Show Notes 0:00: The two hosts of TheOASG Podcast return once again to talk about what they’ve been up to over the past few weeks, which involves Justin talking about the Star Detective Precure and Detective Conan collaboration and Helen talking Shonen Jump catchup, Bookworm Part 3, and Ramparts of Ice! News 23:02: Dark Horse staff recently formed a union (Dark Horse Workers United), and the company has recognized it — the hosts will see how negotiations will go moving forward; Japanese VA Kenjirō Tsuda filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app TikTok for posting videos that allegedly used AI (artificial intelligence) to imitate his voice without permission, and it will be something to monitor moving forward. 29:46: Let’s just say voice actor Kazuki Atsumi might have had a future in the talent industry, but after his contract was terminated by his agency following a report of him being arrested for suspected sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl, the future ain’t looking great for him; meanwhile One-Punch Man artist Yūsuke Murata decided he had to comment on a very wild post about Pakistani Britons, and the comment was so bad that people in many languages criticized him. 34:44: Animator and character designer Kunihiko Hamada shared that he is no longer working at Madhouse — the two hosts discuss Madhouse letting him go after 35 years and how they let him go; Justin and Helen have questions and some concerns on Aki Sora manga creator Masahiro Itosugi saying he has banned by Google while uploading older works to Google Drive. 39:39: A few Japanese magazines will be ending soon or sometime this year; the Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun Finals manga will enter a hiatus following the 100th chapter; Nippon Sangoku will go on hiatus as creator Ikka Matsuki recovers from steroid withdrawal syndrome; and Eiji Hashimoto announced they will temporary switch to a triweekly schedule for Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō after a two-week hiatus due to numerous ailments he’s going through right now. 44:43: Galaxy Express 999 lyricist Jun Hashimoto sadly passed away in a Tokyo hospital at 86 due to liver cirrhosis; Screenwriter Takao Koyama posted on X/Twitter a few weeks ago that scriptwriter Hiroyuki Kawasaki had died on January 23 at 60 years old; and Japanese film director and special effects artist Yoshihiro Nishimura died at 59 — Variety reported that Nishimura had been in the hospital for nearly two weeks fighting a liver disease. Licenses 47:37: Another Taiyo Matsumoto manga has been licensed — but not by VIZ, by Manga Mavericks Books instead!; Aloha Comics announced they’ve licensed Ikuno Tajima’s After Märchen (Ever After in English) as their first ever manga license; K MANGA added a few new titles to its service; and so did Manga UP!; Kogattuo & Ichika Kino's World Wide Web MIKO! has been added to MANGA Plus. 51:21: Not new licenses, but might as well be considering some of these titles have been out of print for a long while! Look out for a couple Jiro Taniguchi titles, Hideo Azuma’s Disappearance Diary, and Kiriko Nananan’s Blue at some point this year; And with Otakon happening next month, Discotek announced a couple titles ahead of it, including the next entry of Digimon for them (Tamers) and the Hana Yori Dango anime. Streaming News 53:00: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights for Adolescence of Utena and will screen the movie in Japanese with English subtitles in US theaters June 21-22, which has Helen in a pickle; JUJUTSU KAISEN Hidden Inventory / Premature Death compilation film and English dubs for Given: Hiiragi mix and Given The Movie: To the Sea, and the Bean Counter OVA are now on Crunchyroll. 55:49: HIDIVE has announced their comings and goings from the service this month, from the Heavy Metal L-Gaim TV anime and OVAs to The Life of Budori Gusuko being added, while Get Backers, Humanity Has Declined, Mayo Chiki!, and Wasteful Days of High School Girl anime are leaving HIDIVE on June 30; premieres of the Cherry and Virgin film and the Sekiro: No Defeat anime will happen at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. 58:34: And yes, Conan Cinema Saturdays has returned this summer…which means Justin will just be vibing and getting these movies views instead of watching most of them properly this year! Weird News 1:00:25: Osaka's holding an exhibition of 17th Century Dutch masterpieces, and it's set to take place at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka between August 21 to September 27. Somehow, Frieren and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is a part of it as a crossover, and Helen had a great story to tell involving earrings and which one it needs to go on for this rabbit, but found out that those without a Bluesky account can’t see it. Guess who found this out mid-podcast? 1:03:43: We will now have Baki’s dad in Tekken 8, meaning these anime/manga characters appearing in fighting games has gone up somehow. 1:05:19: Usually we put a manga getting a US live action in this section because again, these normally don’t work out very well — somehow it’s that and weird because it’s one of most unlikeliest manga to get a US live-action series…it’s based off a Josei manga series! If there’s anything you’d like to share about the latest news or about the episode, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts! The highly anticipated second season of 2023's Frieren anime has arrived, and the gang spent a couple of evenings IRL together watching this season's 10 episodes and has now hopped on the mic to share our thoughts. In many ways, it returns to form, continuing to tell a slower paced and vaguely slice-of-life narrative that loves its flashbacks and references to Himmel the Hero and the original party's memory. But in other ways, this season falters a bit, feeling more like a "filler" season with Season 3's announcement for October 2027, and in some cases becoming almost formulaic in its use of flashback scenes and Frieren's aloof nature. But the phenomenal animation (especially in this season's big arc, the Revolte arc) and wonderful soundtrack both return in full force, and you gotta give this season credit for giving us the "Frieren looking up" meme, especially for Alex. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. This month Alex is continuing his work to get Suits: LA back on the air, so this month Josh & Bill are flying solo. Here's the format of the show:The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including: Netflix's Frieren Season 2 and This is a Gardening Show, Demons of the Shadow Realm on Crunchyroll, and Disney Plus' Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and Maul: Shadow Lord.Newsbreak – This month, they are discussing the news of Netflix adding “clips” feed on vertical video on their mobile app. This feed will feature YouTube Shorts/TikTok-esque clips from current shows and movies as well as past favorites. Disney+ has done something similar called “Verts.” Bill and Josh discuss this and if it'll work … and if they're too old to be the target audience.Streaming Wars – Bill, & Josh each selected their top streamer of the month. Josh honorably mentions HBO MAX due to the buzz around Euphoria Season 3, The Pitt and its finale, but ultimately picks AppleTV. This is due to the new series Widows Bay which has received high reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. There's also Shrinking Season 3, the return of F1 Racing, For All Mankind and Ted Lasso, the success of Margo's Got Money Troubles, and the new season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Meanwhile Bill gives it to Disney+/Hulu/ESPN due to May being a huge month for Star Wars, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and Zootopia 2 as well its sports presentation of the NFL Draft, the NBA Playoffs, Savanna Bananas, and their first broadcast Wrestlemania.New Series Spotlight – This month Bill and Josh return to TV Break's most watched streamer (that could be a lie) AppleTV for Widows Bay. The series was created, written and produced by Katie Dippold who wrote Ghostbusters (2016), The Heat, Spy, and Haunted Mansion … and is a fellow Rutgers University Journalism alumnus like Bill. The series stars Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) as the beleaguered mayor of a small New England island. He's trying desperately to drum up summer tourism business via a NY Times article, but a mysterious fog and an apparent curse may derail his plans.

Comcast's Q1 earnings call delivered good news almost across the board, and Philip and Scott break down what it means for the theme parks division. Universal's theme park revenue was up 24%, driven mostly by Epic Universe doing exactly what it was supposed to do: increasing per-cap spending and length of stay across the entire Orlando resort. The one cloud on the horizon is Asia. Universal called out softening attendance in Osaka and Beijing, with China-related inbound travel pressure hitting Japan and a tougher macro environment in China. We dig into Universal Cool Japan, the 10-year-old programming slate that lets USJ rapidly overlay popular IPs like the upcoming Frieren walkthrough, and why leaning local is the right answer when international demand shrinks. Then we compare that nimble seasonal model to Universal Hollywood's FanFest Nights, the hard-ticket spring version of HHN that's leaning heavily on existing daytime IPs in year two, with One Piece and Sailor Moon doing the real work of pulling in new fans.We close on the bigger corporate picture. Theme parks are still only 7% of Comcast, and with broadband losses improving for the first time since 2020 and Peacock approaching profitability, the parks division is being treated as one of six growth drivers funding its own reinvestment rather than getting a blank check. Plus, the Iran conflict and oil prices haven't yet shown up in domestic park demand, but Comcast left the door open for that to change in Q2 and Q3.Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

From knights to goblins, today we explore what propelled the fantasy genre from its late-80s boom into modern anime like Frieren. We dive into how fantasy anime has evolved — from epic quests and high fantasy worlds to more mature, reflective storytelling. With so many high-quality fantasy series arriving in recent years, we ask the big question: are we living through a second renaissance of fantasy anime?

Short month, long episode! First, Ben Lindbergh and Charles Holmes extoll the virtues of one of their favorite fantasy stories, the anime series ‘Frieren: Beyond Journey's End,' touching on its themes, influences, and characters, as well as why it makes a great gateway show for non-anime fans. They also discuss some other highlights of a peak period for anime (including ‘Journal With Witch' and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen'), preview a few coming attractions, and take a detour with discussion of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu.' After that, other Ringer-Verse hosts, friends, and listeners salute unsung releases to top off another monthly roundup of fandom favorites from TV, anime, movies, video games, books, comics, and beyond that were released recently, but not yet covered in depth on a full-length episode.
