Helen McCarthy has spent over forty years as one of the West's leading voices on manga and anime — and her new book The Manga Bible is her most ambitious attempt yet to bring that tradition to readers who've never cracked a volume. She joins Matthew to talk about what manga actually is, where it came from, and why it keeps mattering to generation after generation of readers.Matthew and Helen trace the full arc: Helen's origin story (a robot cartoon marathon on Spanish TV in 1981, a partner who'd just had his art-school brain exploded in Mallorca), the London import shops and rented VHS tapes from Japan that built an early UK fandom from scratch, and the wartime suppression that nearly wiped out the medium before Tezuka and others rebuilt it from memory. The conversation covers what manga gave women readers that American and British comics couldn't, why so many Western assumptions about manga history turned out to be wrong, and how Godzilla's origins as post-occupation allegory connects to manga's own post-war reinvention. The episode closes somewhere unexpected — protest songs, One Piece flags at South American demonstrations, and a shared conviction that pop culture's deepest superpower is its ability to carry a rebellion across every language barrier at once.More About Helen and Her BookThe Manga Bible by Helen McCarthy — available from helenmccarthy.net and independent bookstores via bookshop.orgA Brief History of Manga by Helen McCarthyConnect with Helen: helenmccarthy.netDiscussed on Other Superhero Ethics EpisodesGodzilla (1954)One Piece**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Our Tomino-thon kicks off with a history-focused episode exploring the origins of Tomino Yoshiyuki leading up to the creation of his first full original series, Zambot 3 (which we'll be reviewing next week). Where did this mad creative genius come from, and what was he up to in the years before he earned his ‘Kill ‘em all' moniker? This episode takes us from the political climate in Japan during Tomino's college years, to Tomino's time at Mushi Pro becoming one of the most prolific episode directors on Tezuka Osamu's Mighty Atom (aka Astro Boy), to his first directorial project, a (very loose) adaptation of Tezuka's Triton of the Sea manga. We explore how he became known as the anime industry's ‘wandering storyboard man' in the 1970s, and end with the creation of the studio that became Sunrise, Tomino's creative home for the bulk of his career. It's a very fun, extremely informative episode that lays the foundation for the season to come.  Enjoy, and come back next week as we review Invincible Super Man Zambot 3, the show which first earned Tomino his ‘kill ‘em all' moniker!  Time Chart: Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:37 Intro and Tomino Origins Part 1: 0:01:37 – 0:16:30 Mighty Atom/Astro Boy: 0:16:30 – 0:59:04 Tomino Origins Part 2: 0:59:04 – 1:09:25 Eyecatch Break: 1:09:25 – 1:10:37 Triton of the Sea: 1:10:37 – 1:48:23 Wrap-up: 1:48:23 – 1:54:54 End Theme: 1:54:54 – 1:57:03 Subscribe to our YouTube channels!  Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation   Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcast Read Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.com Subscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.com Follow Japanimation Station on Instagram and Threads @JapanimationStationPodhttps://www.instagram.com/japanimationstationpod/ Read Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK “Tominoson-G Mk. DEFENDANT: The Hero of Time EVIDENCE: Siren Song Merlot/Syrah blend SCENE OF THE CRIME: Hyrule -- Hey friend — pop a cork and get comfy. In this episode of True Crime Against Wine we pivoted (blame the internet and a mis-shipped bottle) and ended up sipping a lush Merlot-Syrah blend from Siren Song while getting delightfully nerdy about The Legend of Zelda. Expect giggles, throwback gaming stories, and super honest wine notes — think plush blackberries, juicy plum, and a grown-up juice-box vibe that's dangerously drinkable. We dive into Zelda's origins (shoutout to Miyamoto and Tezuka), reminisce about Ocarina of Time demos at the mall, and debate favorite entries like Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild. There's talk about iconic villains (Ganon, of course), the weirdly existential Link's Awakening plot, cult-fave enemies (stalfos!), and why Link's silent-hero design is pure genius for player immersion. Also: a brief side-eye at 900-number culture, a few messy sibling stories, and absolutely too many sips of wine. If you're into cozy chats about wine, gaming lore, and dumb personal anecdotes, this one's for you. Cheers — it's dangerous to go alone, so bring a friend (and maybe another bottle).

Read transcriptWelcome, mechanical marvels and atomic adventurers! This week on Play Comics, we're firing up our reactor cores and diving headfirst into the absolutely electrifying world of Astro Boy Omega Factor for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone at Banpresto looked at Osamu Tezuka's groundbreaking manga and thought, “You know what this 1950s icon needs? A portable fighting game experience where he punches evil robots directly in their non-existent feelings.” Released in 2003, this 2D brawler took the mighty atom himself and somehow convinced an entire development team that what fans REALLY wanted was the chance to mash buttons while watching our favorite nuclear-powered pint-sized hero exchange haymakers with increasingly ridiculous mechanical adversaries. Sure, the original manga was about philosophical questions of robot rights and what it means to be human, but why dwell on existential dread when you could just… punch things? Joining us for this high-voltage episode is Hamish Steele from Super Mario Moment – a man who knows a thing or two about platform and fighting game mechanics, though probably with significantly fewer isotope-based superpowers than Astro Boy packs. Together, we'll explore whether this GBA adaptation captured the essence of Tezuka's revolutionary creation or if it just left us feeling like we'd been on the receiving end of one of Astro Boy's arm cannons. So charge up your atomic energy reserves, practice your most devastating uppercut, and prepare for an episode that's absolutely radiating with gaming chaos. Will this manga adaptation prove to be a shining beacon of handheld excellence, or will it fizzle out faster than Astro's battery in a poorly designed dungeon? Time to find out if this portable pugilist belongs in the Hall of Mighty Adaptations or the scrapheap of forgotten GBA obscurities! Learn such things as: Should we be concerned that a 50,000 horsepower robot is solving all his problems with his fists instead of, you know, actual diplomacy? How many obscure Astro Boy villains can one GBA cartridge possibly hold before it achieves sentience? How many different episodes will at least partially focus on a character's butt? And so much more! You can Hamish on BlueSky @HamishSteele, his website HamishSteele.co.UK, and his podcast Super Mario Moment. Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. This month, I'm revisiting one of Tezuka's TV films in a brand new way: New anime publisher SkySet Entertainment has released the 80s sci-fi fantasy film A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose on bluray in America--and they created a full English dub for it! So what better time to both revisit this somewhat obscure classic to see if I still enjoy it, AND to see how the new English dub sounds. How does anime Spock sound in English? Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Japanese manga, American comics, anime and western cartoons all owe an unpayable debt to Osamu Tezuka and his greatest creation Astro Boy. Astro (or Atom's) adventures were brisk and often silly, but they would subtly comment on more adult topics like discrimination, war, and moral ambiguity. Naoki Urasawa is mangaka who was heavily inspired by Tezuka's work, and in 2003 he released Pluto, an eight-volume mini-series that that took a deeper, darker look at the world of Astro Boy. When both humans and robots are being murdered by a shadowy killer, robot cop Gesicht will need to assemble the pieces of the mystery, as the potential victims try to reassemble their war-torn and shattered lives. In this episode, we discuss how both Tezuka's and Urasawa's styles reflect their respective eras, compare modern western comics and gekiga, lying as a signifier of sentience, the manga's restaging of the 2003 Iraq war and its depiction of PTSD and survivor's guilt. the families built by both humans and robots in the story, the subtle apartheid present in Astro's world, robots as people as commodities, Asimov's laws as guidleines and not rules, and becoming just "human" enough to kill. We also talk about fresh Shrimp Jesus, larcenous typography, Will Prompt Engineer For Food, being lodged in the canon, hitting on the robot nose, no Aibo left behind, The Killing of a Rest Stop Robot, dating your Roomba, machine gun butts, and the REAL reason Pluto has horns!Hurt robots hurt robots. The new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Read the saga of the "Download a Car" font!https://www.404media.co/tag/xband/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. Our Grand Tour now takes us back to the first decade of anime, and to the work of the ‘God of Manga' himself, the one and only Tezuka Osamu! The creator of series like Mighty Atom, Black Jack, and Princess Knight, Tezuka's Mushi Productions pioneered TV anime as we know it today, and Dororo is one of the towering achievements of their 1960s output. Based on the unfinished manga by Tezuka, and directed by the great Sugii Gizaburō, Dororo is a singular samurai drama about a wandering swordsman, Hyakkimaru, who battles demons to restore the 48 missing parts of his body sacrificed by his warlord father. Along the way, he meets a young thief named Dororo, and their many adventures make for some of the earliest manga and anime to directly engage with adult themes and imagery. Like the manga, Dororo on TV had some production shake-ups, essentially changing directions halfway through when Sugii departed the series amidst disagreements with Tezuka, but make no mistake: this is one anime you do not want to miss. Enjoy, and come back next week as we leap 50 years ahead to 2019 to talk about MAPPA's recent re-interpretation of Dororo! Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro to Tezuka Osamu: 0:01:15 – 0:55:24Eyecatch Break: 0:55:24 – 0:56:09Dororo History & Review: 0:56:09 – 3:32:24End Theme: 3:32:24 – 3:33:54Subscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastRead Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK“Welcome to Japanimation Station” – Music by Thomas Lack, Lyrics by Sean Chapman, featuring Hatsune Miku. “ice” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku & Megurine Luka. https://www.thomaslack.com

For this episode, number 106, the first of July 2024 you'll be hearing part two of our chat…On entering the gaming industry Nilo's focus was always about inspiring and guiding production teams to craft original and iconic characters and worlds. He's real advocate for originality and imagination in design, rather than leaning on copying existing designs or using AI to assist those designs. In our conversation, Nilo shares his experiences working with the legendary John Hughes, emphasizing the value of building relationships and understanding a director's vision. We also delve into the crucial role of production design in film and the unspoken code of acceptance when a director gives their nod of approval to a set.Nilo believes that good design should shake the viewer to their core, creating a unique experience. This means a lot of iterating and refining, but through this rigorous process, truly groundbreaking concepts can emerge. Collaboration is another cornerstone of Nilo's philosophy. He believes that the creative process thrives on the participation of diverse talents, each contributing their unique expertise to the project. This collaborative spirit is what drives innovation. Now you'll know if you listened to my chat with Nilo in 2021 and last episode that he's met a lot of key figures in the industry, in this chat he talks about n meeting influential figures like Hayao Miyazaki and Tezuka Osamu. These encounters have not only inspired him but also provided valuable insights into his design and storytelling work. But it's not all work for Nilo—his passions outside of work, like Formula One racing, bring joy and fresh perspectives into his life. There's a great bit at the end of this chat when I tell Nilo I work in F1, and he becomes the fan for a moment. So, buckle up and get ready to dive into the creative mind of Nilo Rodis-Jamero. This episode is packed with insights, inspiration, and a whole lot of passion for the art of design. Donate ButtonAll the linksPeter Kuran's "The Thing" Kickstarter
