*Moonrise*... what happened? This should have been a sci-fi masterpiece. I mean, *WIT Studio*, *Hiromu Arakawa*, *Tow Ubukata*—those names alone promised something groundbreaking! And visually, no complaints there. The animation? Stunning. The space battles? Thrilling. The engrave technology? Fascinating. The world-building? Full of potential. It looked and felt like a triumph in the making. But then the story happened. Or, rather, it unraveled. What started off so strong—an intriguing conflict between Earth and its oppressed Moon colony, governed by an AI overlord—just... lost its way. The pacing is baffling. One moment, you're deep in gripping action, and the next, you're stuck in a subplot that drags momentum to a halt. And the time jumps—why are they so messy? Instead of enriching the story, they confuse it. Jack, Phil, and the rest? They had so much potential, but instead, they feel underdeveloped, inconsistent, and sometimes just frustratingly vague. And the dialogue—oh, the dialogue. It's not even bad in a fun way. It's flat, sometimes forced, and the infamous "Moonrise!" line? Unintentionally hilarious. The tonal shifts don't help either. One moment, it's a serious war drama with genuine stakes, and the next? Slapstick humor. Did they forget what kind of story they were telling? Then there's the ending... or whatever that was supposed to be. Rushed, incomplete, full of unanswered questions—just completely unsatisfying. So, is it worth watching? If you care about deep storytelling, well-developed characters, and coherent pacing, probably not. But if you're here purely for gorgeous animation and space battles, you might still enjoy parts of it. But ultimately, Moonrise is frustrating because it could have been *great*. And instead, it's just... confusing, disappointing, and a missed opportunity.

From the ill-fated Studio Flag with character design from Fullmetal Alchemists's Hiromu Arakawa, the wuxia inspired action series Hero Tales follows a group of warriors brought into conflict due to a celestial prophecy, with each warrior being an incarnation of one of the stars in the Big Dipper. BJ and Duffo discuss a Chinese empire falling apart due to poverty and corruption, a legendary archer who starts hanging around because he really wants to hook up with your sister, and a necromancer who loves stealing and redistributing holy swords to whichever side he feels like that day.   Our theme song is Endless 808 by I.K.

It's the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, two brothers with a gift for alchemy, on a quest to find the philosophers stone to right the wrongs of their youth and restore their bodies after a failed attempt to bring their mother back to life using their gift.Join us as we about why this manga is still remembered so fondly almost 20 years after release, why it was big in the UK and how it balances humour and tragedy like nothing else on the shelves of your local comic book store! Thanks to Juliano Zucareli for our theme music!Find us on:X: Manga Tak PodBluesky: Manga Tak PodInstagram: Manga Tak Pod

For fans of manga, Hiromu Arakawa needs no introduction. She's responsible for the mega-ultra-successful and popular Full Metal Alchemist, as well as the acclaimed Silver Spoon, among other works. Now, here comes Arakawa Sensei's latest series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, to delight and bewilder us in equal measure. The first volume is a bit of a jumble. We've got gunfights, fish-out-of-water hijinks, and possibly a Japanese folklore-based take on Pokemon? It doesn't quite all hang together, but it's clearly the work of a master chef combining tastefully luxurious elements together in a creative way, so we'll just have to trust her that it'll come together someday. Remember, even FMA fans will tell you that it took a few volumes to really find its footing...Get in touch with us!Email: mangaroospodcast@gmail.comEverywhere else: @mangaroos

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Japanese: 鋼の錬金術師 FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST, Hepburn: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi) is a Japanese anime television series adapted from the original Fullmetal Alchemist manga series by Hiromu Arakawa. Produced by Bones, the series is directed by Yasuhiro Irie, written by Hiroshi Ōnogi and composed by Akira Senju. The series was conceived in order to create a faithful adaptation that directly follows the entire storyline of the original manga, after 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist anime series strayed away from it to tell its own story after running out of published manga material to adapt. Production for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood began in 2008. The series was broadcast for sixty-four episodes on MBS–TBS from April 2009 to July 2010. The series was first licensed in North America by Funimation and was broadcast English-dubbed on Adult Swim from February 2010 to September 2011. In 2016, Funimation lost the rights to the series and it was transferred to Aniplex of America. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood earned acclaim from critics and audiences, and is considered to be one of the best anime series of all time. Reviewers noted its faithfulness to the manga and its introduction of characters and plot details that were not present in the 2003 anime; the climactic episodes were also lauded for both its action scenes and moral messages.

Count on Hiromu Arakawa in FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST to make all her characters complex. As we see again in chapter 73, even henchmen have depth! This chapter also reminds us how well plotted the story is, as our heroes face a complex situation with a lot of moving parts, and they deal with complications in ways that seem like exactly what needed to happen to move the story forward.

The Law of Equivalent Exchange: A Fullmetal Alchemist manga podcast

The story of the Ishbal (Ishval?) war continues, without a single joke - so we make a few of our own! Still, chapter 60 of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST continues to be a sobering look at a war even more senseless than most - and Hiromu Arakawa has some harsh words for religion in this one, too.

In our 1st-season finale, we conclude our series of Fullmetal Alchemist reviews by rounding up the remaining theatrical feature films. First, there's 2011's The Sacred Star of Milos, an animated spin-off of Brotherhood made by the same crew, but with entirely different creative leadership, leading to a radically different aesthetic and the best animation Fullmetal Alchemist has ever seen. It's a bit narratively messy in integrating Hiromu Arakawa's characters into an otherwise original and unrelated story, but it's also an entertaining and memorably weird experience that's an essential watch. The live-action Fullmetal Alchemist trilogy is entertaining in its own way, but far less essential. With three films – 2017's Fullmetal Alchemist and this year's The Revenge of Scar and The Final Alchemy, all streaming worldwide on Netflix – this series, directed by Fumihiko Sori and starring Ryosuke Yamada as Ed, is a surprisingly faithful recreation of the manga (maybe too much so at times). Bouncing between hilarious B-movie oddity, boring recitation of the original story, and a few genuinely affecting performances and scenes, these movies are uneven but extremely interesting, and more than worth taking the time to discuss here. Enjoy, and come back next year for Season 2 of Japanimation Station, where we will be reviewing Ufotable's Type-Moon adaptations, including their Garden of Sinners and Fate/stay Night series! The month of Manga continues with a lively discussion of Fullmetal Alchemist chapters 1 & 2, written and drawn by Hiromu Arakawa. Arakawa creates a beautiful, steampunk setting to create a world where alchemy is a widely practiced science. This particular Manga may feel a little more familiar to American audiences, due in part to the successful anime series that were based on the books. Fullmetal Alchemist explores concepts well-known by Western cultures, such as the Catholic Religion, and follows a structure more similar to that of mainstream American comics, which allows this series to be an easy starting point for those looking to get into Manga. Will the Elrich Brothers get the philosopher's stone? Or are they doomed to live with their mistakes? Listen in and find out!

Our journey through Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood comes to an end with the second half of the second anime, now in fully uncharted territory as it adapts the final stretch of Hiromu Arakawa's original manga. Diving deep into the Briggs and Promised Day story arcs that conclude the series, we discuss all the many ups and occasional downs of this last run. The manga is probably at its most uneven during this portion, but Brotherhood fully comes into its own as an anime, its pacing finally relaxed enough to fully tell the story, its ludicrously stacked voice cast fully in place, and its animation and aesthetics frequently on point as it approaches the end. As we go through the good, the bad, and everything in between, we find no shortage of topics worth discussing, and Brotherhood proves extremely rewarding to talk about all the way up to its all-time great ending. Our Fullmetal Alchemist series enters its ultimate phase as we review Brotherhood, the 2009 anime that starts fresh to adapt Hiromu Arakawa's original manga in full. With a new crew, a new animation style, many new cast members, and a largely new story, Brotherhood is extremely different than the 2003 anime – and in many ways, it's also a different beast than the manga, especially in this first half. While the show has come to be canonized as one of the very best anime ever made by Western fans, initial reception was more mixed, and this first half certainly shows some growing pains, with some poor structural and adaptational decisions and inconsistent animations. But it also has one of the best voice casts ever assembled, with A-list Seiyuu from top to bottom, and while it fumbles in some moments, it soars quite high indeed in others, and even in this first half delivers several iconic episodes that have already proven to stand the test of time. It's a lot to talk about, and with a whole half of the series left to go, we're only just scratching the surface. All links can be found at JapanimationStation.Com or by searching in your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening! For our first anime subject, we're diving into the world of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist, starting with the 2003 anime that partially adapted the then-young manga before branching off into an increasingly divergent anime-original story. While it was a huge and acclaimed hit, in Japan and abroad, at the time of release, the show has a more controversial reputation now, years after Arakawa's manga was completed and faithfully re-adapted as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Sean and Jonathan are coming at the 2003 series from wildly different directions – Jonathan a lifelong fan who started with this anime as a kid, and Sean only recently having read the manga without ever seeing either anime – so our perspectives inherently diverge. But if there's one thing we clearly agree on, it's that this is a fascinating show very much worth talking about. Whether one loves it or hates it, it's clearly more than an outdated curio, and we think you, like us, will come away from this conversation with a greater appreciation for all versions of Fullmetal Alchemist. After being cornered by Izumi Curtis on the issue of their current armor-and-automail look, Ed and Al start to tell their story with this issue, finally revealing their "origin story" to the reader nearly two years after the original run of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga began. Why might Hiromu Arakawa have decided to hold back this information, rather than begin the story with it? Tim and Patrick discuss several good reasons for doing so in discussing chapter 21!
