Very special guest Kiyo Tezuka joins us all the way from Hikone, Japan to share an epic tale of wayward youth spent as a globe wandering hippie looking for truth before accidentally settling down to the responsible(?) life of a temple monk. What do we become when we're all grown up and still don't know what we want to be when we grow up? Does Western Zen have something unique to teach Japanese Zen in return? Is parallel parking one of those secret magical powers Buddha hinted we might one day attain?? Find out here!
Our Grand Tour now takes us back to the first decade of anime, and to the work of the ‘God of Manga' himself, the one and only Tezuka Osamu! The creator of series like Mighty Atom, Black Jack, and Princess Knight, Tezuka's Mushi Productions pioneered TV anime as we know it today, and Dororo is one of the towering achievements of their 1960s output. Based on the unfinished manga by Tezuka, and directed by the great Sugii Gizaburō, Dororo is a singular samurai drama about a wandering swordsman, Hyakkimaru, who battles demons to restore the 48 missing parts of his body sacrificed by his warlord father. Along the way, he meets a young thief named Dororo, and their many adventures make for some of the earliest manga and anime to directly engage with adult themes and imagery. Like the manga, Dororo on TV had some production shake-ups, essentially changing directions halfway through when Sugii departed the series amidst disagreements with Tezuka, but make no mistake: this is one anime you do not want to miss. Enjoy, and come back next week as we leap 50 years ahead to 2019 to talk about MAPPA's recent re-interpretation of Dororo! Jace welcome writer Samuel Sattin to the show to talk about his reimagining of the classic Osamu Tezuka mange Unico. A daunting task for any writer, we talk with Samuel about the challenge of ensuring his story honors the original story of the "Godfather of Manga". The guys also chat about the universal themes of the story and the brilliance of Tezuka's original vision for the story. There are lots of influences in both the original and the soon to be released Unico: Awakenings, but Disney is clearly one of them, so be sure to listen to this awesome conversation that includes Samuel's plans for San Diego Comic Con 2024.
Last episode you heard part one of my conversation with Nilo Rodis Jamero, design legend and wonderful person. For this episode, number 106, the first of July 2024 you'll be hearing part two of our chat…On entering the gaming industry Nilo's focus was always about inspiring and guiding production teams to craft original and iconic characters and worlds. He's real advocate for originality and imagination in design, rather than leaning on copying existing designs or using AI to assist those designs. In our conversation, Nilo shares his experiences working with the legendary John Hughes, emphasizing the value of building relationships and understanding a director's vision. We also delve into the crucial role of production design in film and the unspoken code of acceptance when a director gives their nod of approval to a set.Nilo believes that good design should shake the viewer to their core, creating a unique experience. This means a lot of iterating and refining, but through this rigorous process, truly groundbreaking concepts can emerge. Collaboration is another cornerstone of Nilo's philosophy. He believes that the creative process thrives on the participation of diverse talents, each contributing their unique expertise to the project. This collaborative spirit is what drives innovation. Now you'll know if you listened to my chat with Nilo in 2021 and last episode that he's met a lot of key figures in the industry, in this chat he talks about n meeting influential figures like Hayao Miyazaki and Tezuka Osamu. These encounters have not only inspired him but also provided valuable insights into his design and storytelling work. But it's not all work for Nilo—his passions outside of work, like Formula One racing, bring joy and fresh perspectives into his life. There's a great bit at the end of this chat when I tell Nilo I work in F1, and he becomes the fan for a moment. So, buckle up and get ready to dive into the creative mind of Nilo Rodis-Jamero. This episode is packed with insights, inspiration, and a whole lot of passion for the art of design. Donate ButtonAll the linksPeter Kuran's "The Thing" Kickstarter

Episode 129 of Key Frames, a podcast about anime. The works of Osamu Tezuka are often concerned with the human spirit in conditions of extremity, with what remains of a person when malevolent forces or just the vagaries of circumstance have stripped everything else away. Phoenix: Eden17 and Pluto, the anime discussed by Ben, Andy, Duncan, and Jeff in this episode of the podcast, even go so far as to feature synthetic and alien life forms among their casts, as a means of further interrogating the good and bad of what makes each of us human. Anyway, apropos of nothing at all regarding extremity, try to guess which of the hosts was coming doing with a bruiser of a migraine in the short span of recording! The post 129 - Tezuka-Pilled first appeared on Key Frames.

Lukujonossa keskustelemme Go Nagain ronskinraisusta klassikkosarjasta Devilman, joka 1970-luvulla rikkoi mangan rajoja. --- Kommentoi | Mastodon | Twitter (X?) | Instagram --- (01:00) – KUULUMISET: ÄÄNIJÄLKI - Afureko-blogi ja sen Äänijälki-podcast - Afureko Twitterissä - Nita Twitterissä - Mangakartan ja Äänijäljen ystävänpäivätempaus 2022 - Jakso 63, jossa puhuimme ystävänpäivätempauksesta alkukuulumisissa (03:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: ENNEN TEZUKAA - Jean-Marie Bouissoun tietokirja Manga: Histoire et univers de la bande dessinée japonaise - Ukiyo-e-puupiirrosteokset - Hokusai (13:04) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1940-LUKU - Petterin DesuTalks-luento Mies joka loi Osamu Tezukan (YouTube – videotallenne jäi traagisesti isoksi osaksi ilman ääntä, joka alkaa kuulua vasta noin tästä eteenpäin, jos volyymin säätää maksimiin) - Shin Takarajima (1947), Osamu Tezukan läpimurtoteos, joka on sittemmin nostettu modernin mangan alkupisteeksi ja peruskiveksi - Shin Takarajima olikin esillä myös British Museumin manganäyttelyssä vuonna 2019 - Tähän aikaan sarjakuvaa julkaistiin Japanissa lähinnä halpoina (kuva) ja tekijänoikeuksista välittämättöminä (kuva) akahon-julkaisuina, joiden seassa Tezuka erottui edukseen laadullaan - Fujiko Fujio -työpari muistelee jälkikäteen, miten päräyttävältä Shin Takarajiman näkeminen tuntui (kuva) - Floyd Gottfredsson ja hänen piirrostyylinsä, joka on tuttu kaikille vanhoja Aku Ankan taskukirjoja lukeneille - Squash & stretch on animaatioperiaatteista tärkeimpänä pidetty - Comics Journalin artikkelit: - Manga Finds Pirate Gold: The Case of New Treasure Island - Tezuka Osamu Outwits the Phantom Blot: The Case of New Treasure Island Cont'd - Sazae-san (1946–1974) (19:47) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1950-LUKU - Osamu Tezukan nousukausi - Viidakon valtias (1950), maailmalla tutumpi jenkkinimellään - Petterin kirjoitus Viidakon valtiaasta Anime-lehden numerossa 3/2013 (pdf) - Astro Boy (1952) - Princess Knight (1953) - Tokiwa-so, jossa Tezuka asui 1953-1954 ja josta muodostui Tokion mangapiirtäjien keskus - Shotaro Ishinomori - Fujiko Fujio - Weekly Manga Times (1956) – kustantajansa mukaan ensimmäinen pelkkää mangaa julkaissut lehti (22:56) – MANGAN VUOSIKYMMENET: 1960-LUKU - Viikottaiset mangalehdet rytmittävät nuorten elämää: - Weekly Shonen Magazine (1959) - Weekly Shonen Sunday (1959) - Weekly Shonen Jump (1968) - Weekly Shonen Champion (1969) - Akahon-puolella synkempää ja rankempaa sarjakuvaa alettiin vuodesta 1957 alkaen kutsua gekigaksi (“dramaattiset kuvat”) vastareaktiona lehdissä julkaistavan ja lapsille soveltuvan mangan (“sutaistut kuvat“) suosiolle). On this episode, join hosts Ed, Garrett, Karen, Kate, and Dennis as we discuss the 1970 film Cleopatra, by Mushi Productions. Part of the adult targeted "Animerama" trilogy, this is not your Tezuka's Astro Boy or Kimba the White Lion. This film plays it loose with history while also showcasing fine art from various cultures, at times both childish and adult, and filled with lots of heartache and loss. Come listen and see how we try to make sense of this film. Hoist your wine glasses towards the infinite sea of stars! On this episode, we are reviewing the 1982 space opera based on the iconic manga from Leiji Matsumoto, Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth. The primary reason we're reviewing this is because back on February 13th, 2023, Leiji Matsumoto passed away at age 85. His manga are some of the most enduring and influential works of the medium, placing him up there with Tezuka and other greats. Sully had the chance to interview some scholars of his works back in 2021 (you can find those here) but we've never properly reviewed any of his works until now! We hope you enjoy our review and thanks to all the fine folks in our Discord who submitted their top 3 Matsumoto works lists! 00:00:00 Introduction, remembering Leiji Matsumoto, and reflecting on our personal histories with his work 00:30:16 Cast, Crew, & Production history 00:57:01 Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth Review 01:44:57 Talking about the dub & our overall thoughts on the film 02:06:52 Outro Do you agree or disagree with our takes on Arcadia of My Youth? Sit down and Zen out while we discuss one of Tezuka's magnum opera: Buddha.
A very big welcome to Season 3 of The TeachPitch Podcast. I am hyper excited to be opening our latest season and cannot wait to hear your thoughts on all the awesome things we have in store for you for this series of episodes. We are kicking off and we are kicking off big because I have the great, great fortune to open Season 3 with some of the very best architects in this world. For our 51st Episode we are taking you to Tokyo, Japan where we had the tremendous honour to speak to the great Yui & Takaharu Tezuka. Now I am genuinely not lying to you when I tell you that this couple has shaken the world of architecture and that because of them and their magnificent designs this world is a more beautiful place. Tezuka Architects has won the Japanese Institute of Architects Prize (twice over), The Yoshioka Prize, The Architectural Institution of Japan Prize and the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2017. If you haven't already seen it, please, please check out the TED talk of Takaharu Tezuka about ‘The Best Kindergarten You Have Ever Seen' - 1.3 million people have watched his talk before you and for very good reasons. I loved Yui and Takaharu because of their simplicity. I am very much inspired and in awe about their choice to find their architectural ideas in nature or as they say themselves - merely amplifying what is already there instead of trying to rework or undo what nature has given to us. I also love the fact that they always wear the same colour of tshirts in the family - blue for Takaharu, red for Tezuka and I believe green and yellow for their son and daughter. Anyways, I learnt loads of loads of this interview and hope you will as well. We have also included the video recording of this interview on our YouTube channel so do check that out as well, if you want to get an idea of what these wonderful people look like. With that, please enjoy - ‘Yui and Takaharu Tezuka' - The Architects! You can find more information about Yui and Takaharu through the website of Tezuka Architects: http://www.tezuka-arch.com
Well this one passes the OST rating with flying colors compared to the previous one's we've listened to! Wow. Yoshihiro Ike is a musical lord because damn...he got right to the point with these tracks and had us entranced. He isn't a God compared to original creator, Osamu Tezuka, though. I think we spent just as much time talking about Tezuka and Queen Bee (Ziyoou-vachi) as we did the OST this time. There's just so much information and cool shit happening in this episode ya'll!This remake of the 1969 anime is jam packed with action, emotional damage (queue meme), and beautiful music. This is something Garrett and Emily can most certainly agree on. Please check this shit out...ESPECIALLY if you haven't seen it yet! Go watch it on Amazon Video and THEN come back to listen to our musical breakdown. Have you ever watched The Lion King? Well, you might be surprised to learn that some people think the movie got its inspiration from Japan—and more specifically, from cartoonist Tezuka Osamu. Join host Cameron Peloso for this incredible story about the “god of Manga.” As a child, Tezuka loved to draw. He would hunt insects and draw them. As Japan entered World War II, Tezuka continued to draw and develop a new style of cartoons that would be called “Manga.” It's an important story of perseverance and doing what you love, even when it seems impossible. Today, Tezuka is one of the most famous Japanese cartoonists to ever live. Now, we'll learn more about his story.
