this album the band's most respected -- and yet still doesn't get its mainstream due 20 years removed from its release. This episode details Lillywhite's approach to producing DMB and what designs he had on the album well before he even knew what songs the band was bringing to the table. He also gets into why he got sober and how, ironically, this record is what he feels is his most psychedelic despite the fact he was not on drugs or alcohol while producing it.
